National Cathedral to begin performing gay weddings

posted at 8:14 pm on January 9, 2013 by Allahpundit

It’s nominally Episcopal but I’ve always thought of it as the beating heart of ceremonial deism, so no surprise that it would shift as the wider public does.

Say this for the dean, too: He makes no bones about his political intentions. Although if you’re head of the National Cathedral and reaching out to press a hot button, why bother doing that? Why pretend it’s a purely religious decision when it’s not?

“I read the Bible as seriously as fundamentalists do,” Hall told the AP. “And my reading of the Bible leads me to want to do this because I think it’s being faithful to the kind of community that Jesus would have us be.”

Celebrating same-sex weddings is important beyond the Episcopal Church, Hall said. Church debate is largely settled on the matter, allowing for local decisions, he said. The move is also a chance to influence the nation.

“As a kind of tall-steeple, public church in the nation’s capital, by saying we’re going to bless same-sex marriages, conduct same-sex marriages, we are really trying to take the next step for marriage equality in the nation and in the culture,” Hall said.

This comes on the same day that lefties are grumbling at Obama for letting the benediction at his inauguration be delivered by a pastor from Atlanta who opposes gay marriage, believes homosexuality is a sin, and thinks Christ can help lead gays out of their “lifestyle.” Looking forward to the official White House statement about how those views are allegedly too far out of the mainstream of Christian thinking to earn him a spot at the national table on the 21st.

Exit question: Second look at the blessings of atheism instead?

A lot of people have a gut feeling that same sex marriage is wrong. They can’t exactly put it into words, but they know their feelings have something to do with children…..

ardenenoch on April 5, 2013 at 6:14 PM

Really?

Well, allow me to “put it into words.”

I, as a traditional marriage proponent understand what this is all about. It has nothing to do with “marriage equality” but only to do with the destruction of marriage as we know it in our society.

When I grew up (in the 60′s basically) the family was the ‘help-all, the catch-all, the fall-back-on’ reliability.

The more the government is permitted to destroy that paradigm, the more it usurps its importance.

See how easy that is? And, they have hordes of demographics to make it happen.

I’ve said this once before here, I’ll say it again. For the first time in my life, I’m glad my son hasn’t given me grandchildren. I won’t have to die with the thought of them living in the future USSA.

Then he declared he was going to marry my sister. (He really liked her name.) It was funny and cute until another kid in the class told him he couldn’t marry my sister. Then he tried to kick the other kid and became so angry that he cried, threw a big fit, and had to go to time-out.

It is beyond outrageous. It is utterly contemptible, stupid and wholly ignorant. It looks like it WAS written by the bloody New York Times and the Southern Poverty Law Centre, which lists the leader of the New Black Panther Party, Malik Zulu Shabazz, as one of the ’30 New Activists Heading Up The Radical Right.’ They cannot even distinguish between religions, denominations and organisations.

Catholicism is a denomination. DoD has condemned more than 1 billion people. Islam is a religion, but it isn’t condemned.

Evangelical Christianity is a type of Christianity found in various denominations, including Catholicism.

Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and Ultra-Orthodox Judaism are sects. They aren’t religions, denominations, terrorist organisations, or religious-political- cultural-economic organisations.

Sunni Islam is a denomination. So is Shia Islam, but it is not listed. Why? The Iranians are, primarily, Shia.

The Muslim Brotherhood is neither a religion nor a denomination. It is a religious, political, cultural and economic organisation.

The KKK, Hutaree, and Christian Identity are white supremacist organisations, not religions or denominations.

The Nation of Islam is neither a religion nor a denomination. It is a religious, political, cultural and economic organisation.

Al Qaeda, Hamas, and Abu Sayyah are internationally-recognised and listed terrorist organisations.

Heads need to roll.

I have some advice for the religious of all faiths in the US…and those that support them…and I AM SAYING THIS AS AN ATHEIST: You need to take time off of work, get off of the sofa, and get your asses to Washington. A ‘Million Man March’? Pffft! You need to put so many bodies in DC that there is SRO in Northern Virginia and Maryland.

You CANNOT allow this administration to get away with equating you to Al Qaeda and Hamas…and DO NOT BACKDOWN EVEN IF OBAMA APOLOGISES.

The administration cannot be allowed to get away with it nor can this type of mentality be met with a ‘Meh,’ This is not abortion or SSM…even people of faith can have honest, legitimate, heartfelt disagreements on those topics. This is our government labelling whole denominations as terrorists.

Catholics are the same as Al Qaeda?

Fundamentalist Christians are the same as Hamas?

Ultra-Orthodox Jews are the same as the KKK?

