Piers Morgan: Alex Jones is the best advertisement for gun control you could wish for

posted at 4:01 pm on January 8, 2013 by Allahpundit

Last night’s cable-news car crash reminded me of how reporters used to go to tea-party rallies and seek out the nuttiest people they could find for self-discrediting quotes and photos. A cheap tactic to smear the whole group, but an effective one. Took Morgan awhile but somehow he figured out that insulting soft-spoken gun-rights advocates to their faces is less persuasive than letting a guy famous for 9/11 conspiracy theories shriek about guns and 1776 and the New World Order on camera for 15 minutes. Dave Weigel says the segment was actually proof of how lame an interviewer Morgan is since he failed to really challenge Jones at any point. I dunno. The segment was designed to be a freak show that would hopefully alienate fencesitters from the gun-rights cause. Why interrupt the star attraction during his performance? It’s like criticizing a skeptic for inviting the “experts” from “Ancient Aliens” on and then not asking thoughtful questions about aerodynamics. Just wind ‘em up and let ‘em go.

“He was the best advertisement for gun control you could wish for,” Morgan told POLITICO.

“That kind of vitriol, hatred, and zealotry is really quite scary. I didn’t feel threatened by him, but I’m concerned that someone like him has that level of influence,” Morgan said. “There’s got to be a level of discourse that can rise above what happened last night. It was undignified, unedifying.”…

“Sometimes it’s better to let somebody have the rope they need to tie themselves in knots,” Morgan told POLITICO, noting that he had been far more vocal and more passionate in previous interviews with gun advocates. According to Morgan, Jones continued ranting straight through the commercial break that divided the two-segment interview…

“He is clearly a smart guy under the craziness,” Morgan said. “Look, you could tell from the way he ranted that he’s not a stupid man. But that makes him more dangerous. There will be lots of people who follow him avidly who are not so intelligent, who believe everything he says.”

As a chaser after yesterday’s shot, skip to 2:40 and listen as Mike Bloomberg’s plot to assassinate Jones with NYPD mafia dressed as crackheads is exposed. Any follow-up questions, anyone?

Maybe, but Alex Jones is also regarded as a nut even by many conservatives. Sorry, but attempting to paint the entire right as being exactly the same as Jones ain’t gonna work. That would be like Hannity having Mike Malloy on his show and then claiming every lib in America thinks exactly like him.

You know, I’ve been following the headlines about gun control over the last month and I’m astonished at the number of “experts” that have emerged. I had no idea we had so many knowledgeable talk show hosts! I still don’t get why their opinion should help form policy that decides whether Americans should be armed, what they should be armed with, or even if they should be armed at all. Especially if it is coming from someone who isn’t even a US Citizen. Shuddup Piers!

Jones is a conspiracy nut but he crushed Pierce Morgan in this interview, not that that was any mean feat.

I loved it when Jones told Morgan to go back to Britain to answer for the hacking scandal and then asked Pierce why he was fired and had to run to CNN. LOL.

Pierce Morgan should not be welcome in this nation. He hates our Constitution and has a home that he needs to go back to. The 1st amendment isn’t fashioned to allow foreigners to come to America to spout foreign, anti-American stupidity. In fact, the Founders were very wary of the silly ideas of foreigners, whence the “natural born citizen” requirement of the Presidency, which has been waived for the Indonesian Dog-Eater (since we have different standards for 84 IQ, foreign-raised, muslim-trained imbeciles than for normal people).

nicktjacob on January 8, 2013 at 4:25 PM

Piers Morgan is a great advertisment for why we have a 2nd Amendment. We provide a 1st so the press could protect us from the government by exposing them when they do underhanded things. Well, Piers and his friends are actively covering up the underhanded things, participating in propaganda, and using their platform to participate in attacks on opposition rather than reporting the issues. This is normally a prelude to a government that is no longer responsible to the people and becomes tyrannical.

