Cutter: Team O will activate the campaign apparatus to take on the gun lobby

posted at 5:31 pm on January 17, 2013 by Erika Johnsen

As we’re all painfully aware by now, President Obama might not be much for presiding — but when it comes to campaigning, the man knows his stuff. Barring some fiscal-cliff action, Team Obama has lain relatively dormant since the election, but they have hinted that they have every intention of putting their impressive machinery to work to back up the president’s second-term agenda, and the gun-control proposals he unveiled yesterday could certainly use some popular muscle.

Here some of this morning’s e-mail from Obama for America campaign manager Jim Messina:

Friend –

Yesterday, President Obama announced his plan to protect our children and our communities by helping reduce gun violence.

We won’t stop every violent act like the one in Newtown, Connecticut. But if we can save the life of even one child, the President believes each of us has a responsibility to take action.

People like you spoke out and demanded action. Your input, along with ideas from leaders and policymakers across the political spectrum, went into the President’s plan.

Learn more about the plan, and say you stand with President Obama in tackling this critical issue.

Most gun owners use their guns safely and responsibly, and the President believes firmly in protecting our Second Amendment rights.

But common-sense changes can go a long way in keeping our streets and our schools safer — and there’s too much at stake to stand by and wait for action.

And Stephanie Cutter was back on the trail on Obama’s behalf, too (video at RCP):

STEPHANIE CUTTER: President Obama provides the leadership here, and he said the American people have to speak up and make their voices heard in this debate. Just like the NRA is doing with there membership. And President Obama’s network across this country, grassroots individuals, who organize, volunteered with their time to get the president reelected are much more powerful than the NRA lobby.

And I think that you can expect to see that network activated, very soon. And for good reason. We need to pass commonsense legislation to keep guns out of the hands of criminals and those who shouldn’t be carrying guns. That’s the commonsense nature of this.

I think we can safely say that “common sense” is the hot new gun-control buzzword, but however they want to spin it, the Obama campaign may have their work cut out for them, as a new NBC/WSJ poll points out — could be an uphill battle turning around odds like these:

As Washington prepares for a political battle over the Obama White House’s proposals to curb gun violence after the Newtown, Conn., shootings, a new NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll finds that the National Rifle Association is more popular than the entertainment industry.

Forty-one percent of adults see the NRA — the nation’s top gun lobby — in a positive light, while 34 percent view it in a negative light.

By comparison, just 24 percent have positive feelings about the entertainment industry, and 39 percent have negative ones.

The NRA’s fav/unfav score is virtually unchanged from its 41 percent-to-29 percent rating in the Jan. 2011 NBC/WSJ poll, nearly two years before the Newtown shootings.

Although, apparently, the group has taken some kind of hit in overall popularity in recent weeks:

But three weeks after NRA chief executive Wayne LaPierre’s controversial press conference, in which he called for armed guards at the nation’s schools, the NRA is underwater in public approval, with 42 percent of respondents holding a positive opinion of the group and 45 percent with a negative perception, according to PPP. …

PPP speculates the NRA’s drop in popularity is due to the group’s advocacy for armed guards in schools. …

On Dec. 27, Gallup found that the NRA had a positive net favorability of 16 points, 54 percent to 38. The organization has been viewed favorably in all but one Gallup survey on the group since 1993.

As for those remaining undecideds-and/or-ambivalenst, however, Team Obama specializes in mobilizing the masses who normally don’t know enough/care enough and making them feel involved — I doubt any one political issue will inspire the same furor as a presidential election, but I won’t be underestimating them. I’m sure we’ll see his campaign apparatus transform into something more useful to his post-election aims soon, because there are plenty of other “hey look, I can accomplish something other than squabbling about fiscal cliffs and piling on debt in a second term” agenda items coming in short order, too.

Obama for America — the president’s campaign organization — is expected to announce plans to transition into a political group whose mission is to support Obama’s legislative agenda. A report in CNN suggested that top campaign aides are weighing whether to become a super PAC or a tax-exempt group that is not required to disclose donors.

Sessions on organizing in the gay, Latino and black communities — key constituencies that strongly supported Obama’s reelection effort — also will be held.

Already, there are signs the Obama political operation will invest heavily in the White House push to curb gun violence.

Oops: In my blogger’s-haste, I initially forgot to include the second set of NRA polls; added now!

