Rand Paul to Hillary: Let’s face it, you should have been fired over Benghazi

posted at 12:41 pm on January 23, 2013 by Allahpundit

Via Gateway Pundit, I figured he might be the boldest Republican questioner but I had no idea how bold. The key line: “I think it’s good that you’re accepting responsibility because no one else is.” He’s taking dead aim at the insulting charade of buck-stops-here bravado among American politicians who are happy to “show leadership” by admitting to their failures on the condition that they’ll suffer no consequences for them. Accountability’s a smart theme for a populist would-be presidential candidate to take up. And telling a Clinton to her face on TV that she should have been fired for negligence, which is true, is a smart, splashy way to do it. It’s a dual critique, superficially a reprimand to Obama’s secretary of state but more broadly an indictment of how Washington tends to do business. I’ve always assumed there’s no way he’ll leapfrog Rubio and Ryan as a frontrunner among grassroots conservatives in 2016 but it’s getting harder to believe that every day.

And now that he’s demanded accountability from the most popular Democrat pol in America, he must pay:

One other note. This is not an exchange I would have expected Ron Paul to have with Hillary, not because he’s in any way comfortable with unaccountability in Washington but because his priorities lie elsewhere. You can imagine him grilling her about why the CIA is in Libya in the first place and what the root causes of the assault on the consulate might be. Not Rand; his showcase moment here has more to do with protecting Americans who are already in the field. A lot of what he’s up to lately has to do with distinguishing his brand from his father’s, the trip to Israel being the most conspicuous example. This is another.

Why does it matter if the Benghazi killings were the result of a “spontaneous protest” against an anti-Islam video, or a planned AQ terror attack?

It matters because the Obama administration lied to the American public about it for two weeks. Obama clearly thought the reason why four Americans, including an ambassador, were murdered in Benghazi mattered to somebody. It mattered enough for Obama to lie about it — not once, not twice, but repeatedly and for weeks.

Obama lied about Benghazi because he knew that if the American public was told the truth — that the deaths were the result of a planned AQ terror attack for which the Obama administration was completely unprepared — it might hinder Obama’s chances of being re-elected. The truth would contradict Obama’s prior boasts that AQ had been decimated and was no longer a threat, and it would also expose the folly of Obama’s unilateral decision to militarily intervene in Libya to depose Quaddaffi. That’s why it mattered to Obama, and that’s why he lied about it: to protect his re-election.

But I understand Hillary’s frustration. She’s asking why does it matter now? The lie worked, the MSM worked overtime to cover Obama’s azz, and Obama was re-elected.

You said:

“And that [Obama] doesn’t pretend otherwise sets him apart from the fake cowboys that play dress up for the GOP votes.”

He does a pretty fine job of playing a fake cowboy and playing dress up when it suits his purposes.

If you notice, there are VOTERS in some of the pictures. So, yeah, Obama is not above putting on a cowboy hat and eating a hot dog or fried Twinkie if he can get some votes out of the deal. That’s why he went to things like the Iowa State Fair.

Resist We Much on January 23, 2013 at 3:59 PM

Awesome story, but small quibble: was he a deputy U.S. marshal or an the U.S. marshal for the federal district he was in?

“He became a Deputy U.S. Marshal in 1875 at the age of 38, after ‘Hanging Judge’ Isaac C. Parker was made the federal judge of Indian Territory. Under President Ulysses S. Grant, Parker appointed Confederate Army General James Fagan a U.S. Marshal and ordered him to hire 200 deputies.”

There’s a big difference. The U.S. Marshal is mostly a political appointment, while the deputies are the actual law enforcement agents that report to a single Marshal for the federal district.
