Biden: There are 19 separate gun-control actions Obama could take by executive order

posted at 9:31 am on January 15, 2013 by Allahpundit

It’s mostly marginal stuff dealing with mental-health reporting requirements by federal agencies, broader sharing of databases among law enforcement, more prosecutions for crimes under existing laws, etc. The one measure that might significantly limit access to some guns has to do with blocking the importation of certain ones made overseas, but there’s bipartisan presidential precedent for that. Bush 41 issued an order in 1989 barring some foreign-made assault weapons and then Clinton expanded on it in 1998 after gun manufacturers snared by Bush’s order modified their weapons to evade it. Somewhere in Europe right now, a gun maker is sitting around waiting for O’s order so that he can get to work tweaking his design to evade that order too.

I wonder if he’ll take all 19 actions, to show the left that he’s literally doing everything he can, or if he’ll decline to take a few just to prove to gun-rights activists how “reasonable” he’s being.

Actions the president could take on his own are likely to include imposing new limits on guns imported from overseas, compelling federal agencies to improve sharing of mental health records and directing the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to conduct research on gun violence, according to those briefed on the effort.

White House officials and Democratic lawmakers said that there are clear limits to what the president can and cannot do, and that Mr. Obama has no plans to push beyond what he would need Congressional authority to accomplish

Rahm Emanuel, the mayor of Chicago and Mr. Obama’s former chief of staff, joined the debate on Monday and said that the president should “clear the table” by doing whatever he can administratively so small issues do not get in the way of the bigger legislative fights over access to guns.

Rarely will see you a White House that went to war in Libya without congressional authorization concede that there are clear limits to The One’s executive prerogatives, but they know how dodgy the politics of gun control are. He’s not going to do something bold and unilateral and risk a public backlash when he’s got the debt ceiling, immigration, and lord knows what else in the pipe this year. Better to bow to congressional authority, let Congress pass some small, watered-down bill dealing with background checks or whatever, and then grumble that the Republicans have once again thwarted Progress. The only way the final two years of his presidency will have meaning is if Democrats take back the House in 2014. Why do something stupid now that jeopardizes their chances?

Here’s Rand Paul on executive orders. Exit question: Are we sure new gun laws are as much of a national priority as the White House claims? Compare the numbers below for gun control versus, oh, say, reducing federal spending. Something to bear in mind as debt-ceiling armageddon approaches.

Dear Leader is threatening to crack down and enforce laws already on the books. LOL.

He says it with a straight face and the mainstream media propaganda machine hacks don’t bother to aggressively ask why the laws weren’t being enforced in the first place. Or why new laws infringing on the rights of 320 million citizens are needed when existing laws are not even being enforced. All because every couple of years some nutjob grabs a gun and starts shooting defenseless unarmed people.

I have to start laughing about all of this else I’d cry while observing the end of our Republic and the failure of the American experiment in universal suffrage democracy. The stupid and foolish cannot govern themselves without voting in wannabe dictators and relinquishing their freedom to them.

TFG really is trying to relive the Clinton years, isn’t he?

Will impeachment followed by a failure to convict in the Senate be the next benchmark met?

Stay tuned.

You know, these idiots keep harping about making a law that a lost or stolen firearm must be reported to the police. Are you kidding me??? I had a firearm stolen when I stopped at a convenience store on my way home from the range many years ago. I had a little pick-up truck with no place to really hide the bag that contained the gun but it didn’t look like a gun bag anyway. But someone did a smash-and-grab to get to all of the stuff on my front seat, including my softball mitt. I IMMEDIATELY went to the police department and reported it stolen!! The last thing I needed was for a gun registered to me to turn up in a crime scene. I feel pretty sure that most other gun owners would feel pretty much the same way. And of course, I have since learned more secure ways to transport my firearms. Plus, I still have a copy of that police report from 1991.

There are only two things that focus the human mind – one, when one is about to be hung and two, when one’s pocket is about to be picked.

I want Oligula to issue a 20th EO: Each of the six heroes at Sandy Hook are being awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom. That is an EO with which I can agree.

Went to Wal-Mart last night… the shelves are almost bare of ammo and guns. About half a dozen oddball rifles left. No pistol ammo left in any caliber. Almost no rifle ammo left…. a few boxes of 30-06 as about it. Almost all lead shotgun shells are gone, except #7-1/2 and BB. Some steel shot left… which shows what people think of it.

Place is basically cleaned out.

cane_loader on January 15, 2013 at 11:22 AM

I saw a couple of items over the weekend that Wally-World Corporate has placed a hold on all ammo orders.

And Rush said it too.

However, I Googled it this AM and supposedly Wal-Mart HQ is denying it.

Says it’s a myth. If so, it’s spreading like wildfire anyway.

You cannot purchase pistol bullet of any kind at our local Wal-Mart, even if under mortal threat.

They are all gone.

Shelves are bare.

cane_loader on January 15, 2013 at 3:45 PM

The Wal-Mart story seems to be centered around the same thing as AP’s comment:

Somewhere in Europe right now, a gun maker is sitting around waiting for O’s order so that he can get to work tweaking his design to evade that order too.

They are waiting to see what develops so they aren’t stuck with a bunch of inventory they can’t move.

GWB on January 15, 2013 at 4:34 PM

We all know where this will end. Guns will be deemed a “health care” issue and will be governed under Obamacare. After all, there are serious “costs” related to gun violence, right? And with said violence affecting the minority community disproportionally, most of those “costs” are borne by the public at large, not the victims and shooters, who are either on the dole, or earn their money illegally. So it can’t be fair to make non-gun owners to pay, and as we all know, Obama is ALL about fairness…at least his version of it. (And we all know how that works for our side.) Look for the tobacco comparisons…that’ll be the template. Forget the fact that, whereas all smokers subject themselves to known risks, almost every gun owner is responsible and causes no problem to themselves or others. That won’t matter. Because all gun owners are exactly the same, from the crack dealer downtown to the pheasant hunting aristocrat.

Legal gun owners will pay, through direct taxes and fees to be imposed on maufacturers and sellers, for the “costs” of gun violence, raising prices to the point that many can no longer afford weapons and ammunition. These “costs”, of course, will be determined by the CDC or some other Government body, so they will be defined high. And as far as I can tell, the Leftists can do this without Congress.

Obamacare: they passed it, and there’s no limit to what we’ll eventually see is in it.

If the shortage is due to overwhelming demand, then fine. Let’s hope the ammo companies see the profit and work the plants double time.

I need some ammo ANYWAY, for practice, and am UNABLE TO BUY IT, due to the empty shelves.

What kind of presidency induces Americans to buy out all the available ammo?

A tyrannical one… a despotic one, that who.

If the shortage due to any sort of intimidation or government action, and not and simple temporary supply-and-demand shortage then this is WAR.

We can’t blame WalMart, but this action of theirs has brought the whole issue a little more into “public focus.”

Does WalMart have “paid strategists” who are that good?

I guarantee you, Obama will use executive order to pass anything he thinks Congress won’t, with regard to gun laws.

Fine. Boycott Wally world for their sporting goods. They need to understand whether it is better to sit at the table with the govt or supply their market. Try to have it both ways should cost you business just on general principles. We’ll see. If they aren’t punished then they will have done the right thing corporate -wise.

Ironically, for all the ranting and raving the unions and libtards did over the years to shut Walmart down, it would be funny if enough people got mad for their kissing up to Oboobi. I wonder if old Sam is rolling in his grave?
