McCain, Manchin agree — assault-weapons ban going nowhere

posted at 12:31 pm on January 14, 2013 by Ed Morrissey

CBS reports that opposition is “hardening” to the proposal to reinstate the so-called “assault weapons” ban in the Senate, and that the White House may be seeing the enthusiasm for its gun-control push ebbing away.  Yesterday, both Republican John McCain and Democrat Joe Manchin opposed the idea of reinstating the ban while on Sunday talk shows, although Manchin hedged his opposition a bit.  McCain, however, gave a flat-out “no” to Bob Schieffer’s questions on Face the Nation about whether the Dianne Feinstein bill would pass, and whether it should:

Manchin told Candy Crowley on CNN’s State of the Union he would oppose the bill if offered as “stand alone” legislation, arguing that the problem requires a much more comprehensive solution:

Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) said Sunday that a stand-alone ban on assault weapons would not win passage in Congress, and that the effort to curb mass shootings must include a broader discussion involving the entertainment industry and mental health issues.

“An assault weapons stand-alone ban on just guns alone, in the political reality we have, will not go anywhere. It has to be comprehensive,” Manchin said on CNN’s “State of the Union.”

This morning, Major Garrett toldCBS This Morning that the rush to legislate has started to decelerate, and that Biden’s failure to mention the ban as an option sent an interesting signal:

One day before Vice President Joe Biden is due to present his task force’s recommendations on how to deal with a culture stained with escalating gun violence, it’s growing increasingly dubious whether that report will include a plea to reinstate a ban on assault-style rifles. Even if it does, opposition is hardening on the right.

Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., said Sunday on “Face the Nation,” that he does not think an assault weapons ban can pass Congress, nor should it, according to McCain. “That’s not the right way to do it, ” he said.

And, some of President Obama’s Democratic allies — like West Virginia Sen. Joe Manchin, who sounded off on the urgency of gun control measures after Newtown — are now seeking a slow-moving Washington commission. …

Monday on “CBS This Morning,” Sen. Angus King, I-Maine, said it’s “interesting” that Biden did not mention an assault weapons ban in his various press moments last week while meeting with groups to approach the issue of gun violence. But, King qualified, “it may be in the recommendations ultimately.”

CBS also took note of Chuck Schumer’s call for retailers to voluntarily stop selling so-called “assault weapons” in advance of Congressional action, but … don’t expect them to pay much attention.

The left is so full of smart people they think banning guns when 99.9%+++ of people use them correctly. If you were to make other decisions to take rights away based on gender, race, or orientation what would they say?

assault-weapons ban going nowhere

Meh, it never was. Now, ammo may be an entirely different matter. If they can’t ban the guns, they may make sure gun owners either pay through the teeth for ammo through higher taxes and/or make it next to impossible to acquire.

As it is, the current run on guns and ammo is making it difficult for suppliers to keep up with demand.

It’s not going anywhere…..UNTIL the GOP agrees to attach it to a debt-ceiling increase.

They’ll give Obama an increase in the debt limit (probably unlimited) AND ban guns. It’ll be the cave of the century, and Boehner will probably cry but still agree to pass it. Final nail in the coffin.

OK, probably overly pessimistic…but just a couple years ago, we actually still believed that the GOP cared about the Constitution…didn’t we?

CBS also took note of Chuck Schumer’s call for retailers to voluntarily stop selling so-called “assault weapons” in advance of Congressional action, but … don’t expect them to pay much attention.

A few points. First, even in quotes we are not really talking about “assault weapons” to keep using the term is ceding points to the enemy. These are not even assault-like weapons. They are guns that look scary to people who get degrees in political science or womens’ studies so they must be banned as “assault” weapons.

Secondly, Schumer’s call for retailers to voluntarily stop selling weapons until Congress can ban them is about as anti-Second Amendment as you can get. When do the impeachment hearings begin?

Finally, this is an issue that is not clearly partisan but divides in some interesting directions. Which is why whatever Congress thinks it can do is probably about half of what it can actually accomplish. There may be some room to nibble at the symbolic banning of high-capacity clips (whatever the hell that is) or token reform of background checks. But, until Congress is willing to impede private sales of guns and other circumstances that thwart ideas of massive data bases, registries, and background investigations…. not much is going to change.

