Breaking: Obama to announce gun-control proposals tomorrow

posted at 12:31 pm on January 15, 2013 by Ed Morrissey

No big surprises, except perhaps the timing:

President Obama will unveil a sweeping set of gun-control proposals at midday Wednesday, including an assault weapons ban, universal background checks and limits on the number of bullets magazines can hold, according to sources familiar with the plans.

The announcement, to be delivered at the White House, is also expected to include a slate of up to 19 executive actions that the Obama administration can take on its own to attempt to limit gun violence.  The White House has invited key lawmakers as well as gun-control advocates to appear at Wednesday’s policy rollout, according to two officials who have been invited to the event.

The rollout event looks like a revealing bit of theater.  I’m going to guess right now that there won’t be a broad bipartisan showing at it, since the above proposals don’t even have unanimous Democratic support, especially the assault-weapons ban.  Instead, it seems that Obama wants to surround himself with as many supporters as possible and claim it shows a broad consensus for his plans, even while Harry Reid is downplaying the likelihood that its centerpiece can pass the Democratic-controlled Senate.

Why rush the rest and get ahead of Reid on the assault-weapons ban?  Obama could easily have just announced all of the EOs and been depicted as a Commander in Chief, even though — as Allahpundit pointed out earlier today — the amount of authority he can exert through EOs is very limited.  If Reid isn’t fully on board, then there’s simply no way that Obama will get 60 votes in the Senate to clear cloture on this package, and some of the nays may well come from red-state Democrats eyeing the 2014 contests nervously, like Mark Pryor in Arkansas.

It’s going to take STATES standing up and saying NO! Texas already has a proposed bill to make it a CRIME for any federal officer to attempt to enforce more gun laws within it’s borders.

The Feds can’t even enforce marijuana laws now because some states now refuse to allow it.

The same thing will happen here. Let Ogabe do his worst – ban assault rifles … whatever.

The Southern States will resist this with extreme prejudice.

It just struck me… there has been an odd push to link 0bama with Lincoln… the photoshops…. the swearing in on the Lincoln Bible, etc.

I had been thinking that it was all about trying to make 0bama just look great.

Now I’m wondering if it’s aimed more toward setting up 0bama as Lincoln, crushing states’ rights and signing multiple emergency, Constitution-violating laws. Lincoln was great.. but it is not much remembered that he exercised harsh censorship of the press and other things, including imprisoning a lot of pro-slavery Northerners without trial, in the name of national emergency.

Slavery was abhorrent.. but Lincoln approached it in a way that elevated the federal government over state government.

Just musing on this… what if 0bama is trying to position himself for a situation where he sics the Feds on any state that opposes him?

Taking away Americans’ guns has a whole different moral cast than freeing men who were enslaved. Count on 0bama to try his best to conflate the two.

This one won’t end the same.

But … I’m not talking about war or anything. In truth, the Federal government doesn’t have the balls to enforce marijuana laws and they won’t have the balls to enforce gun laws if states choose to ignore them.

I said “Southern States” – because well, those are the reddest states – the only states that could possibly muster the nerve to stand up and fight for the 2nd (and 10th) amendment. Certainly – we cannot expect Massachusettes to stand up and say “NO NEW GUN LAWS”.

1. Just a thinking thing, do you think that given what the Apache know of the deal of not having guns to protect your family, your nation, your very lives, that any Apache would give in to handing over all our guns.

2. Do you think that your King B. Obama has the power to remove guns from the Native American Nations here within the U.S.A. and too would you liberals condon said actions by your commie thug King?

3. Do you think that all the veterans who went into combat zones for 1, 2, 3, sometimes 4 or more tours will just forget our oath to serve and protect the Constitution of the United States of America forgin and domestic.

4. Are you such a common fool as to belive you and those like you will not be most likely the first to be enslaved by the state you pray to as you will be the easy targets.

5. Think of the courage and fighting sprit that has kept you free, and just think of the power here within that is now at the ready to defend our Constitution, freedom and liberty.

