Benghazi penalties “bogus,” officials returning to work?

posted at 10:31 am on December 26, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

Via Drudge, it looks like accountability for the four deaths of Americans in Benghazi turned out to be temporary.  The New York Post has learned that the four State Department officials that supposedly resigned after the Accountability Review Board report slammed Foggy Bottom for its “systemic failures” and “leadership and management deficiencies” will return to work after all — and all but one in the same post:

The four officials supposedly out of jobs because of their blunders in the run-up to the deadly Benghazi terror attack remain on the State Department payroll — and will all be back to work soon, The Post has learned.

The highest-ranking official caught up in the scandal, Assistant Secretary of State Eric Boswell, has not “resigned” from government service, as officials said last week. He is just switching desks. And the other three are simply on administrative leave and are expected back.

The four were made out to be sacrificial lambs in the wake of a scathing report issued last week that found that the US compound in Benghazi, Libya, was left vulnerable to attack because of “grossly inadequate” security.

State Department leaders “didn’t come clean about Benghazi and now they’re not coming clean about these staff changes,” a source close to the situation told The Post., adding, the “public would be outraged over this.”

The Post refers to the Clintonian parsing by State spokesman Victoria Nuland.  Last week, Nuland said that Boswell had immediately resigned as assistant secretary for diplomatic security.  Most assumed that meant Boswell would be out looking for a job, but instead it just meant that Boswell would transfer to another position at State — not much of a punishment for his “deficiencies,” but perhaps a good demonstration of why those deficiencies at State are “systemic.”

The news isn’t getting rave reviews on Capitol Hill, either:

House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairwoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-Fla.) told The Post this is “yet another ruse about the tragedy of Benghazi.”

“State Department officials proclaimed . . . that heads would roll . . . Now we see that the discipline is a lie and all that has happened is the shuffling of the deck chairs.”

That’s what accountability means to the Obama administration, apparently.

Update: Say, where’s Hillary Clinton in all of this, anyway?  Daniel Halper wonders:

In her absence, she’s still been putting out an occasional statement under her own name–but none related to her health. On December 21, she released a written message for Japan National Day and a statement on Kerry’s nomination to replace her. A few days before that, on December 17, she released a statement on the death of Senator Daniel Inouye.

So, what’s Hillary Clinton’s status? Her situation is serious enough to sideline her for two weeks, but we still don’t know what’s going on. How serious is it? Does it prevent her carrying out the secretary of state duties?

Clinton has long-planned to step down as secretary of state “days” after Inauguration Day. The question is, where’s Hillary and will we even see her before she leaves office?

Maybe we won’t see her until she decides to put her track record of “systemic failures” and “leadership and management deficiencies” on the line as an argument to be the next President of the United States.

Can’t the House defund State?

It’s obvious there is no one in the administration capable of answering a call at 3 am. All of these people need to be prosecuted.

“The public would be outraged” but most don’t care or care enough to know anything.

Moreover, the republicans are worthless and there will be no accountability.

I know someone who will not be returning to his post.

Ambassador Stevens.

And they wonder why more and more Americans are purchasing guns. That’s what happens when there is lawlessness.

fogw on December 26, 2012 at 10:39 AM

This deserves a two-pronged approach.

House refuses to fund State Department until there is a full accounting including having Hillary Clinton testify under oath about the circumstances behind the sodimization and murder of Ambassador Stevens. Every single appointment by the rat-eared wonder is given a hold until the aforementioned accounting occurs.

Well, now we will see.

This, combined with Hillary Clinton’s doctor’s excuse, should give all Congressional investigators a massive new impetus to start breaking china.

When I saw the “resignations,” I figured, “well, I guess now the fall guys have been designated and so 0bama has tied this off in a knot.” I was very unhappy with it, but figured that 0bama’s people had made their ritual sacrifice, and done was done.

But now…. we definitely will see what 0bama’s opponents are made of.

Because this is not about being pro- or anti-0bama… this is about the executive branch thumbing its nose at Congress after an American ambassador was murdered. This is a travesty.

So with young guns like Chaffetz, and others, this is their chance to declare war on 0bama and fight this to the bitter end.

What an insult to the People.

Via Drudge, it looks like accountability for the four deaths of Americans in Benghazi turned out to be temporary.

…no accountability coming from the administration that was going to “change the way of doing business in Washington”…..

………….no accountability for the disaster that they are responsible for in Benghazi……

………………no accountability for selling thousands of those “scary military style weapons” to drug cartels that resulted in the deaths of hundreds of people including American law enforcement…….

