Paper which outed gun owners endangering prison guards

posted at 11:31 am on January 5, 2013 by Jazz Shaw

When the local, Upstate New York newspaper The Journal News decided to take it upon themselves to publish the names and addresses of gun permit holders in their area, I’m sure that some of them felt they were performing a “public service” in some twisted way. Despite massive protests and demands that Gannet take action, the paper has stood by the decision. But who were they trying to target? Certainly not criminals, who tend not to take the whole gun registration process very seriously to begin with. Lawful gun owners? That’s a pretty easy argument to make. But I wonder if the editors knew that they might be endangering the lives of prison guards and their families?

Law enforcement officials from a New York region where a local paper published a map identifying gun owners say prisoners are using the information to intimidate guards.

Rockland County Sheriff Louis Falco, who spoke at a news conference flanked by other county officials, said the Journal News’ decision to post an online map of names and addresses of handgun owners Dec. 23 has put law enforcement officers in danger.

“They have inmates coming up to them and telling them exactly where they live. That’s not acceptable to me,” Falco said, according to Newsday.

When this story first broke, there was an obvious invitation for a snarky response of, “what could possibly go wrong?” Well this is what could possibly go wrong, and already has. As Fox News goes on to correctly note, a lot of the guards are from the greater New York City area and commute up to work at the prison. They live in areas with a disturbingly large gang presence, and criminals can read the news as well as anyone else. If a prisoner has a gripe with any particular guard and gets the word out to their friends on the outside, knowing right where the guards live would certainly be an opportunity for the bad guys.

One rather famous former criminal, Walter Shaw (no relation, sorry) was interviewed about this debacle and offered a bit of perspective from the dark side.

That was the most asinine article I’ve ever seen,” said Walter T. Shaw, 65, a former burglar and jewel thief who the FBI blames for more than 3,000 break-ins that netted some $70 million in the 1960s and 1970s. “Having a list of who has a gun is like gold – why rob that house when you can hit the one next door, where there are no guns?

“What they did was insanity,” added Shaw, author of “License to Steal,” a book about his criminal career.

The editors have also proven that while they may not be bullet-proof, they are completely oblivious to the concept of irony. In perhaps the most farcical aspect of this sordid tale to date, the newspaper has hired armed guards to protect at least one of their offices. I suppose they must think that the best way to stop a bad guy with a gun is to have a good guy with a gun, huh? What a crazy idea.

Surely all of this must have some of the knee-jerk state legislators around the nation rethinking the whole idea, right? Apparently not, as one elected official in Connecticut is looking to up the ante.

State Rep. Stephen Dargen, a Democratic legislator from West Haven, wants the names and addresses of about 170,000 handgun permit holders in the state to be made public.

Names of gun owners are now confidential, but Dargen believes if people know how many guns are spread across communities, they’ll be safer.

Exit question: Even if you’re the gun grabbiest editor of a small distribution newspaper in the country, how was a result like this not blindingly obvious?

What about judges, surely the crew of the gangbanger who just got sentenced to 20 years should be allowed to know the address of the judge who handed that down and whether or not the judge owns a gun, right?

Names of gun owners are now confidential, but Dargen believes if people know how many guns are spread across communities, and who owns them and where they live, non-gun owners will be easier to target for home invasions, and gun owners’ guns can be stolen when no one’s home.

The idea was to intimidate gun owners, maybe start a few arguments between neighbors, so gun owners might be browbeaten to give up their weapons by people saying they don’t want guns in their neighborhoods any more than they want pedophiles.

That’s as far as it went, I think; liberals are not known for thinking things through to their ultimate possible conclusions.

The ugly side to GIS. This is a field I am going into – basically modern mapping using comptuers (it’s in everything and will get even more pervasive over the years to come).

All of the census maps? GIS. All of the campaign maps from this past year? GIS. All of the ways the Obama campaign figured out their voters? GIS. That is to say, GIS takes all of that data and turns it into a map with many facets and layers.