Fundamentalist Mormons are the same as the Muslim Brotherhood?

It is fvcking absurd, ignorant, hateful, and bordering on TREASON in my opinion.

“Hi Susie. You and Mary are always together on the playground. Is she your best friend? Do you love her? Do you have feelings for each other? This means you are h o m o s e x u a l. Let’s spell that word together now.”

This is child abuse. Perverted child abuse. But this is going to be the natural progression of a society that has no foundation or standards. God is whatever you want him to be as long as he’s not judgmental and all loving. “God loves me and my sin. Heck.. sin? What sin! Jesus must have been gay too!”

Jesus came once as Savior. He comes next as Conqueror. King of kings and Lord of lords.

If being present with Obama, that would be true. I can’t stand him and think low of him, but if face-to-face I would give all due, proper, and traditional respect to the President of the United States.

Liam on April 5, 2013 at 10:03 PM

Not me. He’s gonna get a piece of my mind if he ever gets that close to me. To hell with respect for the President of the United States. That was thrown out the window a few decades ago.

Cleombrotus on April 6, 2013 at 9:00 AM

I can’t decide if this is child abuse or a form of child pornography. Probably a little of both. What nice parents that kid must have.

Isn’t one of the arguments against same-sex marriage leading to pederasty that it is evident that children cannot consent?!

So on the subject of same-sex marriage, we should listen to the consent of a 5-year-old?

Can they be led, or can’t they?!?!

Axeman on April 6, 2013 at 9:49 AM

Almost boring, another example of the debased vulgarity of the left, therefore not to be reported, exposed, by our guardians in the media.
After all, they have a full time job trying to make Obama look normal.

I have now officially HAD ENOUGH of MSNBC and their liberal left wing political bullcrap!!!

Now they are using KIDS to try and push their agenda?!!! What in the name of God ever happened to the concept of decency? I don’t give a damn if this is about gay marriage or climate control, or political philosophy or the Tooth Fairy! YOU DON’T USE KIDS TO PUSH AN AGENDA THEY OBVIOUSLY HAVE NO CONCEPT OF!!! THEY ARE INNOCENTS!

I am now calling out MSNBC for what they really are, namely the media mouthpiece for the Obama Administration and the liberal left! They are NOT A NEWS SERVICE! THEY NEVER WERE! THEY ARE A PROPAGANDA TOOL AND NOTHING MORE!!!

And the liberal scumbag bastards should now be BOYCOTTED AND SHUNNED!

pilamaye on April 6, 2013 at 10:45 AM

What is most disturbing about this is that a grown woman (Ms. Ball), doesn’t have the maturity to understand that kids at this age cannot comprehend complex issues such as “marriage,” as was demonstrated by the little girl’s first answer, “I don’t know” [what marriage is]. So, instead of doing the right thing – the thing that any mature adult would do – which is end the interview right there, she leads the young girl down a path to get the answers she wants.

I’m afraid I’m going to insult someone by saying this, but this is the typical nonsense I see from a LOT of “progressive” women today. Regardless of age, the vast majority seem stuck in the intellectual equivalent of college sophomore mentality. The logic behind their positions, the methods of protest … pretty much anything they do screams sophomore female college student attempting to “empower” herself against imaginary oppressions. The level of complexity in their thought processes never goes beyond that – whether it’s Sandra Fluke arguing for free birth control at the cost of freedom of conscience or this idiot (Krystal Ball) interviewing a child who clearly can’t understand what is being asked of her – all in an attempt to make an insipid point. Even the progressive women on the news – Soladad O’Brien, Norah O’Donnell, etc. The level of complex thought just can’t seem to get beyond this stage of development, and it produces cringe-worthy results like this.

studentofhistory on April 6, 2013 at 10:52 AM

The problem is that she is leading the interviewee towards the responses she wants.

AlexB on April 6, 2013 at 11:15 AM

Krystal Ball

Really? She doesn’t look like a pron actress.

And, yes, only the emotionalism of the progressives thinks that children’s opinions should be heard and assumed to have value. There are only two things in which children should be held up as exemplars: trust and innocence. The progressives have abused the first and insisted on destroying the second.

I think you give her too much credit. I think she knows exactly what she’s doing, and doesn’t mind destroying the child’s heart and mind to enact her progressive Utopia.

GWB on April 6, 2013 at 11:31 AM

The comments on this thread are RIDICULOUS. Its a sweet (if earnestly liberal) conversation between a mother and a daughter about this issue. “Child abuse?” That’s just so over the top. I am sure these kinds of conversations happen in liberal houses all the time. Like this cute moment: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6SvCvvEbWR8

libfreeordie on April 6, 2013 at 11:48 AM

Krystal Ball – yes, that’s how it is spelled. Her parents obviously didn’t show much more reasoning skills than she did based on the name.

