Obama unveils 23 executive actions on guns

posted at 1:11 pm on January 16, 2013 by Erika Johnsen

In full, the White House’s fact sheet and executive summary of the gun-control proposals Obama announced in his presser Wednesday afternoon, with a reinstatement of an assault-weapons ban, universal background checks, and 10-bullet limits on magazine capacities figuring prominently:

I don’t know what was harder to stomach about that speech: President Obama’s completely glib suggestion that “this is the land of the free and it always will be,” as if American exceptionalism is somehow a simple given that does not require constant vigilance, or his lamenting all of the divisiveness around gun-control politics but then turning around and blaming groups like the NRA for “ginning up fear” and daring not to abide by progressive notions of safety and security.

The quick reaction from Sen. Marco Rubio:

Rubio, often mentioned as a likely 2016 presidential candidate, said it would have been better if Obama had decided to announce his proposals without being accompanied by children. …

“I think ultimately he has a right to do that, and I understand he has a right to do that,” Rubio said. “I think most of us would have preferred if it just had been a straightforward address to the country because it implies that somehow those of us who do not agree with his public policy prescriptions don’t equally care about children.” …

Rubio called Democrats’ interest in pushing a new assault-weapons ban “misplaced.”

“I think it’s completely misplaced. Because here’s the issue in this public policy debate that’s different from others: There is a constitutional right to bear arms,” Rubio said. “I did not create that and he cannot erase that. It is in the Constitution. If they want to change the Constitution, if they want to believe the Second Amendment should not be in there or if they believe it should be rewritten in the 21st century then let them have the guts to stand up and propose that.”

23 Executive orders that not one single law-abiding American will give a rat’s ass about.

Obama is not a king. Presidents don’t make laws by proclaiming them to be the law. That’s not how our system works.

baldylox on January 16, 2013 at 1:24 PM

This is how Communists work. They optimize the bureaucracy FIRST, so that when the real orders come down the pipe, everyone will be in place, weapons identified, owners cross referenced via medical records, form 4477 and background identity checks. The Real Purpose here was it get the Private Transfers taken care of so that you can’t sell to a friend.

Big Ears is waiting for the next School shooting to drop the other shoe. False Flag? It won’t matter, it will provide the lubrication to overrun the Constitution.

Whew! Now he has solved the gun massacre at school problem. That was easy.

Why doesn’t he solve the unemployment problem the same way? Can’t he just fix it? I bet a bunch of people who need jobs would be willing to stand behind him as he signs the executive orders giving them jobs.

My big thing is the trigger locks.
I grew up in a pro-gun home. There were no gun-locks in my home-and I knew where the one always loaded weapon was. NOTHING happened because I was taught gun safety and respect at a young age. The same went for my brother, and later my son. None of us would have ever DREAMED of touching a weapon w/ out adult supervision.
Rather than me lock up my weapon-there by making it potentially inaccessible to me in an emergency, how about teaching kids respect for weapons and teaching them the proper actions to take if they find one.

I guess I can’t talk to my doctor anymore about depression lest I get blackballed and can no longer by guns or ammo.

Ironically, the first time we talked about depression was a couple of years ago when I felt really low after Obamacare was signed into law.

I don’t know but he never asked them again. I live in MA so it was most likely some sort of crap from the anti-gun dimwits here. My kids are both in their twenties now and they were around ten or twelve when he asked them. I went to my doctor last night and fully expected to be asked if I had firearms but, I kind of got him distracted talking about the medical value of pot and he didn’t ask me half the questions he generally does during my annual “wellness” visit.

Reinstatement of an assault-weapons ban – that didn’t do anything to reduce crime

Universal background checks – that the Feral government has no the authority to implement

And 10-bullet limits on magazine capacities – so to be followed by 7 (as in NY) then 5 then 2 then… hey that’s a fancy metal club you have there.

The liberal philosophy of government is to assume everybody is an idiot that needs to have their options so limited by regulation as to preclude the possibility of them making a serious mistake.

The other axiom of the liberal philosophy of government is that the people making these regulations who are ignorant of who you are, what you need, what kind of person you are, or how you do you job or live your life, are more qualified than you are to decide these things.

Your line of thinking is invariably result in an anti-Constitutionalist bringing up the Sandy Hook shooter. Not saying it is right, just that the left is trying to confiscate as many weapons and curtail our rights to the fullest extent possible. They’re thrilled to death that one mentally ill person killed 20 children and truly regret that he didn’t get even more children before the police broke in. I mean this last thought sincerely and it disgusts me to no end.

Happy Nomad on January 16, 2013 at 1:56 PM

Galt2009 on January 16, 2013 at 1:58 PM

In 2011:

There were 12,664 homicides.

8,583 (67.8%) were committed with firearms.

Of the 8,583:

6,220 (72.5%) were committed with handguns.

323 (3.8%) were committed with rifles.

356 (4.2%) were committed with shotguns.

97 (1.1%) were committed with “other guns.”

1,587 (18.5%) were committed with “firearms, type not stated.”

A new AWB would not affect the overwhelming majority of murders committed with firearms.

Until Proggies stand up and demand a ban on handguns, we know that they are not serious about reducing gun crime. The relentless assault on assault weapons is just another assault on “white, conservative men,” who are the majority of those that legally own “assault weapons” and I say that as a “white, libertarian female.”

