Poll: OOTY Semifinals #2

posted at 9:31 am on December 30, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

We have two more slots open for tomorrow’s OOTY finals — and the poll from yesterday is still open for those first two slots, too!  Which of today’s selections will compete for the title of Obamateurism of the Year? Don’t think you can skip out on making a choice, because abstentions aren’t exactly optimal.  You can actually divide your loyalties, since what happens with the top two choices won’t stay in Vegas but move on to the final.  And when you see the finalists, you want to tell yourself that you really did build that … no?

Previous Obamateurisms of the Year:

  • Giving 2 minutes of “shout-outs” before getting to the Fort Hood shooting (2009)
  • Obama leaves Clinton at press conference podium on tax deal to attend Christmas party (2010)
  • “I would put our legislative and foreign policy accomplishments in our first two years against any president— with the possible exceptions of Johnson, F.D.R., and Lincoln.” (2011)

For more on the history and end of the OOTDs, here’s my post from November 9th.

I think “you didn’t build that” will define Obama’s presidency like “tear down that wall” for reagan or that nonsense about asking what you can do for government from JFK, or even “I did not have sex with that woman”

#1, really highlights Obama’s ignorance and stupidity.

philly_PA on December 30, 2012 at 9:46 AM

I easily picked #1 as the winner. It is so insulting as to be stunning.

I had to vote for #3 as this is AMATEUR. Only someone with no interest in the job and is wrapped up totally in his self could act this way.

I still can’t believe this low rent grifter is in D.C. in any capacity.

upinak on December 30, 2012 at 9:57 AM

#1 is in the same category as his “when you spread the wealth around, it’s good for everybody” to Joe The Plumber, and “If I were designing a system from scratch, I would probably go ahead with a single-payer system.”

The literary types call it “foreshadowing.” They are among the clearest statements of his Marxist beliefs.

Drained Brain on December 30, 2012 at 10:06 AM

Some rationalizations are more egregiously tone deaf than others.

I was torn between the ‘divide the country’ and ‘Las Ghazi fundraiser.’ True, the out-of-context ‘You didn’t build that’ fuster cluck received far more press – and as CorporatePiggy (on December 30, 2012 at 9:33 AM) deftly noted, “In context it is actually worse than those 4 words.” How true.

The final 2012 electoral vote proved the country is willing, even eager, to wrap itself the euro-socialist modus vivendi. That bitter disappointment is most disturbing, yet I found Obama’s callous embrace of riotous murder occurring before his situation rooms eyes, then robotically march to Sin City to sate his mother’s milk of politics addiction, to reveal him as a truly evil man out to divide and conquer.

Goes to Las Vegas fundraiser after attack on Benghazi consulate
“If four Americans get killed, it’s not optimal.”
Skipped daily security briefing before and after Benghazi attack

Reflect his Marxist ideologies perhaps the most when read in the context of one of Joesph Stalin’s most famous statements.

“One death is a tragedy, the deaths of 50 million are a mere statistic – Joesph Stalin.”

Hitler, Stalin, Mao and Pol Pot all shared a common disregard for human life with Barack Obama. That common disregard has it’s ultimate and inescapable foundation in their shared and most basic and fundamental ideology, that “The End Justifies the Means”.

“If you’ve got a business, you didn’t build that. Somebody else made that happen.”

Jazz Shaw got his 15 minutes for a lazy and dishonest blog post and ends up with:

“Out of Context Quote of the Year”.

The Republicans tried desperately to make this one stick. Who cares if using a partial quote to distort the President’s meaning was completely dishonest? The mission was to make Obama a one term president, by hook or by crook.

And at the end of the day, President Obama is STILL President of the United States of America. The community organizer BUILT a re-election campaign that turned out the vote despite Republican attempts at voter suppression.

The “You didn’t build that” distortion will stand as one of the great lies of the sad, pathetic candidate of a sad, pathetic and intellectually bankrupt Republican party.

But it’s not just “one of the great lies”. The same resources are out there and available to all: roads, regulations designed to even the playing field, protection of the country. But if one person, say Steve Jobs, was able to use available resources, while another did not, and build one of the largest companies on earth, then he did, indeed, build that.

Kevin K. on December 30, 2012 at 11:36 AM

This was an easy one, the last one….because a sitting President….our CIC……not attending briefings either before OR after an attack on our sovereignty, where our own troops/civilians were killed…..is grounds for impeachment.

tencole on December 30, 2012 at 11:40 AM

chumpThreads on December 30, 2012 at 11:16 AM

“Out of context” is the best you can do? Cognitive dissonance is tough, eh? In context, it’s even worse.