I used to think so, but I’ve met many of these willfully stunted intellectuals in academia and in my profession (lawyer), and every time, I’ve been amazed at how incapable they are of taking basic facts and connecting them together to form logical conclusions, or to take their positions, process them to their logical conclusions, and realize the stunningly stupid results.

I’ve met intelligent female progressives with whom I can have a conversation, but examples like Ms. Ball here seem to be steadily outnumbering their more intelligent counterparts and the result is that their only defense is to declare an opponent evil or a bigot because they, personally, cannot think through their arguments any further than that.

studentofhistory on April 6, 2013 at 11:50 AM

Destroying the child’s heart and mind………OK…………

libfreeordie on April 6, 2013 at 11:48 AM

Yes – not necessarily because of the position that she is attempting to lead the child towards, but because she is treating a CHILD as if the CHILD can contextualize and process the data required to truly analyze a very complex issue. It would be like me asking my 5 year old whether she thought the next county bond referendum was a smart idea. It places a mental burden on the child that the child cannot process – no matter what liberals like you think. Any child psychologist will tell you that a 5 year old CANNOT process this type of issue with any meaning. To attempt to make them do it – in front of a camera no less – is ridiculous.

My guess, libfreeordie, is that you think so little of your opponents arguments (just like Ms. Ball does) that you think that “a child can give the right answer” and this is “cute” because you have so little respect for what others who disagree with you think. However, (1) despite what you think, the issue is complex; (2) even if it was a simple issue for adults, it cannot be a simple issue for a child; and (3) it is not “cute” to exploit children like this for political posturing. This whole endeavor just contributes to the triteness of our political dialogue.

studentofhistory on April 6, 2013 at 11:58 AM

Libfreeordie – One more point – what if the child had given a “wrong” answer – like “that’s just weird.” First, do you think MSNBC would actually post it? Second, what do you think Ms. Ball would do? Do you really think she would allow her child to continue in that line of thought – allow her child to think freely about the issue? Or would she “correct” the child to make sure that she understood how marriage work and, in Ms. Ball’s opinion, works for two mommies just like it works for Mommies and Daddies. My guess is that your opinion of just how “cute” this is is also dependent on the outcome, which makes my point for me quite nicely, thank you.

For a boi whose more interested in gobbling on another guy’s nob, please don’t talk to the straights like you have any comprehension about rasing a child you’ve given birth to.

OK?

You’re are a remote viewer when it comes to the connection of offspring, and always will be, no matter what group of scientists get involved.

How do I know this?/

Because I took the same arrogant approach you do, when I was single and without children.

In other words, you do not know, nor ever will, what that natural biological connection is like.

Deal with it.

I promise this took more than one take to get correct.

You can tell, because when Ball ask her about who she would marry, she refers to a male, and then when asked about SSM, her language changes on the words “Oh yeah”, meaning someone told her.

The point is the girls natural inclination is not towards marriage free-for-all, but biological compatibility, and Ball is trying to rewire her brain to think against her nature.

And THAT arrogant approach you took when you were younger and more immature is EXACTLY what I am talking about and what most progressives – and especially today’s younger female progressives I’m sorry to say – are guilty of. No ability to look at the other side of an issue and THINK CRITICALLY of one’s own position. Treating it as if a “child” could understand how right you are. Also, unwilling to do the simple tasks of speaking with others who disagree or have different experiences in any meaningful, exploratory manner – more in the “I just want to prove I’m right and how dumb they are” manner.

Yeah. I keep looking for the triggers. One obviously is the level of entertainment and marketing that is driven beyond self-interest and into self-centerness. But, I keep thinking the bigger one is in how communication is broken down into such impersonal and truncated manners.

We’re exchanging open messages, but to 20somethings, this is actual talking. But, it’s not a conversation. Neither is texting, tweets, etc… So in stead of being productive communication tools that enhance contact between people, it’s driven us farther apart.

Perfect example is Twitter. Every pundit wants as many followers as possible, but have zero interaction with them. That’s why the term “follow” is so appropriate; the hierarchy wants you to be a follower and not a leader.

budfox on April 6, 2013 at 12:40 PM

What are we doing to our babies? She should be playing and growing not shoring up her mother’s beliefs. This morning in our local paper there was an article about a teacher who has been fired for leaving her kindergarten class unattended and having a fight break out where one child was stabbed in the neck with a pencil and a boy was performing oral sex on another boy. IN KINDERGARTEN!!!!!
