McConnell: The tax revenue issue is “finished, over, completed”

posted at 12:41 pm on January 7, 2013 by Erika Johnsen

We are now officially in “extraordinary measures”-territory, i.e. we’ve hit our $16.4 trillion debt ceiling but the Treasury Department is using roundabout methods to service the debt until approximately the end of February, and the fiscal cliff fight was only the first of a multi-stage showdown. The debt-ceiling tussle is on par to get even uglier, and I’m not holding out hope that any of the punting and dithering on real reforms will be resolved before the very last minute. Again.

The parties are clarifying their second-round starting positions, and as Ed already summarized, the Democrats are looking for even more revenue to supposedly balance Republicans’ calls for spending cuts; House Minority Leader Pelosi magnanimously informed us on Sunday that raising taxes on higher earners is still “not off the table.”

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, however, reiterated his position that the question of ‘raising revenue’ ever further is nothing-doing, and that substantive spending cuts will be the order of the day:

STEPHANOPOULOS: Well, but — but the deadlines are approaching. And I think the president has said he’s willing to engage in more discussions over the sequester and the government shutdown, but that would also include new revenues. You say that the tax debate is over.

MCCONNELL: Oh, yeah, the tax — the revenue — the tax issue is finished, over, completed. That’s behind us. Now the question is, what are we going to do about the biggest problem confronting our country and our future? And that’s our spending addiction. It’s time to confront it. The president surely knows that. I mean, he has mentioned it both publicly and privately. The time to confront it is now.

The arguments abound over who has what leverage and how much of it, but this seems to be the starting-gate we’re looking at for the next round of political theater. Who’s pumped?

“This far and not one inch further”.

For the first time EVER I enjoyed watching McConnell on the Sunday shows yesterday. This answer on the tax question is perfect. His answer on gun control was perfect. “Were working on spending that’s it” – Every trick questions the liberal press throws at them come back with the same answer. SPENDING !

McConnell: The tax revenue issue is “finished, over, completed”

:( You poor, ignorant b@stard…

McConnell & even Boehner has stated there will be a ‘fight’ over raising the debt ceiling, again provig both their ignorance & under-estimation of Obama. Obama has already declared there will be NO DEBATE on raising the debt ceiling, that he will not let ‘Congress default on paying their obligations’…or even THREATENING to delay doing so through a ‘debt ceiling limit fight’…

I hope I am wrong, but I believe Obama will bypass Congress & do something – declare the power to do so by citing/perverting the 14th Ammendment or through Executive Order – to get whatever ghe wants in regards to the debt ceiling & possibly even raising taxes at the same time as well.

Obama can’t spend anything the House doesn’t give him. The game plan should be to:
1) Get what you can on Debt Limit and move on,
2) Let the Sequester happen,
3) Make their stand on the Budget and Continuing Resolution. If the Senate won’t pass a budget shut down the government.

easyt65 on January 7, 2013 at 12:46 PM

If Obama does this it would be grounds for open rebellion, and I think even he isn’t stupid enough or power mad enough to risk that.

If Obama were to actually raise taxes to the point that would fund his monstrous leviathan with a balanced budget that would also touch off rebellion (tax rates would be far in excess of 50%) and he knows this.

His goal is to raise taxes enough to destroy conservatives by making everyone dependent on the State, yet keep the economy limping enough enough to gain enough revenues to keep borrowing for a few years longer. Think reducing the deficit to half a trillion a year instead of a trillion. Doing that would probably make the credit agencies happy and keep bonds floating for another decade.

With trillion dollar deficits as far as the eye can see we are on the precipice of collapse that could happen at any moment… When the dollar and the bonds collapse the air falls out from under the Regime and they know it.

wildcat72 on January 7, 2013 at 12:52 PM

(Obama/Liberals have already, by the way, placed 2 automatic debt ceiling increases – that go into effect without Congress even voting for them – in the Obama Tax Bill that was just passed. They raise the debt ceiling limit by a total of $900 BILLION if no debt ceiling limit agreement is reached by Congress / the GOP & Obama….)

KOOLAID2 on January 7, 2013 at 12:56 PM

Time to “just say no.”

Dear Democrats: here’s the deal: cut spending or we don’t raise the debt limit. Try an end run around the debt limit and we shut down the government altogether (no budget, no continuing resolution).

For every dollar increase in the debt limit, you must provide a dollar of spending cuts from the current budget. When you’ve done that, we’ll talk. Until you’ve done that, have a nice day.

I’m fine with it except that every single Republican needs to be out there saying that the rat-eared wonder and his party are falsely making this next round out to be a crisis when it really doesn’t have to be. All that needs happen is that the Dems come to the table with legitimate and real cuts to entitlement programs. Those cuts will then be deliberated in the House and Senate by normal order instead of backroom deals. But normal order takes time so if the rat-eared wonder is serious about needing the debt ceiling raised then he better come to the table earlier rather than later because without those cuts; the government is going to run out of money and will have to shut down.

Happy Nomad on January 7, 2013 at 12:58 PM

It’s a shame that your own party elected leaders lie to you as bad as President Obama.

