Video: Hillary Clinton hospitalized with a blood clot

posted at 12:31 pm on December 31, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

The focus on Hillary Clinton’s health took a strange turn yesterday, when the State Department announced that the outgoing Secretary of State had become an inpatient at New York Presbyterian Hospital, after a routine follow-up to her concussion revealed that she had developed a blood clot. The news took everyone by surprise, leading to a burst of speculation about her health and her prognosis, both medically and politically:

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was hospitalized Sunday after doctors discovered a blood clot during a follow-up exam related to a concussion she suffered this month, her spokesman said.

She is expected to remain at New York Presbyterian Hospital for the next 48 hours so doctors can monitor her condition and treat her with anti-coagulants, said Philippe Reines, deputy assistant secretary of state.

“Her doctors will continue to assess her condition, including other issues associated with her concussion,” Reines said. “They will determine if any further action is required.”

CNN seemed nonplussed by the news:

This started the usual speculation among skeptics on the Right about this being another Congressional-testimony avoidance tactic by Clinton, who has now put off an appearance before the committees investigating the “sloppiness” at State that led to the deaths of four Americans in Benghazi.  I’d be skeptical of that explanation, though.  Hillary doesn’t need to use medical issues to avoid testifying at this point any longer; two of her deputies have already testified in her place, and she’ll be retired within a couple of weeks at the latest. Don’t expect the pressure for testimony to outweigh her exit.

The skepticism doesn’t appear limited to the Right, however.  Kent Sepkowitz expresses a significant amount of skepticism over the vague announcement at the Daily Beast, speculating that it hides a more significant health issue than the Clintons want to admit:

Unlike the relatively bland “concussion after fainting” pronouncement from earlier this month, this terse press release from her spokesman smells a little fishy. First it is odd that we are not told where the clot is—usually the clot, referred to as thrombophlebitis, occurs in the leg, a condition suffered by former president Richard Nixon after leaving the White House. The clot can be uncomfortable but is only dangerous and even life-threatening if it breaks free and travels downstream into the lung—a pulmonary embolus, in medical parlance. This is a condition that former vice president Dan Quayle developed soon after his term ended and that almost killed Serena Williams last year. Given that Clinton already has had this condition and those who have had one episode have a predilection to recurrence, the lack of a reminder of the 1998 clot from her press people seems a strange oversight.

Another problem with the “concussion then clot” story is this—the concussion, if indeed it came after a faint, should not directly predispose Clinton to a clot. Trauma to the leg or to the hips and pelvis might cause a clot, but we were not told of any leg injury. If there is no predisposing trauma—well, that might mean real trouble. “Trousseau’s sign” refers to a clot that forms in persons with cancer due to a tendency seen in many common cancers to readily form clots.

Alternatively, is it possible that the clot in question is one in the lining of the brain that can form after head trauma. She did have a concussion after some sort of impact to her head. Here, again, there is a presidential precedent. Ronald Reagan, soon after the end of his time in the hot seat, developed the condition called “subdural hematoma” after a horseback-riding accident. But anticoagulation is never given to persons with clots around the brain. They are either watched without intervention or surgically evacuated. So this possible explanation is out.

We are left with a story that is not easy to connect up with sparse information from the inside crowd, who could easily deflate speculation with two or three more measly facts. The National Enquirer has already declared Clinton to be suffering from a brain tumor, linking her observed weight gain, possibly from treatment for the putative cancer, and not-exactly-explained need to leave Obama’s cabinet to the grim diagnosis. Such a story no longer seems to me as implausible as it did after the faint and concussion reports.

So the publication that was once Newsweek now reads tea leaves from … the National Enquirer?  Strange days, indeed.

This shows why the idea that Hillary would create a medical diversion to keep from testifying doesn’t make a lot of sense.  The diversion would be necessarily vague, which would lead to speculation like this — and the very last impression a future presidential candidate needs is that he or she is a couple steps away from death’s door.

For that reason, this seems on the level to me.  Hopefully, Hillary Clinton recovers quickly from whatever ails her, and returns to Washington to inform Congress of the “systemic failures, and leadership and management deficiencies” that her stewardship at State created and led to the Benghazi debacle.

