Obama unveils 23 executive actions on guns

posted at 1:11 pm on January 16, 2013 by Erika Johnsen

In full, the White House’s fact sheet and executive summary of the gun-control proposals Obama announced in his presser Wednesday afternoon, with a reinstatement of an assault-weapons ban, universal background checks, and 10-bullet limits on magazine capacities figuring prominently:

I don’t know what was harder to stomach about that speech: President Obama’s completely glib suggestion that “this is the land of the free and it always will be,” as if American exceptionalism is somehow a simple given that does not require constant vigilance, or his lamenting all of the divisiveness around gun-control politics but then turning around and blaming groups like the NRA for “ginning up fear” and daring not to abide by progressive notions of safety and security.

The quick reaction from Sen. Marco Rubio:

Rubio, often mentioned as a likely 2016 presidential candidate, said it would have been better if Obama had decided to announce his proposals without being accompanied by children. …

“I think ultimately he has a right to do that, and I understand he has a right to do that,” Rubio said. “I think most of us would have preferred if it just had been a straightforward address to the country because it implies that somehow those of us who do not agree with his public policy prescriptions don’t equally care about children.” …

Rubio called Democrats’ interest in pushing a new assault-weapons ban “misplaced.”

“I think it’s completely misplaced. Because here’s the issue in this public policy debate that’s different from others: There is a constitutional right to bear arms,” Rubio said. “I did not create that and he cannot erase that. It is in the Constitution. If they want to change the Constitution, if they want to believe the Second Amendment should not be in there or if they believe it should be rewritten in the 21st century then let them have the guts to stand up and propose that.”

Have you read my piece on the UK gun ban, knife crime and the overall violent crime rate there?

Gun Bans: Mad Dogs & Englishmen

I also write about Tony Martin in it, but give the entire story. Steyn’s article was written in 2000 before the appeal. Martin lost the appeal on self-defence grounds, but won a reduction of his murder conviction/life sentence with a minimum tariff of 8 years to manslaughter/5 years with a minimum tariff of 3 years. The appellate court bought his diminished responsibility argument and claim that he suffered from a borderline paranoid personality disorder, which manifested itself in a paranoia about people breaking into his home.

Yeah, I know. A man shoots two home invaders and HE is the one paranoid about people breaking into his home.

Please don’t beat up on nonpartisan. He’s not particularly nasty. Yeah, he believes every trope and cliche as if it’s profoundly true. But maybe you all can still teach him and help him out. Save one life… you know?

Of course he could be a 45-year-old living in his mother’s basement eating Cheetos and dropping crumbs into his key board while IMing girls that he’s a French model.

But he’s either got an IQ below 98, or he’s just a kid who hasn’t been around, hasn’t seen anything yet, believes his teachers, and doesn’t know anything about the world that he doesn’t get from a video game.

Wait until he tells us if he’s still living on his parent’s dime before you cuss him out.

Using the same argument that the left are using against the AR15, (which is that it looks like military, never mind it shoots precisely like other semi-automatic rifles), we should also ban the Hummer 2(even though it’s just a GM pickup under the skin).

Obamacare is now a gun control program. Doctors are enlisted to gather and enter gun ownership info into computerized medical records. Then when it comes time to pay insurance premiums, you will see surcharges for gun ownership, just like surcharges for smoking, due to extra risk to health/life.

As Dear Leader might say:

“You can keep your guns. You can have all the guns you want. But keeping them will bankrupt you.”

Unfortunately the libs don’t have to kick their reps because their reps believe what they do. Fervently. About the only time they kick them is when they aren’t acting liberal enough or when they’re thinking about leaving the plantation.

We, on the other hand, have basically worn out both legs trying to kick our reps in the right direction.

Rubio’s statement regarding The One’s use of children as props was weak tea. Rubio should have been much stronger in calling this what it was- the use of children as propaganda props and exploitation pure and simple. Republicans have got to stop being tentative and restrained and start going on aggressive offense against these marxist propaganda tactics.

The man has his flaws, as does Beck and Rush, but they generally do call these Leftists out (though Joe Wilson came pretty darn close). Haven’t seen that from any of our elected GOP darlings.

I guess actually having to worry about being re-elected and being part of what amounts to being an organized crime syndicate does that to what may have once been honorable Citizens.

Heh, and Obama thinks gun owners are going to comply???
There is no way that Obama can accomplish his goals in 4 years.
The federal government would have to break many laws to get
where they want to get. Of course Obama will try…..
The Republicans had better man up and dry up any funds
to accomplish these goals.
God only knows where Obama is stashing all the money he has already stolen.
There are only so many “green energy” companies…..
I know Obama wants to create a federal database to track gun owners.
Only a matter of time until every agency and healthcare provider has you by the nuts.

He’s a “loon” because the LSM and the establishment say he is.

just as they have done with Palin, Rush and Beck.