It must be disappointing to the radical left including the Brady Group and Gabbie Giffords to stand up on those 20 tiny caskets and find that they are nothing of ineffectual ghouls who did not drive the discussion in areas where there might be legitimate debate (such as mental health access) instead of thinking one horrific incident was going to net them abolition of the Second Amendment.

With so many having to front-load their disposable income purchases on firearms and ammo, that leaves less money for green cars and energy efficient upgrades…

I know that’s not the case – I assume most buying guns likely aren’t in the Algore green crowd, but the thought still makes me smile.

Former Pa. Gov.: The ‘Good Thing’ About Newtown Is That it Was ‘So Horrific,’ Gun Control Advocates Have Been ‘Galvanized’

Former Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell during a Friday broadcast of MSNBC’s “Now With Alex Wagner” explained why he thinks it’s a “good thing” that the shooting spree in Newtown, Conn., that left 26 people dead, including 20 children, was “so horrific.”

Rendell tells the truth for the rest of the Oppressive-Left.

It should be clearly evident that these Gun Grabbing Ghouls only see the children killed in these mass murders as mere political pawns for their socialist national agenda.

They are beyond disgusting.

NY Has Tentative Deal on Gun Control: AP
http://www.nbcnewyork.com/news/local/Gun-Control-Assault-Weapons-Ban-Magazines-Limit-Cuomo-NY-186794151.html

The tentative agreement would further restrict New York’s ban on assault weapons and limit the size of magazines to seven bullets, rather than the current 10.

Should there be any doubt that this what the nation’s oppressives would like to do everywhere?

They start out restricting to 10 rounds, then just as they desire in Andrew ‘Gun Confiscation’ Cuomo’s NY – restrict it down further to 7 then 5 then 3 then..

Texyank on January 14, 2013 at 1:06 PM

Supposedly there’s a tentative agreement in the NY legislature about bans of certain rifles (which are largely already banned) and magazines of no more than seven rounds. Tell me–is there such thing as a 7-round mag for a modern 9mm pistol that can’t be made to take up to 18? And who has ever seen a 7-round mag for an AR-15? The smallest I ever saw was a twenty.

The reality is that “assault weapons” are nothing more than “neat looking semiautomatic guns. The Left runs into the referenced reality in trying to ban these because you would also catch both pump and semi-automatic shotguns, six shooters and even most .22 cal guns all because they “look” menacing.

The Left would be happy in denying citizens possessing anything that fires a projectile, including slingshots and bows, sharp bladed and pointy objects and handled blunt objects (baseball bats, hammers, etc.)if they could find ways to ban sale, distribution and ownership of them, for our own safety and well being of course. They just have to look out for our best interests, since we are incapable ourselves.

Aint that the truth. 2 weeks ago one of our local dealers had dozens of AK-47s and almost as many AR-15 types. As of this past Friday – NOTHING left – and I mean NOTHING. He said he may get more in tomorrow.
I’m looking to add one of those scary lookin Rusian type assault rifles to my collection, but I didn’t buy the AK when I wanted to and there were a bunch available a few weeks ago.
I saw a relevant sign at another local shop – “I should have bought it when I saw it”.

dentarthurdent on January 14, 2013 at 3:00 PM

Obama has already implemented a ban on so-called assault weapons.

The one I really, really, really want has been on back order since September!!!

… and the company that makes the custom holster I wish to purchase isn’t taking any more new orders for the foreseeable future in order to get caught up on the log jam of back orders!!!

Now, what is that called? Oh ya, the law of unintended consequences.

Silly liberals, LEGAL guns are for law abiding, responsible conservatives.

I was happy to see Sportsman’s Warehouse finally put a 3 box limit on each type of ammo last week. Prior to that, 1 or 2 guys would be first in line when they brought out a pallet and grab every case of .223, 5.56 and 7.62. Then those guys would be at the next gun show reselling the ammo for twice as much. At least now other people can get some at a reasonable price. I haven’t even fired a shot with my new AR-15 because I couldn’t get ammo for the first 3 weeks I had it.
