Open thread: Sunday morning talking heads

posted at 8:01 am on December 23, 2012 by Allahpundit

Not one, not two, but three different NRA honchos will hit the Sunday shows this morning as part of the group’s gun-control counteroffensive. The man in the spotlight: David Gregory, who’ll be torn to shreds by the left if he doesn’t channel their id and tear Wayne LaPierre to shreds on their behalf.

There’ll be some navel-gazing about Boehner and Plan B and what it all means too. The line-up via National Journal:

Meet the Press hosts NRA CEO Wayne LaPierre, Sen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., Sen. Lindsey Graham, S.C., and Rep. Jason Chaffetz, R-Utah,

Face the Nation hosts NRA President David Keene, Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison, R-Texas., Sen. Mark Warner, D-Va., and Sen.-designate Tim Scott, R-S.C.,

This Week hosts the NRA’s Asa Hutchinson, Brady Center’s Sarah Brady, Sen. Johnny Isakson, R-Ga., and Sen. Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn.

Fox News Sunday hosts Sen. John Barrasso, R-Wyo., and Sen. Kent Conrad, D-N.D.

State of the Union will feature Sen. Joe Lieberman, D-Conn., former Rep. Asa Hutchinson, R-Ark., and Reps. Mick Mulvaney, R-S.C., and Steve LaTourrette, R-Ohio

why do you need a semi-automatic with a big magazine clip to hunt duck?

how many times will we hear that this am?

Yep, nothing like spending the day two days before Christmas talking about guns, guns, guns, murdered children, and more guns.

How much you want to bet you will hear 0% being discussed over the problem of mental health in this country and how it was the KEY factor in what happened in Newtown CT two weeks ago?

I’m just wondering if any of the DBM shows today will pick up on what Judge Jeanine Pirro had to say last night on FNC.
Turns out the State Dept.,without the comatose hillary of course, issued its findings on Ben Ghazi, a Jewish fellow living in up state New York I hear.
Turns out it was all Ambassador Stevens fault all the time! Who new!! Who’d a thunk it!
Turns out all his requests for additional security, the bombings/ attacks in the terrorists infested area, all the other embassies closing down were all just incidental and had no bearing of the terror attack. It was all a gay rogue ambassador out there funneling arms all over the Mid-East all on his own. The ambassador went Rogue!! He went off the well known reservation and failed to tow the state dept. line.Basically Chris Stevens went Palin. He went rogue.
Who knew!
Also turns out Benghazi was all about 2016 and the hill/billy Clintons.
Seems the bent axel has already taken over their lives and they are now controlled by the axel/NYT cabal which elected the Zero/Jarrett regime.
Since nothing bad can be said or painted on Hillary for the next four years the next best fall guy was the gay ambassador. We just didn’t know it until the State Dept.(absent hillary) filled us in.
Once again if the truth gets out it will be due to the New Media, right herein River City.Lets hope it happens.

I was hopeful they would spend s’more time on mental health. Christmas can be a bad time of year for folks with mental health issues. Guess it just doesn’t fit the narrative/agenda. Too bad. Many folks die right before Christmas also, that would make for a more interesting topic than guns. Guns are inanimate objects. They don’t have mental Heath issues or die. Oh well. Maybe the first shows of the New Year./

I dont remember the Second Amendment or the Federalist Papers mentioning hunting, but they do mention being able to bear arms in order to protect yourself from an oppressive government. It’s going to be hard to protect yourself when you’re back to a musket and government jack booted thugs have automatic weapons. The founders knew this and gave us the gift of the Second Amendment. If these gun grabbing, constitution trampling clowns are not stopped now, by any means necessary, we are doomed to be subjects rather than citizens. My oath as a retired military member, is to the constitution…not the government or the President. I hope the military members still on active duty remember that when they’re ordered to confiscate weapons from their fellow citizens. We’ve reached the point where there is nothing left to talk about…you have to choose being a subject or a citizen…

Doomsday on December 23, 2012 at 9:19 AM

You have to admit.. these NRA guys know how to take it and know how to dish it out. The Republican leadership could take a few lessons from them.

