Open thread: Final Obama presser of first term

posted at 11:01 am on January 14, 2013 by Ed Morrissey

A momentous occasion, to be sure, since Obama tried to get by without holding any more press conferences with White House correspondents than absolutely necessary:

So what’s on tap for today’s presser?  Barack Obama will want to make the case for tougher gun laws, even though his own administration shows little enthusiasm for enforcing those on the books already.  He’s almost certainly going to make a pitch for his upcoming proposal on immigration reform, as he races to get ahead of Marco Rubio and secure the center.  Obama will get help in that regard from his latest Cabinet announcement:

Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano will remain in the same post as President Obama begins a second term, a White House official said Monday. …

A former governor of Arizona, Napolitano may play an important role in Obama’s push for immigration legislation, a high early priority for the administration.

Given the rising criticism of his all-white-male Cabinet announcements of late, it’s no surprise that Napolitano is sticking around for a while longer.  After the departure of Hilda Solis from Labor, Obama can’t afford to lose another woman, even if it would give him the opportunity to name another.

Will the press corps make an issue of the criticism over his Cabinet appointments?  Will they ask questions about what Chuck Hagel’s appointment says about the Obama administration’s posture on Iran?  I’d guess yes to the first, and no to the second, but maybe someone will surprise me.  Keep an eye on Jake Tapper’s replacement in the gaggle, Jonathan Karl, to see if he will continue Tapper’s tradition of nonpartisan scrutiny.

Update: The start of the presser has been pushed back to 11:30 ET.

I meant to say it’s funny how nonpartisan claims there is no affirmative action present at the Harvard Law Review… Honestly, did you just throw out that statement based on faith?

I’m quite certain that the true believers in Obama’s greatness are so blinded that they simply take for granted that there was anything at all besides Obama’s sheer perfection leading to his ascension to his current position.

he’s just spending the time purposely denigrating the motives of the Republicans.

CoffeeLover on January 14, 2013 at 12:24 PM

It’s a really good, basic rule of thumb in politics not to question the motives of others. Focus on what’s to be done, and the differences there. Reid called Boehner a “dictator”. That’s not helpful.

there is no affirmative action for president of harvard law review, you clown

nonpartisan on January 14, 2013 at 12:21 PM

It was then that the saga of the Law Review’s affirmative action program began, when the editors adopted a race- and gender-conscious policy by a 45 to 39 vote, to the vehement opposition of some faculty members.

Several months of intense debate and negotiations ensued between the Review and the faculty, at the end of which the Review began for the first time considering factors other than merit in choosing its members.
barack-obama-harvard-2

Young Barack Obama seems to have majored in posing for photos

Prior to 1981, law students could join the Review either by being among the top five students in their first-year sections—each class used to be divided into four sections—or through a combination of their grades and their scores on an annual writing competition, a process designed to preserve absolute objectivity.

But the 1981 editors felt it necessary for their admission policy to take into account the underrepresentation of minorities and women.

Under their modified plan, the top four students in each first-year section would still be elected to the Review, but the fifth spot would be reserved for the top-scoring minority student among the top 25, and if no such minority student existed, the fifth spot would go to the woman with the highest grades.

Frankly, Barry did get to be editor of Harvard Law Review because he was black- if I remember correctly. Affirmative action also helped him become President.

cmsinaz on January 14, 2013 at 12:49 PM

Is Obama stupid or is he simply a shifty, lying shyster? Not raising the debt ceiling will not send this country into default unless we cannot or refuse to pay the interest on the debt. We can either pay the interest with the existing revenue stream or because we are a feat money system we can simply print more money. If we use our existing revenue stream then we cannot make new debt lest we break the law by exceeding the debt limit. If we print more money the only down side is devaluation which may or may not be seriously damaging. The point is that if the debt ceiling is not raised, Obama can simply avoid default by using the current stream of money or he can cause the treasury to print more money. The only “gun to his head” is his own if he elects not to pay the interest on the debt. In this one he holds the bag, not congress.

You gotta be kidding me. That’s crazy. Wal-Mart’s bread and butter is the red-state shoppers, with a high percentage of gun owners.

Wal-Mart is opening a can of whoop-ass with its prime customers, if true.