Let me get this straight Obama insists on tax increases or we go over the debt ceiling and THIS TIME McConnell and Boehner don’t give in.

Rush had an interesting segment on how these guys throw away core issue after core issue promising that the next time they are going to hang tough on what really matters. You can expect on immigration, entitlement reform, gay marriage, government paid abortion, etc because we will be told we need to get down to what really matters…spending..and then when they cave on that we will be told we can’t have this argument while the economy is fragile so that means the next 4 years where we have no recovery and that we need to win in 2016 (see 2012 for this speech from McConnell) for our poor party leaders to get things done. They can’t do anything until they have all 3 parts of government and oh course it will be the Tea Party’s fault when they don’t get their majorities and people stay home or refuse to follow.

Conan on January 7, 2013 at 12:58 PM

Don’t you get the feel, if we were ever at war, McConnell would be the first to rat us out and jump to the other side.

Nothing will ever change until McConnell & boner are out. Further, the bushies at the RNC and throughout the party have to go.

The establishment GOP filth who make a fine living no matter if we win or lose are destroying the party. If you don’t obey them they will destroy you- see Palin.

The establishment have no principle. In fact the bigger government, the more these azzes get paid.

Between lobbyist, establishment crud etc.. they are in too deep to fix. A new conservative party is needed, with new leaders. That can’t be co-opted like the tea party was by the GOP permanent class disease.

Oh, yeah, the tax — the revenue — the tax…

Just stick with “tax.” I know the pressure inside the beltway to use media approved jargon is immense, but stop calling it “revenue.” Hell, we should throw out some catchphrases of our own. Start calling it….”tribute” or “The People’s Money,” I don’t know, something catchy and really insulting.

Dongemaharu on January 7, 2013 at 1:02 PM

When will so-called conservatives realize that if it weren’t for the Fed and their counterfeiting, as well as the progressive income tax, then this issue wouldn’t exist? No, instead Republicans talk of “revenue neutral” or “reform” instead of elimination. Why? Because they’re complicit and seek the same goals.

I take it back, there are some taxes that can go up:

1: End the Hollywood Tax Cuts.

2: End the deductibility of state income tax.

3: Eliminate the ability of rich people to avoid the death tax by putting their money into family “foundations.” IOW, Mr. Bill Gates Sr. should lose his cushy position at the Gates Foundation.

4: End the non-profit scam. Require every non-profit with an endowment to spend at least 10% of its endowment each year on taxable activities that advance the non-profit’s “purpose”. IOW, donations to other “non-profits” don’t count, salaries for directors, administrators, etc. don’t count. Rent for offices, buying furniture, paying for junkets, I mean conferences, doesn’t count.

Yes, 10% of the endowment, not just of income. Either they provide services so valuable that people will give money to keep them going, or else they go away.

I think we can easily say that isn’t gonna happen… Wishing for it, but wishes don’t come true…

Mitch, you and all the other RINOs are deluded dumbasses. You live in a world that no longer exists. Obama plans to destroy you, naive dimwit.

Rush is correct. Our country club RINOs have absolutely no clue about Emperor Obama. They are as deluded as the UK’s Chamberlain.

dogsoldier on January 7, 2013 at 1:03 PM

That’s what you get for listening to an establsihment water carrier. First of all, they aren’t RINOs; they ARE the Republican wing of the One Establishment War Party. They aren’t deluded.

The only naive thought is believing that Republicans desire different outcomes than the Democrats.

Employers are not willing to go to jail by witholding extra tax money from their employees pay checks to satisfy an illegal and unconstitutional executive orders…

I’m to the point where I want ugly. The GOP has caved time and time again to avoid “getting blamed” for an ugly situation. And then they get blamed all the same. It’s as if they are forever asking Lucy to hold the football for them and then being shocked at the outcome.

Well, I’m to the point that I want the war. “Increased revenue” and “increased taxes” are not the same.

This was clearly demonstrated in Wisconsin when new jobs were created and revenue increased (because more people were working) but the tax rate had not changed.

Revenue often increases when tax rates go down, boosting the economy and increasing the velocity of money.

Daisy_WI on January 7, 2013 at 1:26 PM

I prefer “discourage and penalize success.” It doesn’t just affect those who are already successful, but those who hope to be.

besser tot als rot on January 7, 2013 at 1:21 PM

Well, that would work too. The point is that the GOP has too often going along with letting the enemy define the terminology and “facts” without ever challenging them. IMO, the biggest mistake the Romney campaign made was sticking to the economy instead of going out after the Dems when whores like Sandra Fluke were out there making outrageous claims about the GOP wanting to ban abortions, or that Obama called the Benghazi attack terrorism from the beginning, or whatever. In short, you don’t leave any issue to the wisdom and intellect of the American people because November 6th proved that we are a nation of parasitic idiots. Too many greedy stupid people truly believed the GOP wanted to outlaw abortions because the left kept making the claim and the right did not respond.

Happy Nomad on January 7, 2013 at 1:27 PM

Yet somehow government agencies and employees *have been* carrying out his unconstitutional executive orders for a few years now.

