Mike Pence’s first move: A regulatory moratorium for Indiana

posted at 4:31 pm on January 15, 2013 by Erika Johnsen

As Congressional Republicans are constantly trying to point out, enacting all of the additional new sources of “revenue” in the world will never come even remotely close to solving our long term debt problems. The only real solution for turning our country around is inducing our economy into a rate of robust economic growth that creates more productive jobs, brings more people into the middle class, and reduces poverty and subsequently our entitlement burden — and no amount of “asking the wealthy to pay a little more” will ever accomplish that. More taxes, more regulations, and more top-down bureaucracy, i.e. everything that the Obama administration keeps touting, will only leave us redistributing out of a stagnant economic pool instead of makin’ it rain private-sector jobs and wealth creation.

Indiana’s brand-new Republican Governor Mike Pence, after being inaugurated on Monday, quickly made it his first move to enact a regulatory moratorium to help fight unemployment. Take note, Washington:

The former House Republican Conference chairman issued an executive order suspending Indiana’s rulemaking process shortly after he was sworn in Monday. The measure is designed to lower the cost of doing business and encourage hiring in the state, where the 8.2 percent unemployment rate is slightly higher than the national average.

“Over several decades the proliferation of administrative rules and regulations at all levels of government has increased the complexity and expense of economic life,” the order says. “Reducing this regulatory burden will promote citizens’ freedom to engage in individual, family and business pursuits.”

In addition to directing state agencies to halt any rulemaking activity indefinitely, the order requires the state’s budget office to evaluate existing rules and put forth recommendations for which should be repealed, beginning with the most onerous.

The compliance costs of the federal government’s all-too-often whimsical regulations take a serious toll on our economy, and more often than not, they disproportionately hurt the smaller businesses that the Obama administration claims to want to help. The threat of even more piled-on, overly-zealous, “it’s for your own good” regulations are wreaking uncertainty all over the national economy (and ObamaCare, Dodd-Frank, and the EPA have not yet begun to fight!), a concept that Gov. Pence isn’t failing to grasp.

As I’ve mentioned elsewhere before, this guy is pretty much my dream candidate for 2016. This is a really strong start for his governorship, and I might actually consider supporting the GOP if this guy ends up as the candidate and he doesn’t end up facing some massive scandal or collapse during his time as governor.

But we’ll probably get Jeb.

” More taxes, more regulations, and more top-down bureaucracy, i.e. everything that the Obama administration keeps touting,…”

Not just the Obowma administration, but this is the ideology of the entire Left…

… Why is it so difficult to simply point this out to the American people?

Before Perry jumped in, Jindal and Pence were my first and second choices for president.
Bravo, Governor.

… Why is it so difficult to simply point this out to the American people?

If they don’t have to deal with it it doesn’t matter to them is why. My clients are regulated up to their eye teeth. Some of them appreciate the concept because it weeds out the smaller players. Others live in fear of breaking any rules because they are afraid of creating a record or paying a fine. And some actually think I work with local, state and federal regulators to create work for myself. The other 80% just deal with it and gripe.

And their customers know nothing of their struggles to comply.

good start for Mike Pence. I always felt he decided to run for governor to set himself for national presidential run. Watch out 2016…backbenchers (or youngsters) are making their moves.

CoffeeLover on January 15, 2013 at 5:00 PM

And so the race for 2016 primaries is set – Mike Pence, Rand Paul, Bobby Jindal, and either Bush or his pet Latino. I foresee a 22%-24%-26%-28% split, and – I wanna see your hands, kids – someone will now tell me whom it benefits most…

What are you talking about? Being a Republican makes him a racist, sexist, and homophobe. Get with the program, junior.

MaxMBJ on January 15, 2013 at 5:13 PM

Archivarix on January 15, 2013 at 5:04 PM

I really think conservatives need to have a pre-primary and select one of the conservative candidates to run in the republican primary. The press promotes the most easily defeated RINO, so having only one solid conservative in the primary may be the way to counter that.

I’m with the program, but they don’t accuse people of all three at once. Can’t have a press conference with a specific aggrieved group backing you up if you level too many charges at once.

Flange on January 15, 2013 at 5:24 PM

All the local news carried reports of his swearing in along with more time reporting on the “3 dozen” protestors there protesting him about stuff they thought he might do. Of course they failed to report that they were all union…

I can hardly wait for the press to report on the protests at Obamas inauguration…

Sorry, but you probably didn’t realize that Executive Order for Gun Control #15 outlaws Presidential elections due to security issues and causes elevated levels of anger and conflict.

This is also an as yet undiscovered and unread provision of Obamacare, which goes into effect immediately upon the swearing in of Barry next week, to address those elevated levels of anger and anxiety concerning who’d be worthy and able of replacing our Imperial President. Anger and anxiety are not good for ones health.

OMG!!!! This is what we need. I am jealous of friends and relatives that still live there. Undoing what was done to its citizens. What a fantastic governing concept. I am in love with this guy!

BetseyRoss on January 15, 2013 at 6:23 PM

Oh, I meant to add to the above. No one knows better what is coming to his state in the form of regulations such as Obamacare. You better believe he is going to fight that one, too. All of it. Hopefully he will be the model that every Republican governor will follow.

BetseyRoss on January 15, 2013 at 6:25 PM

I wish he had run last year. The ‘no executive experience’ is not a disqualifier. The problem with 0bama is not that he lacked executive experience, it’s his ideas. He has actually been a fairly effective executive in ramming his plans down our throats.

Lou Budvis on January 15, 2013 at 6:43 PM

From the article:

“It’s important that we have someone on the ground in Washington, D.C. monitoring these changes so that my office, Governor-elect Pence’s Office and our members of Congress and the Legislature have an early warning of potential changes adversely affecting Indiana,” Zoeller said.

Sadly, that used to be the role of the Senate before it was changed from being the house of Congress for the state governments to being the house of Congress for the political machine controlling the largest metro area of each state.

This is absolutely great! Godspeed, Gov. Pence! Mike Pence has always been one of my favorites when he was in Congress.