The tax dollars that paid for those roads, bridges, schools, and teachers didn’t just come from “someone else” or the “rest of us.” They came from the innovators, the factory owners, and the entrepreneurs too. In 2009, the top 400 taxpayers paid almost as much in federal income taxes as the entire bottom 50 percent combined. ~ James Antle

Even squishes saw through this ruse:

President Obama should acknowledge that he misspoke in his infamous rant insisting that “if you’ve got a business, you didn’t build that.” Instead, he’s running ads claiming he was quoted out of context. The actual context only makes it worse, since he’s explaining his bid to raise taxes on success by insisting prosperous people have no real right to profits from their businesses. That’s why he said there are “a lot of smart people out there” and “there are a whole bunch of hardworking people out there” – suggesting personal achievement is based on dumb luck, or selective favor of government. In the same speech, he declared Clinton era government “created…a lot of millionaires” – implying those millionaires didn’t make their own money and have no real right to it. The president should disown, not defend, his own clumsy but revealing statements. ~ Michael Medved

Fallon on December 30, 2012 at 11:41 AM

My vote, by the way, went to the deaths of American’s not being “optimal”. “You didn’t build that” shows his political philosophy. But the effective dismissal of deaths of an ambassador of the United Sates and others is disgusting, as are his non-reactions at the time of the attack and afterwards.

For the weekly polls I tried to focus on the just not getting it choices. But now that we’re at the final ones of the year, I am focusing on the really disgraceful acts of omission or commission of this self-proclaimed messiah.

chumpThreads on December 30, 2012 at 11:23 AM

Only a complete imbecile calls Godwin when it is abundantly clear that they are utterly ignorant of Godwin’s Law.

Godwin’s law applies especially to inappropriate, inordinate, or hyperbolic comparisons of other situations (or one’s opponent) with Nazis. The law and its corollaries would not apply to discussions covering known mainstays of Nazi Germany such as genocide, eugenics or racial superiority, nor, more debatably, to a discussion of other totalitarian regimes or ideologies, if that was the explicit topic of conversation, since a Nazi comparison in those circumstances may be appropriate, in effect committing the fallacist’s fallacy. Whether it applies to humorous use or references to oneself is open to interpretation, since this would not be a fallacious attack against a debate opponent.

While falling foul of Godwin’s law tends to cause the individual making the comparison to lose their argument or credibility, Godwin’s law itself can be abused as a distraction, diversion or even as censorship, fallaciously miscasting an opponent’s argument as hyperbole when the comparisons made by the argument are actually appropriate.[10] Similar criticisms of the “law” (or “at least the distorted version which purports to prohibit all comparisons to German crimes”) have been made by Glenn Greenwald.[11]

You assume that everyone here, (or myself specifically) are as intellectually deficient as yourself, you assume incorrectly thus exposing yourself as an imbecile.

Nope. Liberals/Progressives embrace the Story of the Crab Bucket.

One time a man was walking along the beach and say another man fishing in the surf with a bait bucket beside him. As he drew closer, he saw that the bait bucket had no lid and had live crabs inside.

“Why don’t you cover your bait bucket so the crabs won’t escape?”, he said.

“You don’t understand.”, the man replied, “If there is one crab in the bucket it would surely crawl out very quickly. However, when there are many crabs in the bucket, if one tries to crawl up the side, the others grab hold of it and pull it back down so that it will share the same fate as the rest of them.”

Re: Godwin’s Law

Godwin’s law (also known as Godwin’s Rule of Nazi Analogies or Godwin’s Law of Nazi Analogies[1][2]) is an argument made by Mike Godwin in 1990[2] that has become an Internet adage. It states: “As an online discussion grows longer, the probability of a comparison involving Nazis or Hitler approaches 1.”[2][3] In other words, Godwin observed that, given enough time, in any online discussion—regardless of topic or scope—someone inevitably makes a comparison to Hitler or the Nazis.

My point is correct. Resorting to Godwin is a way of life on HotAir.

Regarding your citation, President Obama, operating within the bounds of the U.S. Constitution is in no way comparable to the list of people mentioned. Making false comparisons to Hitler, etc, is just a way for haters to slag a president they hate. It’s wrong when leftists do it and it’s wrong when rightists do it.