The paper either had someone on staff use GIS software or they contracted with some firm to do the work for them. This is already getting me to think about what I’ll be asked to do in the coming years.

they need to sue the paper and the agency that released the names and addresses, they violated at least 1 law for sure(the Freedom of information law (state) and possibly two more(freedom of information act – federal and the privacy act of 1974 – federal) all those laws exempt names and addresses from release. if you say freedom of the press should not apply, like freedom of speech does not cover yelling fire in a crowded theater.

Like Akzed said, they want chaos going on. I think the hope of those editors was that many irate neighbors would show up at the gun owner’s door, not just one. Except normal, mentally-healthy people don’t knock on an armed man’s door as part of a mob to try shoving him around.

Liberals think that just because someone doesn’t own a pistol, it means he doesn’t own any guns at all. That newspaper only outed those with pistol permits, because in NY long guns don’t require a permit.

So, what’s the public benefit for registering guns again?

Remember, convicted criminals can’t be prosecuted for possessing an un-registered firearm (see: Haynes v. US), so punishment can only be applied to people who have no criminal record.

I’ve yet to hear a cogent argument for registration laws, other than liberals like to harass gun owners and want to know where the guns are when it’s time to confiscate them.

FIFY

Liberals are the undisputed champions of unintended consequences and then double down by never learning. To say this was stupid is an insult to stupidity – say it with me – the difference between genius and stupidity is that genius has it’s limits. I am used to liberals and their knee jerk reactions to things because they are so enlightened and caring and in tune with their feelings. But when they move from the realm of idiocy to being flat out dangerous; that tears it. Hopefully lawyers are lining up to sue these hypocritical morons out of existence for the reckless endangerment they have perpetrated in the guise of journalism.

I fully expect to more baiting by the libs in an effort to provoke “extremist” behavior by gun owners. I further expect Obama to make yet another end run around the Constitution on this subject to the cheers of his fellow liberals who increasingly clamor for getting rid of that pesky old document that stands in their way of making a liberal utopia.

Liam on January 5, 2013 at 12:17 PM

How did those newspaper people not know the harm they were doing by publishing the names and addresses of legal gun owners? The fact is, they didn’t care. All that mattered to them was doing something to make themselves look and feel virtuous (and smug; don’t underestimate how people like that enjoy their smug). They didn’t care who it would hurt, because to them, gun owners deserve to be hurt anyway.

The only way to make them care, is for the named gun owners (including, and especially, corrections officers) to get together and file a class action suit against Gannet, for endangering the public (because legitimate gun owners are part of the public, no?), and for emotional distress. I bet there’s a law firm somewhere in New York just salivating to take that on.

Some of this reaction is a little overboard since this information was already publicly available. If the prisoners or gangs wanted to, they could have requested this information on their own. So this isn’t like publishing private information like which women have had abortions or who has AIDS, since that would be publicizing previously unpublicized information.

That being said, this of course made it easier for prisoners and others to access this information.

Has one republican EVER questioned the motives of the Left and why they want our guns so badly? We always jawbone about the rights of Americans to hunt and defend themselves, but has ANY Republican ever formed a rational and historical indictment of the Left and its history of gun control and confiscation, the ideological reasons behind it and the results it has produced?

The left and its politicians constantly attack and impugn the basic nature and motives of conservatives — wildly, emotionally and with complete impunity. Conservatives on the other hand NEVER question or even historically trace the motives of Leftists, or even define leftism.

We’re not so much losing a war, as not even engaging it. We are on track to lose our guns and our rights.

A fricking newspaper published the information! What don’t you get?

The difference is if you personally got the info for yourself, as opposed to letting everyone in that city/county/state now know where the guns are and are not!

Are you that dense?

Exit question: Even if you’re the gun grabbiest editor of a small distribution newspaper in the country, how was a result like this not blindingly obvious?

sweartogod, it must be on the application for this place, ‘are you willing to give political scum miles and miles of leeway and benefit of a doubt, before you say something completely tepid about them?’