…………………….no accountability for all the corrupt stealing of billions of taxpayer’s dollars with Obama’s green energy scams that filled the pockets of his campaign bundler’s.

……no accountability for launching a war without Congressional approval against an oil rich country that didn’t attack us and posed no imminent threat.

………and no accountability from a press core that is to busy chasing down Big Bird and playing anti-gun activist.

This is “Hope and Change” that only an idiot liberal could believe in.

Baxter Greene on December 26, 2012 at 10:57 AM

Amazing how Obama can make it lickety-split from a distance of 5000 miles from Hawaii to DC for a faux appearance to accomplish nothing. And yet he couldn’t find a way to send military support from 600 miles away to Benghazi to save American lives.

sauldalinsky on December 26, 2012 at 10:44 AM

I agree wholeheartedly with your second sentence. He should have been investigated and impeached over the coverup of his records, bypassing Congress to make an undeclared, unconstitutional war on Gaddafi, bombing Libyan tanks which apparently were flying over Libya, etc.

But the first sentence…. here’s the tough part….

Watergate was criminal, active actions by people who broke into the Dem headquarters. Nixon was nailed for covering up/ knowing about basically a breaking and entering – an active crime.

Benghazi…. is about a crime of omission – for failing to act. It’s about proving that people actively failed to act.

It’s a lot easier for Hillary et al to give excuses why they failed to react… than for Nixon to claim he knew about an active criminal act, and then failed to act.

How to prove that there was an active crime by Hillary et al – and that 0bama was complicit…

Yes, it’s bigger than Watergate in terms of lives lost, but I think it’s harder to prove guilt.

When Hillary is over her brain damage, she needs to be on the stand immediately and forced to explain how she doesn’t remember. The concussion knocked it right out of her head.

Then she needs to resign for medical reasons, because we can’t have a brain-damaged Sec’y of State, any more than it would be proper to have a brain-damaged vice-president.

Hillary Clinton stood before cameras in the Rose Garden 9/12/12 and lied her ass off about the circumstances. She spun a tale of Muslims offended by some video and an ambassador rescued by other Muslims and rushed to the hospital where he sadly died. There wasn’t a bit of truth in any of it.

She also stood in front of cameras when the bodies of four Americans returned to home soil where she repeated the lies and, more despicably, pledged to the families of the dead that the United States government would conduct a full and open investigation.

Hillary Clinton has not “handled” any aspect of Benghazi. She has evaded testimony up to and including faking illness. It is the time for subpeonas and forced testimony even if Hillary Clinton is on her deathbed.

….worked for Reid.

The underlying horror of all this is that the Executive Branch is getting away with serial violations of the Constitution. When one branch of the government – especially the one charged with upholding it – is not held to account for serial violations, our government has devolved into anarchy and despotism.

I would submit that yes, now we have reached the point, with the 0bama administration, where America is being ruled by a despot.

Earlier and better Americans would have already impeached the man, if not already having surrounded the White House and dragged him out.

The cold truth is that the unraveling of our nation of laws was sent into a death spiral by Bill Clinton, when he lied to the grand jury, then pointed his finger at the nation and lied again, then was rightly impeached for disrespect for the rule of law, but was let off by a complicit MSM and Democrat electorate who said that none of it mattered because it was “all about sex.”

The devolution has proceed apace from that moment.

Yes, it was a total embarrassment to have to nail Clinton on “sex,” but what most of the nation conveniently forgets is that Clinton was being sued for sexually assaulting a woman, and then when she exercised hre legal rights for redress, the defendant lied to the grand jury.

The president is not above the law. As chief enforcer, he MUST obey it.

The failure to eject Clinton on principle as the bell tolling for America.

It destroyed for the foreseeable future the impeachment process, which now should be in full swing to eject this wretched, despotic, disgraceful president.

The system is broken. The constitutional means to eject lawless despots is broken.

The ship of state is on the rocks and the majority of the crew is down in the bilge cutting holes in the hull so that it never floats again.

Therefore, she will be unable to answer questions involving national security. And, that’s how that works.

Do EBT users have to pay overdraft fees out of their next card, or do they not even have to worry about it?

I’m not trying to start a Palin flame-war.
The day she announced on Levin show that she was not running, I said to myself, “America just lost something big.”

In the month leading up to it, she was making speeches and she was on fire.

