Video: No, the father of a Sandy Hook victim wasn’t “heckled” by gun-rights supporters

posted at 4:31 pm on January 29, 2013 by Allahpundit

Here’s an example of a story not only being too good to check but being so good — potentially — that it warranted a little “help” from the media to reach that full potential. It has everything a fair-and-balanced gun-control advocate/reporter could want: An eminently sympathetic victim calmly making the case for more regulations while the ogres known as “gun-rights supporters” try to silence him by shouting him down. It’s a passion play, the supreme manifestation of what Obama was trying to achieve by having kids onstage when he signed his executive memoranda on gun control a few weeks ago. If you oppose new gun regs then you’re basically in favor of murdering children. Heckling the father of a boy killed in Newtown is simply the logical conclusion of that impulse.

Except that’s not what happened. I’m going to send you over to Twitchy to watch the vid (click the image below to watch), but first you must watch the clips at MSNBC and HuffPo to see how the media’s crack video editors are presenting the exchange. It’s not “deceptive,” it’s outright propaganda designed to demonize gun-rights supporters. But it’s useful to gun-control activists as a parable of how fanatic and terrible their opponents are so naturally it’s making the rounds. Piers, of course, bought it hook, line, and sinker and doubtless will defend getting fake-outraged about it even after he sees the unedited video:

But then, Piers is also wont to say things like this:

Exit question: If you’re going to take the position that all other rights, including freedom of speech, must bow to regulation if it’s designed to protect children, why circumscribe it by saying “by a gun”? Does protecting children from murder by knives or arson not quite rise to the same level?

The gun control faithful have a long history of respectful and reasoned debate of the issues. So, not surprising in the least.

If you watch this you can see that the audience was responding to the father’s clear and repeated demand for a justification to own something like a Bushmaster. On the second request and after glaring around at the audience he heard dissenting comments. Not heckling.

But it is a lie from MSNBC. Who is keeping track of all the lies they tell? Certainly not NBC.

A murderer killed his son, not a weapon. For some reason, Morgan thinks inanimate objects have more moral responsibility than people do.

And to answer his question, the reason AR-15s should be legal is the same as why any other firearm should be legal, because they all function the same. The reason nobody answered right away is because nobody else thought it was a serious question.

Not a new tactic.

The state must declare the child to be the most precious treasure of the people. As long as the government is perceived as working for the benefit of the children, the people will happily endure almost any curtailment of liberty and almost any deprivation.

I would like the same, but all their restrictions are BEFORE use.

Ask a liberal if they are for the same restrictions on Abortion or Free Speech as on they are on the Second Amendment?

Before you speak or have an abortion you must:
1) Attend a safety course.
2) Register for each abortion or article.
3) Purchase liability insurance.
4) A waiting period for each abortion or article.
5) Must be over 21. (Is there an exception for purchasing a gun for rape or incest? There would be fewer rapes and incest.)
6) You must be mentally competent. (How many reporters are seeing mental health professionals or taking medication?)
7) Reporters would be limited on the number of words and women would be limited on the number of abortions. (Magazine size)
8) Some reporters would be banned for their appearance and some women will be forced to abstain because of how they look. (They look dangerous like a pistol grip.)

In the past 100 years there have been 77 rampage killing sprees in the US. More than 1/4 of those took place in either CA or NY. Here is a partial chronological list that shows when and where they happened.

Sep 5, 1927: Evansville, IN – 15 injured
Nov 24, 1932: Seattle, WA – 6 killed, 13 injured
Apr 25, 1940: Burlington, IA – 15-20 injured
Jul 8, 1945: Salina, UT: 9 killed, 19 injured
Jan 21, 1958: Lincoln, NE: 10 killed
Jan 12, 1965: Gardena, CA: 1 killed, 26 injured
Apr 5, 1969: Harrisburg, PA: 3 killed, 17 injured
Mar 28, 1970: New York, NY: 7 killed, 15 injured

This is for those of you that thought the LEFT played fair, and had some human decency in them. The truth is the LEFT doesn’t care about any of the kids murdered at Sandy Hook, it only cares about using the dead children to reach their goal of disarming everyone.

Why I don’t have any LEFTIST friends, I don’t associate myself with human excrement.

This behavior is frighteningly similar to the methods employed by a certain historic figure in the 1930′s as he came to total power over his country. He also used or created events to justify his next grab for additional power. Didn’t work out so well for the world.

/yeah, I went there. The analogy is quite appropriate, we just haven’t reached the point where he has absolute power where the worst atrocities were committed.

I don’t see this on the list. No guns but the worst school killing in our history.

So have the offending outlets stopped showing their edited version?

Cindy Munford on January 29, 2013 at 6:29 PM

Why do you think he was there? They did not want him questioned. If he was then they’d demonize. It is part of the grand plan to silence dissent. Trot out the parents and the kids….the lapdog media eats it up.

This comment is not a criticism of Mr. Heslin, just of MSNBC and those who edited the clip.

Suppose that Mr. Heslin had said, as he did: “I ask if there’s anybody in this room that can give me one reason or challenge this question … why anybody in this room needs to have one of these assault-style weapons or military weapons or high-capacity clips. … Not one person can answer that question.” And then nobody in the audience had made any comment, due to a desire not to be portrayed by MSNBC as a heckler.

What would we see on MSNBC tomorrow? “The father of a Sandy Hook victim, testifying before the Connecticut legislature yesterday, asked whether anyone could give him one reason why anyone needed to have assault-style weapons or high-capacity clips. Nobody spoke up. Not even supporters of gun rights were willing to defend assault weapons or high-capacity clips or give any reason why anyone might need one.”

No children were killed with an Assault Weapon at Sandy Hook… It was in the trunk. the Pistols were in the School.

.

The media reports that the Bushmaster was in the auto were incorrect.
The police have said that all the deaths were from .223 ammo used in the Bushmaster.

J_Crater on January 29, 2013 at 4:44 PM

.
I understand the confusion from the original poster; I, too thought the Bushmaster was in the trunk, because… initially the police said it was, and that everyone was killed with pistols.

Honestly, I don’t know what to believe. Was the first report true, but changed to fit what someone wanted the story to be, or was the first report crap and the next iteration was true, or… ?

The conflicting/contradictory reports have yet to be resolved, unless one of you heard something I missed.

Piers,

The rights of my child to not be bullied supersedes your right to talk. So, SHUT UP.

I mean, you might bully him. He is severely autistic and acts strangely. And someday you might point that out. So, I proactively forbid you from speaking, ever again. To save my child the stigma of being called ‘weird’.

MunDane68 on January 29, 2013 at 7:19 PM

The chairman who reprimanded the audience and threatened to clear the room, was the only disrespectful one there.

One man slapped the audience for not answering a question and the next man slapped the audience for answewring it.

Good cop/bad cop in the courtroom.
