The 2012 OOTY is …

posted at 12:31 pm on January 1, 2013 by Ed Morrissey

… the one you built, of course:

This one was the overwhelming pick in the final OOTY poll.  It got 62.14% of the 4,300 votes cast; the runner-up was Barack Obama’s sudden realization that the founders created a system where sudden change is impossible, and that only got 18%.  Interestingly, the one I had originally thought might carry the day — “The private sector is doing fine” — came in last, with just 3.72% of the vote.

As for the context of this Obamateurism, I’ll go back to what I wrote at the time:

Actually, had Obama not been so ham-fisted in his construction, he would have had a good point about the balance between liberty and the government that secures it.  We do need to have roads and bridges and the like that allow sellers and buyers to find each other; we need some regulation to prevent fraud and theft, in order to make markets operate efficiently and honestly. Our system of constitutional self-government provides a framework that allows for enough governance to provide those necessary checks without becoming overbearing, and without government distorting those markets for the preferred outcomes of elites rather than the outcomes decided by voluntary associations in the marketplace.

Unfortunately, we have deviated far down the latter path for decades, and Obama wants to go even farther down a road that leads to economic stagnation and the stunting of liberty.  That path also leads to the arrogance and ignorance on display when a politician who has never operated his own business or worked in any significant manner in the private sector tells people who took enormous risks to start their own businesses that “you didn’t build that” and “someone else made that happen.”  Of course the business owner built the business and was primarily the one that “made it happen”; without someone willing to take the risk, businesses wouldn’t get built at all.

Obama took an opportunity to make a good point and booted it into the realm of clueless-elite satire.  And he did it in a prepared speech.  Whether or not it took a White House village to create that speech, Obama made it, and this Obamateurism, happen.

At the time, Obama complained that his remarks were taken out of context, but the context actually made it worse:

The context which Obama claims is that he was talking about small business owners not building the infrastructure, not their businesses.  But who pays for infrastructure?  Government doesn’t pull the money off the magic trees of the Progressive Sunshine Forest; they take capital from taxpayers, either current or (increasingly) future taxpayers.  Small businesses generate a large amount of that tax base, thanks to the point-of-sale transactions conducted and the labor they use, as well as property taxes and the like.  If anyone should get credit for the infrastructure for successful markets, it’s the small businessman.  Even in context, Obama and Elizabeth Warren treat small businesses like parasites rather than the foundation for the economy which makes all their beloved infrastructure possible at all.

As usual, OOTY voters have chosen … wisely.

Previous Obamateurisms of the Year:

  • Giving 2 minutes of “shout-outs” before getting to the Fort Hood shooting (2009)
  • Obama leaves Clinton at press conference podium on tax deal to attend Christmas party (2010)
  • “I would put our legislative and foreign policy accomplishments in our first two years against any president— with the possible exceptions of Johnson, F.D.R., and Lincoln.” (2011)

For more on the history and end of the OOTDs, here’s my post from November 9th.

The philosophical origin of the “private sector” line is the “you didn’t build that” line. In my view, a vote for one counts for both.

“Make no mistake.” I agree with you.

And since a majority of voters did make a mistake in November we’re all stuck with the result. If only it was Obama we’re saying good-bye to instead of Ed’s Obamateurisms…

Drained Brain on January 1, 2013 at 12:47 PM

Obama’s domestic policy in a nutshell: Regulate business and tax the rich until everyone is poor, business is crippled and the country is bankrupted.

Obama’s foreign policy in a nutshell: America is too powerful and American influence is evil, so reduce American power and influence to irrelevancy.

The end.

Apparently, a majority of Americans will ignore our downward spiral into oblivion until the food stamps and unemployment bennies run out, the Obamaphone won’t take a charge and the TV is turned off permanently, at which point it will be too late. The consequences will be vastly greater suffering than the idiotic architects of disaster could ever imagine they were preventing.

Happy New Year!

Obama was taken out of context. What he meant to say was, “I’m a frickin’ communist, and I’m out to destroy capitalism in this country. But you can’t do anything about it because I’ve got the election rigged. Now go live the crappy peon life you deserve while the royalty enjoys your earnings.”

The Rogue Tomato on January 1, 2013 at 12:53 PM

itsnotaboutme on January 1, 2013 at 12:54 PM

It was not a random, poorly-chosen phrase, it was calculated. He claimed that it was out of context only because it was poorly received and ridiculed. But he said exactly what he intended to say.