She would have hit 0bama all about the head and beat him up bad, and the American people would have had a clearer choice…. and she may have even pulled MORE of the single-woman vote than Mitt.

Sure, the campaign would have been chaos…. but I wish the GOP had just let it rip and let her try. I would feel better about the loss right now. After all, she WAS the VP choice in the last election.

It reminds me of Tebow being passed over on the Jets’ depth chart when the season as already lost.

If they were going to destroy her life in ’08 by nominating her as VP, they owed her her shot. Otherwise, they never shuold have nominated her to begin with.

Palin may have actually won – because she would have started a sharp, sustained fight.

And yes, I voted for Mitt and donated to him.

For my part, I’m not giving up – I’m preparing.

As to “fight”, please expound. Checked the news this morning, don’t see any indication of ‘fighting’ going on, so what precisely did you have in mind, given the context of a populace where a majority have decided to be moochers and are convinced they can wring more from the rest of us. Assuming you don’t mean actually taking up arms in a pro-active way, that is.

I’m sorry, I see so many people talking about ‘fighting’ and ‘not giving up’ and it certainly sounds nice, I’m just waiting for someone to put a picture of what they think that looks like on it – because for the most part, it sounds precisely like the usual “tyranny, fascism, losing the country, losing our rights, founding fathers, blargh blargh – just wait until the next election” bullsqueeze we’ve been hearing for awhile now.

Newsflash – “wait til the next election” is the rallying cry of the deluded, and has been for the last few years.

The Dems are, in fact, trying to destroy the country and remake it in their own fashion. They are being successful.

The GOP are unable and unwilling to do anything about it at this point. They are in a position with the House to actually take on the Herculean task of forcing the Senate and WH via ‘purse strings’ to do the right things, but… they won’t.

We passed the last exit of this highway to hell a while back – there’s now really just a single destination with no u-turns, and “this will not be over quickly; we will not enjoy this…”

Am I giving up? No. I am preparing. I hope you are, too.

I think you’re going to get your wish. From the reports I hear, enough business owners are basicall going Galt to create some serious ripples in our economy and the unemployment rate.

Due to the economic multiplication factors involved, I think that even if the “fiscal cliff” is avoided, enough hiring and employment decisions have already been made during the uncertainty to create a deepening recession in 2013 – especially the second half.

Just with my own doctor… he is understaffed but apologized to me for the excessive waits and told me that due to 0bamacare, he’s doing what he has to do.

Things like one secretary being responsible for all pre-auths on procedures, tests, etc.

I waited 10 days for a pre-auth on a fresh knee injury which is getting worse by the day, due to the secretary being overloaded. Going back tomorrow to see about surgery, because I know the knee is blown, but I should have had the answer 2 weeks ago, before it started getting even worse….

The underlying horror of all this is that the Executive Branch is getting away with serial violations of the Constitution. When one branch of the government – especially the one charged with upholding it – is not held to account for serial violations, our government has devolved into anarchy and despotism.

I want Conservative Leadership. I want somebody to stand up on their hind legs and tell Obama the way the cow ate the cabbage. I want someone to actually give a hoot ‘n holler about the average American, not the special interest groups, not the lobbyists, not “the smartest people in the room”…me.

I want an American President and competent American Congress people.

I want a dadblamed budget, first. I want them to be good stewards of MY money. Not their “revenue”. I want someone to stand up and be a MAN…or a WOMAN.

I am so dadgum tired of mealy-mouth squishes and political niceties and expediences, I could spit. Too many Americans are out of work and doing without this Christmas, while the three ring circus performs unabated under the Big Top on Capital Hill.

I will not shut up. I will not “go along to get along”. I will not be cowed. I will not walk around like a dog, who has just been hit with a newspaper.

I along with other Americans, am tired of cleaning up after the donkeys and the elephants.

I will force my disapproval publically and privately, and exercise my right to vote in 2010…for every CONSERVATIVE who runs.

That is how I intend to fight.

Can’t the House defund State?

[coldwarrior on December 26, 2012 at 10:33 AM]

The House can’t defund without concurrence of the Senate and President. They can, however, not fund it. The problem is that they’d have to take that stand through each and every reconciliation of a funding bill.

The result of that process will be the threat of shutting down the government and it will start with the very first funding bill.

Midas on December 26, 2012 at 11:42 AM

Just because there are no U-turns and exits, doesn’t mean that the GOP can’t yell “STOP.”

Example:

I was almost in a four-car pileup on Christmas Eve.

