Gun control: Piers Morgan vs. Marine who wrote that open letter to Dianne Feinstein

posted at 9:34 pm on January 9, 2013 by Allahpundit

Via Mediaite, even a grandstander as pompous as Morgan knows better than to sneer at a vet the way he routinely does at other gun-rights activists. Boston, the author of the letter read ’round the blogosphere, does well for himself but I always come away from these debates wondering why the two sides end up dancing around crime stats and the minutiae of what makes an assault weapon an assault weapon. That’s fine, but that’s not what’s at the heart of this. The heart of it is that gun owners don’t trust gun-grabbers’ motives. Right? It’s nothing as grandiose (to me, at least) as fearing that the government’s going to enact martial law or something. It’s the belief that, despite their professions of “reasonable” regulation, people like Morgan or Joe Biden would keep pushing until they’d banned private ownership of firearms completely if they could. (Morgan might admit as much, Biden wouldn’t.) The failure of their own policies practically compels them to do that: Columbine took place during the last assault-weapons ban, but supposedly that just proves that the ban wasn’t strict enough so we need to make it more onerous this time. There’ll be more mass shootings even if a new ban is enacted, and those will be cited as proof that the new ban needs to be stricter still. Realistically, there’s no scenario where they decide that they’ve gone far enough. Once you’ve reached that point, where you can’t trust your opponent to volunteer and abide by a limit to his own regulatory ambition, what’s left to debate? Where good faith is lacking, there’s nothing to discuss.

Having said all that, I do think Weigel’s right that people are overreacting to the prospect of The One issuing some sort of executive order on guns. For one thing, it’d be uncharacteristic of him to risk his own political capital by acting unilaterally on something as controversial as that. He wants Congress to take the lead on this (as usual) so that he bears as little responsibility as possible if it fails or even if it succeeds and there’s a major backlash. He may issue an order but it’ll deal with marginal stuff. If he did issue one that was more ambitious, there’d be so much outcry and so many lawsuits that his second term would be tangled up in this for months or years. And he doesn’t want that. When push comes to shove, I don’t think he cares much about guns. He’d be happy to ban them, I’m sure, but my sense is that it’s not the sort of thing that drives him. What drives him is the “fairness” that comes with raising taxes by four or five percent on rich people and then doing jack about entitlements while the treasury slowly melts down from unfunded obligations. That’s the sort of thing of which great presidential legacies are made.

Realistically, there’s no scenario where they decide that they’ve gone far enough.

Exactly. That’s why, in Morgan’s Britain, a number of politicians during their last round of parliamentary elections were talking about knife control. No, seriously, they were. The UK is the second most violent country in the EU, their violent crime rate (both with and without firearms) has skyrocketed since 1998′s gun ban, and they’re talking about knife control.

If a basic distrust of the government isn’t a primary issue for you then why would the banning of all firearms except shotguns for self-defense, be worse than banning Happy Meals for example, besides requiring hunters to use crossbows and compound bows for hunting?

I’m torn, as in the debate between whether the left is essentially evil or stupid, with whether they want to ban guns because they are, at their heart, communists, or whether they just ooze “I care” idiocy and ignorance. Again, it comes down to the evil (communist) vs stupid (low info) debate. Again, I’m torn.

The same guy who actually runs guns and launders money for foreign drug cartels so that they can kill Americans ?

That has been on-going since 2005, but perhaps it is getting more attention now as well as lighters?!!

BBC World Service
Breaking News

Researchers in the UK have come to the conclusion that despite the countries many bans (drugs, handguns, assault rifles, and pointed kitchen knives etc..) violent crime is still on the rise in the small island nation. Statistics publicly available from Scotland Yard and the Metropolitan Police indicates that crimes committed with household lighters and petrol are becoming shockingly more common. “Youths are ambushing people as they walk at night, dousing them in petrol and engulfing them in flames.” said an Officer with the London Metropolitan Police. “Its truly shocking that they can get away with these things!”

“We need petrol for our cars, for transportation,” said a Ministry spokesman today, speaking anonymously because he was not able to comment on the record, “but lighters are another thing altogether.”

A panel of researchers was established to consider the issue last month. Their findings are now publically available. The researchers said there was no reason for automatic lighters or “long nosed barbeque lighters” to be publicly available at all. A spokesman for the researchers made it a point to say that taking away the “readily available nature of these lighters” would make significant strides into ensuring the safety of the public, and the nation’s children.

