Bill Clinton to liberal donors: Don’t condescend to gun owners

posted at 6:50 pm on January 21, 2013 by Allahpundit

Excellent advice but surely a total buzzkill for leftists, for whom the big gun-control push is at least as much a cultural struggle as it is a serious attempt to reduce mass shootings. Tightening the laws on background checks and banning high-capacity magazines might not stop future Sandy Hooks or Columbines but it will potentially force the yokels to behave in a bit more civilized fashion. Like they do in, say, Chicago.

Next he’ll be telling them not to use kids as props for their big gun-grab rituals. I thought this guy was supposed to be fun.

“Do not patronize the passionate supporters of your opponents by looking down your nose at them,” Clinton said.

“A lot of these people live in a world very different from the world lived in by the people proposing these things,” Clinton said. “I know because I come from this world.”…

“A lot of these people … all they’ve got is their hunting and their fishing,” he told the Democratic financiers. “Or they’re living in a place where they don’t have much police presence. Or they’ve been listening to this stuff for so long that they believe it all.”

Clinton closed his remarks with a warning to big Democratic donors that ultimately many Democratic lawmakers will be defeated if they choose to stand with the president.

“Do not be self-congratulatory about how brave you [are] for being for this” gun control push, he said. “The only brave people are the people who are going to lose their jobs if they vote with you.”

The hunting/fishing line is a nice example of the difference between Clinton and Obama. When The One gets behind closed doors with like-minded ideologues, he’ll happily patronize rural culture by giving you his pet theory on why the bitter-clingers cling to their guns and Bibles so bitterly. Clinton won’t give you “why.” He’ll imply it (“all they’ve got”) but that extra bit of condescension, where hunting and religion and opposition to amnesty are supposedly all a byproduct of economic frustration, just isn’t there. You already know this if you watched the Democratic convention last year, but Clinton’s far the superior retail politician.

More good advice from the Big Dog about not overreaching on guns: “All these polls that you see saying the public is for us on all these issues — they are meaningless if they’re not voting issues.” I.e. it’s quite possible there’s a reckoning coming for Democrats in the midterms if anything major happens in Congress. Via Mediaite, here’s Shep Smith not caring much about that at all.

Pretty close to being 100% correct.

Conservatives work at politics as if it’s an intellectual exercise in logic – right vs wrong – etc. —– while the left has no belief systems and has simply learned to play politics.

The electorate today is 50%(+) idiots – they don’t reason – they don’t think – they simply react – and that’s why we lose.

barry has guns though, and uses them regularly. Let me know when the Left and little Shep get agitated about this

Targeted killing has been a particularly pronounced facet of US strategy in Pakistan. The UK-based Bureau of Investigative Journalism estimates that there have been 362 drone strikes in the country since 2004 – 310 of them launched on Obama’s watch. The strikes have killed up to 3,461 people, 891 of them civilians.

Honestly, i think it is very weird that the US now hovers over many countries silently, every once in a while sending out a guided bomb to kill people on the ground

i think there’ll be big blowback on this…but after barry leaves office

…but surely a total buzzkill for leftists, for whom the big gun-control push is at least as much a cultural struggle as it is a serious attempt to reduce mass shootings.

It’s entirely a culture war for the lib-scum. They couldn’t give a rat’s a$s about shootings. I’m always struck by how hateful “liberals” are. They simply have a deep-rooted hatred of certain kinds of Americans. (Basically anyone with strength. Libs are weak people who hate strength because they feel threatened by it. They are truly broken people.) And they associate gun-ownership with the “type” of American that they bitterly despise. That’s the only reason that they are doing this. None of their prescriptions would do a damn thing about things like Sandy Hook. It’s just another manifestation of their hate. Respond to the irrational haters with even greater strength.

WhatSlushfund on January 21, 2013 at 7:28 PM

The liberals dug themselves in a hole. A very deep hole and they’re going to pay the price in 2014. Clinton understand that this is losing issue.

Gun ownerships will continue to grow because of two things. The internet and video games. The internet is a very good tool to use against the MSM. It dispel their lies and more people trust forums then they do the MSM. Videos games promote new younger generations into gun ownership. Once they get into the gun culture they will start moving toward the right.

“The motive of the destroyers is not love for communism, but hatred for America. Why hatred? Because America is the living refutation of a Kantian universe.

Today’s mawkish concern with and compassion for the feeble, the flawed, the suffering, the guilty, is a cover for the profoundly Kantian hatred of the innocent, the strong, the able, the successful, the virtuous, the confident, the happy. A philosophy out to destroy man’s mind is necessarily a philosophy of hatred for man, for man’s life, and for every human value. Hatred of the good for being the good, is the hallmark of the twentieth century. This is the enemy you are facing.”

What he should have said, and it wouldn’t have sounded so condescending was, there are a lot of gun owners who are Democrats and they vote. If they believe you’re coming after their guns, they will vote for the guy who isn’t coming after their guns.

First of all, the left keeps trying to bring in the hunting and the fishing. I do believe Heller changed that dynamic and the left doesn’t want to admit it. If you’re trying to defend yourself, why should you be limited by the size of the ammunition clip and the weapon you hold? You can rest assured that the person trying to break into your home could care less what Barack Obama and the democrats say the size of the magazine should be. Someone needs to get real.

Hmm, no mention of “hunting and fishing” anywhere. Pretty sure those activities were such integral parts of colonial life that it never would have occurred to the Framers to include an amendment specifically protecting that right. It was merely a given. It would have made just as much sense for them to include an amendment guaranteeing every American’s right to eat, drink, sleep and breathe. I mean, duh!

Yeah well, we will get to pay for that too. All these kids with dumbed down government education are taking loans for dumbed down worthless degrees. Ones where they can’t find jobs that will pay for their worthless degree. The professors trying to help students pursue worthwhile degrees are complaining about how much longer it is taking to get each generation up to speed. On the bright side, it looks like more elementary schools are taking advantage of computer learning systems that offset the general incompetence of the public sector teachers. About the William J. Clinton Foundation

Building on a lifetime of public service, President Bill Clinton established the William J. Clinton Foundation with the mission to improve global health, strengthen economies, promote health and wellness, and protect the environment by fostering partnerships among governments, businesses, nongovernmental organizations (NGOs), and private citizens to turn good intentions into measurable results. Since 2001, President Clinton’s vision and leadership have resulted in nearly 5 million people benefiting from lifesaving HIV/AIDS treatment; more than 15,000 U.S. schools building healthier learning environments; more than 33,000 micro-entrepreneurs, small business owners, and smallholder farmers improving their livelihoods and communities; and more than 248 million tons of CO2 being reduced in cities around the world. And President Clinton has redefined the way we think about giving and philanthropy through his Clinton Global Initiative, whose members have made more than 2,300 commitments that are improving the lives of nearly 400 million people in more than 180 countries.

Clinton is a brilliant politician – probably the best this nation has produced in the last 100 years. Sorry to say it – but it’s true – he plays the game better than anyone. jake-the-goose on January 21, 2013 at 6:56 PM

“I would be happy to give [Bill Clinton] a bl0w j0b just to thank him for keeping abortion legal. I think American women should be lining up with their presidential kneepads on to show their gratitude for keeping the theocracy off our backs.” -Time magazine’s Nina Burleigh, 1998

And she’s not alone among her colleagues of both sexes.

Without that kind of in-kind support he never woulda got elected. If we had an honest press, this country would be much more conservative. As it is, we fight an uphill battle and the Left gets a pass – and all the help it needs – from the press.