There was a lot of fanfare in early 2009 about OFA and how it will bring about the arrival of the GREAT LIBERAL PUMPKIN, but even with the incentive of Obamacare and POTUS’s reelection, it was a flop in terms of helping Obama move congress.

Are they claiming that OFA is suddenly going to make Arkansas gunowners less inclined to kick Pryor’s behind if he votes for gun-grabbing legislation? Really tough to see that happening.

At most, they’ll marginally help in some swing districts.

Oh, and Republicans should start howling loud, often, and NOW about OFA not disclosing donors.

Already, there are signs the Obama political operation will invest heavily in the White House push to curb gun violence.

Really? They want to stop gun violence in urban areas? This is where almost all of the gun violence occurs … in areas with extremely strict and draconian gun laws.

Liberals are mentally ill. Everything they do causes more of the problem they wanted to supposedly take care of. Liberals should not … under any circumstance be allowed to own a gun … especially since virtually all of the nutjobs and assassins are liberals. They are all insane … and will eventually march to their demise just like the Eloi.

This isn’t up for a vote of the people. That happened a couple of months ago.

Obama got elected by a decidedly unimpressive margin, but a majority of the House got elected too. And a lot of those Republicans got a lot bigger margin than Obama could even dream of. Plus the Democrats who squeaked by in districts that won’t tolerate them voting for any of this stupid stuff. Just ask Joe Manchin.

So let the BHO team crank it up. Bring it on, indeed!

Maybe this time, maybe not yet. But sooner or later they’re gonna bring all that student-loan debt into play.

Ironic, isn’t it? Badly-educated and deeply in debt, those young people will be happy to trade some debt forgiveness for some old outdated constitutional thing that they don’t even know about.

The tragedy is that the older folks are the ones that know what this country used to be, and education+media have done a great job in preventing that knowledge from being passed down. As the seniors go away, an increasingly larger proportion of the population has no idea who we are/were, and become more and more willing to throw it all away for a few pieces of silver.

Get every single GOP member of Congress to say Zero is drunk on his own power, over and over, and the American people will be saying it, too. Paint him as the tyrant that he is, and it’s a corner he’ll never get out of.

Well, it should be interesting… Obama finally comes up against an opponent who fights. Having gotten him reelected, fiscal-reality-conquering Obamaphiles have the right to tap-dance on any poll showing him at 51% or higher, I guess, but touting a poll that shows him at a whopping 52% without showing the disapproval number is pretty lame.

It certainly doesn’t signify much to compare an incumbent President on whom everyone has an opinion to a civil rights organization whose combined opinion field is 75%. Particularly given that a politician’s approval rating by itself is good for accomplishing pretty much nothing except reelection, e.g. Obama’s entire first term except for his winning reelection.

To put another way, do you actually think that Obama’s 52% compares additively to the NRA’s 41%? Do you think Obama is going to win? C’mon, tell us how dumb we are. Cite Nate Silver and “math” if you want.

I sincerely hope the stupid party understands what’s going on here. This is just another campaign for Obama, he has no clue how to get legislation passed so he’ll campaign and demagogue until he gets his way, unless the polls turn against him. Don’t depend on Pravda and Izvestia to protect you on this, they’re already on the team with Obama and will refuse to report the facts so you have to devise your own strategy and that you’d better do.

You can’t completely circumvent the constitution unless you’re capable of showing support from the people and Obama, with the assistance of the media wing of the Democratic Party (Thanks Roger Hedgecock) will be drumming up as much support as he can get. These are community organizer tactics, not legislator tactics, and that’s all Obama knows.

One more thing, keep your eye on the ball, and it has nothing to do with gun control. Pass a budget, send it to the Senate and tell Obama and Company you will not raise the debt ceiling without a budget in place. PERIOD.

Democrats know how devoid of intelligence their base is and they are counting on it, again.

The media will keep harping on it, then commission polls to ….well, it goes like this:

How Democrats use the Media to Persuade Voters

1) An event occurs. Take for example, Sandy Hook or new nominations like Hagel and Lew.

2) The President and his advisers coordinate with subordinates what the talking points are, how to ridicule opposition to major concerns (to diffuse from the start) and how the media should focus on delivering the message.

3) Media receives their orders from Obama subordinates and begin crafting their reports and talking points to conform to talking points and ridicule.

4) Media begins the process of releasing positive stories to flood online and traditional news.

