Biden: My task force will have some gun-control recommendations on Obama’s desk by Tuesday

posted at 3:21 pm on January 10, 2013 by Allahpundit

The task force was supposed to have suggestions for O by the end of the month but that plan was kiboshed when the political reality of attention spans after mass shootings began to set in. So, new plan: The national lecture “conversation” on gun control will begin officially on Tuesday.

Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr. told sports shooting groups Thursday he would send his recommendations on preventing gun violence to President Barack Obama by Jan. 15, according to a White House pool report.

Biden mentioned several measures that he said he has heard supported repeatedly — universal background checks, limits on high capacity magazines, and the government’s ability to do research on gun violence. Biden clarified that background checks would go beyond closing the so-called gun show loophole.

He compared the current limits on federal data gathering with the 1970s restrictions on federal research over the cause of traffic fatalities. He said there is a need to study which weapons are used most to kill and which tend to be trafficked.

The One will issue some sort of executive order too, likely tightening reporting requirements for federal agencies related to gun ownership and mental health and directing the DOJ to bump up prosecutions of gun traffickers. Eric Holder himself will be sitting in on Biden’s meeting today with major gun retailers like Wal-Mart, during which the veep will remind them that requiring universal background checks means fewer sales for private sellers and therefore more sales for them. Corporate buy-offs: They worked for ObamaCare with the pharmaceutical industry, why couldn’t they work for this?

Just one question: Whither the new assault-weapons ban? That’s a glaring omission from Biden’s list of new measures on which he senses a consensus. There’s no doubt they’re going to propose one but there’s also no doubt that the House will sink it. I think the AWB is really more of a negotiating tactic than an earnest demand: They’ll put it out there next week as their unrealistic opening offer so that they can drop it later in favor of more “reasonable” feasible measures like universal background checks and banning high-capacity magazines. Background checks, in particular, enjoy massive support, with one recent poll showing 92% in favor of requiring them at gun shows and a CNN poll taken last year finding 94% support for checks on all potential gun buyers. That’d be a very tough vote for congressional Republicans and of course Biden knows it, which is why he’s talking it up today. If you can’t get your policies passed, you might as well use them as a way to make the opposition squirm.

lol
That’s beyond even Zero.

cane_loader on January 10, 2013 at 7:06 PM

Don’t count on it.
I have a shotgun (or ahhh used to have, before it fell into the lake – see above) that hasd an adjustable stock and pistol grip (Mossberg 500 Tactical). Those are precisely 2 of the gun attributes they are trying to use to define “assault weapons”.

dentarthurdent on January 10, 2013 at 8:18 PM

The official S.D. guide to effective gun control:

1. Thumb break holster.
2. Extended grip and thumb safeties.
3. Polished feed ramp.
4. Horizontal barrel positioning immediately upon clearing leather.
5. 2-handed grip.
6. Regular ammo-free deployment and sear search practice.
7. Constant inspection and maintenance.
8. Hit the range.

The shotgun shooting at Taft High School in CA today pointed the way as clearly as possible.

Having an armed guard is the only way to keep that gun out of that school.

Yeah, but an armed guard didn’t prevent Columbine, therefore having an armed guard will never prevent any shooting. At least that’s the argument made by brain-dead libs.

Just curious. I read some of these comments and they advocate putting an armed guard in every school. Are public schools Constitutional? No! Stolen money funds them so why are conservatives not up in arms about them in the first place? We should be trying to get everyone of them closed down, not trying to get guards placed in them. It’s the parent’s responsibility to educate their children. It’s morally wrong for my money to be stolen from me by the barrel of a gun (don’t think so, try not paying your taxes) to pay for someone else’s child or children to get a government indoctrination. Thoughts?

Local radio station KTWO reports that lawmakers in Wyoming have proposed a “Firearms Protection Act” that provides a state-level annulment of any ban against semi-automatics or magazines that hold 20 or 30 rounds or more.

If the measure passes, it would mean that anyone–even federal agents-who try to enforce a ban within the state borders could be charged with a felony.

As Rush has said, just as many pieces of the health care bill were written years (perhaps decades) before it got crammed through, you can be certain that there are finished drafts of dubious assortments of gun control regulations that Congress and Obama will try to sneak into legislation if they can. And they’re champing at the bit to do so.

“China established gun control in 1935. From 1948 to 1952, 20 million political dissidents were rounded up and exterminated.

“Guatemala established gun control in 1964. From 1964 to 1981, 100,000 Mayan Indians were rounded up and exterminated.

“Uganda established gun control in 1970. From 1971 to 1979, 300,000 Christians were rounded up and exterminated.

“Cambodia established gun control in 1956. From 1975 to 1977, one million ‘educated’ people were rounded up and exterminated.”

Now that everybody is in full lather, the tyrannts will introduce such a meager list of infringements called “common sense gun safety solutions” that the weak-minded will accept them with mere grumbling.

