Open thread: Sunday morning talking heads

posted at 8:01 am on January 13, 2013 by Allahpundit

Smart Hagel spin from the White House this morning as the pope of “reasonableness,” a.k.a. fellow Democrat-supporting Republican Colin Powell, emerges to bless the nomination as being officially reasonable. Meanwhile, former Hagel ally turned adversary John McCain will hit “Face the Nation” to explain the end of the bromance and how it really, totally isn’t mainly just a grudge over Hagel’s refusal to endorse him in 2008.

Elsewhere this morning, whole lotta gun blather. Watching Joe Manchin squirm over how red a red-state Democrat he is should prove somewhat amusing. The line-up via National Journal:

Meet the Press hosts former Secretary of State Colin Powell, Newark Mayor Cory Booker and former Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour

Face the Nation hosts Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., Ret. Gen. Stanley McChrystal, Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa

This Week hosts Sen. Jack Reed, D-R.I., Sen. Bob Corker, R-Tenn., Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va. and former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman

Fox News Sunday hosts Sen. Kelly Ayotte, R-N.H., Sen. Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn., Center for American Progress President Neera Tanden and Gun Owners of America Executive Director Larry Pratt

State of the Union hosts NRA President David Keene, Connecticut Gov. Dan Malloy, Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman, Rep. Elijah Cummings, D-Md., and Rep. Marsha Blackburn, R-Tenn.

President Obama plans to push Congress on ambitious immigration overhaul, senior officials say – @nytimes

WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama plans to push Congress to move quickly in the coming months on an ambitious overhaul of the immigration system that would include a path to citizenship for most of the 11 million illegal immigrants in the country, senior administration officials and lawmakers said last week.

Obama and Senate Democrats will propose the changes in one comprehensive bill, the officials said, resisting efforts by some Republicans to break the overhaul into smaller pieces — separately addressing young illegal immigrants, migrant farmworkers or highly skilled foreigners — that might be easier for reluctant members of their party to accept.(More…)

in what way is Colin Powell a Republican? Has he ever supported any Republican for office? Has he ever endorsed or supported any remotely conservative policies?

The guy is a Democrat. he is not a RINO, he’s a Democrat plain and simple. A democrat who happened to have served in Republican administrations and was in the military.

Aaron Swartz committed suicide Friday in New York. He was 26 years old.

When he was 14 years old, Aaron helped develop the RSS standard; he went on to found Infogami, which became part of Reddit. But more than anything Aaron was a coder with a conscience: a tireless and talented hacker who poured his energy into issues like network neutrality, copyright reform and information freedom. Among countless causes, he worked with Larry Lessig at the launch of the Creative Commons, architected the Internet Archive’s free public catalog of books, OpenLibrary.org, and in 2010 founded Demand Progress, a non-profit group that helped drive successful grassroots opposition to SOPA last year.(More…)

I have been in my super, super secret hawkdriver super secret compound building a super secret, er, garage all week. Only getting the news on the radio driving back and forth from Lowe’s getting more super secret 2x4s.

Listened to Jerry Riviera with guests from both sides of the gun debate. Classic. The liberal interrupted the well mannered pro-2nd speaker without mercy. The gentleman was being asked point blank by both the lib and Jerry, (I repeat myself) as to whether he thought a background check should be used for all weapons sales. He was trying to qualify his comment by saying he would if there weren’t always so many false positives in background investigations by the government to approve a purchase. He “tried” to give the example of how Ted Kennedy was on a no-fly list for a very long time. The lib just kept taking over him saying, “See he won’t answer. If I knew you were having him I wouldn’t have come on.”

The time is ripe to get back in the face of liberals. No more mild manners and penny loafer rebellions from meek Conservatives. We will never win a PC contest because Political Correctness is in it’s very design was meant to neuter our points and opinions and give an advantage to liberals in debate and politics.

I did not lose my temper listening to the lib on the radio, but back on the super secret compound, the super secret nails were getting just wore out.

I see no reason why any Conservative would want to go on one of these shows. He is there only to make the host and his fellow libs look good, to seem like they hold the moral high ground. They don’t want him to talk; the lib concept of a dialogue on any issue is, “You shit up, I talk, and you listen.”

It’s all so pointless, which is why I avoid conversation with libs on most everything, especially guns. The time for talk is done, and I don’t care what laws they pass. Any ‘new’ ones will be a rehash of the older failed ones, or a restatement of those already on the books that haven’t curtailed crime.

Private gun owners have curtailed crime far more than any laws liberals dreamed up, and most times the law-abiding don’t needed to open fire.Plus, the fact that David Gregory won’t be prosecuted for a flagrant and open violation of a ‘strict’ gun law tells me I don’t need to obey, either. I simply need to be quiet about it, is all.

