Quotes of the day

White House press secretary Jay Carney on Wednesday defended Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s assertion that the administration’s initial claims the Benghazi attack was the result of a violent protest — rather than terrorism — made no “difference” in the big picture of the tragedy.

Carney, speaking to reporters at the White House daily briefing, said Clinton was referring to “an obvious political obsession over a series of talking points that again bears no relevance on the central issues” around the Sept. 11, 2012, attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya.

***

More often, a secretary of state sees the cables that his or her staff pulls out because they are important and should be seen. Figuring out what the incumbent secretary wants to see, will wish to see, and will be angry for not having seen is very difficult when there’s a new secretary — but what is Hillary Clinton’s excuse on September 11, 2012, after almost four years in office? There had been three and half years to set up a system, to let the career officers of the Secretariat and the Operations Center know what she wants, and to have her personal staff figure it out too.

That is to say, if she did not see the Benghazi cables in a timely fashion, if she did not see Chris Stephens’s cables describing the deterioration of security, and if she did not see his requests for more security, this was a huge management failure on her part. It is a poor excuse to say, “Gee, the Department gets lots of cables” — and perhaps even worse then to hide behind an Accountability Review Board that pins responsibility on assistant secretaries and no higher.

***

While Clinton gave, as she has before, lip service to the idea that she took responsibility for the tragedy, throughout her testimony she demonstrated that she regarded the whole idea of accountability as a detail to be shrugged off or pigeonholed along with internal government reports about the matter. Her attitude, when not listening to paeans to her service and frequent trips abroad, seemed to betray her belief that not only were questions about Benghazi unimportant but that she knew the mainstream press would continue to give her a pass for her failures.

The problem here is not just what she considers an irrelevant question from Johnson or a mere “difference of opinion”–as she characterized Senator John McCain’s scathing attack on her record on the issue–but a belief that four dead Americans in Benghazi was really not such an earth-shaking event. Her consistent talking point seemed to be that the committee shouldn’t bother itself trying to find out what happened and why and who was responsible for the mistakes that led to the deaths, but merely to “move on”—to steal a phrase made popular during her husband’s presidency. That’s why she still won’t say who changed the public talking points about Benghazi that led to Rice’s lies and why they were altered.

***

Rohrabacher asked the secretary whether she informed the president first that the attack was the result of protests about an anti-Islamic video, or whether it was a coordinated terrorist attack.

“We all remember what the emphasis was,” he said. “Over and over it was repeated that we had enraged the Islamic terrorists [...] which by the way, what does that do? [...] That means we’re at fault…”

Rohrabacher continued, saying, “The only people I know who are in jail right now is the filmmaker. Isn’t that disconcerting?”

***

“I’m not sure she had rehearsed for that type of question,” Johnson told BuzzFeed Wednesday afternoon, after the Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing. “I think she just decided before she was going to describe emotionally the four dead Americans, the heroes, and use that as her trump card to get out of the questions. It was a good way of getting out of really having to respond to me.”

He said it was clear, at other points during the hearing, that Clinton was working off a set of talking points, but that his questions “got under her skin” because “they’re just so common sense.”

“I just don’t think she had an answer to that,” he said. “Maybe it embarrassed her. Maybe she hadn’t thought of it that way.”

***

It was riveting television, but her statement was utter nonsense. First, invoking the slain American diplomats to defend herself from a tough question was distasteful in the extreme. It is because their lives were so valued and their death so jolting that the hearing was even happening. Second, the false choice between a protest and an evening stroll gone awry was patently ridiculous. The relevant questions included whether the attack was a spontaneous protest (one form of threat), a pre-planned terrorist attack (another level of threat entirely), or an opportunistic combination of the two. Because the administration misled the American people, it helped perpetuate a false sense of security about our terrorist enemies — that they were virtually defeated. Finally, “what difference at this point does it make?” Well, it makes all the difference in the world when trying to determine terrorists’ intentions and capabilities in North Africa.

Watching the exchange, I was reminded a bit of the Biden/Ryan debate, when smirks and laughs successfully substituted for argument. Of course, no one is laughing or smirking here, but once again attitude trumps substance. Nonsense delivered with anger and conviction is still nonsense.

***

Yet today’s testimony in some sense does not matter, given that Ms. Clinton is probably going to run in 2016 for president, and has enjoyed a protective media veneer over her long career — shed only once in 2008 when opposing Barack Obama.

Although she has shown moments of teary emotion (cf. the 2008 campaign), had problems with recollections about past events (cf. under fire in Bosnia), and offered scenarios that seemed improbable (cf. subpoenaed documents mysteriously appearing belatedly in a White House anteroom), her testimony today will be seen, as the Washington Post described it, as “an uncharacteristic display of emotion for Clinton, who is usually collected and reserved in public.” Despite Hillarycare, Whitewater, Travelgate, Filegate, the cattle-futures mess, the circumstances surrounding the 2000 Clinton pardons, “suspension of disbelief,” etc., Ms. Clinton, for not fully explained reasons, remains mostly beyond audit and censure, a fact she has come to appreciate.