The measures will do absolutely nothing to solve a problem of any sort, but will certainly:

Increase government tax revenue

Increase the government control over gun import, manufactue, sales, ownership

Further restrict reloading supplies and ammo

Mostly increase taxes.

o Most weapons murders are not perpetrated using ‘assault-style’ weapons – they are HAND GUNS.
o More murders are committed using BARE HANDS & BASEBALL BATS

‘Americans want us to act’:
– The majority of Americans want the govt to step in & strip us of our 2nd Amendment Rights

– The majority of Americans wanted Obamacare

– The majority of Americans voted for Obama, thereby sending him a message that they WANTED him to raise taxes on 77% of Americans, to continue to give our hard-earned dollars to politicians who haven’t worked hard to earn a dollar in decades, so the government can continue to use that money in very important & necessary ways…like handing the Muslim Brotherhood/Egypt over a dozen new F-16 Fighter Jets & give hundreds of billions of dollars to Big Time Obama Donors to cover their losses when their ‘Green Energy’ Company investments go bankrupt…..

– Americans WANT to pay for an unlimited number of abortions, whether by handing out ‘morning-after-pills to our kids without requiring parental notification/approval or barbaric late-term abortions….

– Americans want to continue to support Obama’s Immigration policy, which contradicts/violates existing Immigration laws, & WANT Illegals to receive social program benefits established & meant for Americans only….

– Americans want the administration that handed over thousands of illegal weapons to Mexican Drug Cartels, resulting in over 300+ & counting deaths, telling US that WE can’t be trusted with guns & trying to keep weapons out of law abiding citizens’ hands….

America in general, and the NRA in particular sacraficed NO ONE for the purpose of avoiding “constraints on magazine capacity.”
The odds are better that the Government sacraficed those massacred at Newtown, CT, for the purpose of “harvesting” as much firearms restricting legislation as they could get from the post-massacre “wave-of-emotion.”

Civilian semi-auto models of military light weapons with MILITARY-CAPACITY MAGAZINES, are the best firearms for the common citizen to check government dominion.

Read Kim Strassel’s opinion piece in today’s WSJ.

Finally, a rational look at the possibility of passage- which is very low. Gun rights are one of the few things many Republicans and Democrats agree on.

Democrats will rue the day they started this fallacious, misguided, irresponsible nonsense.

Standing on the backs of children murdered by a madman they have once again tried to steal liberty from honest, hard-working, law-abiding people. It will become know as one of the most disgusting, opportunistic acts in out nations history.

This has nothing to do with addressing the fundamental issues behind that tragedy. Not one person has articulated how any of these proposals would have change that outcome. Remember that- not one.

The only thing I’ll say on this subject is perhaps it’s better for society not to have to deal with descendents of the kind people who are actually willing to abort their own babies. Just a thought.

Please don’t get me started on abortion.

My parents made sure to tell me, many times, they ‘waited’ twelve years to have me. My mom went through two miscarriages that I know of, and those hurt her.

My mom and dad wanted me, they loved me and I’m alive because those wonderful people looked for me when only God alone knew of me.

Abortion is the most horrid possible refusal to give love there can ever be.

Notwithstanding little boy Bush called us (ten generations Texans) vigilanties, notwithstanding we handed this info to Republican Senator John Cornyn and his staff clear info on corruption in the on the ground Border Patrol 4 years ago to include film we made at night near the Rio Gand in Big Bend National Park.

Now even CBS’s executives seem to get it at least they want to sell adds on their Sunday Morning show.

Sharyl Attkissen has taken the bit and run with our info and more.

There be those in the Border Patrol and the FBI /DEA who are doing their jobs and understand the clear and present danger the durg cartel’s “coyotes” are to the U.S. and its citizens.

Sunday Morning CBS 9:00 Jan. 13, 2013.

The R’s and D’s are both up to their evil necks in this on going crime aginst we the people.

Background checks, in particular, enjoy massive support, with one recent poll showing 92% in favor of requiring them at gun shows

Background checks are already required at gun shows. The laws are the same there as everywhere else.

“In 1929, the Soviet Union established gun control. From 1929 to 1953, about 20 million dissidents were rounded up and exterminated.

stormridercx4 on January 11, 2013 at 4:13 AM

One correction on the above. By latest count Stalin exterminated 43 MILLION of his citizens. Not counting another 23 MILLION they lost during WWII after he refused to listen to his top commanders that Nazis will invade, and after right prior to that invasion he exterminated 4000 high level military officers leaving the military open for decimation that followed. It was only due to partisans, you know, those gun grabbing hunters in villages as Hussein pointed out recently, that Russians today are not native speakers in German.

64 MILLION. Chump change by liberal standards.

Don’t have exact numbers for Mao’s purges. Staggering as well.

It’s so quiet.
Gandalf: It’s the deep breath before the plunge.
Pippin: I don’t want to be in a battle. But waiting on the edge of one I can’t escape is even worse.

Crazy ol’ Uncle Joe continues to amaze and amuse. Today he was talking about how to solve the gun violence problem and he actually said, “…there’s no silver bullet.”

Disarm the Secret Service

Interesting how complex a subject as mass shootings involving semi-automatic rifles and pistols, mental health and related pharmaceuticals, and the extreme violence portrayed in video games and the movies, can be distilled in a week into a report to give Obama convenient “coverage” for executive orders likely unconstitutional, by someone with Biden’s famous intellect.
You don’t suppose this whole “meeting with both sides of the issue” plan is just a ruse to enact harsh gun laws, do you? Surely to hobble something as critical to the American experiment as the Second Amendment with such a diaphanous “review” of all the elements involved can’t be their goal, can it?

As for comments that there’s no appetite in Congress to pass harsh laws that would disarm the public, don’t forget that Obama’s reelection was hardly in the bag either, nor was ObamaCare, but alas, both prevailed.