Too much crying wolf here with Hillary. Always another excuse not to testify. I’m through with cutting her any slack.

Hang in there, Hillary! Blood clots are scary, because your imagination can run wild with where it is and what it might do. I will be praying for her and hoping she makes a full recovery.

JimLennon on December 31, 2012 at 12:36 PM

This may have all stemmed from a misquote.

Reliable sources tell me that Mrs. Clinton was calling her husband a “bloody clod” and was misunderstood.

I too wonder if she has cancer/terminal illness. She has fallen off the radar rather quickly, and nobody is talking.

portlandon on December 31, 2012 at 12:37 PM

This type of bloodclot can be cured only with a Presidential pardon and an ironclad agreement with all news agencies to never bring up the topic of Benghazi.

Its very rare.

BobMbx on December 31, 2012 at 12:37 PM

and the very last impression a future presidential candidate needs is that he or she is a couple steps away from death’s door.

Let alone throwing clots…which could lead to serious brain injury.

Tim_CA on December 31, 2012 at 12:38 PM

Any doubt as to the veracity of her being sick and fainting in the first, place weeks ago, is because the Clintons lie like rugs. It is only natural to take anything anyone of them says with a grain or two of salt. That being said, I hope she recovers quickly and retires from any public service. No run for the presidency, no Supreme Court appointment, no UN/World Bank/etc. job. Go home and stay home and wait for grandchildren to meddle play with.

Qzsusy on December 31, 2012 at 12:39 PM

The National Enquirer does more hard investigation than Newsweek, doesn’t it? Just because they sensationalize things, just like all of the cable tv networks, doesn’t mean they don’t check their facts. Do they report on space aliens too? I’m not sure. Still more reliable than Newsweek.

Regardless, I don’t wish ill-health on anyone, but given past behavior, I think everyone has a right to be skeptical of any convenient excuses. It’s looking more like she does have health issues, but I’m still not 100% convinced.

Fenris on December 31, 2012 at 12:40 PM

On the compassionate side of things I do pray Mrs. Clinton has a full recovery. On the political side of things I’m just flabbergasted at the lack of curiosity from our fourth estate. I know I should be used to it by now but it still shocks me.

Considering the non-investion policy of the MSM during the Clintons’ time in Arkansa, and their Presidency, I’m not surprised at the vagueness of the reports on Mrs. Clinton during Benghazigate.

If she is truly ill, I wish her a speedy recovery.

If she is not…par for the course.

I’ve tried, I just can’t muster up any concern over Hillary…none of her “medical” experiences of late seem the least bit credible….This woman has access 24-7 to the best Doctors on the planet…my guess is she is just fine…

I hate to seem cynical, but she (and her husband) have made me that way when it comes to anything they say or do, ya know?

Tim Zank on December 31, 2012 at 12:45 PM

As a medical professional when I first saw “blood clot” after a fall and “concussion” I thought subdural hematoma (venous bleeding in the inside of the skull)

How everone assumes this is in her leg… I don’t know…

The three factors for DVT (leg clot) are:

stasis (bedrest from injury, long plane trips, long car trips

injury to veins (surgery, trauma)

revved up clotting (dehydration making blood like syrup, excess estrogen of pregnancy, healing wounds elesewhere)

Green_Bay_Packers on December 31, 2012 at 12:48 PM

I consider Hillary’s medical problems, which I hope are manageable, and her Benghazi testimony, as completely separate. The medical doctors will do their best. I’m sorry to say Hillary won’t.

Under any circumstances one does not give thinners to someone who recently had a concussion. Unless you want to kill them painfully. Which leads to the obvious conclusion that this story was not released by a doctor. Or there is a far more complicated medical process in play. One requiring multiple medications and simultaneous procedures.

Seems like the Benghazi story will never come out.

The buck stops with a blood clot.

As soon as Hillary says, “I don’t recall,” she will be given a medical pass. Benghazi will stall because no one will have the stones to subpoena 0bama.