But…… Wal-Mart may also be figuring that people NEED Wal-Mart, as Wal-Mart ran the smaller stores out of business in many areas, and is going to shove it down people’s throats, a la 0bamacare.

Either way, this is going to create and even greater sense of offense among red-state customers.

For those who say that the obamination can just pay the interest and print more money, that has already happened. The dollar is worth much less now than when the obamination first took office, regardless of the lies put out by the CPI. (same lies as the unemployment stats). If BO further debases the dollar, the $16 trillion national debt will only have a relative value of maybe $13 or $14 Trillion. The last trillion that the obamination put on is not as valuable as the first trillion.

We are not a deadbeat nation

Yes we are, real deadbeats try to pay their bills with bouncing checks and maxed out credit cards all the time!

Even Rush Limbaugh said a little while ago, (although maybe he was reading something), that we have to raise the debt ceiling to pay the bills, but that isn’t the only way, in fact it shouldn’t even be allowed. The way you pay the bills is you get a job, or ask for a raise, or get another job or—cut spending!

Only deadbeats demand that their credit card limit be raised so they can “pay their bills”, and when the credit card company refuses, only deadbeats blame the credit card company for their inability to pay their bills.

Two people, among millions in this country, who seem not to care about what is happening.
How about we put the blame squarely on where it belongs, party affiliations aside.
PROGRESSIVE Liberal ideas leaning toward socialism & communism, and the people that seek to implement them, are the people who are responsible for all of this.
Wilson was one of the 1st major players toward social justice mantra crap & tearing down the ideals of this country & why we became a Constitutional Republic & not just another Democracy.
I want our Republic back. Not this ba$tardized version of what people THINK the founders meant.
IT’s easy to see what they meant. There is nothing mysterious about it. They laid it all out for us to see. These ideals are STATIC. They were never meant to be dynamic.
Ideas & standards for ALL TIME.
IT is those who cannot & will not play by the original rules who are responsible.
That does include Bush, & others who were GOP before 7 after him in all levels of govt.
And the most numerous guilty parties of them all happen to overwhelmingly be Democrats.

The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies. … Increasing America’s debt weakens us domestically and internationally. Leadership means that ‘the buck stops here. Instead, Washington is shifting the burden of bad choices today onto the backs of our children and grandchildren. America has a debt problem and a failure of leadership. Americans deserve better.

One of the biggest scams perpetrated on the American people. An 18% increase in outlays in 2009, never rolled back, but used as a baseline for continuing resolutions. That’s about $1.8 trillion in extra spending since 2009.

While everyone knows who Honey Boo Boo is, I bet only 1 in 1000 Americans have actually looked at the Historical Federal outlays/Revenues charts available online or even have a clue to this. That’s why the GOP talking about a spending problem never gets through to people.

So what he’s saying to his low-information base is: we have to keep incurring more debt to keep from defaulting on our debt. Makes a lot of sense, don’t it? I’m the same way, whenever I get in a tight spot, I just spend and borrow more.

Joe Biden said it best when he said: “We have to keep spending to keep from going bankrupt.”

What did Mark Levin say about Obama’s press conf. today?

APACHEWHOKNOWS on January 14, 2013 at 3:50 PM

MARK LEVIN: I’m not into imperial presidents who act imperial and speak imperial and Obama forgets there’s a Constitution. Yes, he keeps telling us he won reelection. Congratulations, but guess what? The Constitution wasn’t up for election, it’s not up for a referendum. He has to comply with it, too.

He was sent back to Washington, but he’s got a strict list of rules that he has to follow as president. When he gets up there and starts saying, if Congress doesn’t do this, I’m going to do this unilaterally, it violates separation of power a lot of the times. And this is a man pushing the edge of the envelope as far as i’m concerned, whether it’s the appointment clause, whether it’s his unilateral action on immigration, whether it’s trashing the commerce clause and the tax clauses under Obamacare. Now they’re talking about executive orders on the Second Amendment. They’ve issued regulations on First Amendment attacking religious liberty. This notion that he might be able to lift the debt ceiling, you know, unilaterally under the Fourteenth Amendment.