I’m driving 60 mph down a stretch of new highway that goes through a suburban area. Car in the left lane doing 40 in a 55 and causing a jam at night – people all changing lanes to try to get around. I change lanes too. As I pass, I see a young woman driving with her knees… texting with both thumbs – refusing to move. Traffic is swooping and dodging to try to get around her.

Up ahead, I see flashing red lights. Most of us in the pack, trying to get around the selfish young %&^*$, aren’t leaving good following distance yet because we’re trying to reposition to get around the selfish obstacle.

I come closer and see a massive camper being pulled by a pickup, stopped in the left lane with flashing lights on. There are no shoulders on either side of this highway – it’s like an express section – no stopping.

The pack sees it. Suddenly everyone jams on their brakes for no reason. The texting woman sees it late and jams on her brakes and swerves into the right lane. Person in front of me locks up and goes sideways. Car behind the texting woman swerves left and jumps the low divider into oncoming traffic, but no one is coming, thank God. I’m seeing all this very, very quickly, as one can in an emergency. I hit the brakes hard, but with an old truck, know I won’t be able to stop before piling into the sideways car in front of me, and I sure don’t want to lock ‘em up because then I’ll lose all control. At the last split-second of decision I see a small weiner-dog running loose in the right lane by the stopped camper, in front of the sideways car – the dog darts off to the right, into the darkness.

I swerve right and jump the curb, launching into the darkess, getting a couple feet of air, landing in a swale, instead of a deep ditch, thank God, just missing and passing the sideways car in front of me. I’m still moving, and I see the dog dart in front me back onto the road, right to left, coming out of the darkness of the field, followed by a young woman chasing the dog and screaming at it. She runs right in front of my truck and I miss her by 10 feet before sliding to stop in the field, past the sideways car that had been in front of me. All the skidding cars stop for a second, and rubber smoke washs over us.

The screaming young woman scoop the dog off the pavement, runs to the stopped pickup/camper with the flashing lights, jumps in, and the camper hauls a$$ away from all the stopped cars.

I’m sitting there stunned.. almost having run over a human in the dark in a field, who wasn’t supposed to be there…. then, as all the cars slowly get back on the road, I’m thinking, “what the $%^$* did I just see?!?!?”

Had the dog fallen/jumped out, it would have been way back down the road in the dark, instead of directly by the camper. There were no U-turns – no turnarounds – in the area. There were no streetlights… had the pickup/camper been searching for an escaped dog, there’s no way they would have seen it or even known where to look, especially from the left lane.

I finally reach the crazy conclusion that the driver of the pickup/camper purposely stopped dead in the left of a major, fast-moving highway, to let the dog out to pee or poop, traffic be damned. No leash on the dog. The dog got away and the dog and owner almost caused a massive, 60 mph collision at night with poor visibility.

Again, as soon as the young woman jumped in the pickup/camper, it took off. It wasn’t disabled.

Long story… I’m still pissed, still wondering exactly hat I saw on Christmas Eve.

BUT.

WHY CAN’T THE GOP JUST PARK THE RIG IN THE LEFT LANE AND CAUSE THE PILEUP, AS IT’S COMING, ANYWAY?

cane_loader on December 26, 2012 at 12:03 PM

I hear you; I understand what you and king_jester are saying.

My response to your question quoted above is: “they can – but they won’t.”

Why didn’t the GOP pass a ‘fiscal cliff’ bill that included tax CUTS (not increases, not status quo, but cuts – for everyone) AND specific spending cuts – to the point of having a bill that generates a surplus for the year?

Because they’re part of the problem, not the solution at this point. “They can – but they won’t.”

So… having come to that conclusion – that they are part of the problem – I don’t see much fruit to be had in wishing or hoping they suddenly become part of the solution – and doing so seems frustratingly naive and only slightly less delusional than hoping Obama and the Dems will start doing things that are good for the country.

Call it defeatist, call it pragmatic, call it realistic, call it Bob – is it incorrect?

The public, I.E., the low information voters, couldn’t care less about Benghazi; what makes anyone think they’ll be ‘outraged’ about this? As with everything else this pack of liars does…

1.) The administration will put out their message.
2.) The media will parrot it like the lapdogs they are.
3.) And life as we now know it will go on.

An ambassador and his team can be denied protection, left to fend for themselves during an eight hour fire-fight, and then be sodomized and murdered by savages and the electorate shrugs and puts this rat-eared fiend back in the White House. Romney laments the ’47%’ during a private fund-raiser, and is nightime fodder for the media for days on end.
