Guess who’s getting a pay raise?

posted at 2:31 pm on December 29, 2012 by Jazz Shaw

Some days, it seems like there’s just no limit to what you can do with an executive order. The most recent addition to the list of many hundreds of EOs signed by Barack Obama lifts a freeze on the pay rates for certain DC denizens. The largest beneficiary of this largess (skimpy though it may be) is a name which may come as a surprise.

President Barack Obama issued an executive order to end the pay freeze on federal employees, in effect giving some federal workers a raise. One federal worker now to receive a pay increase is Vice President Joe Biden.

According to disclosure forms, Biden made a cool $225,521 last year. After the pay increase, he’ll now make $231,900 per year.

Also on the list for a bump next are all of the Senators, House members, John Boehner, majority and minority leaders in both chambers and all the members of the Supreme Court. (Among others.) But as pay raises go, it’s not particularly generous. We’re talking about one half of one percent across the board. The total price tag for the raises works out to $500M in 2013 and $11B spread out over ten years. But the optics on this are still terrible. We just finished up an endless campaign where both candidates constantly reminded us of not only the unacceptable unemployment rates, but of the stagnant wages of a shrinking middle class. Lots of people are once again getting no pay raise at all this year, with most of them just thanking their lucky stars to have a job. Turning around and giving your second in command a raise on his salary – which is already roughly five times the median income in the nation – is going to ring sour in many ears.

And doing it by Executive Order just pours salt in the wound. Remember this?

As a candidate, Obama railed against former President Bush’s expansion of presidential powers, particularly his push to invade Iraq.

“These last few years we’ve seen an unacceptable abuse of power at home,” then-candidate Obama said in Chicago in October of 2007. “We’ve paid a heavy price for having a president whose priority is expanding his own power.”

Bad optics for someone who is famous for being the premier politician of his generation.

This is a good example of how the far right in our party serve simply to distract us from what is important. With all the real issues that we are having to fight, getting outraged over this is silly horseshit. Where I work we generally give 2-3% annual raises across the board for good performance reviews, so this is hardly dramatic. Don’t let the loony right distract us from the real issues. There are plenty of real problems for us to get outraged over.

These idiots will always vote themselves money first. What’s even more disturbing is the army of public sector workers who are more highly rewarded than their true employers in the private sector.

Then of course there are the academics who are effectively public sector employees who bilk private citizens through ludicrous tuition fees facilitated by public-sector loans.

(Not a dig at LibFree, I’m not counting the community colleges here because they are arguably still good value).

Federal Workers have been under a pay freeze for two years and one half of one percent is not huge. But, I just don’t get the optics of this. Why do this on the 28th of December when it doesn’t even kick in until the first pay period after March 27th?

lostmotherland on December 29, 2012 at 3:17 PM

Yes! Let’s borrow from China so that Federal workers can earn even more! Yippee!

Since Obama took office, he has hired 101 Federal workers EVERY BLOODY DAY and now they get a raise. Meanwhile, middle class families have been clobbered under the Obama wreckovery. Since 2009, the middle 20% of American households have seen their average incomes drop 4%. In 2011 alone, they fell 1.7%. The poorest 20% have fared even worse under Obama. Don’t take my word for it either. Obama’s recovery has been of the top 10%, for the top 10%, and by the top 1%, according to no less than the Progressive Pygmy, Robert Reeeeeiicccch.

Whose Recovery?

The top 1 percent got 45 percent of Clinton-era economic growth, and 65 percent of the economic growth during the Bush era.

According to an analysis of tax returns by Emmanuel Saez and Thomas Piketty, the top 1 percent pocketed 93 percent of the gains in 2010. 37 percent of the gains went to the top one-tenth of one percent. No one below the richest 10 percent saw any gain at all.

In fact, most of the bottom 90 percent have lost ground. Their average adjusted gross income was $29,840 in 2010. That’s down $127 from 2009, and down $4,843 from 2000 (all adjusted for inflation).

Now, when you are finished beating that dead, populist horse, please ring up President Obama and tell him to take care of this BECAUSE IT IS JUST NOT “FAIR”!!!

A new report just out from the Internal Revenue Service reveals that 36 of President Obama’s executive office staff owe the country $833,970 in back taxes.

These people working for Mr. Fair Share apparently haven’t paid any share, let alone their fair share.

Previous reports have shown how well-paid Obama’s White House staff is, with 457 aides pulling down more than $37 million last year. That’s up seven workers and nearly $4 million from the Bush administration’s last year.

Nearly one-third of Obama’s aides make more than $100,000 with 21 being paid the top White House salary of $172,200, each.

The IRS’ 2010 delinquent tax revelations come as part of a required annual agency report on federal employees’ tax compliance. Turns out, an awful lot of folks being paid by taxpayers are not paying their own income taxes.

The report finds that thousands of federal employees owe the country more than $3.4 billion in back taxes. That’s up 3% in the past year.

BIG KISS.

A timely description of the fall of the Roman Empire found in Stephen Greenblatt’s The Swerve:

A clearheaded, thoughtful, and unusually impartial historian, Ammianus seems to have sensed the impending end. His description of a world exhausted by crushing taxes, the financial ruin of large segments of the population, and the dangerous decline in the army’s morale vividly conjured up the conditions that made it possible, some twenty years after his death, for the Goths to sack Rome.

Sound familiar? And just who is orchestrating America’s fall?

This really pisses me off. I’m a medical transcriptionist. That means that when you visit the doctor, they dictate verbal notes about you. They come to me and I type them up. It requires extensive knowledge about anatomy, pharmacology, diseases and treatments, surgical terminology, not to mention grammar. I’m required by the HIPAA act to maintain absolute confidentiality. I consistently maintain a 99% or more accuracy/quality rating in my work.

In the past, when operating my own business, I was able to earn $55,000 in one year. Could have been more if I worked real hard. Life was good then.

Work in this industry is drying up. One of the reasons is that many companies are sending work overseas to India and soon, probably to the Philippines because its cheaper. I’ve had to close my business and now work for one of the big national companies. They’ve taken away paid holidays and right before Christmas this year, I’ve had to take an approximately 30% pay cut. I now will be lucky to earn $28,000 a year for full-time work. Yeah, I’m probably a chump for staying in it but tell me, how do I find another job at this stage of my life? I’m 54 and don’t have a college degree. Everything I know has been achieved through independent learning and life experience, with 24 college credits along the way and that’s only because an old employer paid for it. I’m going broke fast, living on my retirement fund. Job applications these days seem to be only conducted online and they won’t even look at you if you don’t have a Bachelors or similar.

So yeah, this really pisses me off.