If they were really serious, then they would want to attack gun crime where it is most prevalent and with the type of guns most often used and that is in urban areas with handguns.

If you’re interested in a comparison, here are the figures from 2007:

Total homicides: 14,916

Homicides committed with firearms: 10,129

Homicides committed with handguns: 7,398

Homicides committed with rifles: 453

Homicides committed with shotguns: 457

Homicides committed with “other guns”: 116

Homicides committed with “firearms, type not stated”: 1,705

You’ll notice that the homicide-by-gun rate has dropped across-the-board since 2007.

Total homicides: Decrease of 15.1%

Homicides committed with firearms: Decrease of 15.3%

Homicides committed with handguns: Decrease of 18.94%

Homicides committed with rifles: Decrease of 29%.

Homicides committed with shotguns: Decrease of 22.1%.

Homicides committed with “other guns”: Decrease of 16.4%.

Homicides committed with “firearms, type not stated”: Decrease of 6.9%.

Seriously though, it’s about time that someone in Washington stopped living paralyzed in fear of the gun lobby and did something. I’m proud of our president standing up for his people in the face of special interests.
Typhonsentra on January 16, 2013 at 1:54 PM

His people? Surely that was a typo. Since when are free citizens “his”?

I think having the kids up there was lame.
Maybe they’re getting advice from the same inept PR folks the NRA hires.

You have obviously not been paying attention the past four years. There ALWAYS has to be a crowd of victims or sycophants standing with the moron when he does these oh so courageous things. Oh, and a teleprompter.

Is there anyone on this thread who has not, in the past four years, seriously mulled the idea of turning in his passport, renouncing his American citizenship, and moving to another nation, if such did exist, where the lamp of liberty has not gone out?

“His” people bought 4.5 million small arms in the last two months, have flooded gun shows, and are contributing to the greatest run on guns and equipment since this nation was founded.

I don’t think that word means what you think it means.

“That’s impossible! How will the Emperor maintain control without the bureaucracy?”
The Regional governors now have direct control over their territories. Fear will keep the local systems in line.”

On the list:

New ATF Director B. Todd Jones.

Long time associate of Eric Holder.

Has been acting director of ATF from Aug 31, 2012, also is the U.S. Atty. for Minnesota.
Has done both jobs. Seems to some then not much of a job either place as Jones can do both of them. Or,,, he is just the new fall gun put in place to protect the Pres. and Holder from actual knowledge.

B. Todd Jones is now acting Bus Bump Boy.

“The state must declare the child to be the most precious treasure of the people. As long as the government is perceived as working for the benefit of the children, the people will happily endure almost any curtailment of liberty and almost any deprivation.”

Godwin’s Law be damned; I was thinking over lunch how frightening it is that so many sycophantic Obama followers are quite like Germans of Hitler’s day.

We can sit from here and ask, “why on earth did they not see what was going on, not hear the open lies, not see where it was leading them, etc?”

I’m sitting here today and asking the same question about waaaaaay too many of my fellow citizens, and frankly, it’s disturbing.

All those SS people around with guns and high-cap mags….jeebus what if those mags caused an SS agent to snap just as they cause average citizens to snap and mow down their neighbors?

The SS probably get drugs to prevent that.

As we’re the two children whose mother saved them using a firearm when the crowbar wielding criminal hunted them down in the attic crawl space to which they had retreated when he broke into their home.

Funny that, isn’t it?

Yet she’s supposed to be ashamed of herself, according to Holder. Not O, who hides behind children to circumvent Congress.

Even if there was no 2nd Amendment, the president and congress would have no right to propose gun control. It’s a matter for the states. So Rubio is partially right except where he says “rewritten in the 21st century” because that would end up giving the feds the ability to regulate that which they should not have the right to regulate under the 2nd or without the 2nd.

Unless he wants to change the language to give the individual states complete power in regulating guns, and that new amendment must stress that the federal government cannot infringe at all on the states.

There must be amendment changes at the same time confirming the 10th Amendment and confirming in text a state’s right to independence if they no longer want to be tied to the Union.

If the Democrats refuse, then they just want children to die because the 2nd will remain as is and the liberal states won’t be able to do all the infringing they believe is necessary.

Piers Morgan has the most inane tweet.

Obama’s hit the nail on the head – the right to life, especially for children, surely supercedes any other rights?

Now tell me, did Obama really use the phrase “right to life” or is Piers completely unaware he’s used an anti-abortion phrase?

Since it’s for the children, why not just enact prohibitions on the 7% of the population that is performing the majority of the murders?

Who do you need to be protected from?

Law-abiding gun owners who follow the law and who don’t commit crimes or murders with their guns?

What are you talking about?

Good Lt on January 16, 2013 at 2:13 PM

Part of Feinstein’s plan would make it illegal to even pass on your guns to family members. When you pass on the guns would become property of the State.

So I would either have to do a background check on my own son to give him a .22 bolt rifle, or be unable to bequeath him that same gun as an inheritance.

I really wish that someone would bring up the fact that every manual on terrorism that the “religion of peace” has come up with mentions the fact that schools are soft targets and should be exploited. None of these BS approaches speak to this threat. Remember the terrorists that attacked/took hostages and massacred the students and teachers and then blew it up. Chechnya I think is where it was. Guns in schools would slow down/stop some of this happening. This is purely a gun grab initiative beginning and it will not stop.
