Open thread: Sunday morning talking heads

posted at 8:01 am on January 27, 2013 by Allahpundit

The hallmark of Sunday morning political programming is redundancy, but not today. Looks like each of the big four is going in a different direction — NBC will talk budgets, Fox will cover women in combat, ABC will do immigration, and CBS will handle gun control. Expect Paul Ryan to elaborate on the idea that sometimes “prudence” is the best way to thwart Obama. He’ll also discuss the future of the GOP, which, if Gregory’s doing his job, will require a rebuttal to Bobby Jindal’s point on Thursday night that spreadsheets and powerpoints about federal spending are a losing message. If you’re not up for that, you’ve got McCain on “This Week” making the evergreen case for amnesty and Dianne Feinstein on “Face the Nation” bravely trying to explain how her assault-weapons ban won’t end up in the Senate’s trash bin the moment she brings it to the floor.

The line-up via National Journal:

Meet the Press hosts Rep. Paul Ryan, R-Wisc., Heritage President Jim DeMint and NAACP CEO Ben Jealous

Face the Nation hosts NYC Police Commissioner Ray Kelly, Sen. Diane Feinstein, D-Calif., former Speaker Newt Gingrich and Rep. Marsha Blackburn, R-Tenn.

This Week hosts Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., Sen. Robert Menendez, D-N.J., and Rep. David Schweikert, R-Ariz.

Fox News Sunday hosts former Congressional candidate and first female combat pilot Martha McSally, ret. Lt. Gen. Jerry Boykin, Sen. Bob Corker, R-Tenn., and Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin

State of the Union hosts ret. Gen. Stanley McChrystal, former CIA Director Michael Hayden, Saratoga Springs Mayor Mia Love, Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell and Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker

I couldn’t care less. The problem is that too many buttnuts out there do. And they have right to vote.

My view is that, if Conservatives didn’t go on these shows, the hosts would be bled white for lack of anything to do. Preaching to the choir goes only so far, and not for very long.

I say to starve the liberals, and let them die on the vine. So to speak, of course.

Sarah Palin is an incompetent scaredy cat who runs from challenging interview situations. She wouldn’t last 10 seconds on one of the shows. I think we all saw how well she handled herself in 2008. She does best when handed speeches to read and when people write Facebook posts for her. Her big talent is winking at the camera. And, hey, that has to count for something.

bluegill on January 27, 2013 at 9:23 AM

Palin should really have gone the Oprah route rather than the politics route. Being a billionaire TV host sounds like a much better gig than being President.

Ryan is an intriguing case study in whether or not a former VP nominee can become a viable Presidential candidate… The last three had issues that made this unlikely – Lieberman was out of step with his party on foreign policy, Edwards is a complete scumbag, and Palin wasn’t ready for primetime.

Why aren’t there any programs as follow-ups to Hillary’s !!! appearances before Congress?

All I’ve seen about her since she testified is about her glasses and that she owns the next presidency.

scalleywag on January 27, 2013 at 9:43 AM

Ryan is trying to set up the grassroots for saying we are not shutting down the government for any budget battle. Between the “get the next time” and “we can’t hurt this fragile economy” we will get only token pushback where the leadership will use the same tactic as Obama to get things through. Wait till the last minute, talk about the Apocalypse, pass the “patch” that kicks the can down the road or gives Obama what he wanted.

It is isn’t even worth supporting them. The leadership doesn’t see point at which they should stop Obama. They will cling to a a 10% approval rating getting worse then finally do the right thing even 2 years from the next election.

Wouldn’t you like to see her put them in their place like Newt can do? She cannot do it. Her sentences come out like a jumbled mess and she isn’t able to display very deep understanding of policy. I would be happy to see her prove me wrong. However, as others have said, she just doesn’t seem ready for primetime. And she doesn’t seem to have improved much, if at all, since 2008.

bluegill on January 27, 2013 at 9:55 AM

Rush had an interesting monologue on Palin haters in our own party.

I got 2 Words for you Palin commenters.

Joe Biden

Joe Biden has the full support of his party and the massive gaffes he makes are met with the support of the whole Democrat machine. The Democrats do not allow people in their party agree with Republicans about even Joe Biden. Biden is defended and holds the views of his party. They never forget that.

The same goes for Palin. There is nothing any more cliche about Palin then Newt Gingrich or Ryan when she is talking. The difference is with White Males the Democrat party doesn’t go after them as a threat to them and so Republicans feel comfortable that White Male after White Male is the Best Republican representative. Then election time comes and the evil, white male smear machine goes into action for the one millionth time and people can’t figure out why even a fairly sainted guy like Romney ends up as the Devil.

If you have any common sense people you would not agree with and let yourself be influenced by who the Democrats hate.

Try not to abandon people take risks to speak about sweeping change and then complain about who is left over to lead this party.

You want to call me a liberal over and over and over to get a rise out of me, but really you’re just mad because I’m not afraid to say the truth about Palin; i.e., she is a purposefully divisive, anti-intellectual lightweight who is not ready for primetime. But she is right on many issues… now if only she were articulate enough to persuade people or make the case for conservative ideals. Look, the woman talks in cliches. What else can I say? It’s obvious she isn’t exactly one of our brightest conservative lights. She’s kind of an embarrassment, to be honest.

