Video: The hottest movie gun violence from celebrities against gun violence

posted at 7:01 pm on December 31, 2012 by Allahpundit

Via Red State, the sequel to this should be “Highest personal carbon footprints by celebrities against global warming.” The defense here will be that it’s all just make believe and has no influence on the culture generally or on degenerate lunatics like Adam Lanza specifically. That’s fine by me, but it sure is funny how eager Hollywood is in other circumstances to boast about how much influence over the culture it has. Oddly enough, it’s only the good outcomes that are attributable to them, not the bad.

Michael Moore once made a movie puzzling over the fact that while other countries have plenty of guns too, none of them has as much gun violence as America. Well, none of them has a glamour industry as sophisticated as America’s either, and there’s nothing that that industry likes to glamorize more than violence, especially violence involving guns. Even the people who start out opposed to it seem to get sucked in. I remember a college prof marveling at how real and sordid the killings looked in “Taxi Driver” vis-a-vis how stylish and cartoonish they seemed just 15 years later in “GoodFellas.” Note to Hollywood: If you’re scoring images of guys hung on meat hooks to the piano part of “Layla,” you should probably hold off on lectures.

These people are going to be awfully disappointed when their hero gives up on the cause early next year. He’s already preparing the ground to blame everyone except himself.

How about guns don’t kill people and movies don’t kill people, people kill people? Sometimes it’s for passion, sometimes its for money, sometimes its just nutjob deranged people. I don’t see how blaming anyone or anything other then the person pulling the trigger is productive.

I get it, we’re giving hollywood a taste of their own medicine. It’s still a dumb argument.

The Notorious G.O.P on December 31, 2012 at 7:20 PM

Okay, break it down for me. Hollywood is full of hypocrites who say on one hand that our gun culture creates violence while on the other hand being involved in very violent movies?

Our argument has always been, “blame the nutjobs, not the guns. Guns don’t kill people, people do.” Is our argument now “guns don’t kill people, movies do!”?

Or, are we all just chuckling at a juvenile compilation that doesn’t help us make our case, and kind of hurts us because we’re (even jokingly) accepting the premise that something other than the trigger puller is responsible for mass murders?

Timin203 on December 31, 2012 at 7:32 PM

So, have any of those Hwd pussies responded to the video?

Blake on December 31, 2012 at 7:18 PM

I vote for another Sean Penn op ed, an elaboration on his earlier point:

“This can, and is, being very easily exampled with newly invigorated discussions with attention on the recognition and treatment of mental health, and certainly that is a priority. And to be responsible to that priority, we too have to recognize its applicability to the mental health of our American community at large.”

Timin203 on December 31, 2012 at 7:32 PM

No, I think what we’re shooting for is to compel them to close their pie holes on the subject while they’re still creating a gun and gun violence culture with their imagery. The vast preponderance of gun owners are more respectful of the gun and take the ownership of them more seriously than any flake from Tinsel Town.

It’s not trying to emulate them any further than fighting fire with fire.

It’s the hypocrisy.

And consider the state of mind of these character portrayals in these movies. I mean, where is there a sober, necessary, reluctant use of a firearm? Instead you have anger, often extreme anger, or as some kind of emotional outlet, or spite, or stupidity, or with some kind of enjoyment in killing or maiming another person. It would be like portrayals with a chain saw where it’s never used to actually cut down or prune a tree in a responsible way, but instead something out of “Scarface” or “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre” where you use it to saw off body parts.

Question for Timin203: If these celebrities don’t think they have any influence over people’s behavior, why did they make that PSA?

Jim Treacher on December 31, 2012 at 7:52 PM

The one thing to add is at the end their should be a body count. Something like, “During this 3 minute video there was this many simulated murders and attempted murders and a this many current gun laws where violated. It would be in the hundreds of current laws that where broken in that 3 minutes edit and send people away to jail for a over a century combined. But that is make believe and has no effect on real life or something.

The NRA was brilliant at that press conference throwing this back in Hollywood’s face.

I’m against government censorship of media for adults, but no one can argue that the filth that comes out of the media has more to do with the sorry state our culture than any other factor. Our gun laws were FAR looser decades ago yet we never had these shooting rampages.

I’m not calling for government action on this, just a good old fashioned shaming and calling them out. Yes, they do have blood on their hands.

Not a bad question. They clearly do believe that they have influence over their fans’ beliefs. Behavior? Look, normal people don’t see a violent movie, then go out and start shooting people. Just like normal people don’t see a gun and turn into a homicidal maniac. Yes, hollywood is hypocritical. But these people in these PSAs are — for the most part — some of the most out of touch, stupid people in our society. Who cares what they say? We’re just encouraging them.

Jim Treacher on December 31, 2012 at 8:04 PM

Celebrities lecturing the rest of us on how to do anything other than act is a joke. Half of them can’t even do that.

