WaPo/ABC poll shows Hillary Clinton popularity peaking …

posted at 8:31 am on January 23, 2013 by Ed Morrissey

The Washington Post frames this as a contest between a wildly popular potential presidential candidate and a decidedly unpopular Congress, but that’s not the real showdown coming on Capitol Hill today.  It’s going to be the battle between the popular hazy image of Hillary Clinton as the leading American woman in politics, and the reality of her bungled tenure at State as she gets pressed on the details of Benghazi and the assumptions of the Arab Spring that play into it.

However, she does have a big head start on that collision:

As she heads to Capitol Hill this morning to testify regarding the death of four Americans in Benghazi, Libya, Hillary Clinton has something her former legislative colleagues lack: the broad support of the American public.

Fully 67 percent of all Americans in a new Washington Post-ABC News poll now express favorable views of the outgoing secretary of state, a record high in the survey for Clinton, albeit by a single percentage point. By contrast, just 19 percent of people said they approved of the way Congress was doing its job in a Post-ABC poll released last week.

Clinton has nearly unanimous support from fellow Democrats — 91 percent — in the new poll, also a career best. She also scores a gaudy 65 percent approval score among independents and more than one in three (37 percent) of Republicans believe she is doing a good job. That’s more than double the number of Republicans who approve of the way President Obama is doing his job.

If I had to guess, that’s because Republicans want to hang all of the blame for Benghazi on Obama, and Democrats don’t want to hang it on anyone.  But there are significant questions about what Hillary Clinton knew, and what she should have known, well before the attack on the Benghazi consulate that killed four Americans and drove the US out of eastern Libya.  CNN reports on the tough questions Hillary will have to answer today in her last significant appearance as Secretary of State:

CBS News reporter Sharyl Attkisson took to Twitter last night to remind everyone that Hillary’s State Department has refused to cooperate with FOIA requests intended to get to the bottom of Benghazi and Foggy Bottom:

Additionally, CBS News has repeatedly requested the promised surveillance video from Benghazi but it has not been provided. We’ve also asked for any White House photos taken that night, as well as an accounting of Pres. Obama’s decisions and actions. None has been provided….At a press conference 11/14/12, President Obama stated that his Admin. has provided all info regarding ‘what happened in Benghazi.’

Maybe Congress can get Hillary Clinton to answer Attkisson’s questions, because State has refused:

Don’t expect that high approval rating to last forever.

As she heads to Capitol Hill this morning to testify regarding the death of four Americans in Benghazi, Libya, Hillary Clinton has something her former legislative colleagues lack: the broad support of the American public.

Leave it to the MSM to skew the news to favor the left.

Hillary Clinton has been dodging testifying for months including “health” and “scheduling” conflicts. But the lie above is downright offensive. The pig-in-a-pantsuit isn’t heading to Capitol Hill to testify regarding the death of four Americans in Libya. She is headed to the Hill to testify about the administration of her Department. Why security was so lax. Why the consulate was still open in Benghazi after the Brits and Red Cross found it too dangerous to keep their operations open. etc. etc. etc.

In short, this isn’t about the deaths of Ambassador Stevens and the others. This is about how the State Department has been run under a woman with absolutely no foreign policy experience beyond dodging snipers in Bosnia. And BTW, the media is mentioning that four State employees lost their jobs without ever mentioning that none of them were actually fired.

It is not only gobsmacking incompetence on Hillary’s part, but the fault lies with the disengaged American people. Most people have no idea what happened there, nor do they care. Sadly, some actually believe that Clinton will come clean (a switch for her) and lay out the facts.

As for a run at POTUS, Clinton is too old and tired to even consider it. At our expense, she has amassed a fortune. She isn’t going to spend a dime of her ill-gotten gains to strive for a position for which is not only UNqualified (much like the current resident in chief), but desires a quiet retirement where, like her lascivious hubby, can reap million$ just from showing up and speaking a few words.

Anyone expecting to get the truth from Hillary Rodham is delusional.

We know how this three ring circus is going to play out. The headline about her ‘popularity’ didn’t come out by coincidence (I know–I’m expert at stating the obvious).

I’m curious to see just how the Pubs soft-soap their questions, how Hillary and her lawyers play on her recent ‘health issues’, and how the MSM push a PR campaign of sympathy for the outgoing Secretary. And that’s key, I think–she’s leaving the Cabinet so it’s time to stop the witch hunt now.