Still, it’s important for conservatives to appear on these shows and to be confrontational when they do. Breitbart’s in-your-face style of combatting demagogues on the left is effective because it helps you break through the left’s debate framing and expose the silliness or malevolence of their positions.

These smug libs think they’ll get what they want just because they want it. Or, if the stuff hits the fan they’ll win handily. Such narrow vision!

They are ignoring the people just waiting in the wings to cause mayhem, people with no political side to their wishes. Some want personal payback; some are dying to do things but won’t unless society breaks down. Others just hate American society and are itching for a chance to add their own brand of hurt. The only question is how many are out there with those desires and not even close family members might know it.

Nothing is as tidy or linear as smug libs in their gated communities like to think.

Indicted businessman: Utah A.G. tied to alleged scheme

Jeremy Johnson says new A.G. brokered attempt to derail federal investigation.

Embattled St. George businessman Jeremy Johnson says new Utah Attorney General John Swallow helped broker a deal in 2010 in which Johnson believed he was

(to pay Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid $600,000 to make a federal investigation into Johnson’s company go away.)

But when the federal government filed a lawsuit Johnson thought he had paid to quash, he demanded Swallow return some of the $250,000 initial payment. Then, just days before the Nov. 6 election, Johnson engaged in a frenetic but unsuccessful effort to get Swallow to drop out of the race, saying information about what Johnson called a “bribe” would come out and force the Republican’s resignation if he became attorney general.(More…)

I think the idea is to make Congress juggle the agenda. Barry is a community organizer at heart. Never really gave up the job. He is not really in this to solve a problem but to always mainatin some level of chaos, large or small. The public has chosen to respond to him the way he wishes. Too bad, but I wouldn’t put up with a petulant six year old for this long. I don’t know why we allow the same behavior from a grown man.

DaveDief on January 13, 2013 at 9:15 AM

It’s time we learned that the so-called “Moderator” or “Journalist”, if you will, is NOT a mere messenger or facilitator. They’re a combatant!
Job#1 has to be to verbally slap the moderator into a state of intimidated neutrality. Absent that, the entire experience is a complete waste of time.
Job#2 is to verbally slap the opposition into a state of intimidated civility. Absent that, the entire experience is a pointless screaming match.
None of these jobs will ever be achieved by a good defense. We win by making the other side defend themselves.
The word is….ATTACK!…ATTACK!…ATTACK!…and after that ATTACK AGAIN!

TxAnn56 on January 13, 2013 at 9:17 AM

Off to services here. But more seriously before I head out …

Let’s have our facts straight and not be afraid to make out points. I look back to and cite the second debate. Romney had everyone (in even the entire liberal world) admitting that he cleaned obama’s clock in the first debate, sorry, but pulling his punches on Benghazi. IMHO, being bolder would have put the clown away for good.

I concede the clown had a ton of moderator help, but Romney didn’t let that stop him in the first. And he won, handily. To the point Al Gore had to make excuses as to the thin air in Denver. (God forbid obama has to make a decision on AF1 which is pressurized to 8-10K while cruising).

I don’t think we’ll ever change a liberal’s opinion on anything. I just want to make them back down from asserting it and trying to impose their control over us.

In all my live, my government has never been this oppressive over one side of the political spectrum. I remember the “Republican Revolution” in the nineties. There was a simple point Newt was considering about allowing prayer in school again. With whatever you think about it, it was a minor thing. He was excoriated by both sides for overplaying the momentum and overreaching our newly won political clout. Now, we have a president that is fully supported by his side for arbitrarily raising the debt ceiling and making recess appointments. Now, we talk about a president seriously considering an executive order to change the Constitution and depriving us of our 2nd rights? An executive order that really should be the subject of a Constitutional Convention?

So many times, I think we beat ourselves by buying the crap the media portrays us as.

Fight back and debate them like they debate us. You’re not fighting you change their opinion. You’re fighting to preserve what you still have, what you might be able to demand back.

Fight.

I’ve been saying this about ‘the West’ vs. ‘the Islamists’ for a couple of decades now. We keep expecting them to behave as civilized people do, failing to understand why they don’t behave as civilized people do, and… well, they’re not civilized, and the sooner we realize the mindset of the people trying to kill us the sooner we might actually begin handling it correctly.

Same with libs.

“Arguing shows”
That’s what my husband calls them. I used to watch our local “Georgia Gang” every Sunday morning but can’t even tolerate it anymore due to the discord and race arguments. Occasionally catch panel at end of Fox News Sunday but too many dems and squishy rhinos on there now.