Celebrities are about the most useless people in society. Is there anyone less important than a celebrity? Especially actors. What do they do other than pretend. Even musician celebrities actually do something real. They sing or play instruments. Actors just pretend.

A toilet scrubber benefits society more than a celebrity. And there they sit surrounded by their armed security details, high walls and locked gates lecturing us on guns.

JellyToast on December 31, 2012 at 8:05 PM

Sorry, were you calling me a progressivetard? my only argument is that guns don’t kill people, video games don’t kill people, movies don’t kill people, people kill people.

To put another way, 99.99999% of people that own guns, watch violent movies, and play videos never kill anyone.

Beyond that, I don’t see the validity of the movie’s argument other then to point out the painfully obvious — that hollywood is very selective and hypocritical when it comes to the causes the brain dead celebrities embrace.

Making a PSA is like “carbon credits.” Spout the proper liberal bromides, and then you can do whatever you want.

Jim Treacher on December 31, 2012 at 8:01 PM

Yup. They’re doing their best to follow in the footsteps of their heroes like Algore, John Edwards, and Dear Leader.

Yes, there are two Americas. Yes, please tax me more. (Never mind that little bank account offshore and that foreign business venture). Yes, carbon dioxide means the end of all life as we know it, unless it’s coming out the back end of my private party palace in the sky.

The fun part is that most don’t even realize their own hypocrisy. They actually talk themselves into believing their own bombastic bilge, and feel superior doing it.

Classic. Mocking these know-nothing, hypocrite douchebags is just good fun.

Tim, I’m sorry. I love your comments here but you were commenting on an earlier thread this week or last to do about what this video does. I’m not really understanding your argument tonight.

hawkdriver on December 31, 2012 at 8:03 PM

I guess it just comes down to the fact that I’m getting frustrated that not only are we not winning arguments, we’re not even making them. Like, instead of making silly videos showing how some idiots in hollywood are hypocritical idiots (it’s like making fun of retarded kids, not really that funny), maybe we (and our so-called representatives) should be having real arguments on real issues.

As of right now, taxes will go up on most / all high earners, spending will be increased not cut, and “military looking weapons” or whateverthehell they’re saying now will be banned. These are big arguments that we have not even put up a serious fight about.

And yes, I think an assault weapons ban in some form will pass. Judging by the backbone republicans have had so far, I think they will back down if Obama really pushes for one.

Maybe I’m just unhappy about how differently 2012 is ending then I’d hoped :).

You are wrong. Sadly, these celebrities have a lot of influence. The best course is to mock them and reveal them for the idiot hypocrites they are. You can choose to ignore them and allow their idiocy to go unchallenged, or you can throw the same tactics they use right back at them. Principled, honest and fair arguments are well and good and have their place, but memorable viral videos like this one will reach a lot more people and will have a greater impact.

The “demand that celebrities go f*** themselves” is a perfect response to the silly “demand a plan” line. Sometimes you just have to sink to their level.

It’s always the same snot nosed holier than thou types that show up in these things. Of course Jon Hamm would make an appearance since he thinks the tea party is a racist organization. I’ve never had any use for that expletive little pr*ck.

TxAnn56 on December 31, 2012 at 8:13 PM

Sorry, were you calling me a progressivetard? my only argument is that guns don’t kill people, video games don’t kill people, movies don’t kill people, people kill people.

To put another way, 99.99999% of people that own guns, watch violent movies, and play videos never kill anyone.

Beyond that, I don’t see the validity of the movie’s argument other then to point out the painfully obvious — that hollywood is very selective and hypocritical when it comes to the causes the brain dead celebrities embrace.

Timin203 on December 31, 2012 at 8:05 PM

I guess you don’t actually understand how indoctrination or mind control works. I could explain this to you but it would really take a long time.

I’ll try to do it in bullet points instead.

Any time the human mind encounters a totally foreign and brand new idea it rejects it outright.

Before any new concept can be accepted you have to be exposed to it.

Exposure always meets resistance in the beginning.

Repeated exposure erodes resistance.

What was utterly unacceptable become merely revolting, the merely revolting becomes disgusting, the disgusting becomes nasty, the nasty becomes annoying and the annoying become tolerable.

The process is called desensitization. Once you have become desensitized to something, it become acceptable.

I guess. I can still complain about how juvenile it all is though :-D. But I guess that’s the world we live in… our countries government and our future are determined by low information honey boo boo and teen mom 2 watching idiots.

And making fun of liberals is obviously more fun than making fun of retarted kids….and it’s like 500 times easier (and you won’t end up in the vice pricipals office).

Tim_CA on December 31, 2012 at 8:16 PM

75% tax on actors salaries who participate in irresponsible violent movies.

GIVE THE MONEY TO THE CHILDREN

Make it retroactive. So they have to cough up the tax money they owe us for movies they made in the past.