The Journal’s intent this time was the same as it was 6yrs ago, same as scum at the Roanoke Times, at the Memphis paper, at the Humboldt paper etc – to cause harm to gun owners. To harass gun owners. To attempt to shame gun owners. It has NEVER been about ‘public safety’ or any bullshit ‘right to know’. It’s a political stunt by leftist scum, seeking to force their sick disarmament ideology upon us all, and it needs to be retaliated against. And in a manner so devastating that the NEXT giant leftist POS that thinks about doing a FOIA for gun owner REGISTRATION info checks themselves and shudders at what a stupid idea they just had.
And a writeup clucking about the gaucherie ISN’T going to engender that kind of reaction.

d1carter on January 5, 2013 at 1:27 PM

Some of this reaction is a little overboard since this information was already publicly available. If the prisoners or gangs wanted to, they could have requested this information on their own. So this isn’t like publishing private information like which women have had abortions or who has AIDS, since that would be publicizing previously unpublicized information.

That being said, this of course made it easier for prisoners and others to access this information.

tneloms on January 5, 2013 at 12:41 PM

No, the reaction isn’t overboard. Here’s why: No prisoner would be allowed to have the information mailed to him, if the county clerk had any sense or wits about him when he saw the return address. I think even a squeaky-clean citizen, perhaps even a cop, couldn’t get the whole register, either, without a valid law enforcement reason.

The stink is that the newspaper abused its power and position to get the information, to willfully and maliciously out people where common sense dictates it shouldn’t have done such a thing. Endorsing a particular candidate for office is one thing. But taking an active role this way in a political matter–in a dangerously risky move–is over the top.

More offensive in this matter, far as I’m concerned, is that the editors stubbornly refuse to back off and keep pressing forward despite public outcry against them. Adding further insult to injury, they hired a private firm to supply armed security for their offices.

It’s the dogged stubbornness of liberals that forever remains so offensive in light of their own actions. Liberals never say, “We made out point.” No! They just keep needling and pushing. Then they cry foul and claim victim status when outcry turns to revulsion.

The paper didn’t have to do this. But it did and, despite what the editors and other liberals think, not everyone is going to roll over and play possum.

Dargen believes if people know how many guns are spread across communities, they’ll be safer.

GarandFan on January 5, 2013 at 1:40 PM

For liberals, their assertions are enough to convince them.

Liberals never wonder why their assertions fail every test of fact, reason, logic, and statistics. The thing about which they invariably wonder is why so many people question them, why so many debate what they have decided could only possibly be true.

Nor will you ever see a map of the security company employees that provide protection for the media elites.

“Gun control for thee, but not for me.”

MichaelGabriel on January 5, 2013 at 2:12 PM

I further expect Obama to make yet another end run around the Constitution on this subject to the cheers of his fellow liberals who increasingly clamor for getting rid of that pesky old document that stands in their way of making a liberal utopia.

ghostwalker1 on January 5, 2013 at 12:17 PM

The problem with this hypothesis is that the liberals took over the law (along with education and the media) decades ago. They are almost all liberals. That is why the Democrats only have lawyers to nominate for President (Obama, Bill Clinton, Hillary Clinton, Kerry, Gore, etc. are all lawyers). The Number One Rule in anything is vote against the lawyer.

fadetogray on January 5, 2013 at 2:30 PM

For the liberal Hollywood elites who argue that film violence does not promote real violence, a reminder:

John Hinckley, Jr. attempted to assassinate U.S. President Ronald Reagan in Washington, D.C., on March 30, 1981, as the culmination of an effort to impress teen actress Jodie Foster.

Hinckley became obsessed with the 1976 film Taxi Driver, in which a disturbed protagonist, Travis Bickle, played by Robert De Niro, plots to assassinate a presidential candidate. He watched the film 15 times in a row on a continuous loop. Hinckley developed an infatuation with actress Jodie Foster, who played a child prostitute in the film.

MichaelGabriel on January 5, 2013 at 2:33 PM

Liberals in the media seem to have a “death wish” as they continue to give the finger to the average citizen. Hopefully, the Journal News “death wish” will be granted soon when it ceases publication.
