Bill Clinton’s new gig: Hollywood awards show presenter, of course

posted at 10:31 am on January 14, 2013 by Allahpundit

Alternate headline: “Unctuous man finds true calling.” I felt sorry for him when I saw this last night, partly because he doesn’t look well — that suit and tie seem too big — and partly because, whatever you think of him, it’s too bad to see the office reduced to a form of super-celebrity. (Although in fairness, thanks to The One, we’re well down that path already.) I’m not sure why he did it. Did his pal Spielberg talk him into it to goose pre-Oscar buzz for “Lincoln,” because the two of them inexplicably still need more personal validation at this point in their careers? Or did he just want to stare out at a room of A-list liberals applauding rapturously for him? I almost wish they had Jack Nicholson walk out there with him to exchange some inane comic banter, just two randy ol’ alpha males of Hollywood royalty sending a thrill through the crowd by their mere presence. Bleh.

It’s nice to know at least that Obama has a career track ahead of him after 2016. Exit question: Is there more than meets the eye to this bit of stuntcasting? The sonorous blather about compromise is a nice talking point for Democrats ahead of the debt-ceiling standoff, even as they categorically refuse to compromise on meaningful spending cuts and entitlement reform.

I figured if there was more than meets the eye to this, it was to set him and Hillary up for running in 2016. Shoot, Amy Poehler even joked about that after Bubba’s appearance.

They don’t have a choice. The only other living Democrat ex-President is Jimmy Carter. Like they’re gonna drag his carcass out there? CW on January 14, 2013 at 10:56 AM

What a pathetic joke that was.

You all are missing the point of this appearance. The Washington/Hollywood axis are absolutely desperate to pump up the very mediocre and trite “Lincoln.” This movie is nothing short of a propaganda film. It was designed to get Americans to believe that we have the new Lincoln in the White House now, we have a morally bankrupt Congress just like Lincoln did, and that the current President thus has the duty to bypass it and do whatever is necessary to bring about “justice.”

So they brought in the popular former President to introduce the film, had him yammer about a President using foul means to justify a noble end, and laughably suggest that this President has the ability and interest in compromise as Lincoln did. This was a very, very political moment in a night that was almost completely political.

It was obvious, ridiculous, and disgraceful. And that is without even mentioning the hypocrisy of the most immoral man ever to sit in the Oval Office.

The saving grace was that the HFPA had the sense to not give any awards to this mediocre movie except for the acting award for Daniel Day-Lewis. But the propaganda was probably aimed at the Oscar voters anyway.

I appreciate and respect your numbers – but here is my observation. Young people are becoming strongly libertarian – they turn away from anyone telling them what to do – or when to do it – that are – like every generation of young people – independent. The GOP is made to appear like a preachy know it all bunch of old folk – that may not be real – but it is perception.

Abortion is a personal choice – we have to work the choice side of the equation – and not preach morality as much. The wonder of life is hard to argue when it is seen in a loving light – and not by calling people killers – etc.

Our messaging sucks on abortion – and there is plenty we can do to win hearts and minds – but it cannot come from anger.

I have a solution for Republicans winning the Presidential elections next time and it does not involve at all changing their position on social issue or running away from social issues… It involve at total and ruthless war against the Welfare State… It about making the Welfare Queen the face of the democrat party… Nothing would rile up the producers more showing them how much of theit hard earned money is going toward supporting the Welfare State and its parasites…

I completely hate these people. I was in a waiting room last night while the Golden Globes were running. I didn’t look, just listened. What stupid, vain self-congratulatory children. I wasn’t prepared for the obviousness of it. The unself-aware back-patting and trumpery around “Game Change,” a multi-million dollar Stalinist hit job by Hollywood elites on a single American woman, was disgusting. This is what “liberalism” has come to — let’s revel in our oh-so-important destruction of a human being (a simultaneously irrelevant but apparently very threatening human being).

rrpjr on January 14, 2013 at 1:11 PM

Understand the group involved:

Weinstein’s financially partnered with Ron Burkle, “best friend” of Clinton’s…Burkle owns Ralph’s supermarket chain and is worth billions, among other things, and is, like Weinstein (and Clinton), very big funder to DNC (and associated unions). Weinstein generally owns the foreign press mess called the Golden Globes and it’s an event orchestrated to respond to monies paid them (as in, corrupt as to “award” process and very much a Leftwing, DNC/DLC controlled event).

It’s as if Clinton HAD to appear, his ego, after all, couldn’t stand not being highly visible. “Can’t be ignored!”

And despite now-director Ben Affleck doing a great job directing ARGO, it is almost certainly a DNC/DLC push to craft public opinion to accommodate and echo Obama’s tactics at present (not that the anti-Iran message involved is wrong, I just don’t think it’s realistic but is what Obama/Clinton et al want the public to believe about their position).

Lourdes on January 14, 2013 at 1:28 PM

And EVEN THIS from Liberal Nikke Finke:

The Golden Globes are a completely meaningless award show bestowed by a scandal-riddled organization on a network desperate for ratings. I just learned that Tina and Amy have prepared a funny bit about the HFPA. Hopefully, they won’t be nice. Problem is, they’re both nominated tonight. I say: bring it on, girls, even if Hollywood and the HFPA will hate you later.

Deadline is, only for informational purposes, covering the 2013 Golden Globes. I refuse to treat them with any seriousness. And if you don’t want that, then for crissakes stop reading me. I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: the Golden Globes have zero integrity. Studios and networks lavishly lobby the HFPA and almost always score nominations. Actors win in direct correlation to their glamour quotient. By splitting dramas and comedies/musicals, and including movie and television categories on the same night, more star wattage gooses NBC’s Nielsens. And even though the entire entertainment industry ridicules the awards, it props them up because they’re a useful marketing tool for the studios and networks. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association gave multiple nominations to Oscar frontrunners like Argo, Life Of Pi, Lincoln, Zero Dark Thirty, Les Miserables and Silver Linings Playbook as well as major impetus to the late-breaking hopes of Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained. The Weinstein Company led with 15 nominations because Harvey really knows how to schmooze these moochers.

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association isn’t as advertised. It’s actually a small motley group of 85 mostly freelancers who won’t grant membership to the real foreign journalists at the prestige media outlets across the world.

I think what you’ve written there is simply an affirmation that the Left’s screwy meme that the GOP/Right is “a bunch of old white men” has become, as to the “youth” you believe you speak for, adopted as reality, while instead, it’s simply gullible people (“youth” and more) who believe what they’re told to believe.