What the hell is this? He was elected president. Congratulations. This guy makes Richard Nixon look like a man who followed the law all the time. I think we have an imperial president, he sounds imperial, he’s arrogant as hell and I’m furious about this and I’m going to tell you why. We are a magnificent country. We don’t need to be turned upside down. We don’t need to run from crisis to crisis to crisis. He’s bankrupting this country.

He said we’ve had a discussion about the debt. When did we have a discussion about the debt? We’ve had a debate about taxes. The man’s never around to have a discussion about anything. So, yes, he causes me to be furious when I watch and listen to him. (FOX News Channel’s America Live with Megyn Kelly, January 14, 2013)

Lol. The next 4 years on this blog is going to be fantastic. Money cant buy the joy I get reading the angry comments here. That November victory will never fade away

HotAirLib on January 14, 2013 at 1:01 PM

You honestly think what is happening and having an incompetent, totally out of his league president is a good thing solely based on your entertainment value? Why do you personify everything ugly and bad in the liberal mind-set? How very narrow minded, selfish and myopic you are.

I’m very sad for you and your family members and hope you (and they) never are in the position to rely on this government you created for anything.

Final Obama presser of first term????

That’s my question.

Anyone yet photo shopped Napoleon’s eagles flanking Mr. Imperial?

Mark Levin is saying if Obama unilaterally raises the debt ceiling, there is no alternative to impeachment.

It seems talk of impeachment is beginning to bubble up into a boil.

Maybe election 2014 will be a referendum on it.

NOt me. I hope all the soft headed, soft socialist BO plants on this board get theirs. And it’s not anger. I just like seeing justice on earth.

As for angry; everyone in America knows (as fact) that leftists are angry, confused, bitter and full of white guilt(even if they aren’t white) at all times, even when they are winning. It’s a given. Leftists know they are always angry. Even the HAlib thing knows this. leftists are angry at mommy and daddy , their race, all the evil corporations that pollute the air, 200 years of war crimes done in the name of country and religion and blah blah History, God, the environment — it’s all a source of childish anger. Eat dinner with a group of libs and you’ll listen to them b*tch about the a bunch of fantastical enemies of mother earth, or made up oppressors of the 3rd world, or let’s-pretend racists running FOX news, millions of Aryans plotting in middle America with AR15 and m4s…angry, confused, CRAZY and bitter libs.

I’m in favor of impeaching Obama and his TelePrompter.

Mitt didn’t lay a glove on the clown.

Impeachment is the civilized way, followed by a nation of laws. 0bama has destroyed the rule of law. Therefore, I am not sure that a rule-of-law-based attempt to remove him from office could fly.

It may be that he has to be removed by the methods of older civilizations, and they are many.

“I’m a pretty friendly guy,” President Obama said near the end of his White House news conference Monday afternoon.

I almost choked on my dinner reading that. Friendly to whom? MSNBC for sure. Jay and Beyonce, yup. Hollywood celebrities, you bethcha. Anyone in Washington who happens to disagree with him? Not a chance. What a beligerant, petulant president he’s become.

I’m continually amazed at the ability to stand there and tell such demonstrably bold-faced lies, the ability of the media to be so unserious and uncurious, and the ability of so many of my fellow ‘citizens’ who routinely and sheepishly fall for this bullsh1t at every turn, and *believe* it.

God help us.

It won’t. He won’t allow it, nor will his zombie followers, nor will his cheerleaders in the media. The ‘rule of law’ is already dead, as is the Constitution. I’m glad, frankly, to hear Levin start actually saying it; he’s been reluctant to discuss action of *any* kind so far, it seems. Unfortunately, the action that will be required is as you state in your summary statement:

It may be that he has to be removed by the methods of older civilizations, and they are many.

The crust of this adolescent in demonizing members of Congress, particularly the opposition party, is maddening. For Obysmal to throw down the gauntlet over the debt ceiling when there has been no budget from Harry Reid’s Senate for years, when continuing resolutions keep escalating the debt, and when the first “stimulus” has been built into the baseline of spending is beyond the pale.

Now we learn that the WH will be late in offering a budget.

Where are the media in holding this clown accountable? Where is Congress? This deliberate deriliction of duty should be headline news daily.