Colin Powell. Just another example of the lamestream in cahoots with Barky to divide the check-pants loafer wearing repubs by showing Powell as a “reasonable voice” among those nasty Tea partiers.

Oh well. Waiting for 1:00pm. Go Falcons.

Brat on January 13, 2013 at 9:48 AM

The Republican role? You are kidding, Bob Woodward. It’s to oppose liberals and Democrats. What a stupid question!

ExpressoBold on January 13, 2013 at 9:50 AM

Thomas Sowell said it best. When it’s the wimps vs the barbarians, the barbarians are going to win. The aggressor sets the rules. We keep ignoring that. It doesn’t work on the battlefield and it doesn’t work in politics or anywhere else.

The Democrats don’t really even care about gun control. It is just a means to their ends of more power. What they are after is power. Unchallenged and unlimited power. The Republicans don’t seem to understand that. That is why we lose.

JellyToast on January 13, 2013 at 8:34 AM

Our fellow “conservatives” seem to think that the Democrats play by the same rules we do……I don’t know how many more 2x4s across the head conservatives are going to need to wake them up and snap out of it.
No more compromising….no more Mr nice guy. imho.

tencole on January 13, 2013 at 9:28 AM

“Gun control” has nothing to do with safety, crime, or children. It’s not about guns; it’s all about control.

When he was 14 years old, Aaron helped develop the RSS standard; he went on to found Infogami, which became part of Reddit.

Fallon on January 13, 2013 at 10:08 AM

Just watched the exchanges of Larry Platt and Neera Tanden on gun control. Depressing. If the gun lobby refuses to consider reform/improvement of background checks for heaven’s sake, they will impair their need to be heard on more serious issues. The “never give an inch” strategy will not work for the NRA, and, more importantly, will not work for America. When Platt criticized Justice Scalia for making a reasonable observation about the 2nd Amendment: ‘it is not absolute’, I rolled my eyes and murmured, “idiot”.
Citizens need to be able to defend themselves and their children in a violence crazed culture that puts liberty before insanity, and allows the widespread sale of military grade weapons that have nothing to do with hunting and gathering. Those whose interest in the 2nd Amendment is the absolute right to collect weaponry for some future civil war against our own government, sound just as dumb as progressive liberals who refuse to see that in today’s American society, the safest places are those where adults can protect their children with firearms.

It’s not his brain he’s lost. It was his soul. All of these people.
It’s not a mental illness; it’s a spiritual one. And until we recognize that, we’re going to fight it ineffectively.

It’s a tactic to dilute the energies of the opposition. He isn’t doing it alone. He has the entire msm to aid and deflect with made up “important” side issues.
It’s worked for him so far.

There is a lesson to be learned about “moderate” Republicans from Colin Powell and now currently Chris Christie.

At some point for every “moderate” there will come a point when the press and their own aids will point out to these guys how “popular” they could be by turning on the Republican base and capturing the “middle”. I would even say when O’Reilly’s ratings peaked he started out Obama’s term trying to soft pedal Obama as a not a bad guy and still continue’s to insist he is the voice of “the folks”

The Colin Powell formula will be repeated ad nauseum and we will get some other “candidate” that once has a secure following in the base will start to betray us to the left. It never ends in politics.

Exactly! If you had to state what our biggest need is for 2014 and 2016 its political strategists. How to counter Axelrod,Plouffe, Jarrett the rest. How to counter the ability to take a lie/half truth, vette it, focus test it, give it to the dbm who sell it and then claim its true.
Until we counter all that we may not win too many elections.

pilamaye on January 13, 2013 at 8:24 AM

The libs and LSM need him to parade around on shows and the media to portray as a ‘Republican’ who (in their minds) can’t be marginalized or discounted because of his military service. Apparently, Powell is fine with being used like this.

crosshugger on January 13, 2013 at 5:31 PM

Colin Powell should be disregarded. He rose in life courtesy the Republicans, but he cannot be considered a Republican having struck out. What do I mean by that?

Strike One: Powell betrayed President GW Bush by not telling President GW Bush that Powell’s man at the State Department, Richard Armitage, was the one who told Bob Novak about Valerie Plame being at the CIA and instead let GW Bush and Cheney get fried politically and Scooter Libby get prosecuted.

Strike Two: Powell turned his back on his “friend” John McCain and supported Obama for President, giving the country the impression that Obama could be a competent Commander in Chief (but see Benghazi).

Strike Three: after Obama’s election, Powell called for higher taxes and more Government spending.

So, on top of it all, Powell now supports Obama’s Cabinet picks who happen to be for cutting defense spending and being adverse to Israel. Here is a Bronx jeer for Colin Powell.

Phil Byler on January 13, 2013 at 7:53 PM
