It’s come to this: White House releases videos of young kids asking Obama for more gun control

Kevin Williamson on the histrionic presidency:

You may agree 100 percent with the president’s position on gun control, but his stagey histrionics, his endless reliance upon human props, his cheap sloganeering, his emotionally driven hectoring: all of that bespeaks a very deep contempt for his audience, which is the American people. If he really believes that surrounding himself with adorable little tots is a substitute for substantive arguments for well-thought-out policy proposals, he thinks that the people — you people — are a bunch of rubes. Unhappily, 51 percent of the American people are happy to endorse his low view of them. There is something peculiar to political enthusiasts, a phenomenon I observed at both conventions this year: People in political audiences know that they are being manipulated, cynically and professionally — and they enjoy it. Obama’s admirers look up to him because he looks down on them, not in spite of the fact. There is something more at play than the mere admiration of stagecraft…

The magic of theater is that is has the power to overwhelm thought: For a moment, you forget that you are watching actors reciting lines that they have memorized and making scripted movements, and you are taken into the world of the play. Obama’s politics of histrionics — the little children, the Sandra Flukes, the imperial stage dressing — also is conceived with the goal of overwhelming thought. That tells you something about the president and what he stands for. The continued success of this traveling medicine show of a presidency tells you something about the American people.

He wrote that yesterday, not knowing that the White House was hours away from rolling out video of child props actually reciting lines. (It was thoughtful of them to include the P.S. from the little boy in blue about Obama doing his best.) The clips are another example of O being more aggressive in pushing his agenda in his second term, which will be egged on by a media that’s eager to see some fightin’ liberalism in the Oval Office, Josiah-Bartlet-style. I think there’s more to this than just that, though: One of the reasons he’s relying so heavily on kids, I suspect, is because he knows gun control is going nowhere in Congress. Less than 40 percent of the public thinks new laws will stop gun violence; Senate Democrats from red states are already headed for the exits. Obama can’t do much legislatively for his base here but he can, at least, reassure them that they’re morally superior to the opposition and that they, despite their entrenched, passionate support for abortion rights, care about The Children in a way conservatives never will. In fact, I’d bet cash money that there’ll be response ads from conservative groups aping the format of these on other issues that don’t work out as well for Democrats. The national debt is an obvious area to be mined, but it’d be just adorable to see a two- or three-year-old asking “Mistah Pwesident” to discontinue his support for infanticide. For the children. Pwetty pweeze?

The money line here from the little girl in red, summing up liberal ambitions eloquently: “No guns, no guns, no guns, no guns.” Exit question for Chris Christie: While you’re busy grandstanding about that NRA ad for your blue-state audience, any thoughts on Obama’s use of kids to carry his water agenda-wise? I vaguely recall you goofing on teachers’ union stooges who are quick to enlist kids when arguing that pay cuts for public-school teachers will damage their education. Okay to do that sort of thing on an issue where you agree with O?

Ironic that those kids may “kill” their parents for making them dorks when they grow up.

We need a pact for that? Was never going to be an option.

Some conservative group should do a rebuttal to this featuring kids that are alive because their parents/older sibling/teacher or whomever was armed.

annoyinglittletwerp on January 17, 2013 at 8:03 PM

No, because THAT would be considered child exploitation by the MSM.

This is Obama’s America. Not unlike the old USSR. Those kids will denounce their parents for treasonous thoughts long before they are grown.

Unfortunately, qualifications such as those in bold have become pointless. They assume that the reader, regardless of his position, can see that Dear Leader is a demagogue and criticize him for being one. Sadly, millions of people cannot achieve this epistemic distance. They have nothing to say about the cult of personality surrounding Obama, nothing to say about the fact that he ran an explicitly messianic campaign, nothing to say about his dismissive attitudes, and nothing to say about how Obamacare is just plain bad law, regardless of how one thinks that health care should be provided. They have nothing to say about these and other things, because they are beholden to a narrative–and nothing can pierce that narrative.

Baerwulf on January 17, 2013 at 11:01 PM

I sure Obama would respond to a child telling him to stop with his “spending problem” because they don’t want to be stuck with the debt just so he can buy votes.

J_Crater on January 17, 2013 at 11:40 PM

These are basically snuff films in slow motion. Slow motion, cliff-hanger snuff films.

Cheap theatrics is exactly right.

If?

Demagoguery is the most basic principle of progressivism.

Enough of the people in white jackets posing as doctors, Greek columns, Office of the President elect, kids coached by their parents to be with barry and used as props, talks to a fifth grad class with prompters. This is really getting out of hand and there’s so much of it it becomes difficult for the media to cover all the BS. ENOUGH!

BTW, the NRA ad wasn’t the smartest move, but his children were not “used” in any way. What was being pointed out was Barry’s hypocrisy in rejecting the NRA’s suggestion that schools used armed guards, when his own children’s school does just that.