Rightists don’t like the guy; understood. But when you go to Hitler and Mao you just show yourselves to be intellectually useless.

Like I said, you are a ignorant imbecile. Context is everything moron.

The law and its corollaries would not apply to discussions covering known mainstays of Nazi Germany such as genocide, eugenics or racial superiority, nor, more debatably, to a discussion of other totalitarian regimes or ideologies,

Godwin’s law DOES NOT apply to Stalin, Mao or Pol Pot, nor does it apply to lists of genocidal tyrannical Socialist, Communist or Marxist dictators which just happen to include Hitler, since he was a genocidal tyrannical Socialist Dictator. Moreover, since the corollary was the ideology shared by all of the above mentioned, including Barack Obama, your citation of Godwin’s law clearly and indisputably falls under the “Godwin’s law itself can be abused as a distraction, diversion or even as censorship, fallaciously miscasting an opponent’s argument as hyperbole when the comparisons made by the argument are actually appropriate” exclusionary clause.

“When you read the report, and it confirms what we had already seen based on some of our internal reviews, there was just some sloppiness, not intentional, in terms of how we secure embassies in areas where you essentially don’t have governments that have a lot of capacity to protect those embassies,” said Obama this morning on NBC. “So we’re doing a thorough renew. not only will we implement all the recommendations that were made, but we’ll try to do more than that. You know, with respect to who carried it out, that’s an ongoing investigation. The FBI has sent individuals to Libya repeatedly. We have some very good leads.”

Just for the record (emphasis mine):

There are a lot of wealthy, successful Americans who agree with me — because they want to give something back. They know they didn’t — look, if you’ve been successful, you didn’t get there on your own. You didn’t get there on your own. I’m always struck by people who think, well, it must be because I was just so smart. There are a lot of smart people out there. It must be because I worked harder than everybody else. Let me tell you something — there are a whole bunch of hardworking people out there.

If you were successful, somebody along the line gave you some help. There was a great teacher somewhere in your life. Somebody helped to create this unbelievable American system that we have that allowed you to thrive. Somebody invested in roads and bridges. If you’ve got a business — you didn’t build that. Somebody else made that happen. The Internet didn’t get invented on its own. Government research created the Internet so that all the companies could make money off the Internet.

To take one sentence from those paragraphs and use it out of the context of the rest of what the President said is dishonest on its face. Period.

But you Obama haters simply can’t give it up. Even though the American people had the good sense to ignore the transparent lie, and the whole meme fell flat. But you guys just love “you didn’t build that”. Well, drink your fill, bitter clingers. Enjoy your lie. I’ll settle for having President Barack Hussein Obama in the White House.

And that, by the way, is why you lost the election. You believed in your own lies and your own poll numbers and in a candidate most of you loathed.

Oh yes, you are losers. The American people told you so on November 6.

Ed, I don’t like the way that:

1. “You didn’t build that”

2. And flying to Vegas while the embassy is unsecured and Stevens’ diary is lying on the ground.

are in the same flight.

Those two are gargantuan.. I really didn’t want to choose between them. They should have been in the finals.

Not tepid little losers who need daddy-government to make every decision for them from cradle to grave – because they don’t possess enough gray-matter to make their own way (and beleive those who do cheated somehow and should spread their wealth).

Somebody tell me that this doesn’t look like a communist poster. Obama wants to identify with the socialist/communist movement. Else he wouldn’t have picked “Forward” as his slogan. He just wants a little plausible deniability.

Why is the “Rosa Parks bus” in Dearborn, Michigan?

Also, I noticed my favorite Obama photo was not included.

listens2glenn on December 30, 2012 at 11:57 AM

I believe that picture where he shows his knuckles to that Mongolian diplomat is from late 2011.
Ed had that up for a OOTY last year (2011) but he linked a different picture on the OOTY poll that the one you are referring to, which was an OOTW.

The fix was in!

Really? Because you don’t seem very happy. You seem like an angry, sullen doucher.

It’s hilarious to watch you complain about “context” (the quote is still terrible in context, by the way; everyonehas access to those roads, those highways and the same internet. That doesn’t explain why some people fail, and why some people succeed. It was yet another screed by President Mom-Jeans to minimize hard work.) when the “winning” campaign convinced millions of Americans that Mitt Romney actually gave a woman cancer, “loves to fire people,” and “doesn’t care about the very poor.”