5) Cable and network media coordinate panels, filled mostly with liberals who are also prepared with talking points and points of ridicule, then invite on one or two lightweight “republicans” for the panel discussion who are not privileged to the talking points.

6) Web based media outlets then begin follow up stories to reiterate previous points and focus on “republican” guest host(s) comments to portray negatively.

7) Continue to focus on any negativity from any republican, even if fabricated, while reiterating previous points and pointing out any new refined points.

8) After a week or two of saturating network, cable on online news sources, commission “partisan” polls. The polls are commissioned for the purpose of determining how successful the media has been at forming public opinion to the talking points provided by the White house.

9) Release the poll results on network, cable and online media outlets to give the impression that the American public is behind the POTUS.

10) Continue final efforts of positive stories citing polls commissioned to reinforce the message that “everyone” is on board but the few “neanderthals” who are obstructing the POTUS’s agenda for the American people.

Just thought I’d point out there is a legal way to go about this, but the little would-be tyrant knows he would lose that fight. He’s no better than a terrorist, and I am sick of worrying what that a$$hole is up to.

Night Owl on January 17, 2013 at 6:41 PM

I’m not so sure. He could have the support, IMHO, but rousing up the undereducated simpletons he has for voters would be a very real challenge. He’d practically have to campaign for his amendment by sitting in front of a camera with a big picture book. It’s waaay easier just to try end-arounds.

MelonCollie on January 17, 2013 at 6:44 PM

Barky and cutter et al have no pull on this. It’s a brick wall. Mayors of failed cities can cry all they want. Thier policy will never translate out of city limits. You live in a city? Deal with what you voted for. You aren’t going to impose it on me.

why don’t you try to defeat him for a change?

sesquipedalian on January 17, 2013 at 6:29 PM

Where is 90% of his first term agenda, genius? You may not have noticed that your fearless leader has a little work ethic problem and a big problem following up on anything he says. If anyone really put some effort into it and quit worrying about being called a racist, it most likely wouldn’t be that hard. He’s like the Wizard of Oz, just a stupid little man behind a screen of thugs.

Thirty of the fifty seven states are controlled by Republicans.

As long as the Obamabots get ‘free’ stuff, they won’t move out of their chairs.

Pardon me if I’m not precisely enthusiastic about relying on that fact, aside from the handful who are taking hard stands.

You make a good point Night Owl.

In his heart of hearts, he is a lazy man.

Goebbels orgasmed in his grave, again.

His ultimate dreams are realized by Obama and the media.

Asked by Walters to name “the trait you most deplore in yourself,” the president — who was interviewed alongside his wife Michelle — responded, “laziness.” “You’re lazy?” Walters asked. “You know it’s interesting, there is a deep down, underneath all the work I do, I think there’s a laziness in me. “It’s probably from, you know, growing up in Hawaii and it’s sunny outside, and sitting on the beach,” Obama said with a smile.

Anti-Control on January 17, 2013 at 7:13 PM

I get these emails from Messina and usually respond. It makes me feel better and I think he should hear from people (the majority) who disagree with him.
To this one, I said that Obama’s actions were silly, and that the rationale – if it “saves one life, it’s worth doing” is ridiculous. Following that logic, Obama should immediately ban matches, cars, swimming pools, rope, kitchen knives, and pillows.

LASue on January 17, 2013 at 7:24 PM

look dear, to paraphrase gary lineker, politics is a game that pits candidates and interest groups against each other, and at the end, obama wins.

He’s not going to win on a new AWB. Sorry.

This tools never going to go away. After 2016, if we still have a country, this jaggoff will just reactivate the old apparatus to campaign for the next nominee like clinton did, then the 2018 midterms, then the 2020 general (which will also be billed as the most important in your lifetime), then his daughters’ city council campaigns, etc….

We need to pass commonsense legislation to keep guns out of the hands of criminals and those who shouldn’t be carrying guns.

Stephanie sweetie, there are already laws keeping guns out of the hands of criminals and those not supposed to carry them. You might want to ask your boss why his prosecutions of those individuals have dropped off by 40 percent.

you may have missed it but that poll compares the nra to the entertainment industry, not obama.

utter fail.

sesquipedalian on January 17, 2013 at 5:49 PM

The NRA has been demonized by liberals for decades, but it’s still more popular than the entertainment industry which has been the propaganda arm of the Democratic Party for decades.