When she runs for president in ’16, all will be forgotten/forgiven, because at some point it will “leak” that she was injured on a secret peace mission in service of her country, and she will be touted as so brave.

Sorry, but this is very foolish, even gullible. Hillary is a well-document and extensive liar, and the last thing a known liar wants is to be cross-examined in a legal setting by people who can ask very embarrassing questions. If Hillary has any ambition at all to run for President, then she will want to manage her image very, very carefully.

Of course, it’s always possible that this is on the level. But that’s not the way to bet.

For that reason, this seems on the level to me. Hopefully, Hillary Clinton recovers quickly from whatever ails her, and returns to Washington to inform Congress of the “systemic failures, and leadership and management deficiencies” that her stewardship at State created and led to the Benghazi debacle.

I assume this is sarcasm. Whether or not these medical problems are on the level, Hillary has no intention of returning to testify if she can avoid it. The only way she ever returns to testify is if she’s faking the illness, and she runs out of plausible deniability.

Yes, I have a low opinion of the integrity of Hillary Clinton. But only because she’s earned it.

Sorry she had to interrupt her year-end Caribbean vacay for this medical emergency.

I do hope she recovers.

And I’m glad the press has FINALLY FOUND HER… she had been missing for so long I thought it was time to sponsor a milk carton campaign.

Now lets see if they can actually keep track of her.

I am not holding my breath.

ajacksonian on December 31, 2012 at 1:49 PM

Pure speculation on my part, but one potentially unifying diagnosis could possibly be that she has atrial fibrillation/sick sinus syndrome, which in some folks can be associated with pauses ( a few seconds with no heartbeats because the impulses from the atria {upper chambers of the heart} are not conducted to the ventricles {pumping chambers}), and the patient is at risk to suddenly faint, which could cause a concussion. Since the atria do not “beat” in this disorder, there is always a possibility that a clot can form within the heart, which would place the patient at risk for a stroke which could occur if a piece of the clot should break loose (embolize) and travel to the brain. This is usually treated with blood thinners (such as Coumadin,Pradaxa,or Xarelto) to try to minimize the potential for a clot to form, but is not used after an embolic stroke, since this would increase the risk for intracranial bleeding.

The saga of the Rose Law Firm billing records is as damning as Bubba lying to the grand jury.

At least his was about sex.

Hers was about financial fraud.

Hillary Clinton is a thoroughly corrupt, venal woman, and morally unfit to be president.

cane_loader on December 31, 2012 at 1:52 PM

If she’s really sick and rules out 2016, then Hillary may be willing to sell out O on Benghazi?

sauldalinsky on December 31, 2012 at 1:46 PM

I don’t see her as a person with the character and strength it would take to do that. She’s had ample opportunity to defend her actions and explain the chain of events that led to the tragedy. She doesn’t want to reveal her part or the presidents.

We alresdy have Benghazi-type deception, just with the announced vacation to the Dominican Republic.

The DominicanToday website received a scathing, vituperative response from the State Dept:

Posted by Jim Hoft on Saturday, December 29, 2012, 12:57 PM

(Updated Below)
She’s having a rough time.

Hillary Clinton was too sick to speak with Congress this month about the Benghazi massacre. But, her illness didn’t keep her from celebrating New Year’s Eve at the Punta Cana resort in the Dominican Republic.
Dominican Today reported:

Ex-president Bill Clinton and his wife Hillary Clinton are enjoying their year-end vacation in Punta Cana, in the eastern coast of the Dominican Republic.

According to press reports, the Clintons will celebrate New Year’s at the Puntacana Resort & Club and could also attend a fashion show scheduled for December 29, which will be held in honor of famous Dominican designer Oscar de la Renta.

Also expected to attend are American journalist Barbara Walters, Vogue editor Anna Wintour, Spanish actress Mar Flores and her husband Javier Merino, among other international jetsetters.

UPDATE: The State Department wrote to say the story at Dominican Today is not true.

