Obama ’06: Raising the debt ceiling means America can’t pay its bills; Obama ’13: Not raising the debt ceiling means America can’t pay its bills

posted at 1:52 pm on January 14, 2013 by Allahpundit

Everyone knows by now, I hope, that The One himself voted against raising the debt ceiling in 2006, back when he was eyeing a presidential run and realized he couldn’t get elected without pretending to be a dovish, pro-gun, fiscally responsible opponent of gay marriage. Not until Guy Benson tweeted about it today, though, did I realize how sharply his rhetoric at the time conflicted with today’s Democratic talking point du jour. Obama then, in “get our house in order” mode:

The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies. … Increasing America’s debt weakens us domestically and internationally. Leadership means that ‘the buck stops here. Instead, Washington is shifting the burden of bad choices today onto the backs of our children and grandchildren. America has a debt problem and a failure of leadership. Americans deserve better.

Jim DeMint couldn’t have said it any better. Seven years later, here’s the state of Hopenchange:

Obama said Congress would be “irresponsible” if it does not act quickly to raise the debt celing, putting the country back into another crisis. “Time is running short,” he said.

“While I’m willing to compromise and find common ground over how to reduce our deficit, America cannot afford another debate with this Congress over how to pay the bills they’ve already racked up,” Obama said. “To even entertain the idea of this happening, of America not paying its bills, is irresponsible. It’s absurd.”

“We are not a deadbeat nation,” he said of a country that owes $16 trillion and is staring at tens of trillions more in unfunded liabilities. The liberal retort to this is that, unlike the House GOP, Democrats circa 2006 had no intention of actually blocking a debt-ceiling hike. It was pure grandstanding; Obama himself later admitted as much. Okay, fine. Was the disapproving rhetoric about shifting the burden of bad choices onto future generations also grandstanding that shouldn’t be taken seriously now? Does Obama bear any responsibility for showing zero interest as president in bending his party towards the realities of entitlement reform? One of the drawbacks of the GOP’s debt-ceiling brinksmanship is that it lets the left pretend that they share the goal of serious deficit reduction and object merely to Republican tactics, as if the GOP was intent on hitting the ceiling out of some sort of nihilistic impulse or personal spite towards Obama. Hitting the ceiling is, to be sure, a desperate fiscal measure, but that’s because these are desperate times and there are way, way too many progressives who seem either not to know or not to care. When does Obama ’13 decide that Obama ’06 was right after all and gets to work on educating them?

Update: Case in point, Philip Klein notes that O’s explanation today of why S&P downgraded the U.S. last year was debt-ceiling brinksmanship. They did mention that at the time — but they mentioned something else too:

Republicans and Democrats have only been able to agree to relatively modest savings on discretionary spending while delegating to the Select Committee decisions on more comprehensive measures. It appears that for now, new revenues have dropped down on the menu of policy options. In addition, the plan envisions only minor policy changes on Medicare and little change in other entitlements, the containment of which we and most other independent observers regard as key to long-term fiscal sustainability.

We are not a deadbeat nation -Obama

Yes we are, real deadbeats try to pay their bills with bouncing checks and maxed out credit cards all the time!

Even Rush Limbaugh said a little while ago, (although maybe he was reading something), that we have to raise the debt ceiling to pay the bills, but that isn’t the only way, in fact it shouldn’t even be allowed. The way you pay the bills is you get a job, or ask for a raise, or get another job or—cut spending!

Only deadbeats demand that their credit card limit be raised so they can “pay their bills”, and when the credit card company refuses, only deadbeats blame the credit card company for their inability to pay their bills.

So this massive spendings on unemployment benefits, food-stamps and welfare frauds as well as the constantly

are NOT capable of long term fiscal sustainbility ?

“The problem is that the way Bush has done it in the last eight years is to take out a credit card from the Bank of China in the name of our children, driving up our national debt from $5 trillion from the first 42 presidents. No. 43 added $4 trillion by his lonesome. So we now have over $9 trillion of debt that we are going to have to pay back. $30,000 for every man, woman, and child. That’s irresponsible, that’s unpatriotic.”