“The old method of striker and flints will still provide the same effect for those who wish to light a fire in their homes or in a campground, but automatic lighters have proved to dangerous and should not be in the hands of the public.” said a Ministry spokesman.

A motion is set to be submitted to Parliament banning the importation and sale of automatic lighters early next quarter.

sharrukin on January 9, 2013 at 9:55 PM

In the UK, there are extremely strict gun laws but that has not stopped violent crime at all, in fact, it has increased. There are also very stringent laws on the sale of sharp objects:

The UK outlawed the switchblade and gravity knife in 1959.

In 1988 possession of a pocket knife with a blade larger than 3 inches in public became illegal.

In 1996, it became illegal to sell a razor blade to anyone under the age of 16.

In 2007, you needed a license to be able to sell “non-domestic knives.”

Well after all, Barack Obama, he’s an ordinary gun grabbing fascist man
Who desires nothing more than an ordinary chance
To make all people live exactly as he wishes, and do precisely what he wants…
An average fascist man is he, of no especially clever whim
Who wants to control everyone’s life
While he goes golfing or on yet another royal vacation with his ugly wife
With everyone supinely doing whatever he thinks is best … … for him
Well… just an ordinary fascist man is he …

BUT!
Let some real Americans speak out against his destructive schemes and his serenity will be through
They’ll protest his grand controlling plans, from the cellar to the dome
And then go on to the enthralling fun of piece by piece eviscerating him…

It’s nothing as grandiose (to me, at least) as fearing that the government’s going to enact martial law or something.

Well, the point is they can’t as it stands. It could eventually if they are successful.

But I don’t think this is really about grabbing guns. I think democrats are wearing the blood of children to demonize a demographic they believe would not vote for them anyway for no other reason than to take attention away from the economy. Their base loves the talk. It’s a top progressive dogma. So they are placated despite a shrinking paycheck. They would love any other topic than the economy.

If they cared at all about stopping such tragedies, it’s pretty easy to determine they all happen in “gun free zones”. So logic would dictate banning such zones. If they are successful in punishing the law abiding for a lunatic then what will their excuse be when a lunatic pics another weapon? In a “gun free zone” that takes 20 minutes for police to show up, a lunatic can do a lot of damage with nearly anything. Time to allow adults the ability and right to defend themselves in these areas.

MechanicalBill on January 9, 2013 at 10:04 PM

Obama loves to throw out the bait and sit back and watch the frothing.

Then he takes what looks like a reasonable approach that no one plays out to its final goal. It will be some kind of registration or limit. Nothing too alarming but it’s all part of the piece by piece, inch by inch until nothing is left.

A slow incremental claw back of rights seems harmless enough until one day, they have you by the balls and it’s too late.

katy on January 9, 2013 at 10:04 PM

If gun-grabbing, anti-American collectivists did actually manage to pick up a firearm during a shooting war and try to do something with it, they wouldn’t have any idea how to clear a jam, how to use the forward assist, or how to turn on the mysterious, magical red dot inside the sight. Their college PhD classes at Ivy League schools never taught them anything practical. They don’t live in the real world

They’d have no clue how to compensate for bullet drop or how to estimate and compensate for a crosswind. They think a “primer” is a pre-calc Cliff Notes booklet, and they think “reloaded” means something to do with The Matrix.

If it actually came down to a shooting war between gun grabbers and gun owners, the gun owners would absolutely dominate the battlefield.

TxAnn56 on January 9, 2013 at 10:05 PM

Awww … c’mon Allah. That’s not even close.

From the preceding “gun thread”:

The Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution is the “guarantor” of the whole Constitution.

Without it, the rest of the U.S. Constitution becomes no more than a historic document, to show future generations what we started our lives with, but lost for them.

BigWyo on January 9, 2013 at 10:24 PM

people like Morgan or Joe Biden would keep pushing until they’d banned private ownership of firearms completely if they could. (Morgan might admit as much, Biden wouldn’t.)

“Banning guns is an idea whose time has come.”

