Missing from Obama’s great liberal address: jobs

posted at 8:31 am on January 22, 2013 by Ed Morrissey

Not entirely missing, of course, but close to it.  Barack Obama only mentioned the word “job” three times in a speech of over 2100 words, and in none of these cases talked specifically about growing jobs for the 8 million more Americans without one since he became President. Here are the three references to jobs in the second inaugural speech:

No single person can train all the math and science teachers we’ll need to equip our children for the future, or build the roads and networks and research labs that will bring new jobs and businesses to our shores. …

We recognize that no matter how responsibly we live our lives, any one of us at any time may face a job loss, or a sudden illness, or a home swept away in a terrible storm. …

We cannot cede to other nations the technology that will power new jobs and new industries, we must claim its promise.

In the first two, Obama used jobs as a motif for collective action, and in the third, as a side effect of his intent to continue spending on the green-tech industry, which has resulted in such great job-creating efforts as Solyndra and A123, among many other expensive flops.  It’s as if the nominal unemployment rate of 7.8% and the lowest civilian workforce ratios in over 30 years aren’t a significant social and economic problem any longer, but just a canvas on which Obama can paint his liberal agenda on every other issue.  The omission is stunning, especially in a speech that had practically every liberal chanting point included.

Byron York agrees:

There were plenty of messages in Obama’s speech. He will push for immigration reform. He will push for gay rights. (Obama used the words “equal” or “equality” seven times in his speech, versus just once in his first inaugural address.) He will push on global warming. And he will keep pouring billions of taxpayer dollars into “green energy” projects that have so far yielded little energy and fewer jobs.

But the economy? Other than declaring, “An economic recovery has begun,” Obama had nearly nothing to say.

That should not be a surprise. Since last November’s election, the president’s supporters, in political office and in the press, have spent a lot of time talking about his second-term agenda. The economy somehow never tops their lists. Obama himself, when asked to name his top priorities on “Meet the Press” recently, put immigration reform at the head of the list.

In Obama’s first term, of course, with unemployment high and economic anxiety even higher, he chose to pursue national health care above all, promising repeatedly to make a “pivot” to the economy at some point in the future. That didn’t really happen until the 2012 campaign. Now, safely re-elected, Obama has put the jobs issue back on the back burner.

In 2010, Republicans made huge strides, won a lot of seats in Congress, by asking, “Where are the jobs, Mr. President?” That’s still the fundamental question today, if someone cares to ask it.

They certainly weren’t in Mr. President’s speech.

We don’t have the economy to support liberal “priorities.” But 0bama doesn’t dare mention that. Does he think he can push off the economic reckoning until some time when he is out of office?

Maybe so. The Democrats haven’t had the spanking establishment Republicans have on Myturn-Dammitosis. And the likeliest to assert their right to the Dem nomination in 2016 are melanin-challenged. nIf 0bama is succeeded by a Republican, maybe 0bama thinks he can push the trouble off on him/her

Who needs a job in Obamanation?

Just grab your Obamaphone, jump in your taxpayer-subsidized “green” car, take your food stamps to the store and buy whatever your little “progressive” heart desires. It’s free, swipe it on your EBT!

Everybody has a right to a _____________________ (fill in whatever you like). And the government has an obligation to pay for it. And it will, as long as the Fed has paper and green ink, or at least until the rest of the world catches on and dumps the dollar as reserve currency, and then . . . .

Why worry about jobs when there is a country to collectivize? This is all about minimizing and eliminating the individual while growing the power of the state. Does anyone really think he actually cares about illegal aliens or gay rights? Amnesty for illegals is just a way of adding to democrat voter rolls and gay marriage is about tearing down the fabric of society in order to advance the cause of a stronger federal government. Same with the so called green energy development. He could care less whether one watt of energy was ever produced from those ventures, they get campaign money into the hands of his cronies, focus the people on elusive “free” energy while their real energy rates skyrocket and again advance the federal government as the source of innovation. His goal is to get everyone to lookmtomthe federal government as the source and provider of all needs.

Will he ever meet with the Jobs Council? He didn’t say much about working with Congress about anything either. I think he believes he can skate through the next 4 years without doing anything but making sure the left gets its agenda shoved down our throats.

There was a time (before civil rights legislation) that the black youth unemployment in America was equal to, or in some cases, lower than that of white youth. It was 9% in 1948.

After 40 years of The War On Poverty and other Progressive social experimentation black youth unemployment stands at around 40% or higher.

Judging by their actions the Left and the modern Democrat party do not care about African-American youth. Please see: South Side Chicago, the hometown of the President and a literal war zone.

scalleywag on January 22, 2013 at 9:28 AM

From merriam-webster.com

collectivismnoun (Concise Encyclopedia)
Any of several types of social organization that ascribe central importance to the groups to which individuals belong (e.g., state, nation, ethnic group, or social class). It may be contrasted with individualism. Jean-Jacques Rousseau was the first modern philosopher to discuss it (1762). Karl Marx was its most forceful proponent in the 19th century. Communism, fascism, and socialism may all be termed collectivist systems. See also communitarianism; kibbutz; moshav.

Ah, for the good old days, when liberals actually cared about unemployment.

It’s pretty obvious that the Obama Coalition is people who either already have a job or don’t want one. None of them have a clue about how jobs actually get created – or destroyed, for that matter. They want a Mommy State to nurture and take care of them.

the 8 million more Americans without one since he became President

It’s worse than that.

Republicans held majority control of Washington, D.C. (holding 2+ out of 3 of the House, Senate, and Presidency) from Jan 1995 to Dec 2006. Democrats have held majority control from Jan 2007 to present. If we had the same % employment now that we had 6 years ago, over 11.7 Million more people would be employed right now.

Employment-Population Ratio after 12 straight years (144 consecutive months) of Republican majority control (in December 2006): 63.4%

Employment-Population Ratio after 6 straight years (72 consecutive months) of Democrat majority control (in December 2012): 58.6%

Difference: 4.8% of population (civilian noninstitutional population age 16+)

According to BLS HOUSEHOLD DATA HISTORICAL Table A-1, our current civilian noninstitutional population 16 years and over is 244,350,000.

4.8% of that represents 11,728,800 missing jobs.

After six straight years of Democrat majorities, there has been no recovery.

If we currently enjoyed the same level of employment that we enjoyed for 12 straight years of Republican majority control, over 11.7 Million more people would be employed than are employed right now after 6 straight years of Democrat majority control.

That’s a fact.