Here are the facts: The Clintons are not in the Dominican Republic. The Clintons are not going to the Dominican Republic. I realize that you are linking to and possibly relying on a DomincanToday.com posting, and rest assured we have contacted them as well to point out their deceitful reporting. I’m hoping that you have now been apprised of the facts, and that what you are presenting to your readers is entirely inaccurate and based on nothing even remotely true, we sincerely hope you will do the right thing and take all necessary steps to correct this falsehood. We likely disagree on just about everything, but surely we can agree that posting a lie is far different than posting an opinion.

If she is truly ill, I wish her a speedy recovery.

If she is not…par for the course.

kingsjester on December 31, 2012 at 12:43 PM

But you’ve already proclaimed her a liar:

Madame Secretary is not the first person to pretend to be sick, in order to get out of taking a test which they knew they would fail.

A true Christian would retract that statement and apologize. What Will Kj Do?

chumpThreads on December 31, 2012 at 1:14 PM

A true Christian hardly feels the need to apologize for commenting that the sky is blue today.

Calling Hillary a liar is a description, not an insult.

tom on December 31, 2012 at 1:57 PM

The National Enquirer has already declared Clinton to be suffering from a brain tumor, linking her observed weight gain, possibly from treatment for the putative cancer, and not-exactly-explained need to leave Obama’s cabinet to the grim diagnosis.

Weight gain from cancer treatment? No. Survey says little piggy needs to push off from the trough a little earlier. And, little piggy needs a hair dresser.
And, those trolls who are getting their panties twisted about attacking her fat lady are probably not too far off from the idiots who cry and leave flowers at an altar when a celebrity overdoses or drowns In a tub. Shut up.

RovesChins on December 31, 2012 at 1:58 PM

Why is the State Department responding to a simple publishing of the whereabouts of the Secretary of State with words like:

“deceitful”
“nothing even remotely true”
“falsehood”
“lie”

??????

I am smelling smoke, folks.

A simple reporting of a Dominican Republic vacation does NOT warrant such language from our State Department.

cane_loader on December 31, 2012 at 1:59 PM

Why would http://www.dominicantoday.com , out of the blue, start telling deceitful lies about the location of the Secretary of State?

Do they have an agenda?

Was it to draw more people to the fashion show that Barbara Walters was supposed to attend?

Will someone please call Barbar Walters and ask her whether she heard Hillary Clinton was supposed to attend?

This is called investigative journalism, folks

cane_loader on December 31, 2012 at 2:02 PM

…this seems on the level to me.

Ridiculous. If her stupid stomach flu/dehydration/black-out/concussion/blood clot were real, we wouldn’t be told anything about it. Hillary Clinton nor obama, nor anyone in the current administration, has told the truth, or been forthcoming, even once, about anything, over the last four years – WHY on Earth would anyone with a brain believe anything they say now? The only reason that we have been fed this absolutely absurd story is that the Hillary and the administration know that she must not testify about Benghazi – PERIOD.

http://www.dominicantoday.com/dr/people/2012/12/29/46224/US-State-Dept-denies-Clintons-visit-to-Punta-Cana-Update

UPDATE

Mr. Philippe Reines, Deputy Assistant Secretary, U.S. Department of State, Washington, DC, in a note to DT denies the reports regarding the Clintons’ visit, as stated in the report:

Punta Cana, DR.– Ex-president Bill Clinton and his wife Hillary Clinton are enjoying their year-end vacation in Punta Cana, in the eastern coast of the Dominican Republic.

According to press reports, the Clintons will celebrate New Year’s at the Puntacana Resort & Club and could also attend a fashion show scheduled for December 29, which will be held in honor of famous Dominican designer Oscar de la Renta.

If Hillary sincerely had a clot and had to go to the hospital, and had to cancel her visit,

WHY does the U.S. state dept. use accusatory language on the Dominican Today, posted above in my comment, to correct a “mistake?”

WHY THE ACCUSATIONS OF “DECEITFUL,” “FALSEHOOD,” and “LIES?”

cane_loader on December 31, 2012 at 2:07 PM

So ho is running the State Department now?

What is his or her name?

Someone has to be in charge.

Al Haig?
