Is the White House freezing Fox out of pressers?

posted at 10:01 am on January 16, 2013 by Ed Morrissey

It’s no secret that Fox News is not Barack Obama’s favorite news channel.  In his first year, the White House more or less declared war on Fox, suspending its strategy only when other media outlets began to publicly criticize Obama for it, blocking the White House attempt to freeze Fox out of coverage.  They may have relented publicly on the deep freeze, but a new study by the University of Minnesota’s Eric Ostermeier suggests that the Obama administration has quietly imposed a big chill on Fox instead:

Over the course of the president’s first term, he has generally maintained the tiered approach as to which outlets ask the questions (with the Big 3 and Associated Press usually getting the green light), although the president has departed from tradition on occasion – famously calling on a digital-only media outlet’s reporter (Huffington Post’s Sam Stein) during his first news conference in February 2009.

But as for FOX, these have been relatively lean years in terms of getting the presidential nod at news conferences, particularly in light of the news outlet’s reach vis-à-vis some of the other media organizations which have received more questions.

How lean?

A Smart Politics analysis finds that ABC reporters have been called on the most frequently during Barack Obama’s solo news conferences followed by CBS, the Associated Press, and NBC with FOX News coming in at a distant ninth at less than half the rate of the top outlets and less than 40 percent of press conferences overall.

During that time, Fox has been the highest-rated cable news network, a lead which hasn’t been seriously challenged since before Obama took office.  That ninth-place position only applies to the entirety of the term, too.  As Eric points out, Fox has only been allowed one question in the last six pressers Obama has given.  Ed Henry, who moved from CNN to Fox, got a lot more attention when representing his former employer.

Until his move to CNN and out of the White House press corps, Jake Tapper was the leading question-getter at 23, but NBC’s Chuck Todd tied Tapper in Monday’s presser.  Todd, however, has the lead for followup questions, and it’s apparently not close:

Todd, who is perhaps the King of the follow-up question, has made the most of the 23 news conferences in which his name has been called by the president.

Todd has been able to parlay this into 52 series of questions and follow-up questions (excluding multiple questions posed within one series), including multiple queries to the president on the debt ceiling on Monday.

The Fox chill seems to be a more recent phenomenon, over the past year, rather than a sustained effort from the 2009 War on Fox.  It’s not much of a secret why Obama would want to avoid Fox News in his pressers, although Todd and Major Garrett didn’t give Obama an easy ride on Monday, either, but perhaps a question of why lately.

Too bad they’re on cable because my hunch is there a lot of people cutting off that pipeline of expensive sludge.

If you’ve bought a TV recently you are aware you have to register it in order to get an access code for the internal scanner to capture all the over the air HD broadcasts. This is helpfully explained as tracking usage for future concepts of royalty payments

Let it happen. I will bet the networks will go the way of daily rags.

When it comes to tyrants, petty dictators, and those merely having a severe personality disorder, not being one of the adulant crowd is a certain way of being deemed an enemy…of the individual or of the state.

Not good.

Fawning, tripping over each other, tossing sweet murmurs, fainting at each utterance…yep, that’s the way to gain favor from the Tyrant in Chief…and those with sociopathic disorders.

Was a time when having a free and independent press was the hallmark of a nation healthy in itself, cognizant of its own merit and strength, and on a path for greatness.

Today?

Not so much.

Really?

You mean the network where Stephanopolous was supposed to stepped down from This Week after the election, and let Tapper take over?

Then didn’t. With no reason given. Forcing Tapper out.

Huh.

It would make you think Georgie is a Barry linebacker and the one who really controls ABC News.

Archivarix on January 16, 2013 at 10:12 AM

According to the study, Obama’s called on Fox News 14 times. He’s called on CNN (which ranked 8th) only 16 times. And CNN was tied with the NYT. So if he’s freezing out Fox, he’s practically freezing out them as well.

In right-wing delusions, Obama’s gun control plan is monarchy
January 16, 2013, 5:00 a.m.
**************************

Even before President Obama announced his proposed gun control measures,

right-wing paranoids and Republican members of Congress were raving about

impeachment,

incipient monarchy
*******************

and civil war.

Obama’s proposal is expected to include a call for banning military-style assault weapons and high-capacity magazines, as well as strengthening the background check system for gun buyers. While Congress would have to approve those major steps, he may also lay out 19 actions he can take by executive order, such as mandating that federal agencies gather data on gun safety.

In the wake of the schoolroom massacre in Newtown, Conn., and many other brutal gun-related tragedies in recent months, ideas for dealing with school safety and mental illness are also said to be on Obama’s list. But most of the attention will be directed at his gun control plan, and much of it will be hotheaded and shrill.

The usual gun rights lunatics are preemptively saying it may be necessary to take up arms to stop the government from confiscating everyone’s guns. Rabid rocker Ted Nugent has declared Obama’s proposals “psychotic” and said putting Vice President Joe Biden and Atty. Gen. Eric Holder in charge of the task force to come up with gun legislation is comparable to “hiring Jeffrey Dahmer to tell us how to take care of our children.”

Lighthouse in Love

The media used to feature awful images of blacks despite indications that we were not using all of our nation’s talent. We used to have all white sports teams! Watch the films! Comedy gold.

They were really fond of Stalin and Hitler. The fact that those guys were snuffing out millions of lives was not important. The mess these guys were making might have been lessened if someone noticed how they were antagonistic to rights we had since 1250.

The media is ignoring things again. We have an economy suffering and a host of other problems that could profit from some of the basic elements of common sense and innovation from an investigative press. The poor are quietly huddled on the deck, there are are rocks and shoals ahead.

Love is blind and the light is out.

If Fox chooses not to be part of the propaganda machine, and the President decides to acknowledge that fact by way of concentrating his oh-so-short Q&A time on his reliable supporters, then now and in future years Fox will always be able to point to this fact as an accomplishment.

Maybe Fox News should begin running ads reporting this study, and claiming it proves the administration is frightened of Fox. They’ll increase even further their already strong base of loyal viewers!
