Thank you for that comment bofh. I find this stuff very interesting, yet have not pulled the trigger on learning more about it. I have learned a bit or two about metadata attached to visuals and such. Fascinating how much info can be gleaned from it, and with relative ease. I always appreciate these types of tips and info. ; )

It’s the #1 tactic — blow a real problem up to 10x its natural size, and propose a “comprehensive” solution…that has 10% of even trying to address the real problem and is larded on with 90% feel-good bunkum and political payoffs.

We’ll find neither fiscal sanity nor respect for the Feds by repeating the same gimmick.

What I haven’t seen mentioned in any of the coverage is how lame the URL is that lead to the photo, and how simple it would have been for the dummies to have recognized the prank. Let me pontificate a bit (not aimed at you in particular slade73)

Learning a little bit about this can prevent all sorts of Bad Things from happening, whether on the web or in email links. It’s not all that complex, and takes only a moment.

Briefly, the address format is servername.domain/path. Always look for the first single slash (note: “slash”, not backslash) reading from left to right. The text immediately to the left of that slash is the domain, printed as domainname followed by dot followed by top-level-domain (e.g. “com” or “gov” etc), and it can’t easily be faked. Everything further to the left of the domain refers to server names and is of no direct interest to us. It’s of interest only because it can be used to fake a readily-recognizable domain name, for the purpose of fooling the casual reader.

In this case, http://whitehouse.gov1.info/camp-david/index.html, the first single slash comes right after “info”, so following our parsing rules, the domain name is “gov1.info”. It is NOT “whitehouse.gov” even though your eye wants you to think it is. The “whitehouse” part of it is just the name of that particular server on the gov1.info domain.

If you look closely at the actual links in many phishing emails, they often use this sort of obfuscation to make the link appear genuine (regardless of what the displayed text of the link says).

It’s the only way. I’ve been either on the phone or emailing or visiting offices for 2 days straight now. This is what we did in 2006/2007 for months. It’s exhausting and it’s frustrating and back then, it was also a supposed done deal. Until the fax machines started running out of paper and the phone lines started melting.