From Oleg Atbashian:

Socialism is not just about taking away your money; it’s also about making you praise the takers as your saviors. You are expected to feel good about being robbed of opportunities, talents, and success. You must agree that “you didn’t build that.” There must be a popular consensus that the crumbs you are getting back from the government are a sign of caring and largess — not a meager fraction of your actual earnings.

All part of the plan, people. These crafty spiders are patient, and spin their web with specific intent.

The GOP Leadership’s betrayal of America.

SWalker on January 1, 2013 at 1:18 PM

Those heading the party have no incentive or desire to be of wide distinction from Democrats. There are a lot of people who vote Republican because their fathers did; even Rush won’t abandon being a Republican despite his disdain for the elites running the party. On top of that, Tea Party House members are few in number, not enough to make a difference in any policies (or BS) the ‘leadership’ proposes.

If by some miracle the Pubs start losing members in droves who start a new, much-more Conservative party, the Pubs and Dems will likely merge. The elites want their money and power as much as do Dems, so any new party will lose elections in landslides not even Reagan’s victories will match.

We effectively have one-party rule and are heading to a two-class society. They don’t have to be socialists or fascists. I wonder if any ideology actually matters to them. But being in an exclusive club that is politics today is what they want to maintain.

Philly on January 1, 2013 at 2:46 PM

Well, my problem with this one is that sometimes he is correct.

Many whole industries have been created to enable compliance with government created regulations and tort liability.

The “FemiNazi” who is hired to lecture new hires about sexual harassment (she may have a gay male associate who adds elements against everyone standing in the way of the inherently superior gay lifestyle)
Your environmental and OSHA compliance consultants fit here too, as well as most company in-house lawyers and much of the corporate lawyer industry.

The common thread is that most of them are led by Bosses from State or Ivy League colleges. And protected by more “consultants” and lobbyists who are, of course, lawyers.

And our President’s circle of acquaintances includes many people of these circumstances.

novaculus on January 1, 2013 at 12:47 PM

The reasons are clear:
(1) EQUALITY (of outcome) is what animates The Left; and
(2) MARXISM (to survive) must occur at a global level.

You can never lift everyone, via persuasion and/or coercion, to the level of a Steve Jobs or a Bill Gates. All you can do is, via persuasion and/or coercion, tear down everyone to the lowest common denominator (to the emotional, intellectual, psychological, physical, and spiritual level of the emptiest of the empty — like, say, a Barack Obama himself).

Additionally, you can not allow individual liberty to take hold anywhere lest people flee toward it (and you have to build a wall or something to keep them in).

Of course, in their Animal Farm utopia SOME PEOPLE have to be more equal than others; thus, “Four legs good, two legs bad” always morphs into “Four legs good, two legs better!”

ShainS on January 1, 2013 at 6:09 PM

I’m not the slightest bit surprised that this won. Obama’s ludicrous statement attacked what may be the real heart of America … that Americans did build businesses and wealth and invented and created…..

This has been the beauty of America – that we who live here have had the freedoms and the resources and the rule of law so that we could build ourselves. It goes without saying that the strength and freedom of our nation gave us the base on which to build. Nevertheless, it really has been each and every person who has worked like a dog and scrimped and saved and battled and created to build something wonderful.

That Obama didn’t get it then and really still doesn’t get it demonstrates how ridiculous it is that he is our president. Hang in there, America! One day he won’t be in charge. Let’s hope that by then, we Americans will have come to our senses and will start voting for more politicians who appreciate that yes, we really and truly did build that.

Interestingly, the one I had originally thought might carry the day — “The private sector is doing fine” — came in last, with just 3.72% of the vote.

Though it finished last, it was my second choice behind the winner, “You didn’t build that.” Both of the statements are similar. “You didn’t build that” just went to the heart of the POTUS’ lack of understanding of the economy in a sharper, more personal way than the “private sector” statement.

I, too, will miss the OOTD feature. The reasoning that he’s in his second term and no longer an amateur is certainly sound, but that doesn’t mean he isn’t going to continue to do stupid things every day. How about a rip off of David Letterman’s “Great Moments in Presidential History” spoof that he did daily, throughout both of W’s terms as I recall?

It could feature Reagan’s, “Mr. Gorbechev: Tear down this Wall” statement as the main lead-in to whatever idiotic statement or action seems best for any particular day.
