New White House petition: Hey, let’s make the Senate pass a budget, as law requires

posted at 2:41 pm on January 9, 2013 by Mary Katharine Ham

Well, here’s a petition I could get behind. A citizen named Daniel H presents this novel idea to the Obama administration:

WE PETITION THE OBAMA ADMINISTRATION TO:
require the U. S. Senate to pass a budget for the upcoming fiscal year as required by law.

With respect for the coequality of the branches of government, this wouldn’t actually require the Executive Branch to grab any extra power because the writing of budgets is already a law. This is more of a public shaming mechanism, since the political press has deemed it A-okay over the past three years to ignore this essential element of governing.

I struggle to imagine the cacophony of accountability coverage if a Republican Congress had refused to pass a budget for three years for openly political reasons and a transparent aversion to transparency. But alas, here we are forcing the issue through White House petitions and as a negotiating chit in debt-ceiling negotiations.

I’m all for using the debt-ceiling negotiations to get back to some kind of normal budgeting process. Cliffs are both politically high-stakes and all but materially useless in solving our problems, which is the worst combination. But it is a testament to just how far we have sunk under the Reid-Obama combo that the best the American people can hope for is a return to the deeply flawed budget process of pre-2010. We used to dream of budget reform. I’d hate to negotiate back to pre-2010 budgeting without insisting on some budget reform elements mixed in. This issue also offers an occasional bright spot in Joe Scarborough’s Twitter feed these days:

Whatever form this push takes, it must be loud and near-constant leading up to debt-ceiling talks. If it is, there’s potential for wringing a modicum of honest coverage from the press corps and revealing the culprit in the recent cliff-to-cliff existence everyone hates. More importantly, making the American people aware of the lack of a budget process and restoring some kind of order at least modestly improves our chances of solving some of our long-term problems. Each cliff is a convenient distraction for both lawmakers (and to some extent, a public) that would rather ignore them.

Ed on the budget tactic:

It’s not just the debt limit, and it’s not just to keep baseline spending artificially high, either. Ever since it became clear that Republicans would likely win the lower chamber thanks to Democratic overreach, Harry Reid has shut down the budget process in order to create all sorts of false budgetary crises. Issues like tax policy and debt limits would normally be resolved in conference committee, with perhaps a short-time continuing resolution to extend the previous budget authorizations a few days to conclude negotiations at the beginning of a budget cycle.

Instead, we have run the government for 1350 days by continuing resolutions and omnibus catch-alls, perhaps the least efficient ways of legislating and of working out compromises. Why? Reid doesn’t want conference committees and compromises — he wants capitulations. That’s why we keep careening from crisis to crisis, from cliff to cliff.

How serious are Republicans at pressing this strategy? So far this morning, I’ve already received two e-mails from sources on Capitol Hill promoting Byron’s piece. It’s the rare political strategy that not only benefits a party but is also objectively the right thing to do. We need to stop disconnecting debt ceilings from the normal budget process, but that can only happen when Congress has a normal budget process in place. We haven’t seen a normal budget process in more than three years, and the debt ceiling may be the only way to force Reid to abide by the law and get back to work.

Sign away, folks.

Update: Perhaps the best way to get coverage for this petition would be to attach it to the Deport Piers Morgan petition, and then attach both to Piers Morgan’s head.

White House response, a big finger!

Very Important!!!

Vice President Joe Biden revealed that President Barack Obama might use an executive order to deal with guns.

“The president is going to act,” said Biden, giving some comments to the press before a meeting with victims of gun violence. “There are executives orders, there’s executive action that can be taken. We haven’t decided what that is yet. But we’re compiling it all with the help of the attorney general and the rest of the cabinet members as well as legislative action that we believe is required.”

Biden said that this is a moral issue and that “it’s critically important that we act.”

Biden talked also about taking responsible action. “As the president said, if you’re actions result in only saving one life, they’re worth taking. But I’m convinced we can affect the well-being of millions of americans and take thousands of people out of harm’s way if we act responsibly.”

Biden, as he himself noted, helped write the Brady bill.

Eric Holder was scheduled to be at the meeting that’s currently take place at the White House.

From the Headline thread…

Byron York: Why can’t Republicans enforce the budget law against Harry Reid?

That question assumes a great deal. First it assumes that the GOPe Leadership even wants to. An assumption, which once the verbal assurances that they do are stripped away and all we are left with is their actual actions, one can see with a painful clarity is completely and totally false, a fiction created to mislead and deceive their constitutes and nothing more.

All the other questions fall to the wayside after addressing that one. Whether they have the leverage, the skill or even the testicular fortitude become meaningless speculation in the face of the GOPe Leaderships documented record on the issue.