You’re confidence is higher than mine – and probably ill-placed.

Midas on January 7, 2013 at 1:21 PM

Not when the unconstitutional of the executive order is in the magnitude of raising taxes on people without going through the only authority that can make taxes and that is Congress… Even the liberal court will quickly strike down this executive order because it is so blatantly unconstitutional…

mnjg on January 7, 2013 at 1:28 PM

Despite the MSM assistance, Obama’s approval rating is down and going lower. With taxes going up on everybody, the electorate finding out what’s in Obama care, the push for gun control and a probable over reach on immigration, the term lame-duck my be here sooner than we expect.

One can hope so. Regrettably, his public approval rating probably is irrelevant. One of my co-workers hasn’t approved of much of what Barry has done, but yet had no hesitation in voting for his re-election, approving less of Romney.

She’ll grumble and complain about what his re-election will soon cost her financially, but won’t ever pin it on him.

3 million crack heads;
42 million people on food stamps,
2 million people in over 243 prisons; and
535 persons in the U.S. House and Senate, plus

The gop leadership is either profoundly stupid or evil accomplices.

PappyD61 on January 7, 2013 at 1:09 PM

Pappy, your elation at the idea that the GOP is ‘dead’ perplexes me to no end & leaves me with the conclussion that you are quite possibly too $tupid to understand that the GOP has been the only thing preventing Obama/Democrats from engaging in wholesale scandal, violations of the Constitution, massive un-checked deficit-spending, and the complete & utter decline of the US as we have and continue to know it.

Do you understand that the Democrats have BROKEN THE LAW by refusing to pass a budget…

Do you understand that Obama has added more debt than almost EVERY US PRESIDENT IN OUR HISTORY…COMBINED…that when he said he wanted to pass this last bill that was intended to keep spending at the current level, pay off $1.6 Trillion, & raise taxes on ‘the rich’ what it REALLY DID was ADD $3.8 Trillion to the deficit, INCREASED deficit spending, & raised taxes on 77% of ALL Americans….

Do you understand that the Democrats CONTINUE to waste TRILLIONS in added deficit & tax-payer-funded dollars, as seen in the pork-packed Sandy Relief Bill, DESPITE having already amassed an unsurmountable, unrecoverable amount of debt & coinciding INTEREST, an amount that we will NEVER be able to pay off, & that will make us the only generation that not only has left its children LESS off than we were left with but the only/possibly LAST generation to NOT leave our children A NATION….leaving them with a debt that many recognize could end the United States?

You DO realize, don’t you, that all those benefits for which Americans sold out their nation & their souls in this last election WILL CEASE TO EXIST WHEN THIS NATION CEASES TO EXIST, AFTER THE ECONOMIC COLLAPSE THAT IS MOST PROBABLY COMING AFTER THE CRIMINALLY FISCALLY IRRESPONSIBLE WAY OBAMA/DEMOCRATS HAVE HANDLED OUR ECONOMY? There will be NO MORE ‘free ride’ when the nation collapses, something only the GOP seems to understand and is attempting to prevent – Obama, through this last bill, did not slow the car down but instead stomped on the gas pedal to send us over ‘the cliff’ faster…

which is why I do not understand your elation at the potential demise of this country….

You remind me of the evil white wizard in the 2nd Lord of the Rings movie….he saw the evil coming & even believed there was no way to survive it, so he sold his soul & the rest of the world out believing it was better to join the winning side than go down fighting for good with the rest of the world….he falsely believed that in the end this malevolent evil with such hunger that it was willing to destroy the whole world would SHARE that power with him…The truth is you can join the malevolent ‘evil’ in hopes you can sit at his feet at the table & live off the merciful scraps that fall from that table if you want…but don’t expect the conquerors/destroyers to invite you to the table.

Politicians make laws that apply to US, not them – they play political games over our lives without ever considering us as PEOPLE….YOU, and I, are nothing more than checkerboard pieces. As Pelosi said, I am ‘agnostic’ about where the new rumored $1 Trillion tax increases comes from…In other words, ‘we’ will keep spending & to do so we need more revenue (taxes_ – I don’t care who it comes from or how badly it hurts those beneath me as long as we continue to squeeze them to pay for our spending)….that includes YOU, Pappy – whether you are actually a ‘Democrat’ or a ‘Republican’, your @r$e is gonna pay up just like everyone else when they decide to squeeze you…if no one is there to prevent them from doing so.

In celebrating the GOP’s ‘death’ you celebrate the end of the US & the end of your/others’ ‘gravy train’…

The GOP has prevented Obama from violating the constituion? Are you serious?

Second – for fifty years the GOP has talked about spending and never done it a single time. Why should we believe them now? G.W. Bush ran on a platform of less government – and he gave us No Child Left Behind PLUS Medicare Part D – which was an unfunded entitlement that even the Dims were envious of.

Please man, please.

It’s time to killoff the GOP – they are losers and have never produced a single thing. You can say that well, things would be worse without them – but then again … the nation has done NOTHING but move left for the last half century and the GOP hasn’t been able to stop it.
