Video: Obama promises to do something about climate change

posted at 3:51 pm on January 21, 2013 by Allahpundit

I thought the centerpiece of today’s speech would be amnesty, just because it’s the only liberal wishlist item on which he’s likely to achieve big things in his second term. Push immigration front and center today and then he could point back to it later for “legacy” enhancement, as proof that he kept his key inaugural promise. Instead, this. I guess it makes sense: Today was a day to make liberals feel good and one way to do that reliably is to talk about the fierce of urgency of now soon-ish on climate change. Per the NYT, soon-ish in this case means ignoring the democratic process in Congress and taking executive action, with new EPA regulations to cap emissions by coal-burning plants — and many, many lawsuits — to follow. In fairness to O, that’s smart from a legacy perspective too. There’s nothing committed partisans like more than to see a president on their side strong-arm their agenda into law, whether through or around the legislature, especially on an issue they consider of paramount, nation-threatening importance. This’ll earn him Great Man of History points with the liberal historians who’ll write his hagiographies in the future.

For the less liberal historians, the picture’s likely to look … more nuanced:

[W]hen Obama first took the oath of office, the nation’s total outstanding debt was $10.6 trillion. When he was sworn in Monday, it stood at $16.4 trillion – and the Congressional Budget Office sees additional deficits ranging from $6.9 trillion to $9.2 trillion over the next decade, depending on the baseline used. Obama didn’t come close to meeting his pledge to cut annual deficits in half by the end of his first term and still hasn’t offered a plan to reform the nation’s broken entitlement system. He has talked of making “modest adjustments” to entitlement programs while raising taxes only on the very rich, when any serious budget analysis shows that getting the debt under control will require either massive cuts to entitlement spending, huge tax increases on the middle class, or some combination of both.

This brings us to the two lines in Monday’s speech. He declared that, “We must make the hard choices to reduce the cost of health care and the size of our deficit.” This is Barack Obama, bold leader speaking (with an extra twist of irony given that the signature legislative accomplishment of his first term was supposedly aimed at containing the growth of health care costs). Then, he said, “But we reject the belief that America must choose between caring for the generation that built this country and investing in the generation that will build its future.” Translation: he isn’t going to do anything to seriously reform Social Security, Medicare or Medicaid, and wants more economic stimulus spending, too. So, within a breath of calling for hard choices, he rejected the need for them. I can think of no more fitting summation of Obama’s presidency.

Me neither. Some presidents fail to achieve “greatness” not necessarily because they don’t have it in them but because they never face the sort of momentous crisis that offers an opportunity to demonstrate it. I recall reading somewhere that Bill Clinton once complained of that. The Cold War was over by the time he was sworn in and the war on terror was still years away (thanks in part to American inaction during Clinton’s presidency), so he’s remembered less for any “great” accomplishment than for momentarily reorienting Democrats away from Great Society statism. The twisted irony of Obama’s presidency, particularly in light of his emulation of Lincoln and Reagan, is that, like them, he does face a momentous crisis that requires leadership commensurate to the moment. He just doesn’t have it in him to lead on it, or maybe he’s too busy with other priorities. An economic rebound in his second term will delay the reckoning with entitlements for a few years longer so his legacy is probably safe in the near term, but if he doesn’t do something wildly unexpected in the next four years to deal seriously with mandatory spending, then his place in history is secure. He’s the guy who expanded health-care entitlements at a moment when Medicare spending was starting to go haywire, the guy who doubled down on the welfare state as the bill was coming due, the guy whose second-term agenda was even more aggressively liberal than his first despite trillions more in debt over four years. You wanted him, America, you got him. Good luck.

Remote Alaskan volcano continues to erupt, spewing lava and ash – @AP

Alaska volcano continues to erupt, with lava, ash
May. 16 11:22 PM EDT
********************

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) — A remote Alaska volcano continues to erupt, spewing lava and ash clouds.

The Alaska Volcano Observatory said Thursday a continuous cloud of ash, steam and gas from Pavlof Volcano has been seen 20,000 feet above sea level. The cloud was moving to the southeast Thursday.

John Power, the U.S. Geological Survey scientist in charge at the observatory, estimates the lava fountain rose several hundred feet into the air.

Onsite seismic instruments are picking up constant tremors from the eruption at Pavlof, located about 625 miles southwest of Anchorage.

Residents of Cold Bay, 37 miles away, have reported seeing a glow from the summit.

Pavlof is among the most active volcanoes in the Aleutian arc, with nearly 40 known eruptions, according to the observatory.

Regarding Obama’s AP/whistleblower intimidation gate: although the AP has been no ally of the cause of freedom and liberty over the years, it was still a very serious anti-American offense committed against the AP and I stand with them and other media organizations whose rights were also probably violated. I only wish that the MSM would reciprocate and help me defeat the IRS and replace it with a national sales tax that would still fund the government while striking an important blow against tyranny, but I doubt they will. Still I support the 1st amendment and it’s an important story, which I trust they will pursue. If the MSM wants to lead the charge to impeach Obama, I’ll tag along in support, but meanwhile I’ll be working to abolish the IRS/Obamacare gestapo and promote a renewal of freedom and liberty in America that I believe will be a boon to our prosperity and our survival as a nation. I think repealing the 16th amendment should be front and center in ’14 and ’16 election.

Now is the time, let’s do it!

The current lot should not make the same mistake. Democratic scandal does not take the place of a Republican agenda.

Since the GOP agenda seems to be colluding with Barky and the dems on destroying our borders and legalize every third world dirtbag who illegally makes it onto our territory I don’t the ink the GOP should count on anything. I won’t vote for any of them.