Liam on January 23, 2013 at 8:54 AM

Liam,

Keep something in mind. This is an open hearing. It really isn’t about finding the truth about Benghazi since that would require closed hearings where classified questions could be asked. This is about the GOP asking Hillary Clinton uncomforatable questions about her mismanagement of the State Department. Democrats lauding her “public service” as she leaves office. And Hillary Clinton saying nothing of specificity but citing the department’s own investigation as proof that they’ve made substantive changes in the wake of Benghazi.

The clown car analogy is apt and, yes, the fact that this poll came out today and not when she was pretending to be ill is not by coincidence.

Ed, you underestimate the power of the low-information voter. Don’t forget he whooped our a$$ last election. No matter what comes out of this hearing, come 2016 this is ancient history for the low-information voter (and that assumes he paid any attention at all). Hillary goes on a few MTV/Access Hollywood type shows, talks about abortion, calls Republicans sexists for asking questions on Benghazi, and come inauguration day Hillary is being sworn in as President. I’m with Rush, the low-information voter will be the end of America.

It all depends on what happens with Obama the next 4 years. If the 2nd term is like the 1st(or worse), it’ll be tough for the Dems to hang onto the White House for a 3rd straight term. That’s a rare occurrence in modern times since inevitably the electorate gets tired of the incumbent party after awhile.

Keep in mind that a large majority of 2012 voters still blamed Bush for our economic woes which helped Obama secure 51% of the vote for his reelection. After 8 years, passing the buck will be a much harder task.

Remember that there is now an entire generation of Americans who do not remember the Clinton years. All they know is what they’ve been told: Hilary is a super-awesome empowered woman, and Bill “gave us” the best economy in modern times until the Republicans tried to impeach him for a BJ and then Bush came along and ruined everybody’s good time with terrorism, war, deficits, “tax cuts for the rich”, “deregulation of the financial sector” etc.

There are basically three kinds of voters on the Left: the hardcore Left (which is now the mainstream of the Democratic party). Then you have the misinformed voter who operates on assumptions they absorb from pop culture and mainstream news media. Then you have the willfully ignorant. They know better, they just don’t care. They want to sit at the cool kids’ table with Jay Z. The third group is persuadable only through personal pain (i.e. econonmic & social consequences.) The second group can be educated if you get their attention. The hardcore Left is beyond redemption and must be annihilated totally.

Nonsense. She’s been a good Sec. of State.
We’ll find out what happened at Benghazi. She’s answering the questions people like you said she’d never answer, right now.

chumpThreads on January 23, 2013 at 9:58 AM

LOL…”I don’t have my Benghazi talking points yet and don’t know how the hell Hill screwed that one, but she’s been brilliant!!!” Typical Maher trained seal.

Tracking Hillary’s career is like tracking Outlaw Josey Wales….easy, she leaves dead men wherever she goes.

Bevan on January 23, 2013 at 10:00 AM

Hillary has not done one thing to advance the rights and safety of women in these areas of influence from Obama’s foreign policy. There is not a single place where women are more free, and nearly all are worse, for Muslim women, but devestatingly so for Christian and Jews and animist, Druze, etc.

winoceros on January 23, 2013 at 10:03 AM

Hillary hatred = FEAR!

All of the snark and vitriol directed at her is the product of profound, deep-seated fear of a strong, competent woman who will be the next President of the United States, if she chooses to run.

That fear runs all the way down from the Krauthammers to the most brain-dead commenters here on HA (yes, I’m looking at Liam and VegasRick, but the list is long).

Keep up the fear-babble, losers. You’ll need the practice for 2016!

This post brought to us from a former Child playing with matches
star on Politico who, posing as an Atheist,(as if you have
the mental faculties to differentiate between Believers
and Non believers) tries to “school” us brain dead hicks on the Bible….

You used to be more effective in YOUR vitriol when you
confined yourself to Down Syndrome screeds against Palin and
her family…at least those posts had appeal to
Uppereastside….lostmymothersomewhere..verbalabuse…nonpartisan
and those not named to protect their inability to function in
Society…
Stupid.

Not every Senator proposes new legislation, but quite a few of them propose crap legislation. I’d rather the former than the latter.

chumpThreads on January 23, 2013 at 9:58 AM

Please list her positive “accomplishments” as Secretary of State.

Then please list her positive “accomplishments” as the Junior Senator from New York. Prefaced of course by why she was “qualified” for that job in the first place.

