Video: Lindsey Graham versus Hagel over his “Israeli lobby” comments

posted at 3:11 pm on January 31, 2013 by Allahpundit

You’ve already seen a bunch of video of Hagel today. Get ready to see a bunch more. As I’m writing this, I’m hearing on Twitter that Ted Cruz is destroying him over America supposedly being the “world’s bully.” This isn’t a confirmation hearing, it’s target practice.

The beauty of this clip isn’t just the spectacle of Graham making Hagel eat his own shinola. It’s the fact that 90 percent of the reason the left has gone along with this nomination is to see Hagel push back on questions exactly like this one. He was the guy who was going to speak truth to power by standing up to the neocon warmongers and their “Zionist” puppet-masters — and here he is, rolling over. You could almost hear liberals screaming at their TV sets when Graham asked him to name a dumb move taken by the U.S. at the behest of the Israel lobby, “Say ‘Iraq’, Chuck! Say ‘Iraq!’” But Hagel can’t make that move. The Democrats will happily confirm a lightweight who’s unprepared for this hearing and unqualified to lead the Pentagon because he’s useful as a Republican fig leaf for Obama’s upcoming defense cuts. They won’t confirm a guy whose unapologetic conspiratorial mumbling about Israel’s hidden hand or whatever might alienate Jewish voters, and Hagel knows it. So he’s lying here, and not just about this either, purely in the interest of getting confirmed. Here’s what it looks like when Glenn Greenwald’s heart breaks:

And lest you doubt Hagel’s lying:

If you don’t know who Rosenberg is and why that’s significant, go read Twitchy.

Update: I doubt he’s lost any Democrats from this morning’s showing but Thad Cochran may well be the only Republican vote.

Of course, if Hagel is unwilling to name anyone or anything, including Iraq, it may also suggest that Hagel’s complaint about the “Jewish lobby” has little to do with policy and that Hagel is a paranoid McCarthyite of the type the Left would never accept as a nominee from a GOP Prez.

Cruz Cross-Examines Hagel on ‘World’s Bully’ Interview

BY: Washington Free Beacon Staff
January 31, 2013 2:38 pm

Sen. Ted Cruz (R., Tex.) lambasted Defense Secretary nominee Chuck Hagel over his 2009 interview with Al Jazeera where he agreed with a description of the United States as the “world’s bully.”

Cruz played a clip of the interview at Hagel’s confirmation hearing Thursday, leading to this exchange:

TED CRUZ: Senator Hagel, do you think it’s appropriate for the chief civilian leader of U.S. military forces to agree with the statement that both the perception and the reality is that the United States is “the world’s bully?”

CHUCK HAGEL: I didn’t hear her say that, by the way, the United States. And I think my comment was it’s a relevant and good observation. I don’t think that I said I agree with it.

CRUZ: With respect, I think the record speaks for itself. It was in writing that she said the U.S. is the world’s bully, that is the reality. And you said, “Her observation is a good one, it’s relevant, uh, yes to her question.” You explicitly agreed with the characterization of the United States as the world’s bully, and I would suggest that is not a characterization. I think the United States has spilled more blood, more treasure, standing for freedom, liberating people across the world, and to go on Al Jazeera, a foreign network, broadcasting propaganda to nations that are hostile to us and to explicitly agree with the characterization of the United States as the world’s bully, I would suggest is not the conduct one would expect of a secretary of defense.

HAGEL: Senator, she said that was an observation.

CRUZ: I will point out that her quote was “the perception and the reality.” And with that, my time has expired. I look forward to a second round of questioning.

Sen. Thad Cochran (R-Miss.) on Tuesday became the first Republican to indicate he would vote to confirm Chuck Hagel as defense secretary.

Democrats appear to be lining up behind Hagel’s confirmation, but so far six Repulicans have said they will vote against Obama’s pick.

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) said Monday he was prepared to place a hold on Hagel’s nomination until Defense Secretary Leon Panetta testifies on the Benghazi attacks. With Democrats holding 55 Senate seats, at least four more Republicans would need to join Cochran to eliminate the threat of a filibuster on Hagel’s nomination.

AP,

I think we all know what he meant. However, “Jewish Lobby” is considered to be politically incorrect. Living in our PC society I would expect for him to grovel to the PC authorities and backtrack from those statements.

By the way, one the main principles of PC is that racism is an unpardonable crime and anyone who has shown racism or has uttered racially insensitive comments should be excluded from polite society. Or, at the very least, they should be disqualified from any political appointments. That’s why presidential candidates and political appointees undergo an equivalent of a cavity search as it pertains to any past statements they made. Obviously, you don’t think this is a bad idea. Just come out and admit it.

An older gentleman who was an engineer over there when he was kidnaipped you to have dinner with my folks and others at the Pickadilly Cafeteria. I was a University Radio News Director at the time.

It might be easier to ” Just come out and admit it.” if the tactics of PC were applied and the results were equal regardless of party affiliation. PC is just another way to say “Shut up”, no one should be a fan.

Well done, Lindsey. Really a great job calling out this sleaze for what he is.

You’re still getting primaried. Cheers.

That’s why presidential candidates and political appointees undergo an equivalent of a cavity search as it pertains to any past statements they made.

antifederalist on January 31, 2013 at 3:59 PM

The Democrat Presidential nominee in 2008 and 2012 underwent no such cavity search.

And those who tried were the ones labeled “racist” by your side of the aisle.

That’s because the doctrine of PC gives preferential treatment to blacks, Hispanics and other minorities. Therefore, their transgressions are overlooked.

@kim roy: Maybe my memory deceives me, but I’d swear Rosenberg wrote the AIPAC newsletter nearly three decades ago – ironically when Menachem Begin was PM.

Intra-Jewish political quarrels can be highly personal, and this guy sounds as if at some point he went over his own personal cliff.

Or maybe it’s just easier to achieve a certain type of prominence as an ex-Zionist Israel-bashing truth-to-power guy than as just one more pro-Israel writer. More notoriety, less intellectual competition. I mean, sheesh, look at Bagel.

Seth Halpern on January 31, 2013 at 3:53 PM

No doubt. I just knee jerked to branding him as a lying kook as soon as I saw MMFA.

He could very well be telling the truth, but he’s a leftist and that puts it into automatic doubt for me.

Maybe something happened to change his mind. Or Occam could be presiding and it’s as you say – the lazy way to be noticed.

No one is enjoying this ass kicking more than Nebraskan conservatives to whom upChuck lied to win the Senate seat. Back then he was a Reagan conservative–and the little Mrs. went along with the charade in order to be a senator’s wife. I hope her husband’s national humiliation today was worth it.