I want a national divorce. The left and the Vichy Right can stay in the American Socialist Superstate and live in the hell they are crafting. I want nothing to do with any of them – nothing but see them paraded in orange jumpsuits on their way to 30 years of very hard labor, that is. But, as that won’t happen, I just want to be rid of all of them and free to re-create the America that I was born into and that is owed me by the Constitution, not the A.S.S. that the Indonesian Sukarno knock-off and his treasonous enablers have forced on us.

The GOP wasn’t satisfied that they survived the 2006-2008 shamnesty treason. They thought they had definitely killed themselves. Now, mad that the Tea Party has brought the GOP back to life it has immediately set about on its return to national suicide. This time, they are getting it. The GOP should go on the ash heap of history quickly. And the dems can all go straight to fvcking hell, where they belong.

Stockman asks for probe of alleged audits of citizens reported to White House email address

May 14, 2013 Press Release

ObamaCare critics report IRS harassment after being reported to Flag@WhiteHouse.gov

WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Stockman Tuesday asked two House chairmen to investigate allegations individuals reported to a White House email address for criticizing Obama’s health care reforms were targeted with Internal Revenue Service audits.

During the debate over adopting ObamaCare the White House encouraged liberal activists to report Obama’s critics to a “Flag@WhiteHouse.gov” email address. At least one of those reported tells RedState.com editor Erick Erickson he was then targeted with audits. “Remember that website Obama set up to report neighbors who opposed Obamacare? A friend reported himself and got audited shortly thereafter,” Erickson tweeted May 13.

“We need to know if there were any others. This certainly fits the rapidly-expanding pattern of people who criticize Obama suddenly finding themselves targeted by the IRS,” said Stockman. “Obama’s IRS scandal is spreading like a cancer.”

“Government reforms adopted after Watergate prohibit the White House from coordinating with the IRS to target citizens. We know White House critics were targeted by the IRS. We know the White House maintained an active enemies list through Flag@WhiteHouse.gov. Investigators must find out how targets were picked and what, if any, White House personnel knew about it,” said Stockman.

Stockman has asked the House Ways and Means, and Government Reform and Oversight, Committees to seek answers to three questions:

1) Were any individuals or groups reported to Flag@WhiteHouse.gov later subjected to IRS audits?

2) If so, were the audits politically motivated?

3) If the audits were politically motivated, did the White House violate federal laws prohibiting such coordination?

“Obama’s Nixonian demand that his followers provide him with an enemies list is even more disturbing in light of the IRS’ admitted wrongdoing,” said Stockman

US lawmakers urge Defense Secretary Hagel to ensure Air Force buy cancelled Northrop drone – @Reuters

WASHINGTON | Thu May 16, 2013 11:18pm EDT
*****************************************

Representatives Buck McKeon, the Republican who heads the House Armed Services Committee, and Jim Moran, a Democrat from Northrop’s home district in Virginia, sent Hagel a strongly worded letter in which they accused the Air Force of ignoring congressional mandates by failing to procure the spy drones.

A copy of the letter, which was dated May 13, was obtained by Reuters late on Thursday.

The Air Force had proposed mothballing the Global Hawk Block 30 program in its fiscal 2013 budget request, arguing that it would be less expensive to keep flying manned U-2 spy planes given pressure to reduce funding.

He said it would absolutely clear up that this was indeed was an attack and not an out-of-control protest. In fact, he said as soon as Susan Rice came out and blamed the protest, he knew they were lying about what they saw. He said it was way to complex to be anything other than a terrorist attack on the consulate.

too funny. All day I was wondering “did I change the view tab”?

arnold ziffel on May 17, 2013 at 12:08 AM

I know, right? Subtle changes without warning can be jarring when one is used to seeing things a certain way for so long.

Remember, for Hussein , Marine Corpsemen are those bandmen who play ” jail to the thief” when he walks with his nose in the sky .

As if that wasn’t enough , he decided to humiliate them in front of his jihady buddy today .

He has that islamic feudalist tendencies and make no mistake,
today Hussein’s status rose a few more notches in the eyes of Turkish Cardigan

If you didn’t ask her, I’m sorry that you didn’t. It’s a very romantic tune with a bitter-sweet edge. It reveals a side to your nature that she may have found intriguing and genuine.

For a return trip, this is one of my three favorite love songs. It’s the oldest, so it comes first.

“I Need You”, by America.

thatsafactjack on May 17, 2013 at 12:13 AM

Paladin was a character category in Dungeons and Dragons.
My college roommate was into it heavy
Why I asked.

bazil9 on May 17, 2013 at 12:10 AM

Yep. I got all the way through the dungeon layers and found some flan and a bunch of hotties. While I rescued the flan the dragon ate the hotties.

Be a lot more fun to ram his head firmly up his back porch and roll him down the street toward oncoming traffic.

But that’s just me being soft again…

I hear you. I just want to constantly remind everyone of HAL’s fascist tendencies though because he can no longer be taken seriously when discussing anything as a result. A man who wants to kill us all is not someone to be reasoned with.

I was a geek, and she was beautiful. And the other kids would have damned sure they ruined it.

She’s married now, and we have contact. It’s a nice friendship we have.

Were there unions in 1938 germany?

wolly4321 on May 17, 2013 at 12:06 AM

Were there unions in the Soviet Union? Could workers strike? Could they ‘collectively bargain’?

Sure, there were some party-approved ‘unions’ but they weren’t unions in the way we would define them.

The more appropriate question is:

Were there goon squads in Germany in 1938?

Yes…and they were wearing black shirts by then.

There were goon squads in the US under Wilson (American Protective League) and a little less obvious during FDR (NRA’s Blue Eagle enforcers).
