...meanwhile I am trying to find a replacement system for the 75 watt bulb I kept near oil tank filter that I turned on when it was below 0F out to prevent gelling.
meanwhile the loss of heat from me stupidly swapping to cfl 2-3 yrs ago makes my furnace run more in winter.

Where the 75 watt bulb was doing a good job for you, you need to get a double light fixture and put it in your single light fixture, and you can put 25 watt in one, and 50 watt in the other...

Or just put 50 watts in each.

I have cfl in my basement, they look dumb but no one lives there, except mice who don't live long there, and I put them there because it is silly to pay to light the basement all night...or for days...if someone leaves it on and no one goes there. They also last a really long time, so I don't think they will go out while I live here. The light they shed is putrid, though, like morning sickness.

I am looking for some new matching lamps, now that 50 watts are all you can get, I am going to get lots of twin lamps,(matching sets)like those pairs you get for the bedroom.

What a stoopid idea, telling people they can't have a nice light bulb in their house. Now must be the time to stock up on 50 watts...are they going out of style too?

And, by the way, if we applied the same level of scrutiny to incandescent light bulbs, you’d probably have a heart attack at the toxic chemicals let loose when you break one of those things.

Like what? Inert gas? Tungsten? There aren't any chemicals, because that's all an incandescent bulb is: glass, inert gas, a high-resistance metal wire. There are plenty of chemicals used in their manufacture, but that's true of most manufacturing.

The point of all the toxic chemicals being in LEDs is that when they get disposed of, people will pitch them in the regular garbage in job lots. Just like they do now with way too many things. Then you have a problem.

The other problem with LEDs is the same one many folks here mention about CFLs - they produce negligible heat. Stoplights are having to have little heaters installed now because where the incandescents use to keep snow and ice from covering the light, the LEDs don't.