“Madame Secretary, you let the consulate become a death trap. That’s national security malpractice,” said Duncan.

“You’ve said you take responsibility, what does responsibility mean, Madame Secretary? You’re still in your job, and there are four people at the Department of State that have culpability in this that are still in their jobs. I heard the answer about firing or removing personnel, I get that, but this was gross negligence. At what point in time can our government fire someone whose gross negligence left four Americans dead in Benghazi?”

Hello bazil9. How are you?

I watched the complete proceedings. The Dumbocrats who “questioned” Shrillary wasted everyone’s time – all they did was praise her. As Michael Moyhnihan said on Red Eye tonight, it was like watching the North Korean politburo praising Dear Leader over his choice of shoes.

On the GOP side: of the Senators, Johnson is the only one I thought had the right approach – he made Shrillary look really stupid. Of the House members, I liked Rohrbacher, Duncan, and a few others as they aggressively went after her.

The problem I had with the GOPers is that I found them to be ill-prepared overall – they didn’t have all of their “facts” straight, and they didn’t coordinate very well. I don’t understand why they didn’t take more preparatory time working out a collective plan of attack.

N. Korea: Rocket launches, nuclear tests will ‘target’ US
Reuters
********

SEOUL – North Korea said on Thursday it would carry out further rocket launches and a nuclear test that would target the United States, dramatically stepping up its threats against a country it called its “enemy”.

The announcement by the country’s top military body came a day after the United Nations Security Council agreed a U.S.-backed resolution to censure and sanction the country for a rocket launch in December that breached U.N. rules.

“We are not disguising the fact that the various satellites and long-range rockets that we will fire and the high-level nuclear test we will carry out are targeted at the United States,” North Korea’s National Defense Commission said, according to state news agency KCNA.

North Korea is believed by South Korea and other observers to be “technically ready” for a third nuclear test, and the decision to go ahead rests with leader Kim Jong-un who pressed ahead with the December rocket launch in defiance of the U.N. sanctions.

“Whether North Korea tests or not is up to North Korea,” Glyn Davies, the top U.S. envoy for North Korean diplomacy, said in the South Korean capital of Seoul as KCNA released its statement.

“We hope they don’t do it. We call on them not to do it,” Davies said. “This is not a moment to increase tensions on the Korean peninsula.”

The North was banned from developing missile and nuclear technology under sanctions dating from its 2006 and 2009 nuclear tests.

The concern now is that Pyongyang, whose only major diplomatic ally, China, endorsed the latest U.N. resolution, could undertake a third nuclear test using highly enriched uranium for the first time, opening a second path to a bomb.

Its previous tests have been viewed as limited successes and used plutonium, of which the North has limited stocks.

North Korea gave no time-frame for the coming test and often employs harsh rhetoric in response to U.N. and U.S. actions.

Its long-range rockets are not seen as capable of reaching the United States mainland and it is not believed to have the technology to mount a nuclear warhead on a long-range missile.

“The UNSC (Security Council) resolution masterminded by the U.S. has brought its hostile policy towards the Democratic Peoples Republic of Korea (North Korea) to its most dangerous stage,” the commission was quoted as saying.

The GOPers could really have more obviously nailed her yesterday if they had used their 5-minute allotments in a collective effort. For example: she should not have been allowed to get off the hook for saying that we still don’t know if the attack was spontaneous or not. Disappointing.

There were some good interrogators in the House, too. The problem, at least partially, was with that 5-minute limit – no matter how much she was getting faced by someone, the next GOPer didn’t pick up where the last one left off, and thus no momentum was ever created.

The GOP’s leadership just sucks.

2/23/2013 Will Be A Day of Resistance
http://www.rightwingnews.com/special/2232013-will-be-a-day-of-resistance/

“The force of public opinion cannot be resisted when permitted freely to be expressed. The agitation it produces must be submitted to.” — Thomas Jefferson

Instead, what if the same grassroots conservatives who propelled the Republican Party to its best election cycle in 50 years back in 2010 are still there? In fact, what if there are more conservatives and even Democrats, who aren’t willing to give up their Second Amendment Rights just because Barack Obama has decided it’s fine to exploit the tragic deaths of children at Sandy Hook to further his liberal agenda?

While Barack Obama is calling for Americans to give up their freedom, their rights, and their guns, we’re calling for Americans to resist. We’re calling on Tea Partiers, moderate Republicans, Libertarians and even moderate Democrats to stand up one month from today, on the 23rd of February and say, “No more!”

Right Wing News is joining Dustin Stockton, Western Representation PAC and The Tea Party.net in calling for rallies all across the nation next month on the 23rd. It’ll be a Day of Resistance where gun owners and patriots can peacefully gather and show Barack Obama, the media, and the knockkneed Republicans in Congress that we may have lost a battle last November, but we haven’t lost the war. Don’t meekly give up your 2nd Amendment rights when you can stand with us and RESIST!

