So he made a big deal of announcing 23 “executive orders” that all the media kept describing as executive orders, but were mostly statements of intent and pleas to Congress to give him what he can’t get by executive order.

That’s not to say that he still can’t do some mischief. He’s trying to basically do away with private gun sales, for example, and if he can force all gun sales to go through federal dealers, then he can force all gun sales to go to a database.

But after the big build-up, this has to be a big disappointment for gun-control fans. There are some stories that Obama was furious when he had to scale down his executive orders enough that he couldn’t be impeached for violating the Constitution. I don’t know if it’s true, but after being forced to back down like this, it seems very plausible. That’s probably why the promised 19 executive orders were suddenly inflated to the number of 23, even though most of them were not executive orders at all. He was trying to puff up his statistics so it wouldn’t be so obvious that he had to back down.

The first six EOs relate to background checks – even though the Newtown shooter was already blocked from buying his own weapons and stole his mother’s guns instead.

I think it should be obvious now that the gun grabbers don’t really care whether their new gun restrictions would have stopped the Newtown shooter. They just saw an opportunity and went for it. In fact, virtually none of their “ideas” would have prevented — or even been an obstacle — to this happening.

In fact, there’s only reason I can see to bother pointing out how ineffective the proposed gun restrictions would have been: to showcase the hypocrisy of the gun-grabbers.

The statutory language, which remains in appropriations legislation for the Department of Health and Human Services to this day, is that “none of the funds made available in this title may be used, in whole or in part, to advocate or promote gun control.” I think it’s fair to say that this language has been interpreted at times to mean that none of the funds could be used to support research that, depending on its findings, might be used in support of efforts to alter current firearm policy.

I suppose I can see how Obama could argue that he isn’t doing anything forbidden.

I had thought we past a ban on this in the Budget. Am I wrong on this? If not, it is important to stop a President from spending money in ways which our laws forbid.