I’ll listen to what any of the above have to say and trust them more than any of these “Conservative” knuckleheads that talk a good game as long as they get elected, but allow their inner RINO to shine through when it comes down to important, core issues.

Most of what Jones says is what most people around here feel about things. I don’t take his word for anything. Some of the stuff he says is so out there, I just have to look it up on another source. I’d say 80% the stuff he says is true or at least has a basis in fact. A small percentage is wild stuff that is probably more for entertainment purposes than anything.

But I guess many still think we’ll get things done by being the political branch of niceness and passivity.

Dr. ZhivBlago on January 16, 2013 at 8:58 PM

But when Alex Jones does so, he’s just a nutcase…OK, whatever.

He IS a nutcase.

Every act of terror or violence is NOT a false flag operation by the government, the globalists and/or the bankers.

The Bilderbergs don’t have newborn babies wrapped in 24 karat gold roasted and delivered to them to eat every week.

The Gene Rosen from Sandy Hook is a retired psychologist and is not the same Gene Rosen, who is a member of SAG.

If you listen to or read Alex Jones — and for the sake of my readers, I do so that they won’t have to — you will see every kind of conspiracy theory imaginable from the “staged moon landing” and the government’s alleged “destruction of the original Moon (Or was it Mars? Maybe, we should ask Sheila Jackson-Lee?) landing tapes” (How did they get through the Van Allen Radiation Belts?) to the 9/11 truther movement and nanothermite to mind-control through fluoridated water to a “New World Order” plot to depopulate the world population by 90% after which the remaining proles will slave for the elite, who will (through medical technology and organ harvesting — no doubt through vivisection) turn into some sort of humanoid, computerised lizardmen (OK, I threw in the lizardmen part), who will live forever — transhumanism — snacking on the babies of the disgusting humans that are worse than the lowest of cockroaches. (If you have 2:19:30, you can watch Alex Jones’ entire opus on this subject, Endgame – Blueprint for Global Enslavement, here).

And, if all of that isn’t enough to make him a nutcase, then the fact that he thinks the nutcase, Cynthia McKinney, who is #6 on my TOTALLY BATSHIT CRAZY: THE SIX MOST INSANE PEOPLE TO EVER RUN FOR PRESIDENT list (If McKinney’s on 6th, just imagine who’s on 1st!), IS SANE AND INSIGHTFUL.

You really don’t think that the U.S. is slowly giving up its sovereignty to the U.N.? It wasn’t Clinton that publicly said NWO, it was Bush Sr.

Are you really going to say there is no cabal amongst the LSM to viciously attack everyone that dares to announce their Leftist darlings?

Or is that OK, because we know that the LSM are in cahoots…but no way in hell anybody else can be. Uh-uh, just not possible folks.

Nope nor do I need to see it. I am quite familiar with the presstitutes’ formula. Again, I do not need a loon like Alex Jones telling me about it or what to think.

Or is that OK, because we know that the LSM are in cahoots…but no way in hell anybody else can be. Uh-uh, just not possible folks.

Luv, just because the MSM hates Alex Jones, along with everyone else on the Right, does not make him any less of a loon. People like Alex Jones have done more harm than good. As a libertarian, I have been fighting the crackpots like Jones for years. For example, I agree with Ron Paul on probably 85% of the issues, but it’s the things like his fear of “pink money” that makes supporting him a bridge too far.

I can dismiss the shortcomings of others (excluding criminal or immoral actions) if I believe what they truly believe in is aligned with my values. ** Gekkobear raises his hand **

Ooh, I know this one.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1196941/The-violent-country-Europe-Britain-worse-South-Africa-U-S.html

UK 2,034 violent crimes per 100,000 population.
US 466 violent crimes per 100,000 population.

And how is the trend going since their gun ban? Hey, I’ve got something related to that number too.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rape_statistics

2003-2010 timeframe available, rape statistics not all violent crime sadly.
2003 the US had 32 rapes per 100,000 and the UK had 27 rapes per 100,000.
2010 the US had 25 rapes per 100,000 and the UK had 29 rapes per 100,000.

So there you have it, a clear comparison.

UK 2,000+ violent crimes per 100,000 and a rising crime rate.
US < 500 violent crimes per 100,000 and a falling crime rate.

bgibbs1000 on January 17, 2013 at 3:18 AM

I think the one logical angle being missed by our more liberal friends posting here is the purpose of the gun laws on the books and how the President’s reaction and direction won’t amount to anything.

Currently, the method of handling “gun violence” in America is to tighten gun laws. There is the belief that by making it harder to get a gun legally, criminals can be starved of guns in the long run.

If we were to apply this to the rest of our society, we would be calling on lowering speed limits because we continue to have too many people speeding. Never mind enacting tougher punishments, we need to reduce the speed limit because it would make going MUCH faster more difficult. If we just make going faster more difficult, less people will do it.