The Hillary kabuki went as I thought it would. Paul scrored a few points for his proposed ’16 run. He dotted some i’s and crossed some t’s with the GOP base, retained the following of the Paulians, and this would be good to use against Hillary in ’16 if she remains her partys nominee (which I sincerely doubt), and Paul gets the GOP nod (again, very doubtful). Now onto Reid and the filibuster deal. It’ll be in play today. Thats vitally important.

Boehner blasts Hillary Clinton for blaming Congress on Libya security [VIDEO]
4:04 PM 01/23/2013
*******************

On Wednesday’s broadcast of Laura Ingraham’s radio program, Speaker of the House John Boehner repudiated Hillary Clinton’s efforts during testimony on Wednesday to blame Congress for the Benghazi fiasco.

“We gave them all the money they asked for to make sure that our diplomats and our employees around the world were safe.” Boehner said. “It’s clear that her own people in Libya asked for additional security, and it’s also clear their request was rejected, and I think the secretary needs to explain why. In all, it’s all part of our bigger concern that this is their ‘lead from behind’ strategy. We’ve only seen passive responses to the rise of extremism and terrorist networks in places like Egypt or Tunisia or Libya and now Algeria. America has to lead in the effort to combat violent extremism and terrorism wherever it appears. And yet this White House seems content to watch passively and respond only if necessary.”

Boehner said the House would continue its oversight role by investigating the attack.(More…)

KJ, agree with your take..
You raise a good point about rape..
how many women will be instead of killed-captured then tortured and raped before a violent death?
The muzzies are salivating at the thought right now.

Lets try this again. @bazil9 and canopfor Most Americans have no idea how barbaric and virulent the muzzies really are. Our (western civilization) concepts of logic is bs when it comes to the muzzies. I was raised among them. I know their innermost hopes and desires for their faith. For a while, I struggled to hold on to my own faith (Christianity) while growing up with the loonies. In all honesty and sincerety, I can tell you that the muzzies make the bats*it crazy nazis look like choirboys. The extent of their barbarism and savagery is incomprehensible to the western mindset.

This is one of the best, most cogent analyses of the O administration attitude and why neither McCain nor Romney would have been better.

There was someone who attempted to get Clinton to commit to a timeline of when she became aware of the attack on the consulate, (and if she was watching the attack in real-time, which she said no, she never was watching anything “live”). There’s still a ton of unanswered questions as to why there was no reinforcements sent, and who was commanded to stand down—during an 8-hour attack. We all know why Obama sent Rice onto the Sunday shows, but Clinton said numerous times yesterday how volatile the North African region is, and the real growth of terrorism in the area. I do believe in the end, Obama’s “leading from behind” will be recorded as a huge mistake, while the administration covertly armed “resistance factions”, (which included Christopher Stevens primary job), only to have these munitions fall into the enemies hands. The whole fiasco has made Iran-Contra look like a weekend gun show compared to his “dealings”, yet the media may never report the truth about his failed foreign policy decisions.

Hillary, (numerous times yesterday), kept using her one “bright spot” of her “diplomacy skills”, when she says she convinced the government forces of Tunisia to come to our embassy’s aid—BIG FRIKKIN DEAL—yet, again the “big story” seems to be getting lost in all of this, which is the request for more bodies, (security) to be assigned to the Benghazi embassy—communications/memos that went directly to the State Dept, addressed directly to Hillary Clinton, and yet she never saw or heard of ONE REQUEST, and none of her subordinates felt it was prudent to pass this kind of critical information onto their “captain” during the biggest rise of demonstrations/real attacks that were leading up to 9/11. Further, it was noted in her testimony that these “responsible subordinates” are today on paid administrative leave, and will, (most likely) never lose their jobs. Bottom line, as is the custom of this administration, deadly mistakes were made, yet no one will be ultimately held responsible. Certainly not Hillary Clinton.

You are correct, but I ‘tune’ in to the Religon of Peace and keep up with their brutality…

I have seen some horrific stuff…

I watched it even tho it turned my stomach, just to try and understand them (muzzies) I never will.

They are blood thirsty barbarians… they ARE the devils spawn.

Thanks for the link to Drudge. While there, another link took me to Feinstein Opens Gun Control Presser with Prayer by Clergyman

I read this Clergy’s statement: said Thursday morning that “people of faith” should come together to fight for gun control against the “gun lobby.” Then said this: “But I believe the gun lobby is no match for the cross lobby.” A video is at the website.

So he wants the people of faith to pray against the “gun lobby”, i.e. NRA, etc.

So “people of faith” should pray and fight other Americans. Do I have that right?

I think this Clergy needs to spend more time reading the Scriptures so he would know 1. How to pray 2. What God thinks 3.
What prayers and under what conditions God answers prayer.

Feinstein would do well to understand having “Clergy” there doesn’t help her evil, no matter what he says.
