Benghazi penalties “bogus,” officials returning to work?

posted at 10:31 am on December 26, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

Via Drudge, it looks like accountability for the four deaths of Americans in Benghazi turned out to be temporary.  The New York Post has learned that the four State Department officials that supposedly resigned after the Accountability Review Board report slammed Foggy Bottom for its “systemic failures” and “leadership and management deficiencies” will return to work after all — and all but one in the same post:

The four officials supposedly out of jobs because of their blunders in the run-up to the deadly Benghazi terror attack remain on the State Department payroll — and will all be back to work soon, The Post has learned.

The highest-ranking official caught up in the scandal, Assistant Secretary of State Eric Boswell, has not “resigned” from government service, as officials said last week. He is just switching desks. And the other three are simply on administrative leave and are expected back.

The four were made out to be sacrificial lambs in the wake of a scathing report issued last week that found that the US compound in Benghazi, Libya, was left vulnerable to attack because of “grossly inadequate” security.

State Department leaders “didn’t come clean about Benghazi and now they’re not coming clean about these staff changes,” a source close to the situation told The Post., adding, the “public would be outraged over this.”

The Post refers to the Clintonian parsing by State spokesman Victoria Nuland.  Last week, Nuland said that Boswell had immediately resigned as assistant secretary for diplomatic security.  Most assumed that meant Boswell would be out looking for a job, but instead it just meant that Boswell would transfer to another position at State — not much of a punishment for his “deficiencies,” but perhaps a good demonstration of why those deficiencies at State are “systemic.”

The news isn’t getting rave reviews on Capitol Hill, either:

House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairwoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-Fla.) told The Post this is “yet another ruse about the tragedy of Benghazi.”

“State Department officials proclaimed . . . that heads would roll . . . Now we see that the discipline is a lie and all that has happened is the shuffling of the deck chairs.”

That’s what accountability means to the Obama administration, apparently.

Update: Say, where’s Hillary Clinton in all of this, anyway?  Daniel Halper wonders:

In her absence, she’s still been putting out an occasional statement under her own name–but none related to her health. On December 21, she released a written message for Japan National Day and a statement on Kerry’s nomination to replace her. A few days before that, on December 17, she released a statement on the death of Senator Daniel Inouye.

So, what’s Hillary Clinton’s status? Her situation is serious enough to sideline her for two weeks, but we still don’t know what’s going on. How serious is it? Does it prevent her carrying out the secretary of state duties?

Clinton has long-planned to step down as secretary of state “days” after Inauguration Day. The question is, where’s Hillary and will we even see her before she leaves office?

Maybe we won’t see her until she decides to put her track record of “systemic failures” and “leadership and management deficiencies” on the line as an argument to be the next President of the United States.

“the public would be outraged”

!!!!!

(belly laughs) …. (wipes eyes) ….. (shakes head)

The “public” 30 years ago would have been outraged. Hell, even many of the career people with a clue would have been outraged – enough to make a public stink themselves.

Today?

You kidding me?? This “public” (incl. many “conservatives”) is a fickle unworthy disaster that carries on like an idiotic pro athlete celebrating a routine play when things go well, and whining like a retarded infant the nano-second things get marginally difficult. How the US ever prevailed in the Cold War is a deepening mystery, even to one who was in the thick of it.

How anyone could inconvenience themselves, much less put themselves at risk and endure hardships, to serve this “public” is beyond me. In, or out, of uniform. I’ll be checking in with some other veterans of the war posts this week to see if their disgust/disbelief levels have gone off the charts like mine quite a while ago. It’s almost reached the level of embarrassment for having been a chump to have “served”. (on the dark humor positive side of the ledger, even back in 2004 folks being sworn in for war zone duty laughed spontaneously when the words “uphold and defend the constitution” were stated by the State drone administering the oath)

I am struggling with whether to go down to the local office and apply for food stamps. I checked on it and I can get a couple hundred dollars a month. I could stretch that a long way at Dollar General. I would be a financial fool not to do it… but it feels very wrong.

cane_loader on December 26, 2012 at 11:31 AM

As it was originally set up, one could only get American-produced food goods with a food stamp card. That, of course, has gone by the board (if for no other reason than that we have become a food importer rather than a food exporter).
However, I do believe that the food stamp program is a worthwhile one – despite all of the dishonesty and cheating involved in it. It puts food – a lot from American farmers – on American’s tables; and lets them eat healthier than they might otherwise do.
If you can get a couple of hundred dollars of good food – go for it. At least you won’t be going to Vegas or on a cruise with it. You’ll be one of the people using it as it was meant to be used.

And, there are a LOT of white people with college degrees getting food stamps nowadays…at least if one can believe the reports about all the graduates who can’t find work. It seems as though even the ones who have gone to live with their parents are getting them.

Before you have plastic surgery..you have to dry out..
she is either getting plastic surgery or has had it..
Or maybe she is just lying low until after she leaves office..she just has to hunker down for another month..
Then……….she will have “work” done….watch for it..
I am wondering if Amb. Stevens family will ever speak out about this..I suspect not..I am sure they have been “met with”….!!

Hillary Clinton stood before cameras in the Rose Garden 9/12/12 and lied her ass off about the circumstances. She spun a tale of Muslims offended by some video and an ambassador rescued by other Muslims and rushed to the hospital where he sadly died. There wasn’t a bit of truth in any of it.

She also stood in front of cameras when the bodies of four Americans returned to home soil where she repeated the lies and, more despicably, pledged to the families of the dead that the United States government would conduct a full and open investigation.

Hillary Clinton has not “handled” any aspect of Benghazi. She has evaded testimony up to and including faking illness. It is the time for subpeonas and forced testimony even if Hillary Clinton is on her deathbed.