I’m fine with that because the only way to shut Biden up would have ended Ryan’s political career and gotten him arrested for assaulting the sitting VP. But he was visibly nervous about the situation because I think that he understood the stakes.

I agree. But, a better question yet: Why did the GOP approve George Stephanopolous as the New Hampshire debate moderator, allowing him to introduce the “war on women” theme?

bw222 on January 27, 2013 at 10:34 AM

Self-defeating idiocy is beyond my comprehension.

Props for being honest.

Well, considering my real boyfriend moons over Christina Hendricks (only reason he watches Mad Men), I feel it only fair that I get a crush as well.

I wonder what the reaction would be to a real Conservative TV talking head show?

Moderates R Us and Eat the GOP leaves half the nation with the TV off.

Speakup on January 27, 2013 at 10:00 AM

Look at how the left gets in a tizzy about FNC and Fox News is not conservative, but pure RINO.

The closest thing to a conservative is Sean Hannity with his 60 IQ: “You’re a great American, I’m a great American. Did I tell you that I used to be in construction? Did I tell you that I play tennis? And, next we’ll hear from the Architect, Karl Rove.”

bw222 on January 27, 2013 at 10:46 AM

I love Sarah, but I’ve moved on.

Should I get beat up by everyone, then? :)

HERE is a Sunday Talk show that might be worth listening too:

http://www.breitbart.com/Big-Government/2013/01/26/Palin-We-Havent-Yet-Begun-to-Fight-Exclusive-Interview-with-Breitbart-News

Former Governor Sarah Palin, and the 45th President of the United States, bwhwhahahahahaaaa

1. What’s next for you?

Short term: I encourage others to step out in faith, jump out of the comfort zone, and broaden our reach as believers in American exceptionalism. That means broadening our audience. I’m taking my own advice here as I free up opportunities to share more broadly the message of the beauty of freedom and the imperative of defending our republic and restoring this most exceptional nation. We can’t just preach to the choir; the message of liberty and true hope must be understood by a larger audience.

Focus on the 2014 election is also imperative. It’s going to be like 2010, but this time around we need to shake up the GOP machine that tries to orchestrate away too much of the will of constitutional conservatives who don’t give a hoot how they do it in DC. DC is out of touch, obviously. Voices on the right like Mark Levin, Rush, and the writers here at Breitbart have come out strongly against the “go along to get along” politicians who wave the white flag before the battle even begins. We’re not going to be able to advance the cause of limited constitutional government unless we deal with these big government enablers on our side. And this all ties into the problem of crony capitalism and the permanent political class in the Beltway. We need to consistently take them on election after election – ever vigilant.

As far as long-term plans, the door is wide open. I know the country needs more truth-telling in the media, and I’m willing to do that. So, we shall see. And always in the center of it all I have an awesome, full, exciting, and large family living in a very unique part of America that keeps me hopping! I love it!

2. Where do you think the country stands at the beginning of the President’s 2nd term?

Before the November election I wrote that we all know what Obama’s second term will look like because we’ve seen his first. I said: “We know what we will get from a second Obama term. We will get the same failed policies. We will get Obamacare locked into law. We will get a debt crisis. We will get more inflation and higher gas prices. We will get tax increases. We will get fewer jobs. We will get more small businesses collapsing under the weight of higher taxes and unfair regulation. We will get more corruption and crony capitalism favoring the Obama administration’s friends. We will get less domestic energy development and increased dependence on terrorist sponsoring foreign regimes for our energy needs. We will get a ‘blame America first’ foreign policy that bows to our enemies and snubs our friends like Israel and leaves America and the world less safe. We will get less opportunity and security for ourselves and for our children.”

Predicting the future has never been easier because here we are! Already we see higher taxes, a stagnant economy, the same inflationary monetary policies, Obamacare looming like a dark cloud over small businesses, yet another demand for “debt ceiling” increases, continued stonewalling about the tragic Benghazi attacks, a Secretary of Defense nominee who has a history of being antagonistic to our ally Israel, and the attack on our Second Amendment rights by an administration that has no respect for the Constitution or the separation of powers.

The problem is that some on the Right are now skittish because of the lost 2012 election. They shouldn’t be. Conservatism didn’t lose. A moderate Republican candidate lost after he was perceived to alienate working class Reagan Democrat and Independent voters who didn’t turn out for him as much as they did for the McCain/Palin ticket in 2008. Granted, those same voters also didn’t turn out for Obama as strongly either. We had an election defined by a biased media plus millions of voters who sat it out in disgust. As long as we allow the media and GOP establishment to tell us who our nominees must be, we can expect to lose. I’m not interested in losing. America’s next generation can’t afford another loss.

3. The MSM have declared both you and the Tea Party dead and buried. Reaction?

I was raised to never retreat and to pick battles wisely, and all in due season. When it comes to defending our republic, we haven’t begun to fight! But we delight in those who underestimate us.

FWIW.

O/T I woke up last night to some National Review sponsored talkfest on CSpan. The smart Republicans think the Tea Party just wants the government shut down. Clueless.

Cindy Munford on January 27, 2013 at 11:10 AM

The problem with the GOP leadership is its goal is just to maintain leadership, not to win. It’s kind of like wanting to be the coach of the Detroit Lions for life.