- Democratic Presidential nominee, Barack Obama, 3 July 2008

The problem is that the way Obama has done it in the last 1,452 days is to take out a credit card from the Bank of China in the name of our children, driving up our national debt from $10,628,881,485,510.23 from the first 43 presidents. No. 44 added $5,803,810,644,000.61 by his lonesome. So we now have over $16,432,692,129,510.84 of debt that we are going to have to pay back. $53,008.68 for every man, woman, and child.

If President Obama called President George W Bush irresponsible and unpatriotic for presiding over a $4,901,104,747,205.59 increase in the national debt over 8 years, then what does he think we should call him for spending $5,803,810,644,000.61 in less than 4 years?

Irresponsible and unpatriotic’ sound too mild in comparison; perhaps, “treasonous” might be a more apt description of Mr Obama’s spending.

The GOP should remind the American people that when Obama says “pay our bills” he’s not really talking about “paying” in the same sense as you pay for things. When he says “pay” what he means is “borrow” from some one who has the money. Nothing is “paid” for by D.C. which is what that whole 16 trillion dollar debt thing means. Obama doesn’t want to “pay” for anything. He wants to borrow, and borrow, and borrow…

I think Rush’s comments were facetious and sarcastic as in addition to stating we have to raise the debt ceiling in order to pay the bills, he also continued to state that the Republicans were to blame for all this. At least that’s what the great divider POTUS was doing when speaking, he was dividing. I’m 48 years old and NEVER remember a POTUS that caused as much divisiveness or blamed “the other party” as much as this clown. Has he taken responsibility for ANYTHING that has occured on his watch? Just one thing? I don’t think so, unless it paints him in a good light, then it’s all him. I’m still for saying don’t raise the debt ceiling, forcing all of our debts to become due, with no money to pay them, then force the idiots in DC to cut some crap somewhere. This is the way those of us in the real world must live, so I don’t know what makes these jokers think they are immune to that sort of fiscal responibility.

Damn, he’s going to miss being the $6 trillion mark by less than I thought, and essentially by only the margin of the winddown of TARP.

For those who came in late, TARP expenses (which Teh SCOAMF voted for in one of his few votes as Senator) were mostly booked before GWB left office, while the revenues received have been mostly booked after Teh SCOAMF got in.

Steve Eggleston on January 14, 2013 at 2:16 PM

It’s one thing to have values and fall short of them. It’s another to change 180 degrees depending on whose ax is being gored. Obama has said one thing and done the opposite over and over again. Federal financing for elections, putting health care discussions on C-Span, and, of course, his attitude towards borrowing from future generations. Now it’s just fine. Before, a failure of leadership.

I did get a vibe today of Obama deflecting blame even more than usual. And that’s saying something given the amount of buck-passing the last 4 years. If you had been in a coma since 2008 and woke up and listened to him at the presser, you would think the GOP was running Congress and intentionally trying to destroy this economy the way he was talking. You’d also get the impression that we have almost no need to cut spending.

It’s truly chilling to hear because we have serious fiscal problems to resolve and the kind of remarks he made today all but affirm that nothing will be done until at least 2017. I don’t think we can survive another 4 years awaiting a serious person to replace him in the Oval Office.

The president opened his news conference with a statement by saying that a vote to increase the debt limit “does not authorize more spending. It simply allows the country to pay for spending that Congress has already agreed to. These are bills we’ve already racked up and we need to pay them.”

They are NOT already “racked up,” that is The Debt that is already racked up.

What IS Racked UP, is the promise of the sequester in exchange for the last debt hike. Obama owes to get those cuts in place, and to prioritize them so they hurt the country least. He has missed his fall deadline on shaping them.

Those are in exchange for the last debt negotiation, not the current one.

