Harry Reid to Obama: Please ignore Congress and raise the debt ceiling on your own
posted at 4:49 pm on January 11, 2013 by Allahpundit
Let’s set the stage with a quote from January 2009, back when these partisan frauds were still high on their Bush-era image as a counterweight to the “unitary executive.” What do you think, Majority Leader Reid? Is it time to roll over for the new Democratic president?
Reid stated, “I don’t believe in the executive power trumping everything… I believe in our Constitution, three separate but equal branches of government.”
“If Obama steps over the bounds, I will tell him. … I do not work for Barack Obama. I work with him,” he said.
Four years later, with the left having rubber-stamped a military intervention in Libya without congressional sanction and the brightest lights of liberal punditry now reduced to mumbling about trillion-dollar coins, Reid decides that executive power does in fact trump everything after all:
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and other top Democrats are putting new pressure on the White House to circumvent Congress to boost the nation’s debt ceiling if no bipartisan agreement can be reached.
In a strongly worded letter to President Barack Obama obtained by POLITICO, Reid and his leadership team argue that failing to raise the $16.4 trillion debt ceiling would threaten the full faith and credit of the United States. Reid and Sens. Dick Durbin, Chuck Schumer and Patty Murray asserted that Obama “must make clear that you will never allow our nation’s economy and reputation to be held hostage.”
“In the event that Republicans make good on their threat by failing to act, or by moving unilaterally to pass a debt limit extension only as part of an unbalanced or unreasonable legislation, we believe you must be willing to take any lawful steps to ensure that America does not break its promises and trigger a global economic crisis — without congressional approval, if necessary,” the Friday letter to Obama says.
Reid and Pelosi each favor having Obama raise the debt ceiling unilaterally under the 14th Amendment, a move that’s more legally dubious than the trillion-dollar coin, so pay no mind to his caveat in the excerpt about “lawful steps.” He doesn’t care about the law. Obama could issue a decree stating that he’s canceling the debt ceiling on grounds that “Article II is awesome” and Reid would defend it as within the executive’s purview. The idea of “checks and balances” is that each branch will restrain the others by competing vigorously with them for power; what you’re seeing here is the opposite, an attempt by the leadership of the Senate to enlarge the power of the presidency at its own expense. Rather than protect Congress’s prerogatives and trust voters to punish House Republicans if they overreach, they’re encouraging a sort of very limited coup. The language, about the president needing to act without the legislature’s approval to avert a global crisis, barely even tries to pretend otherwise. Good thing Reid “doesn’t work for Obama;” imagine how far he’d be willing to go if he did. Exit quotation from a Senate Democratic aide who knows a looming political disaster when he sees one: “What better symbol of out-of-control government spending could you have than a trillion dollar coin?”
Update: Via Guy Benson, to repeat: The guy’s a complete partisan fraud. If his caucus wasn’t filled with partisan frauds too, today’s letter would be reason enough to replace him.
Update: Ramesh Ponnuru makes an excellent point. If you read the Reid excerpt closely, he’s not saying Obama should raise the debt ceiling unilaterally only if the House fails to act; he’s saying O should do it even if the House passes a bill that Obama doesn’t like, i.e. one that’s heavy on cuts and light (or nonexistent) on new revenue. The point about needing to act to prevent a global crisis is a total lie. What they really want to prevent is a package to raise the ceiling that undermines the Democratic agenda. Again: Complete. Partisan. Fraud.

Way to abdicate your office, Harry! Didn’t he take an oath to uphold the Constitution? Where does that give the President the executive power to do what he’s advocating? Impeach him.

Why not have the House impeach him? Sure, it will fail in the Senate. But, so what. Clinton wasn’t prosecuted in the Senate either, but he still has it hanging around his neck. Go for it.

Seriously sesquibator,, please explain to me why progressives are willing to go to such lenghts to spend what they are spending. What’s the end goal that makes it worth trillion dollar coins, abusing the 14th amendment, or ignoring the Constitution altogether? There must be some plan to make it worth all that, huh?

You can’t fix stupid and the whole country has gone stupid. Anyone who still believes political solutions will save our country hasn’t been paying attention.

It’s Friday Night. Time to bait some questions.
Does this show an admission that Congress has become so convoluted with tack-ons, add-ons, inclusions and insertions, that it can no longer functions as a legislative body?
Should we be distrustful of Obama for working outside of the Congress?
Should we expect his work in spite of the Congress.

