Reid: The GOP really needs to stop bad-mouthing this recovery we’re in

posted at 3:51 pm on January 31, 2013 by Erika Johnsen

As Ed pointed out this morning, the White House’s more recent attitude on the pathetic state of the American economy has run somewhere along the lines of, “Maybe if we just don’t talk about it, people will forget that it actually exists” — but the report of the 4th quarter economic contraction at least roused them from their apathy just long enough to blame Republicans’ political tactics for the downturn.

In heralding what he expects will be a “strong, bipartisan vote” to extend the debt ceiling later this afternoon, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid pretty much seconded that thoughtful sentiment on the Senate floor (click the image to watch at RCP):

 photo Screenshot2013-01-31at30535PM_zpsce289adc.png

Just a brief comment on my friend, the Republican leader’s, statement. He continues bad-mouthing the recovery. We are in a recovery. The moral of the fourth quarter is a repudiation of the Republican playbook. Growth went down in the fourth quarter because of reduced government spending, and a reticence in the private sector as government fought over the fiscal cliff. And that fight came as a result of the Republicans being so unreasonable. … The economy was rejecting the austerity and brinkmanship… The Republican playbook of continually complaining about spending is something — we know we have to do something about spending, we understand that, but there’s more to making our economy recover than just continually harping on what’s going on with spending. …We also have to do something to have a fair program. … Is it fair that the Republicans continue to want to go after Social Security, Medicare, even food stamps, that benefits the poorest of the poor, let’s start talking about fairness.

Okay, if you’re turning the recently exploded food stamp program into some sort of politically unassailable sacred cow, and excoriating Republicans for ‘attacking’ the entitlement programs that are absolutely the main drivers of our unusustainable deficits, then clearly, you do not understand (or perhaps, care) that we need to “do something” about spending.

And, I’m sorry — “bad-mouthing”? Does mentioning the irrefutable fact that our employment situation has grown so much worse during Obama’s tenure offend you somehow? Via Jim Pethokoukis, this is the share of the labor force that is actually working or actively seeking a job:

013113jobs2

More “fairness” is precisely what we don’t need to be talking about — and the federal government’s attempts to orchestrate “fairness” is exactly what’s perpetuating the longest recovery, evah. And yes, one of the reasons behind the fourth quarter GDP contraction was very likely a reduction of government spending — because there are certain sectors of our economy that are specifically set up to work with the government, and they can’t readjust to the absence of that spending overnight. But the overarching point is that the government does far too many things, and we’ve gotten used to an economy that is not nearly as robust, productive, or innovative as it could be if the government would just stop trying to do so many things and spending our money for us.

Growth went down in the fourth quarter because of reduced government spending

The fact that one Republican won’t call this garbage on this lie speaks to why the Republicans are now a permanent minority.

IBD reported the actual numbers.

“Congress is applying medieval techniques,” he wrote, “bleeding the patient while ignoring the indicators both here and abroad as to how that’s working.”

An interesting theory. Except that while the BEA says defense spending declined in Q4, overall federal spending was up $31 billion compared with Q4 2011 and up $98 billion compared with Q3 2012, according to monthly spending reports out of the Treasury Department.

Real numbers say different than what this fraud is putting out there for the stupid. Ted Cruz. Rand Paul. You’re up.

MNHawk on January 31, 2013 at 4:02 PM

He continues bad-mouthing the recovery.

This infuriates me! I have never liked Harry Reid, but he has completely left the reservation.

What recovery!? Is recovery now defined as the period between recessions? It can’t be, because even with that definition we are definitely no longer in a “recovery”.

This was the weakest “recovery” we have ever seen. It is now no longer a “recovery”. The momeny GDP goes negative factually means the economy is not growing. How is that recovery?

We used to have a saying when I worked as an EMT. We want a rescue not a recovery. A recovery is when someone is already dead. A rescue means there is still hope of saving them. We need a rescue in this country, but lost that chance with Romney/Ryan. Alas, we are stuck with the body “recovery” of our Democrat President and idiotic Senate leader.

Democrats like to claim that the GOP is being unreasonable and that addressing the looming problems of entitlements will harm the poor.

Well I’m not poor. Far from it as a matter of fact and I want OUT of Social Security.

