Video: Failed assassination attempt in Bulgaria

posted at 8:31 am on January 21, 2013 by Ed Morrissey

Lots of buzz about this video last night, but I didn’t actually see it until today — and it’s definitely noteworthy, if a bit puzzling.  The gun misfired, but it was a gas pistol, used to fire teargas cartridges only; it’s a non-lethal weapon in most applications, although at the range the assassin had, it likely would have killed Ahmed Dogan. The would-be Czolgolsz also had knives on him, not that it did much good, as the crowd began beating him once he was subdued. For a man with drug and robbery convictions, the perp didn’t seem very professional, but maybe that’s why he has convictions, too.

The odd choice of weapon had some speculating that the entire thing was a stunt:

Some politicians and analysts being interviewed by local media in Bulgaria have speculated that the attack was not an assassination attempt and may even have been staged.

Well, that should be a fun story to follow in eastern Europe over the next couple of weeks. In the meantime, we can watch the video and marvel that the gun didn’t fire, and wonder what was going through the politician’s mind when all he heard was the click.

If it wasn’t a stunt then I don’t care what type of gun it was, as far as I’m concerned if a dude walks up and suddenly points it in your face it’s a .44 Magnum.

Yeah, I’m not checking to see if I like the caliber, either.

Watch the guy coming in from the far right of the picture. BAM! Moves the perp away from the podium and down to the ground.

According to school officials, if somebody points their finger at you, you have the right to lethal response.

If the guy hasn’t soiled his pants when the click sounded, he deserves to run his country. Heck, he deserves to run this country, too.

Archivarix on January 21, 2013 at 8:48 AM

a stunt?…..duh, if you look closely you can see Amelia Earhart very faintly in the background. And to add to the mystery….

Dogan is believed to have been with Marilyn Monroe the night that J.Edgar Hoover ordered her to be “dealt with”.

…..and Yahoo News has had a commenter that’s mentioned Dorgan has had an online relationship with a certain girl that died of leukemia and then survived an relationship with a college football player.

TMZ will have the latest this afternoon.

The “gas pistol” bit is new info to me. It certainly seems to be something less than a serious attempt to kill Dogan.

And, canopfor, we know it was a gun-free zone, or they wouldn’t have been giving him a beat-down, but covering him with a sheet. (And, the paramedics would have been complaining about how heavy he was when they loaded him on the gurney.)

I agree. If homeboy had taken one to his mug at 10inches away…. it would’ve been worse than Ralphies Red Ryder incident.

probably a pellet or a very small round…can’t be much of anything. However, the pellets of CS that the USMC uses in the CS training chambers are very small, so a pint-sized CS pellet in a room w/ 20 people can render the entire room in bad shape.

ted c on January 21, 2013 at 9:06 AM

If the politician was from the left, it could have been staged.

Watching the video the one thing that I thought was funny… you can hear the footsteps of the man running up the stairs…. why does the speaker not even turn to look. they had to have been easily heard.

Wiki says the speaker was a communist police collaborator during the cold war.

You can’t make this stuff up. Leftists are all the same all over the world. He doesn’t show up much for votes. He bussed illegals in to vote for him. He wrote publication with the titles “New World Order” in them. (Where have we heard that before?) And he was doing a sorta Fast and Furious… he started a fake radical party in another country to stir up fear and increase his own power at home.
From Novinite.com:

He has several publications – “The Liberal Democratic Coalition Has to Be confirmed”, 1998; “The Minorities and the New World Order”, 2000; “Bulgaria and the New World Order”, 2001; “Identity and Integration”, 2001; “Levski and the Time”, 2001.

Over the last decade, Ahmed Dogan and his party DPS have become notorious for using “elections tourism”, i.e. bringing Bulgarian expats from Turkish origin back from Turkey with special buses in order to have them vote in the Bulgarian elections.

In 2005, the far-right and extreme nationalist Ataka party was set up largely feeding upon fears and rumors among the Bulgarian Society that the DPS was an instrument of Turkey’s penetration and influence in Bulgaria.

A report in the 168 Hours Weekly in 2007 claimed that the DPS had funded the far-right Ataka party with BGN 1,6 M in order to use the rise of far-right nationalism in Bulgaria in order to rally its supporters.

Dogan has been notorious for hardly ever showing up to Parliamentary sessions. He has stated he used his time for more productive activities. Because of his absences, he has often been deprived of his MP salary.

They suspect a guy who became president in Taiwan several years ago staged an assassination attempt as well; seems to be a trend for politicians lagging in the polls.

As long as this didn’t happen in Bosnia Herzegovina. Assassinations there always get blown out of proportion.

It is said the politician was down in popularity and this might give him the support he needs. He is leader of a Muslim party seeking supremacy for Muslims in Bulgaria. Pity about the misfire if it was real.

No. Only government employees have the absolute and unquestionable right to use force in response to even the most inconsequential comments, from the most obviously innocent and harmless civilians. Rightly or wrongly, liberals believe that the rest of us have no rights whatsoever.

gas pistol, used to fire teargas cartridges only

Uh, no it isn’t. A “gas pistol” is a BB gun – it has nothing to do with tear gas.

Chriscom on January 21, 2013 at 9:04 AM

No. “GAS” refers to a Co2 Cartridge used to shoot a BB, pellet or air-soft type ammo.

Pork-Chop on January 21, 2013 at 10:07 AM

When I first saw this I thought it looked like a Baby Browning or knock-off and I could understand the miss-fire or jam if it was a BB knock-off. I have a knock-off from Bauer firearms. It’s a pretty little 25 cal stainless with pearl grips job. It also mis-fires or jams quite frequently and I don’t believe I’ve ever managed to fire all 5 rounds without a jam or misfire happening. I would never depend on it for defense which I believe was its intended purpose.

The security team tackling this guy, seems like not a one under 50 y.o. and then they let him lay there at times unsecured or even handcuffed. Crack professionals of the Bulgarian securitat.

jake49 on January 21, 2013 at 11:45 AM

Who on EARTH are the security people? Or whomever, there? They’re utterly incompetent at restraining the guy. Either that, or, yeah, it was a bizarre stunt. It certainly looks more calculated for sensationalism than a reaction by professionals.

If this had just been a RAP VIDEO BY JAY-Z there wouldn’t have been a beatdown after…..there would have been a Grammy awarded.

PappyD61 on January 21, 2013 at 1:14 PM

It was pretty cool how that old guy tried to deck the assassin as soon as the gun misfired.

NealK on January 21, 2013 at 2:52 PM

Got a few thoughts on this.

1) Wasn’t Brandon Lee killed by a gun that was loaded with blanks? I think that any projectile fired from a gun at close enough range could easily be lethal.

2) It could be possible that the would be assassin was just too stupid to realize what kind of gun it was. It would not be the first or last in the annals of stupid criminals if that was the case.

3) The leader’s security detail should be immediately fired. The bad guy had all day to run up on the stage in clear view of everyone with noone posted at the bottom of the stairs to block access. If it was a hoax, I might be convinced of it by the God-awful security at this event.