Obama has some reference to spending that congress has already agreed to…but not this congress, I think they have not agreed to any spending…only the House has put out a budget agreeing to a certain amount of spending…

For god’s sake, don’t you think a budget is in order?

The poor at the bottom of this debt pile, those these liar commie Democrats claim they wish to help in fact are the ones who will suffer the most due to these wild crazy ideas and actions of Obama and his commie Democrat Party Cult.

John F. Kennedy held a dinner in the white House for a group of the brightest minds in the nation at that time. He made this statement:”This is perhaps the assembly of the most intelligence ever to gather at one time in the White House with the exception of when Thomas Jefferson dined alone.”

President Barack Obama demanded on Monday that lawmakers raise the nation’s $16.4 trillion federal debt limit quickly, warning that “Social Security benefits and veterans’ checks will be delayed” if they don’t

Why does the scum scare old people and veterans?

Schadenfreude on January 14, 2013 at 2:55 PM

The president opened his news conference with a statement by saying that a vote to increase the debt limit “does not authorize more spending. It simply allows the country to pay for spending that Congress has already agreed to. These are bills we’ve already racked up and we need to pay them.”

Hmm, doesn’t even a low information voter understand that getting a credit card limit increase has nothing to do with the debt you’ve already ‘racked up’, but rather is a provision that simply lets you continue to spend even more?

holy f*ck that’s one dangerous, malevolent, lying piece of sh1t a$$hat sitting in the WH.

Yup.

And the Republicans need to answer back, “Because the Obama administration and the supporters of Obama in Congress chose to pay other obligations first. If the President so desired, he could choose to pay Social Security and the military first, but he chooses to pay himself, his staff, and the Federal bureaucracy instead.”

THAT would smack the idiot child down good and hard.

America cannot afford another debate with this Congress over how to pay the bills they’ve already racked up

More lies from the Indonesian Dog-Eater. Raising the debt ceiling has nothing to do with “pay[ing] the bills [we've] already racked up” (i.e. servicing the current debt) but with paying for the profligate and un-Constitutional spending to continue. I don’t know why the GOP or any conservatives let the Indonesian 84 IQ Imbecile keep getting away with these lies. Raising the debt ceiling has nothing to do with servicing the existing debt, which is easily done with current receipts. It’s only about continuing to spend ourselves into oblivion. Someone needs to shout “YOU LIE!!” at this miserable POS – even though Barky has the mathematical sophistication of a slow 8th grader and really has no idea what the heck he’s talking about, anyway.

Case in point, Philip Klein notes that O’s explanation today of why S&P downgraded the U.S. last year was debt-ceiling brinksmanship.

That’s incorrect. Barky demanded the downgrade when he went on TV just about every night and screamed that he would default on the debt if the debt ceiling wasn’t raised (since the Executive was in charge of deciding when checks will go out to whom and Barky would work it so that all the un-Constitutional spending was done and that nothing was left over for debt service). Barky screamed this idiocy on and on. Moody’s (Buffet’s shop) jumped on to help Barky in this threat, but eventually Moody’s couldn’t even keep a straight face about the lunacy and backed out, which is the point at which S+P stupidly jumped in and made the downgrade – which was pretty much meaningless, anyway.

Barky should have been impeached for his lies about the debt service and threatening to use the power of his office (and then some) to insure that America defaulted on our debt service if he didn’t get his way. The only real outcome of the debt ceiling not being raised would have been that the feral government would have had to shut down large, wasteful parts and that lots of programs would see no more money rolling in for a while. But the debt would have been serviced.

This all gets so tiring – especially that the GOP cowards and conservative talking heads refuse to hit back at Barky on his lies. How many lies is the affirmative action idiot allowed to spew without someone finally calling him the retarded liar that he is?

Ok Obama, why don’t you do that . . . I’d like to see how that plays out. Remember, you have the authority and responsibility to determine which bill are paid. Not paying the troops and retirees might not be your best option, but then again, go ahead and give it a try.