Oh, and that whole bit about, what’s it called, the House? Seems that they do have, well, tremendous leverage in all of these situations, thanks to the power of the purse, and in fact have often used it in our history to tremendous effect. Even back in the 80s when I witnessed it first-hand from the Senate side.

But now? Under these clueless, miniature things populating the GOP “leadership”? (more belly laughs)

And for those ignorant folks who personalize political matters and cheer/boo particular individuals like a teenager at a sporting event, you are part of the problem, too. The House has had tremendous power – dating back to the lame-duck in 2010, even – and has done nothing with it, thereby sharing responsibility for the galactic mess. And people don’t even seem to realize the dimensions and meaning of this mess.

There is, in fact, without any hyperbole, a lawless, Third World-style system now in operation. It bears no relation to anything in US history.

And as truly pathetic as Boehner and his ilk are (and don’t further beclown yourselves, ignorant outsiders, by pretending otherwise), they are, in fact “representatives” – the fault lies not in our despicable and sub-mediocre “leadership”, but in ourselves (that is, any of your family, friends, neighbors, and co-workers who make up the ignorant, greedy, racist, clueless majority.

Mos corrupt administration in American History..no doubt about it..these people aren’t the one’s who should be punished..it should start and end at the top with Obama and Clinton….and again why isn’t any Republican talking about the illegal gun running operation that was taking place there in that non-consulate?

Maybe we won’t see her until she decides to put her track record of “systemic failures” and “leadership and management deficiencies” on the line as an argument to be the next President of the United States.

Considering the current occupant of the White House, those appear to be excellent credentials for the job.

sadsushi on December 26, 2012 at 2:00 PM

Because the house GOP are led by men with excrement for brains and jello spines. They don’t actually care. They may ACT as if they care, but they don’t really. People who actually give a damn, act like they do. Actions.

We need new and tough leadership.

dogsoldier on December 26, 2012 at 2:08 PM

It’s time for the house to subpeona hillary. Hell they must impeach Holder for F&F, but did they? Nope.

dogsoldier on December 26, 2012 at 2:09 PM

Benghazi is ‘classified’. Period. Due to ‘national security’ issues. And thats it, thats all you’ll hear.

tommy71 on December 26, 2012 at 2:09 PM

Just in …

If anyone needs to be fired, it’s Christopher Stevens, that State Department bureaucratic hack who was the ambassador to Libya.
Ipin all of the blame on Christopher Stevens. He was the person in charge in Libya and his failures stacked up one right after another:
1. He failed to reform Islam into a peaceful religion that seeks to resolve conflict through non-violent means.
2. He failed to convince Secretary of State Clinton that there would be any threats to any embassies on 11 September, 2012.
3.. He failed to convince Secretary of State Clinton that the annivery of a previous significant terrorist event would require additionalsecurity.
4. He failed to convince Secretary of State Clinton that there were people in Libya that did not like the U.S.A. or its policies.
5. He failed to convince me,Barack Obama, that he needed support from military forces in the region, use of which would have serious political consequences.
6. He failed to defend himself sufficiently to survive the attack on his person.
7. He failed to take responsibility for all the screw-ups he committed that led up to his death, making the Stete Department,Secretary of State Clinton, and me, President Barack Obama, look bad as a result.

claudius on December 26, 2012 at 3:59 PM

More than 3 months after the Benghazi attack that killed 4 Americans and still no accountability of any real measure let alone answers.

It’s not like the American electorate held them accountable or demanded answers given the results of the election. No wonder they feel emboldened to drag their feet and cover it up.

Yakko77 on December 26, 2012 at 4:52 PM

We live in a third-world thoroughly corrupted banana republic going bankrupt and heading for a communist-like soft tyranny. Thank you lying, cheating Democrats. Thank you, you f*cking racist voters who helped keep Obama in office.

The Rogue Tomato on December 26, 2012 at 4:55 PM

You’re right. And guess who will likely become the next POTUS. Pathetic.

scalleywag on December 26, 2012 at 12:11 PM

This past election and much that we witness in DC today are quite possibly the result of the leverage made available by all the FBI files that Hilary got right after Bill was elected. We never did learn what happened to those thousands of files that were primarily Clinton and Democrat enemies. Those files can be used for blackmail for many, many years and probably have been. Why else have the Republicans been so silent for so long?

Pardonme on December 26, 2012 at 5:17 PM

Isn’t it likely that the State officials who “resigned” are probably not the ones to blame anyway? Isn’t it just as likely that there are officials higher up than these lackeys, that knew how dangerous Benghazi was and also knew that requests for more security were being denied? Who exactly felt as though justice had been done by a few lower-level resignations anyway?

lynncgb on December 26, 2012 at 6:59 PM

easyt65 on December 27, 2012 at 10:33 AM

We Americans want some heads to “roll” over the mistakes and deaths of 4 Americans. We need to get Panetta and Clinton under oath to tell the truth for once. Were we involved in giving guns and weapons to the rebels, who actually were the ones who killed the Americans? We demand the truth.

Resigning upward.

Like Leading From Behind, it only works if the media lies about it.

All I hear is whining from Graham and McCain and a few others.

What a bunch of wimps!!

Sherman1864 on December 28, 2012 at 6:34 AM

Could be wrong here but that never stopped me before. I think there is a technical problem here with the tendered resignation of the the four State Department officials. There resignations are offered to the Secretary of State who can except or reject the resignations. The problem is it’s the Christmas Season and The Secretary of State is at home recovering from her Immaculate Concussion and not present to take action. There is nothing else that can be done with these four individuals until she returns or is replaced.