Since Piers has such a difficult time understanding American History, perhaps he should return to the U.K. because they don’t have guns there and he seems to relate much better to their laws than ours.

yea, it’s a shame. in fact, the story about bloomberg’s posse of crazed crackheads trying to assassinate him strikes me as perfectly reasonable.

sesquipedalian on January 8, 2013 at 4:28 PM

The salient point is that Alex Jones-type thinking is no different from what the gun nuts say. They both maintain that without guns in the hands of patriots, the US government – an intrinsically malevolent entity – will come to do unspeakable things to the people, and that private gun ownership is the only thing that stops the US government from doing that. That view is expressed over and over again right here on Hotair. It always comes down to that – the fear of the federal government and what they would do if they are allowed to carry out their “plan” to “disarm” the population.

So yes, that is insane. That is paranoia. And while you may not like Alex Jones for his 9/11 and Israel views, you have no problem with his views on this conspiracy.

You may not like what you see when you look into the mirror. But Alex Jones is your reflection.

darlus on January 8, 2013 at 4:23 PM

Of course. You don’t agree with an advocate but only with the specifics he might be advocating. This idea that some have that only someone who agrees with them on everything can have a specific argument taken seriously is just ridiculous. Logic is about the arguments put forth not the people putting them forth or anything else outside of the specific argument.

Leftists worship people as opposed to following individual arguments because leftism is about “empathy” and emotion rather than logic and reason. Conservatives follow arguments, not arguers.

D-fusit on January 8, 2013 at 4:43 PM

Larry Pratt of Gun Owners of America did an excellent job representing my views on the 2nd, If Piers Morgan want’s to further discussion on the topic he should invite Larry back for another drubbing.

pffff, they are all the same…

nathor on January 8, 2013 at 4:36 PM

pffff, not in the least. Leftists are emotional lunatics who have no respect for logic or law, at all. Leftists have nothing but contempt for reason, hence their “empathy” for judges and “living document” BS for a Constitution that they hate. End of story.

Take your silly and fake equivalence stupidity elsewhere.

Who is Pablo Honey?

Bmore on January 8, 2013 at 4:42 PM

Leftists troll.

All part of the whole “we need guns to commit treason” crowd.

Scared of boomsticks.

Couple points here. I don’t know what goes on in Jones’ mind, but we conservatives do this all the time. We actively discredit anyone who we think that is going to be perceived as crazy. Whereas the Democrats would never do that. For an atheist party the dems follow Jesus’ philosophy pretty much to the letter of he who is not against me is for me. Guess what? They are winning the culture war. would liberals call Sean Penn nuts? No because they realize he has a platform and can reach a segment of the population that they wouldn’t normally reach.

Many folks here at HA seem to have a misunderstanding of Allah.

Bmore on January 8, 2013 at 4:41 PM

I do not… Allahpundit is a DEFEATIST and Knee Jerk reactionary who is always looking for anything under the sun to justify his defeatism and knee jerk reaction… I think that he is surrounded by liberals at work and in his social life and he is greatly intimidated by them… This intimidation is clearly shown in his writings…

mnjg on January 8, 2013 at 4:46 PM

It’s guilt by association.

Piers Morgan is terrible. Alex Jones is terrible. Nothing much needs to be said about them.

Unfortunately(or fortunately), there has been a push in the conservative movement over the last 5 years to accuse liberals of agreeing with every idea put for by every liberal. It’s as stupid as what Piers Morgan is doing(by group those that oppose gun control with support Alex Jones).

It’s as logical.

Even without the snark, Allah is like the check and balance for reality. Allah is good at keeping proper perspective. I am not always. Its one of the things that keeps me reading him. Some folks call it Eeyore. I am guilty far to often of being the eternal optimist, believing that even the most shallow thinking leftist must see the things I see on a topic. Allah reminds me they don’t.

It’s the outright disdain. And conservatives keep wondering why they lose issue after issue. We’re criticizing a loon and you’re damn near parroting him.

segasagez on January 8, 2013 at 4:49 PM

Cleombrotus on January 8, 2013 at 4:44 PM

Yea….I rather not associate with people who think the government is out to get them and kill them. Like I said the dude needs help.

terryannonline on January 8, 2013 at 4:49 PM

Jones sounded and acted like a nut case…too bad, if he used 1/2 the words, paused, took a breath, he would have been convincing. All he did was garner the support of his supporters, and further alienate gun control advocates…it would have been better to try to win converts rather than threaten people.
Two rather boorish, loud, obnoxious fame seekers doing what they do best…blather.
