Wildcat72, that is one of the most accurate run downs I’ve ever read here. I spent six years as an infantryman with the 82nd and 101st. The three round burst in the A3 and M4 is probably the best adaptation in a basic weapon I’ve seen for disciplined fire. Even the guys on the M240 and SAWs tended to work their rates of fire into shorter bursts. If we had a guy who just ran trough a belt or magazine, we’d try to correct or replace them.

If you read the account of the day SSG Hester got her Silver Star, you’ll find she used very controlled bursts in a very big crowd of insurgents. Anything less would have had her run through her belt too quickly and trying to reload while she was being rushed.

Question: Given the influence of redistricting and ideological polarization on the current composition of the House, with more and more members worried less about the general election than about primary challenges, why would progressive bigshots expect a nationwide messaging campaign for gun control to shake loose a critical mass of Republican votes? Answer: They don’t. The irony of all the Democratic rhetoric lately about how they need to move quickly and ram something through before public interest fades is that they’re actually playing a longer game.

Actually, their game really is to win on the state level in those states where the citizenry is primed and the state house and governor are their allies. Connecticut, New York, Illinois, Rhode Island, etc. They figure with this drum beat, they can get those states to “do the right thing.” Then, either they get a wave going, or else at least they create their perceived safe havens.

Hence, what everyone is missing here — including (from my seat here in Connecticut) the NRA — is that all the pro-gun happy talk about public opinion is beside the point. We’re at serious risk in places that our side isn’t paying attention to, and we are pretending it isn’t happening and thus not investing resources. They’re prepping the battlefield where they can win and the NRA and we are ignoring it.

Where have I seen this story before?

I think it would be extremely successful.

The M1 is equal to the M14. The M14 was absolutely terrible on full auto (the main reason why the M16 replaced it so quickly), and was in effect just a clunkier M1 (since it was only good in semi auto). The .308 is slightly less powerful than the .30-06, though it’s close enough to be honest that either round will do the same job.

The M14 had a 20 round magazine vs the M1′s 8 round magazine, probably it’s only advantage.

Full auto is really not even necessary or practical for an infantryman, not even in the much easier to handle (because the round is so much smaller and weaker than .30 caliber) M16/AR 15 series rifles, the standard army battle rifle is a M16 that fires automatic on 3 round bursts only. Automatic fire from hand held rifles greater than 3 rounds at a time only wastes ammo.

Oh, and I’ve had both the M1 and a properly built (not using cheap Chinese parts) M1A (Smith Enterprises receiver, and USGI parts) – and they’re both a dream to shoot.

If I had the money to invest, I’d love to start a company that makes NEW M1 rifles, both with iron sights and with a scope.

Whenever I get into a “discussion” here in lala land about “assault weapons”….the first thing I ask for is a definition of “assault weapon”

Single Shot
Semi-Automatic
Automatic
Rifle, Pistol, Shotgun.
You used them for:
Hunting, Sport, Home Defense
I still have no clue what an “assault weapon” is…but somehow it’s worked its way into the venacular of both the left AND right over the last two decades.
The nearest I can figure is that it looks like a military weapon even when built to civilian standards…or it’s camo’d out…or has a clip that holds more than three rounds cuz “no-one needs more than 10 shots to kill a deer”.
Life was alot simpler before we started electing idiots.

Yes! Single, semi, and auto is what we should be demanding use of in this “discussion”. It should be black and white. The right to bear arms=the right to possess weapons. What weapons were used by civilians at time of writing of the 2nd? How many owned cannons?(maybe my ignorance, but none to few??) Weapons=guns. Done.

Agreed. I do not understand the redundancy of “assault weapon”. A weapon is a weapon meant to assault whether it’s a fist, knife, pistol or an automatic firearm. Why do we use it or allow it to be used to identify any gun? Aren’t all guns assault weapons? It’s the left’s semantics used to create a fear and ignorance.