Meredith on January 17, 2013 at 7:47 PM

This from Meredith & this from JetBoy:

Obama’s kids shouldn’t even be mentioned in that NRA ad like they were.
JetBoy on January 17, 2013 at 7:30 PM

This type of soft little outrage for bringing up an extremely valid point from the right is one of the reasons the right fails to play any offense.
Your tepid protestations regarding bringing the battle home to the enemy is why the GOP is such a squish.
No one is off limits when they put themselves out there.
The NRA ad is appropriate.
Your insistence that we not ever ‘go there’ is ridiculous.
One can most certainly ‘go there’ if done the right way, which this was.
One HAS to go there & get obvious about these things.
People need the obvious thrown into their faces.
Not this little feinting playing on words BS hoping someone wises up.
The public needs the obvious stated to them over & over again.
Propagation of truthful information needs to be thrown from the right on a continual basis.
There are some who are so left they will not listen to the truth.
But others will if they get to hear it & it will pique their interest in deciding for themselves on an issue.
Many people make decisions based upon their emotions without considering the other side of things.
And the left is not going to present that other side.
The right has to do it.
So your wall flower shirking of things that are relevant & obvious outs you as a cowardly moderate in the end.
Bcs you have shown yourself to be unwilling to truly fight for the truth.

They are the people who will destroy the life boats just for spite so everyone goes down with them
And they are enemies of Liberty, pure & simple.
There was once a time when Americans were forced to take a side in things.
The loyalists finally had to change their tune & many of them moved to Canada after the war.

Hollywood, Madison Avenue and celebrity status are all adjectives for this President. Leadership, common sense and respect for the Constitution and the people of this country are all totally lacking in this President. Four years will destroy this country if the Senate and House don’t shun him.

Pardonme on January 18, 2013 at 9:20 AM

Shun hell no, impeach hell yes.

Pardonme on January 18, 2013 at 9:22 AM

Williamson is just now figuring this out? Using children, the sick, the poor, the elderly, etc as pawns for emotional propaganda has been a favorite leftist/progressive tool since about forever. Breitbart was right — the only way to effectively counter it is to shove it right back in their faces. Remember how the left squeeled in protest when anti-abortion protestors started using images of dismembered fetuses? The left knows graphic imagery and stagecraft work.

The recent NRA campaign is on to something by focusing on the president’s rank hypocrisy. Conservatives, Libertarians, and others who are fed up with statist authoritarianism need to keep it up.

RobertE on January 18, 2013 at 9:26 AM

…all of that bespeaks a very deep contempt for his audience, which is the American people.

Who have now voted for him twice, despite the performance of his first four years. As far as contempt goes, that would be a prime example of reinforcement.

Obama et. al should talk about these children:

Anyone who is (in my opinion righteously) knocking the NRA for their Obama’s kids ad…who doesn’t also knock the White House’s/Obama’s willingness to use kids as props in the middle of all this…
has no credibility.
In the NRA case, well they would have had to come up with a wholly different line of attack. Though likely not even capable of that.
But Obama could have had his presser as is…but with the kids offstage and off camera.

verbaluce on January 18, 2013 at 2:02 PM

When I was a Cub Scout Pack CubMaster about 10 years ago, I had to deal with a parent of this type with kids like these.
He got all bent out of shape when I had the local Society for Creative Anachronism (people whose hobby is playing rennaissance festival all the time) and they put on a fencing (sword-fighting) demo (olympic fencing style rules). The fencers were actually husband and wife and explained all about the rules, safety, sprotsmanship in bowing out if you felt a hit, etc. This one Dad went nuts about the “horribly graphic display of violence in front of impressionable little kids”. The kids all thought it was great – and I told the idiot to pull his head out of his…..

dentarthurdent on January 18, 2013 at 2:57 PM

These kids will all be good little commie stooges when they grow up – if they don’t go off the deep end when reality hits them in the face.
My kids learned how to handle and shoot guns starting in Cub Scouts – but they picked just a bit too much of the public school liberal indoctirnation – which thankfully reality is wiping away quickly (just not fast enough for my taste).

dentarthurdent on January 18, 2013 at 3:03 PM

The shameless thug-in-chief is not just a disgrace to the Oval Office; he is a disgrace to humanity. I am astounded than even one percent of the voters would fall for his snake oil, let only 51 percent. America has certainly been dumbed down…

The kids on camera was the whole point.

With them off camera, there was no use in the “presser”.

It was supposed to look like the kid’s “presser”, with Obama as a guest.

Not the other way around.

So you don’t see anything hypocritical about Obama claiming he wants to save our precious children from gun violence by trying to illegally subvert the Constitution, but then oppose saving the lives of the most vulnerable of all, the unborn?
You really don’t see a problem with this at all? Really?