- Senator Joseph Biden, Associated Press, 18 November 1993

Pot…

“I think he just made an admission against self-interest. I don’t know that he is mentally qualified to own that gun (because the questioner – an American citizen referred to his once-banned gun as his “baby”). I’m being serious. Look, we should be working with law enforcement, right now, to make sure that we protect people against people who don’t — are not capable of knowing what to do with a gun because they’re either mentally imbalanced and/or because they have a criminal record, and…I hope he doesn’t come looking for me.”

- Senator Joe Biden, Democratic Presidential debate, July 2007

Meets kettle…

“I guarantee you Barack Obama ain’t taking my shotguns, so don’t buy that malarkey. Don’t buy that malarkey. They’re going to start peddling that to you. If he tries to fool with my Beretta, he’s got a problem.”

- VP-nominee Joe “Beretta” Biden, 2008

These lunatics may understand that they are pushing the envelope constitutionally, but I do not think they comprehend the fact that they are playing with fire.

“We are fast approaching the stage of the ultimate inversion: the stage where the government is free to do anything it pleases, while the citizens may act only by permission; which is the stage of the darkest periods of human history, the stage of rule by brute force.”

- Ayn Rand

It’s not the size of the bullet; it’s where you put it…

affenhauer on January 9, 2013 at 10:27 PM

True. You would however expect a general who commanded the Ranger Regiment to know something so basic. He is just advancing the lefts message on gun banning.

sharrukin on January 9, 2013 at 10:30 PM

When push comes to shove, I don’t think he [Obama] cares much about guns. He’d be happy to ban them, I’m sure, but my sense is that it’s not the sort of thing that drives him. What drives him is the “fairness” that comes with raising taxes by four or five percent on rich people and then doing jack about entitlements while the treasury slowly melts down from unfunded obligations.

AP is exactly right about Obama’s worldview.

I was just ribbing you. :)

I had a second cousin who I had never met before come up to me today after my great uncle’s funeral and whisper into my ear that she has an arsenal and that I should come to her property and shoot.

I love my family.

tom daschle concerned on January 9, 2013 at 10:32 PM

I always come away from these debates wondering why the two sides end up dancing around crime stats and the minutiae of what makes an assault weapon an assault weapon.

The important question is: What is the Difference between the protected arms of the Constitution right to keep and bear arms – and arbitrary defined “Assault Weapons’?

Chip on January 9, 2013 at 10:32 PM

They’d have no clue how to compensate for bullet drop or how to estimate and compensate for a crosswind. They think a “primer” is a pre-calc Cliff Notes booklet, and they think “reloaded” means something to do with The Matrix.
If it actually came down to a shooting war between gun grabbers and gun owners, the gun owners would absolutely dominate the battlefield.

GOP Rep. Jeff Duncan: Obama Using Executive Order On Gun Control Smacks Of “Dictatorship”…
http://weaselzippers.us/2013/01/09/gop-rep-jeff-duncan-obama-using-executive-order-on-gun-control-smacks-of-dictatorship/

Via TPM:

The gloves are officially off in the gun control fight in Washington. After Vice President Biden reiterated the White House intention to use executive power to reduce gun violence following the Newtown shooting, a Republican congressman warned on Wednesday the idea sounded like “dictatorship” to him.

Disastrous 2008 Proposed Gun Ban List Is Being Floated Again… (Final List Will Be Worse)
http://redflagnews.com/opinion/obamas-gun-ban-list-is-out-by-alan-korwin

Attorney General gets carte blanche to ban guns at will: Under the proposal, the U.S. Attorney General can add any “semiautomatic rifle or shotgun originally designed for military or law enforcement use, or a firearm based on the design of such a firearm, that is not particularly suitable for sporting purposes, as determined by the Attorney General.”

Note that Obama’s pick for this office, Eric Holder, wrote a brief in the Heller case supporting the position that you have no right to have a working firearm in your own home. In making this determination, the bill says, “there shall be a rebuttable presumption that a firearm procured for use by the United States military or any law enforcement agency is not particularly suitable for sporting purposes, and shall not be determined to be particularly suitable for sporting purposes solely because the firearm is suitable for use in a sporting event.” In plain English this means that ANY firearm ever obtained by federal officers or the military is not suitable for the public.

The last part is particularly clever, stating that a firearm doesn’t have a sporting purpose just because it can be used for sporting purpose — is that devious or what?