If you could have done those things, you would have done so by now. Thanks for admitting that she and you are both failures.

Nobody fears The Quitter.

She was a spent force in politics the moment she walked away from her job in 2009. She didn’t even earn the disticnction of being hated. She only rose to the level of ridicule. Her rise was meteroic, as was her fall.

Christopher Hitchens (No One Left To Lie To) was wrong. There are plenty left for her to lie to and she’ll never stop lying until she takes her last breath.

Four good men dead, Iran inching ever-closer to a nuclear showdown, anti-American sentiment at a fever-pitch, and an Arab Spring that was anything but, and this garners her a 67% approval rating?

We are through the looking glass here, people.

Our current pResident walked away from his “job” as Senator from Illinois halfway thru his term, to run for higher office. Orwell was right.

Once again, thanks so much for admitting that you can’t name a single Hillary “qualification” or “accomplishment”.

A+

How has she been a good Secretary of State? The reset embarrassment with Russia? The Benghazi attack? Losing Egypt to the Muslim Brotherhood? Iran inching closer to a nuke? Syrians being slaughtered by their own government? Backing Zelaya in Honduras as he tried to illegally hold onto power beyond his term? She’s been a disaster.

“Not every Senator proposes new legislation”? In 8 years? Then what the hell was she there for? Was being a Senator just a springboard for a Presidential run? Sorry, but after Obama, I want someone with some actual accomplishments on their resume regardless of their political ideology. Hillary has done nothing in the last 20 years aside from be married to a President, get elected to the Senate twice, and be appointed as Secretary of State. That’s window dressing. There’s nothing of substance there.

Huma is going to be jealous; That tongue bath that Babs Boxer just gave Hellary during her turn to “question” her was pretty passionate.

Only the establishments of both parties. And the media. And the trained-seal Obots. Nobody really fears that pickled withered hack known as Hillary. I’d be happy to send that whole freakish clan to political oblivion. Bring her on.

ddrintn on January 23, 2013 at 10:11 AM

Why would anyone take this poll at face value. It’s obviously bunk.

Hillary’s in for some light spanking today by a few Republicans who want this Benghazi business to go away as much as the Dems do, so WaPo/Abc toss up a fake poll to take some of the edge off. It’s called getting in front of the narrative.

No, she didn’t “lose” Egypt. Egypt was and is a very difficult situation. Same for Iran, Syria, etc. There are no easy solutlions to these situations, and she has kept us engaged without going to war.

I’ve already answered your point about the Senate. Read it again.

As a strong, competent woman, I hereby throw my hat into the 2016 ring (we’ll work out the Constitutional issues later).

Alright boys, Chump, said that you have a profound, deep-seated fear of strong, competent women. Who is afraid of voting for me?

Resist We Much on January 23, 2013 at 10:24 AM

She takes all their five minutes herself. Maybe they’re giving her the rope, so to speak.

Real time questions now. So far she has said she learned about the attack at 4:00pm (on the dot, I guess) and her first call was to Tom Donilan (sp).

Now she says no need to talk to the evacuees.

Please don’t confuse the Unit with Facts; it is not programmed to respond in that area.

The original question, which chump will never be able to (honestly) answer, was basically this: “What qualified Hillary to become the Junior Senator from New York, a state that she had never lived in until she carpetbagged her way into the NYC suburbs, solely to run for that office?”

The Democrat Gigolo from Massachusetts, who wants to replace Hillary as SOS, at least worked in his home state for years, at both the private and government levels, before he ran for the US Senate. In the decades he’s been the MA “Senator”, he has done some decent work on the various military committees he’s been assigned to, but that is about all. He’s also been very successful in getting Post Offices named for constituents.

Egypt was completely mishandled. The Obama Administration abandoned Mubarek and pushed for immediate elections when the Muslim Brotherhood was the only group with the organization in place at the time to run a successful national campaign. And BTW, even after it’s become obvious that the Muslim Brotherhood ain’t exactly our friends, we’re still sending them financial and military aid. Why?

And no, you didn’t answer my point about the Senate. You just excused Hillary for accomplishing nothing in 8 years as if that’s normal and perfectly acceptable.

Doughboy on January 23, 2013 at 10:29 AM

Shrillary is a rambling bore. Unfortunately, so are most of the rest of them.

I loved how Johnson got her riled up – too bad he only had 5 minutes.