Pravda and Izvestia have allowed the Democrats to scam the American public for 3 years. (I say 3 years because they passed a budget 4 years ago). By refusing the pass a budget, they get to keep the bloated spending they put on the books 4 years ago and with automatic increases for inflation (even if there is none). This couldn’t happen with a Republican House and the majorities they had 2 years ago, so they refused to pass a budget and brought up bills to raise the debt limit and pass continuing resolutions without the budget being touched.
Our illustrious free press and the Republican Party have allowed them to get away with it. Of course, you’ve heard Republicans put out some token comment about the Senate not passing a budget and yes, the House has sent them budgets. All of this is just CYA stuff to make it look like they’re trying. What they needed to do ((and they needed to do it 2 years ago) was refuse to sign a CR without a budget. PERIOD.
The press, I can’t even get into how disappointed I am that they’ve allowed themselves to become included as a political organ of the Democratic Party. When I was a kid, I used to take pride, when hearing stories about how Pravda was lying to the Soviet people, that I had a free press that would always tell us the truth and they didn’t trust any politician. I always felt our press was out there for US. I believe, at one time, that was true. I also believe our schools of journalism have been taken over by left-wing nuts that no longer honor the responsibilities inherent in a truly free press.
The Republicans need to deal with this and do it soon. The arguments coming up are way to important, to the health of our country, to allow this disinformation to continue.

As you mentioned, the GOP has not done anything and in fact enabled the unconstitutional actions of the Senate not passing a budget by signing CRs. Don’t hold your breath waiting for the GOP, it ain’t gonna happen!
If we dismiss Dirty Harry’s “legal” statement, then we have to believe Dirty Harry wants to see Owebama impeached since he is advocating that Owe ignore the US Constitution. The Constitution does not allow Owe to spend as he wishes in a crisis. The Constitution merely allows to pay the bills. This would mean that govt would have to stop all its spending programs outside of the Military and paying the bills. It certainly doesn’t mean to keep spending like a drunken sailor.

Ah, I see the little liar has returned.
Now watch what happens when a brainwashed Obama supporter is confronted with facts from before 2008.
That would include Barack Liar Obama.
So Obama’s screaming and squealing and lies about “obstructionism” only show what a hypocrite he is, and what a hypocrite his entire Party is.
So here’s your choice, pathetic sesquipedalian; either state your Barack Obama and your Obama Party are guilty of treason for obstructing Bush (as you scream that any criticism of Obama is treason), or acknowledge that you are a lying hypocrite.

Anybody see this claim linking Reid to a bribery scheme? I’m sure it will roll off him like teflon, but I have a sneaking suspicion it’s true, As just as true about the Republican AG of Utah who was also said to be involved.

It’s about time for someone to arrest Obama for Treason.

So What? No one is going to do anything about it. Congress has become totally dysfunctional and corrupted. Nothing can be or ever will be done to correct it. Game over we lost our country. We gave it to these boot licking cowards elected to represent us, not knowing that they never had any intentions of doing anything but for themselves. Take the “Trillion Dollar Coin”. Mike Castle, added it a bill to get the treasury to mint lower value coins for collectors. Nice innocent idea. Then those in charge today say they can mint a trillion dollar coin to circumvent the debt ceiling. Even if they do not do this just the fact that they think about it is corruption of our Democratic principals. Get over it all either leave the country and find a new one or start the revolution and over through of this corrupt system we allowed to be created.
Wait! Maybe there is something else that can still be done. Get some people in there with some guts. Require a budget be passed each and every year. All bills to be “CLEAN” and “FREE” of superfluous attachments. Make each and every Congressman stand and be accounted for their vote, by name. Hold “ALL” people in Government accountable for their action. Cut without recourse all dead wood.

I would not qualify for serves in the Congress.
1. In 1965 at the age of 21 I enlisted in the Army. They made me a cook.
2. After a year they tested me and fount out that I was dumb enough to be a 2Lt. Of to Officer Candidate School. I did so poorly they kept me on as a tactical training officer before sending me to VietNam for a rest.
3. In 1975 I reverted back to my enlisted rank and spent the next 12 years as a Special operations sergeant until my disability (which I wavered to stay on) put me in a desk job until retirement after the first Gulf War.
4. Been married since 1966.
5. Never had relations outside of marriage.
6. Never did drugs.
In todays world any one of these reasons would keep me from serving in Congress. Putting them all together and I’m surprised that they don’t take away my disability pay. Opp’s sorry they already did that in 2004 as a government cost saving item (only $87.00/month).