And of course, “sporting purpose” is a rights infringement with no constitutional or historical support whatsoever, invented by domestic enemies of the right to keep and bear arms to further their cause of disarming the innocent.

Too many on the right have this attitude that the leftists don’t really mean what they say. It’s the same nonsense that we see when many discuss the terrorists and they arbitrarily assign them motives despite them telling us directly that yes they want us dead.

By the same token…

Banning guns is an idea whose time has come.”

– Senator Joseph Biden, Associated Press, 18 November 1993

Yes, he really means it.

I don’t believe that people should be able to own guns.”

Barak Obama, as quoted to John R. Lott, Jr., PhD, while both were working at the University of Chicago Law School in 1996

Also Obama…

Q. Do you support state legislation to:
a. ban the manufacture, sale and possession of handguns? Yes.
b. ban assault weapons? Yes.
c. mandatory waiting periods and background checks? Yes.

But he can’t possibly mean that! /

sharrukin on January 9, 2013 at 10:44 PM

I found Morgan’s supposed “deference” to his military service insincere.

Also, regarding Feinstein (don’t know if this is in the Mediaite clip because for some reason I can’t get it to play, so I went and watched it on Youtube, and in that clip, in the intro to the interview Morgan had a clip of her saying:

“There’s no Second Amendment right to bear every type of weapon that you know of.”

B*tch apparently can’t understand basic English.

And he doesn’t want that. When push comes to shove, I don’t think he cares much about guns. He’d be happy to ban them, I’m sure, but my sense is that it’s not the sort of thing that drives him.

Uh, AP, you’ve got a little something on your chin. Might want to wipe that off.

For a liberal, there is no such thing as TOO MUCH CONTROL. As long as they are the ones IN CONTROL. Go figure.

GarandFan on January 9, 2013 at 10:48 PM

Realistically, there’s no scenario where they decide that they’ve gone far enough.

Exactly. That’s why, in Morgan’s Britain, a number of politicians during their last round of parliamentary elections were talking about knife control. No, seriously, they were. The UK is the second most violent country in the EU, their violent crime rate (both with and without firearms) has skyrocketed since 1998′s gun ban, and they’re talking about knife control.

Pope Linus on January 9, 2013 at 9:42 PM

Canada has the same problem. Knife attacks in Alberta are off the charts.

MILLER: White House goes after guns
Administration coordinates radical effort to gut Second Amendment
http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2013/jan/8/white-house-goes-after-guns/

James J. Baker, director of federal relations for the NRA’s Institute for Legislative Action, will attend the White House confab. NRA President David Keene says his organization is facing the most brazen gun-grabbing push in recent memory.

Recent polls show the public isn’t buying the gun-control arguments. “This is going to be a long and tough fight because if they cannot roll back Second Amendment rights this time, they may not get another chance for years or even decades,” Mr. Keene said.

Though the pro-gun organization will be outnumbered at Mr. Biden’s meeting, it’s really Mr. Bloomberg and his allies who are in the minority. The American public has seen crime fall as gun ownership and concealed-carry laws have been on the rise. With luck, this truth will combine with the NRA’s lobbying muscle to defeat Mr. Bloomberg’s well-funded schemes.

This is what happens when you have old brothers who ate, breathed and slept guns. Maybe not that extreme, but you get the picture. When I was about 5, one of my brothers gave me a toy Gatling gun for Christmas. Sure would be nice to have the real thing now.

Allah,
Melting down the treasury cannot be an end, only a means to an end. Consider that removing weapons from the people who love, and would die to protect, this country may also be a means to that same end.

There’ll be more mass shootings even if a new ban is enacted, and those will be cited as proof that the new ban needs to be stricter still.

Yes.

I spent some time in a European country that effectively banned the legal ownership of firearms (so that narrows it down to western Europe). There are more mass shootings now than you can shake a stick at but it’s a funny world.

An American mental case shoots up an upper-middle class school full of really cute (and white) 6 year olds = news.

Turks & Macedonians deploying fully automatic weapons and basic squad tactics in a turf war in a European city = crickets.

Now, the US has the same gang problems. But like them, we don’t really care when gangsters do a drive by in a crappy neighborhood in Chicago. It’s bad optics for a gun grab. But some mental whitey shooting cute kids = bingo. Let’s trash the 2nd ammendment.

Racists, opportunists, whatever.