Slade73 on December 23, 2012 at 8:50 AM

It’s not an issue of a free market, but society as a whole that has sort of swept the subject of mental health back under the carpet. If the issue wasn’t the taboo subject it is now, there is a good chance that Adam Lanza could have gotten the help he needed a long time ago and Newtown CT would have remained a quiet little community with 27 people in particular among them still with us.

George W. Bush had an alternative policy for dealing with dishonest, divisive leftist attacks: he stayed silent, remaining above the fray, he thought.

As a result, the left scored uncontested wins with all its attacks, and as years go by we never, ever hear the end of damning George W. Bush.

The NRA is right. Push-back is mandatory, not optional.

While the Heller case seemed to leave the door open for “reasonable” restrictions, we all know that the party in power tends to define reasonable.

But the Court did leave us with some guidance. From Justice Scalia’s majority opinion:

Some have made the argument, bordering on the frivolous, that only those arms in existence in the 18th century are protected by the Second Amendment. We do not interpret constitutional rights that way. Just as the First Amendment protects modern forms of communications, e.g., Reno v. American Civil Liberties Union, 521 U.S. 844,849 (1997), and the Fourth Amendment applies to modern forms of search, e.g., Kyllo v. United States, 533 U. S. 27, 35–36 (2001), the Second Amendment extends, prima facie, to all instruments that constitute bearable arms, even those that were not in existence at the time of the founding.

So, for starters, an argument that the Second Amendment limits us to firearms in use in 1789 would not meet the reasonableness test.

To determine what is or is not reasonable regarding any Constitutional Right, prior case law would certainly be relevant. Prior to Heller, the only US Supreme Court case to deal with this issue was United States v. Miller decided in 1939. The issue in that case concerned the ownership and interstate transportation of a sawed-off shotgun and the restrictions imposed under the National Firearms Act. While the court did not get to the issue of whether the Second Amendment provided an individual right to keep and bear arms, it did provide some seemingly valuable guidance.

Unfortunately for Mr. Miller, the Court ruled against him. But their reasoning is enlightening:

“In the absence of any evidence tending to show that possession or use of a ‘shotgun having a barrel of less than eighteen inches in length’ at this time has some reasonable relationship to the preservation or efficiency of a well regulated militia, we cannot say that the Second Amendment guarantees the right to keep and bear such an instrument.”

Based on the language in Miller, if one owns a firearm that bears a reasonable relationship to the preservation or efficiency of a well regulated militia, that firearm would certainly be protected by the Second Amendment. Like a rifle or handgun styled after those used in active military service.

Every adult able bodied citizen would be considered to be a member of the militia as that term is used in the Constitution. The last line of defense.

I have read and re-read the Second Amendment and the Constitution many, many times. And I have never seen a limitation on the right to bear arms related to hunting purposes only, nor have I found any commentary by the founding fathers expressing concern about repelling an invasion of ducks or other forms of wildlife.

And one more thought: Those that seek to restrict a Constitutional right should take heed, lest they invoke the “law of unintended consequences”. No one right in the Bill of Rights is greater than the other, and any limitation, curtailment or revocation of any one right can be likewise imposed on any other right.

As the Second Amendment goes, so goes the Bill of Rights.

Today, likewise, such should be held dear by all Americans…unless they are willingly on the side of tyranny.

We have others here with that same experience. Where from?

*I’m in Illinois, too. Downstate.*

Outstanding Campaign managers are obviously in short supply on our side.

rodguy911 on December 23, 2012 at 9:50 AM

This. We need candidates who are not only dynamic, but capable of managing their own campaigns. Too many “campaign managers” on our side appear to be in it more for the money and exposure than really winning.

Can somebody tell me where in the Second Amendment it states anything about hunting ducks, deer or varmints?

Looking back at the time it was written, having an able and armed civilian population as a last ditch effort against tyranny was held dear to all the Founders.

