New NRA ad: Let’s redistribute school security

posted at 8:01 am on January 16, 2013 by Ed Morrissey

The NRA seems to have adopted a new strategy in their efforts to push back gun control: If you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em.  Oh, they’re not falling in line with gun bans and magazine limits — they’re just adopting Barack Obama’s playbook in arguing against them.  Via Buzzfeed, here’s a new 30-second ad painting Obama as “just another elitist hypocrite” for disdaining the NRA’s proposal to subsidize armed guards in schools while send his own children to a school that has armed security on site.  Why should the rich and powerful be the only families with armed security guards for their children?  Redistribute the security!

You have to admire the strategy, even if you may be skeptical of the proposal.  These types of events are rare to the point where most armed guards won’t ever see anything close to a Newtown over the course of their lifetimes, and school security isn’t a federal issue; it’s local, and schools can add guards now, if they want them.  This is more of a pushback against the scorn heaped on the NRA for proposing the idea in the wake of Sandy Hook, even though the same scorn-heapers backed Bill Clinton’s COPS program, which subsidized armed guards in schools.  That blatant hypocrisy had the White House at least belatedly considering the NRA’s proposal as one part of their response.

The NRA must be doing something right in public relations, by the way.  Either that, or the nation’s best gunseller is even better than we imagined:

A day before President Barack Obama is scheduled to release Vice President Joe Biden’s recommendations to curb gun violence in the United States, the National Rifle Association told U.S. News and World Report that they have seen membership grow by 250,000 in the month since the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in Newtown, Connecticut.

Politico reported membership had grown by more than 100,000 five days ago. The NRA says that when Politico reported the story, membership was close to 200,000, but the number has drastically grown in just five days. The association now has over 4.25 million members, but the NRA says that number is always fluctuating as memberships expire and new members join.

“I would say that every time President Obama opens his mouth and Sen. [Dianne] Feinstein opens her mouth and they talk about gun bans and restricting the rights of law abiding Americans, people pay attention to that and sign up,” says Andrew Arulanandam, the NRA’s public affairs director.

Yes, I think people are paying very close attention these days to Washington and the gun grabbers.

Are you rejecting that?

listens2glenn on January 16, 2013 at 11:04 AM

Now we’re getting into nitpicking territory. “The human race” is a generic reference to all humans. That reference does not negate the existence of specific races within the human race.

Unless you’re going to make the liberal claim that we’re all the same in every way, but I highly doubt you are.

Midas on January 16, 2013 at 10:58 AM

Sadly there are plenty examples of people holding these positions. From local talk radio here:

There was one guy who called in to say that nobody should be allowed to carry weapons. If they needed to get it from their home to a shooting range, they should be required to get a courrier to take it.

There was a guy who thought all guns should be confiscated because there private gun ownership is a threat to Muslims. He was shut down when asked how confiscation of guns worked in Syria.

There was a woman who declared that we didn’t need private gun ownership because that was why we have a government- to keep us safe.

……. Oh! Wait a minute. You said intelligent creatures. Nevermind.

Your claim that “race” has been “disproved”?

I saw similar sentiments in an ICR magazine of all places awhile back and was equally disappointed in them.

MelonCollie on January 16, 2013 at 11:02 AM

I’m talking about a statement that was included in either 2000 or 2010 U.S. census about how anthropologists have found no evidence to establish distinguishing “races” in humans–rather only cultural and ethnic distinctions. I use that line against libs who often critisize conservatives of “denying science” on other topics like evolution and global warming.

Throwing in “race” gets into ethnic and cultural differences between various groups of humans. You might get better traction that instead of discussing a “human race” you talk in terms of “humankind” if you want to lump all human beings into one group. Because you never know when the humans v. I think you might be missing the point. Biologically speaking, there really is only one human race. At one time there were very isolated gene pools, but there has been a lot of mixing and there will continue to be.

You’re making a jump here. There are differences in ethnicity and culture that defines one group of humans from another. Call it race if you want but that’s a pretty rudimentary term for doing so.

The Aryan Nation thing takes such a discussion to a whole different place because it argues that a certain race is superior to all others.

Exactly right. There are cultural and ethnic differences, and common physical traits shared by people whose ancestors were from particular regions as a result of once-isolated gene pools, but biologically we are one race.

I thought conservatives were usually against dividing people by arbitrarily defined “racial” groups, and instead favored seeing people as human individuals.

Cleombrotus on January 16, 2013 at 12:08 PM

Clearly the answer to the problem is for NY to quickly pass new laws making it (more) illegal to push people in front of subway trains.

That’ll stop all those would-be pushers. We know this to be true, because more laws are the answer to every problem!

AZCoyote on January 16, 2013 at 8:43 AM

They use their arms when pushing someone in front of a train. We obviously need to dis-arm all of the people in NY to ensure this doesn’t happen again. Let the surgeries begin!

can_con on January 16, 2013 at 12:11 PM

I don’t know how the race thing got started on this thread, and I’m not going to wade through 4 pages of comments to find out. However, one way of distinguishing “racism” (Aryan type or Sharpton type or whatnot) from things liberals like to call “racism” is causation vs correlation. If you think people are a certain way because of the color of their skin, then you’re probably a racist. If you think that a goodly number of people who happen to have certain phenotypical characteristics in common also happen to indulge in certain pathological behaviors, but it is neither restricted to them nor includes them all, then you might be called a racist but it doesn’t make you one.

Yes, we are one single race. We are also separate “races” as that term has been used historically – that is, groups of people identifiable by some phenotype (hair, skin, eyes, stature). When the government comes calling, wanting to know my race, I put “human” – because they have no business (given that one of the underpinnings of our freedom is equality under the law) dividing up the citizens in such a way. When a school wants to give a “thumb on the scale” to someone for admission to college by reference to their “race” I am outraged because it has no relationship to their temperament or aptitude for graduating, and it hurts others who might otherwise have that temperament and aptitude. When the police begin looking for a suspect and describe his “race” I am not outraged, because visual identification is a key element in capturing a suspect.