All the President is doing is turning law abiding citizens into criminals. The Governor of New York has done the same thing by making every gun owner with a 10 rd. magazine a criminal. Those people have done nothing illegal, but suddenly in a blink of an eye they have! How exactly does turning ordinary people into criminals do anything to curb criminal activity?

I poured through the Daily Koz site looking for a good laugh and keep seeing the same theme expressed that liberals have the right to seize guns because THEIR safety might be jeopardy. Again, I have to deal with all the morons on the roads who text message and eat while driving which jeopardizes my safety yet I have ZERO authority to take away their license. I could only imagine the outrage if we were to enact seriously strict driving requirements such as those used in Finland where you spend serious time in the classroom and skid pad all paid for at your expense. Liberals would demand their freedom to travel, never mind that car accidents kill 35,000 people a year including children. But liberals own cars and not guns so getting rid of guns is easy when you don’t own one or see the value in it.

This whole debate has me feeling like I’m taking crazy pills. The logic is so incredibly simple and the law is VERY clear to that even a constitutional law professor pretending to be President can understand it. Yet, people are overwhelmed with feelings of guilt for owning a weapon and fear of fellow strangers owning them.

It is easy to give away the rights of other people, but the moment these anti-gun advocates see something important to them being threatened then they start invoking their inner-constitutional scholar. This makes me wish we were still arguing about the President’s birth certificate.

Flashwing on January 17, 2013 at 3:22 AM

It looks like this thread is getting a little slow, so please forgive me if I go a little off-topic.

I just want to say that your medical history is the largest compilation of information about your life that most people will probably ever have. And Obamacare, that is the nationalization of health insurance coverage, and the elctronic collection and oversight of all medical records, first begun under HIPAA, opens every aspect of a person’s life to government inspection.

This isn’t just about blood pressure, obesity, hip replacements, or heart by-passes. A typical Electronic Medical Record calls for “history taking” that consists of checking off easily 150 boxes in each of about a dozen catagories, under each of a half-dozen major headings. These headings are something along the lines of:
Past Medical History
Past Surgical History
Allergies
Family History
Reproductive history and
Social History.

Boxes include questions not just such as “type of occupation”, and “frequent travel”, but also “drug usage”, “doesn’t use seatbelts”, “physical abuse”, “psychiatric disorders” and “multiple sexual partners”.

If you had a problem with drug abuse, and the government had access to your records, do you really think you’re going to tell the truth to your doctor about this?

This last is ridiculously broad, and for example doesn’t take into account periods of marriage and periods of dating. And it includes no time-frame.

And it is common to be asked, How many is multiple?, and Over what period of time? The answers are often so entangled with periods of marriage, celibacy or college years that usually the box goes unchecked.

And frankly, it’s nobody’s business. I can only imagine that the CDC will be setting policy based on an analysis of these answers.

And then on top of all this, these records can be cross-referenced to the charts of other family members.

When even sealed divorce and child custody records are “leaked” to the press, how likely is it that government bureaucrats will be accessing and collating all this information?

Sadly, the references to Fascism, i.e., Ernst Röhm, Benito Mussolini, Nicolae Ceaușescuetc, etc. (read a book) does NOT refer to the NRA – as some of us know what happened to both Fascists, but most Americans have no idea who they were. It refers to the despotic manner in which the man-child in mom-jeans “leads” the country. Hell, at least Ernst Röhm and Benito Mussolini had snappy uniforms!
Remember … It’s all about optics.

What really scares one is that decades of progressive socialist policies of the Dems have created a mega violent class of urban super predators and these are ones committing the vast majority of murders throughout the country. Rather than deal with this the Dem answer is to disarm the law abiding and leave them at the mercy of the predator class. Maybe that was the objective from the beginning.

Not yet:

Twenty-three executive actions announced by the president command federal agencies to — among other things — conduct studies, issue letters, review standards and launch a national dialogue on gun violence.

http://thehill.com/homenews/administration/277661-president-exec-orders-not-enough#ixzz2IEuWMYZh

He’s (thankfully) trapped by the stupid-old-white-white-guys’ Constitution at the “conduct studies” and “issue letters” stage. He’s still impotent on these matters and just trying to community organize the willingly uninformed ” native americans respected animals and nature” voters. He’s great at campaigning, though, and that’s what this mostly is.

Congressional laws are the key, and Obama knows it. From the link:

“As important as these steps are, they are in no way a substitute for action from members of Congress,” he said during remarks at the White House. “To make a real and lasting difference, Congress, too, must act, and Congress must act soon.”

We must do it soon, btw. 2008-2010 when (D)s controlled both Executive and Legislative branches and were fine with abruptly forcing massively unpopular laws onto their subjects wasn’t any good, but now it needs to be soon.