In other words, Byron, the question you should be asking is, Why don’t the Republican Establishment LEADERSHIP want to enforce the budget law against Harry Reid?

From a purely logical perspective, unless one begins their inquiry by asking the right questions, one will never arrive at the correct answers.

Find yourself a local range that has classes in basic gun safety to learn the rules.

Either that or a friend who is knowledgeable on the subject.

Bottom line: learn the basics before even handling a gun, then try some out to find one that is right for you.

Some ranges have rentals etc.

Visit a gun show to get a feel for what you want.

I used to suggest that you buy whatever is going to be likely banned first –Sport Utility Rifles and the like – but I don’t think that applicable anymore – the Oppressives want to ban everything.

Let me just get some comments out there:

First of all: Gun Control Kill People

Yes it does, but that is a sad but necessary consequence in the effort to disarm the general public. Gun control disarms law abiding citizens with the eventual intent of making them subjects of the government with no firearms at hand making it more difficult to rise up and resist tyranny.

Second: Just where in Hades does the Dear Liar even begin to think that he has the authority to do this?

He Won.

It’s almost like he’s saying to the GOP: I’m taking control, what are you punks going to do about it?

Almost!? You might not have been paying attention, but in Barry’s mind and actions he’s already been in control and daring them to do anything to him for the past 4 years.

hawkeye54 on January 9, 2013 at 3:06 PM

And why havent Republicans hammered this issue? Why didnt Mitt even mention the fact that Obamas budgets were unanymously voted down and the senate hasnt passed one? Why for the past two years has republican leadership failed to close the purse until a budget was presented? Theyre all cashing in and protecting their own power. They could care less about a petition. Notice they dont have town halls anymore either. Theyve gerrymandered their districts so they have lifetime jobs and republicans with a few exceptions are a huge part of the problem. Obama will overreach and then maybe just maybe people will finally get mad enough and realize whats happening doesnt work. Or not.

Some states offer concealed weapons classes – even if you’re not considering going that route – it’ll familiarize you with all your local laws and legal ramifications of ownership/handling, plus you usually get some trigger time at the local range. (many of the classes will provide loaner pistols)

In recent years, with the advent of mass multimedia, people have been inundated with the political circus that is our nation’s government. The ability to reach the masses in America has made the once maligned civic and patriotic duty into a sought after profession, in which the candidates do not even remotely resemble the politicians at the birth of this nation. This new breed preaches that the government is the answer to all ills, from where all power comes and that our shining democracy is an example for all to follow. The problem with that thought process is that the United States was created not as a democracy, but as a constitutional republic where the majority of power lay with the states. That power, however, has migrated to the centralized government, and needs to be arrested back by its intended keeper.
It is important to understand how we have arrived at this current state of affairs, one must know where we started and the reasons why the government was organized in its original fashion by the founding fathers. Most people know about the Declaration of Independence and the Revolutionary War, but few know the system that guided us through that war, nor the document that sustained up until the time of the ratification of the Constitution. If the people were to throw off their apathetic attitude toward government, and reclaim their sacred duty of vigilance over self governance, they would soon realize how much freedom has been lost to the government. They would clamor for the return of controls, which once kept the beast in check, while allowing for the three founding principles of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness to thrive once again.

Weak.

That’s a very weak petition leaving out any and all germane mentionables surrounding the Democrat failure to pass a budget for the last 4 years.

I won’t sign it.

I signed the Deport Piers Morgan petition and I’ll sign a Budget petition too — but only if it mentions the Democrats failure for the last 4 years to even endeavor to pass a federal budget and at least mentioning the obstructionist tactics Harry Reid has used for 4 years running to actually prevent a budget from even being voted on.

Otherwise — yeah — they are already required by law to pass a budget so what the fark is the point of a one-sentence petition that flatly states, “Require Senate to pass a Budget.”

Lame. Uber lame.

In addition to all of the aforementioned, the last budget control/raising of the deficit required naming cuts or sequestering money…which has been postponed for two months.

This gives the Obama administration time to name their cuts. Those cuts have to be in place before we proceed any further. Obama missed the deadline to tell us how he would make those cuts, opting to tell America in front of the American people at a debate with Mitt Romney that nothing bad was going to happen with those cuts…layoffs in defense would not be happening…etc.

Time to name those cuts. Ask the Budget Director Jack Lew which cuts are going into effect at his confirmation hearing. They have two months right now, do you think they will make a plan?

Those cuts were in exchange for raising the money they already spent in the last deficit cap lifting. If they had made the cuts sooner, they would not have run out of deficit money as fast. They are guilty of defrauding the American people.

Those cuts go into effect in two months. They can no longer be included in a deal because they WERE THE DEAL.