The FACT that the Socialists Democrats refuse to allow us the freedom to choose (heh) whether or not to participate in the program is what’s truly unreasonable.

By how many trillions can unfunded liabilities be reduced if those of us who so choose were able to opt out of Social Security, Medicare, and now Obamacare?

The Democrats betray their real intentions by refusing to allow responsible adults to opt out of the nanny state and take care of ourselves.

Harry, you’ve got us all wrong. We love money (us capitalists). We love to be in the black … it’s just that the economy sucks. The best way to make money is to bet against the DNC & Obama.

Who would have thought that Obama would have chased away cheaper fuel & energy prices, while pitching the Chevy Volt Dolt, instead of shutting down coal energy plants and nixing the Keystone deal. I made money as a private investor … my company didn’t (high prices eroded our earnings).

Kind of like the best way to have made money between December and today would have been to purchase bullets and shares in arms manufacturers.

So, if you want your personal wealth to grow, ask yourself, “What would be the right course of action?” In the case of guns we knew that Obama and liberals would play Alinsky’s playbook and crap on our 2nd amendment rights, or die trying.

It’s like that scene in When Harry Met Sally only the words would have been, “I’ll have the guy in the corner booth is choking on!”

Well … that strategy did work wonders for the election.

In any event, everyone on the left (which includes just about all the MSM and academia) keeps crowing about how great things are and how they are always getting better. The help of the Fed keeping interest rates artificially low so that housing prices can be levitated a good 60% above their actual value and debt service can be temporarily kept 80% below its true cost helps this leftist fantasy along – together with the denial of just about everyone that the Fed will ever have to actually unwind its position and let markets return to fair value or the even crazier delusion that the Fed will be able to do that “at the appropriate time” (which the Fed has never accomplished) without any real ill effects … ROFLMAO.

Face it, we live the delusional state of the American Socialist Superstate. Reality not allowed … though illegals are welcomed as if the American Socialist Superstate is the property of the world and American citizens are the cause of all the world’s problems, deserving of the punishment that the Indonesian Imbecile has vowed to bring to us.

They actually cared about things like long-term unemployment, declining labor force participation, and hundreds of billions of dollars being transferred from middle-class taxpayers to wealthy government bond holders as the national debt grows and grows.

Now the progressives have taken over. They care only about exploding government spending on “the poor.” They have no conscience about debt. They do not care about the unemployed.

It is not just the poorest of the poor who collect medicare and Social Security. If these are what is driving the deficit, you have to talk about them. If you do not restrain the growth in them, you will have to pass a new means of funding them because there are not enough workers anymore. A sales tax might do the trick but you will never hear him call for one.

If the recovery were going as swell as Harry says it is, we wouldn’t need to be focusing on the rising cost of increased participation in the food stamp program. He’s an idiot.

Funny … not even a mention of MediCAID, which is the truly un-Constitutional feral government leech program for the poor. MediCAID is the real problem. It is unfunded by anything and is exactly the program through which BarkyCare is trying to kill the health insurance industry and make everyone dependent on the feral government for health care (not just insurance but care) which will also allow the feral government to dictate to every individual what he can and cannot do – as the feral government is “paying for their care and the consequences of their poor decisions”.

MediCAID is the real threat and it is the dangerous program that is being supercharged under BarkyCare. But MediCAID doesn’t get a mention from the despicable, scumbag liar, Hairy Reed … big surprise.

When you factor in 8-10% real inflation instead of what the 0bama regime uses the GDP lost about 6% last year. The understated inflation has been SOP the entire first term with the economic illiterates in charge. That is why the labor market participation is down so much. Tough to hide that number with understated inflation. However, the low IQers that vote exclusively for the democrat party (& need the party identification to know on the ballot) only believe the propagandists that 1+1=POTATO.

After what Harry Reid did during the Presidential election….you know, when he stood in the Senate and made ridiculous, slanderous, and provably false accusations about Mitt Romney and the GOP did pretty much nothing….a party with guts would make it their mission to ensure every word that brainless tool vomits is instantly rebutted….and a nice sized boot is left in one of his orifices.

Reid is lying. According to Daniel Harsanyi at RealClearPolitics.com, “In the fourth quarter of 2012, Washington spent $908 billion, which was $30 billion more than it spent in the last quarter of 2011 and nearly $100 billion more than it spent in the third quarter of 2012.”