Today, likewise, such should be held dear by all Americans…unless they are willingly on the side of tyranny.

coldwarrior on December 23, 2012 at 9:50 AM

can someone state that I can’t use my guns for other things besides the Government?

FYI for those who are all about the 2nd, but forget one thing. If you have a gun for protection, you have it for food as well. Think about it.

Sorry I forgot the rules for a second.
Always bow to the DNC/DBM and bow even lower to the Saudis or the ruskies. Especially now that the Dear Leader has “more flexibility.”

I thnk it depends on the level of the campaign. At the Senate level or higher few can control their own campaign.
But you are right more conservative candidates who have multi-tasking skills is the answer.

Owning and keeping an anti-tyranny device gives one the added benefit of not having to shop Safeway for protein-based animal parts.

But, being a longtime student of history, I am pretty positive that the Second Amendment was not at all designed with hunters in mind.

Lots of European nations held that if a civilian owned a weapon, firearm or sword, without permission or charter from the Crown, one could be imprisoned or worse. Pitchforks thus were the norm when storming the royal castle.

The definition of “assault weapons” will finally be settled…whew!

d1carter on December 23, 2012 at 10:03 AM

I was doing some last minute Christmas shopping yesterday and of the one local gun stores parking was completely full and people were parking up to 3/4 of a mile away. They were selling weapons and magazines faster than the talking Elmo at its peak. I went to another “western” store and the gun counter was the busiest part of the store with people buying weapons and ammunition. I went to look for some 7.62 ammo and it was all sold out.

One thing is for sure and that is the Demonrats and liberals are darn well making sure we have an armed citizenry. If they start getting serious about confiscation, there is going to be some serious resistance.

At least exercise more control over messaging and what states the campaign will go to. SP wanted to go to Michigan. She got shot down. Her husband is a union guy, so what could it have hurt? Instead, they didn’t even try. Ya can’t win if ya don’t play.

For a liberal the definition is easy…any firearm is an assault weapon and must be banned/confiscated. See how easy that is.

tell that to people who actually use “tyranny devices” before they had to use them as weapons for war.

CorporatePiggy on December 23, 2012 at 10:26 AM

Between ABC’s This Week and Fox News Sunday, it’s clear that there are few good speakers on the side of the 2nd Amendment. Some of these arguments are so easy to refute, but they go unanswered.

Any time “assault weapon” is brought up it should be instantly refuted, and the questioner should be asked to define what one is.

Any time there’s talk of banning the “gun show loophole,” it should be thrown back in the face of its user and shown for what it really is – a proposed ban on private sales and the prohibition of passing on a family heirloom (ie. gun) without government interference. And it should be hammered home that all firearms sellers INSIDE a gunshow are required to perform background checks on gun sales.

Lastly, the 2nd Amendment is a civil right. This needs to be soundly stated any time there is talk of any restriction. We wouldn’t entertain curtailing 1st Amendment rights without a battle, but of course the hue and cry is for speedy action in this case. The anti-gunners want only to infringe upon the rights of their fellow Americans so they may feel righteous themselves.

quax1 on December 23, 2012 at 10:15 AM

a lot of people do. But here is the thing about the 2nd amendment and hunting… the government and ignorant individuals do not care.

What happens (hypothetically) that the government wants to take/confiscate guns. What are you going to say to them when they come for yours? “I am sorry, but this semi automatic .22, is only used to hunt rabbits.” They aren’t going to give a crap about that. They are going to take everything, including your great grandfathers old antique musket that really shouldn’t be shot anyways.

The government and liberals and ignorant individuals don’t care. To them a gun is a gun and it is a problem and they should be gone.

upinak on December 23, 2012 at 10:29 AM

We need a national discussion on the 1st amendment to see if there needs to be some changes to improve it…

d1carter on December 23, 2012 at 10:50 AM

Gregory made a great point. Who is going to fund these officers in the schools? It could be $2bn a year, as in a fraction of the ‘aid’ we give to foreign countries that support terrorism.

Priorities!