6. Your a sad use of the human sprit.

7. We will do what is required of U.S. once more do not think for a second we do not know the price of freedom.

– ban abortion – again, reference the “if it saves even one life” meme – and this will save millions, so libs will be ecstatic!

“The very threat of such an act has stirred many conservatives to respond passionately in opposition to such a possibility, none more so than Texas Congressman Steve Stockman.

In a statement released Monday, Stockman said: “The White House’s recent announcement they will use executive orders and executive actions to infringe on our constitutionally-protected right to keep and bear arms is an unconstitutional and unconscionable attack on the very founding principles of this republic….

Still, that didn’t stop Stockman from making threats if Obama took “actions (that) are an existential threat to this nation.”

In his statement, Stockman said he “will seek to thwart this action by any means necessary, including but not limited to eliminating funding for implementation, defunding the White House, and even filing articles of impeachment.”

James O’Keefe, Project Veritas brings the lie to “gun-free” zones:

“Our nation’s children spend the majority of their week within schools that are starkly emblazoned with signs that read ‘Gun Free Zone.’ Project Veritas put that same concept to the test with some of America’s most fervent advocates for gun control,” he said.

He said his team went door-to-door in New York, New Jersey and Washington to see which outspoken champions for gun control would be willing to declare their own home as a “Gun Free Zone.”

“It’s amazing to see members of our media equivocate and contradict their spoken and written words when faced with the dilemma to declare their own homes as gun free,” O’Keefe said. “Surprisingly, we found that the homes of the very New York paper that was willing to put the lives and fortunes of gun owners at risk by publishing their names and addresses, were also the most heavily armed and protected.

Hey, we can make schools gun-free zones when we apply gun-free zones to all federal property (Capitol, White House, Congressional offices, Executive offices, Federal Triangle, etc.) and the residential property of all federal elected officials.

Well, yes.
SCOTUS ruled that the Constitution, via the 9th & 14th Amendments did indeed provide that right.

verbaluce on January 15, 2013 at 5:41 PM

SCOTUS also ruled during WWII that the government can intern Japanese Americans. “Shall not be infringed” is slightly more specific than your self-serving, bas_tardized version of the Constitution.

The Count on January 15, 2013 at 6:01 PM

Does the Constitution say, “the right of the people to have an abortion shall not be infringed”? Just checking.

The Count on January 15, 2013 at 5:24 PM

No, it does not and Verbaluce would be wise to go and read Roe v Wade.

Well, yes.
SCOTUS ruled that the Constitution, via the 9th & 14th Amendments did indeed provide that right.

verbaluce on January 15, 2013 at 5:41 PM

The Court did NOT rule that it was a right that could not be infringed upon, which is why Roe had a trimester framework and the Court upheld the ban on partial birth abortions in Gonzales v. Carhart, 550 U.S. 124 (2007).

It is being reported that when Herr Obama makes his big orders he will have himself surrounded by children for stage props. I wonder if he will have any Mexican children there whose father or mother he got murdered by his furnishing thousand of assault weapons to murderous Mexican Drug Gangs? I’m guessing not.

VorDaj on January 15, 2013 at 5:39 PM

I’m guessing no reporter will ask this, nor will any late show comedian think to sarcastically point it out.

SO now….. New York has passed background checks on buying AMMO! And also record keeping.

So….. if you happen to have a pre-1968 weapon… not on the federal rolls… if you go to buy ammo for it, now they know what you have.

Dang – I never thought we could actually get here, but here we are!

If this ammo-check law goes national – I think we will see a flat-out, honest-to-goodness revolt against this president, and it may not end well for anyone.

0bama to surround himself with children for his pronouncement.

Who else does stuff like this?

Muslims hide weapons in mosques.

Iranian put nuke facilities under hospitals.

Saddam sent children ahead of the troops through the minefields.

Kidnappers grab a woman or child when the police close in, forcing police to attempt a risky headshot.

The bad guy in “High Noon” grabs Grace Kelly to hide behind.

Barry, why are you hiding behind children to attack the 2nd Amendment?

Are you a white hat or a black hat?
