The basic qualifier is that it must open in at least NY or L.A. by Christmas or the end of the calendar year to be nominated. If it didn’t or wasn’t released in any of those markets before going “wide,” it would not be eligible.

It could still be a “cause” movie in next year’s list, but having opened to a yawn this early in 2013, it doesn’t seem likely to be remembered come next year’s nomination cycle.

Variety headline I’d like to see:

“Latest from Damon, star of ‘We Bought A Zoo,’ Buys the Farm at Box Office”

Perfectly rational when you remember the that fundamental assumption of Liberalism is a sneering disdain for the average person. In their mind, if the “Great Unwashed” loved it, it must be utterly devoid of artistic merit or intellectual value.
Of course you must also understand that “artistic merit” and “intellectual value” are the sole property of these self appointed elites. After all, if they didn’t safeguard us from our peasant ways, who would?

Haven’t watched or cared about the oscars since SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE beat out SAVING PVT RYAN for best picture.

BUT SPR is on TV at least twice a year sometimes more.

Saw Zero Dark Thirty last evening. One of the worst movies I have ever seen. I kept hoping it would be over soon throughout the movie.

Hmmm. I saw it today with a packed theater and I thought it was an excellent movie. And fortunately, basically Obama-free. And when he was onscreen in the background doing a 60-Minutes interview, he was whining about the interrogation that was putting the pieces together.

I can see it now in the headlines….when asked about being snubbed for an Oscar, Mr. Damon was quoted as saying “I did not make this movie to win an Oscar. What I don’t understand is why time-after-time conservative movies do well at the box office but never are even in contention for leftist awards like the Oscars. It’s supposed to be about the “best” and yet the Academy limits themselves to a few pathetic but politically correct options.
