Obama to gun-control petitioners: “We hear you”

posted at 2:46 pm on December 21, 2012 by Allahpundit

Three minutes of video that have less to do with pushing specific policies to reduce gun violence than pushing his supporters to keep up the pressure. One of O’s biggest obstacles in passing something is the public’s notoriously short attention span after a mass shooting. If the White House couldn’t get something through Congress after one of its own members was shot in the head by a lunatic, odds that they’ll get something passed in January, after a long holiday break and more fiscal-cliff clusterfarkery, are low. (Then again, Obama never really tried to pass something after Tucson because, as always, his reelection was more important to him than gun control.) He needs an all-hands-on-deck public pressure campaign by O-bots to keep the heat on, if only so that he can better demagogue Republicans later — the Clinton playbook — for failing to Do Something when the bill fails in the House.

Have a look at Pew’s new poll today to see just how tenuous his position is. Less than a week after 20 kids were killed, he still can’t get to 50 percent on whether it’s more important to “control gun ownership” than protect gun rights. Twenty years ago, 45% said the NRA had too much influence over gun laws; today, just 36% say so. (The number who say the NRA has either too little influence or the right amount exceeds the number who say it has too much.) This is a rare cultural issue on which opinion has become more conservative over time, enough so that O’s worried that even the bully pulpit and a national burst of grief over murdered children won’t be enough to deliver policy change. They might have enough momentum to get a very modest bill done; if they focused exclusively on high-capacity magazines or hollow-point bullets, they might peel off enough Republicans in the House to make it happen. But Obama’s already invested too much rhetorically in something bigger so he’s obviously playing a longer game of getting the House GOP to spike a new assault-weapons ban and then hoping it helps deliver the House back to Pelosi in 2014.

One silver-y lining for Democrats from Pew, though: On this issue as with so many others, younger voters are firmly in their corner.

With the glaring exception of seniors, those demographics break just as you’d expect given the results of the national exit poll in November. But as I say, young voters are the key. Heavy gun regulation is impossible now but, unless something changes, might not be in another 10-20 years. Gun rights advocates had better ramp up their outreach to them, replete with efforts to encourage ownership (which correlates strongly with support for gun rights, as you might expect), to make them more comfortable with guns or else trouble’s on the way.

Here’s the Audio of the NY Gov. Talking Gun Control: ‘Confiscation Could Be an Option’
http://www.theblaze.com/stories/heres-the-audio-of-ny-gov-talking-gun-control-confiscation-could-be-an-option/

Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo (D-N.Y.) said Thursday that all options, including confiscation and “mandatory sales to the state,” would be on the table next month when the New York State Legislature debates new gun control measures. The comments were specifically aimed at what might happen should stricter rules be imposed on “assault” weapons and high-capacity magazines.

“There’s a big difference of opinion on these issues,” Gov. Cuomo said today during a radio interview with Albany’s WGDJ-AM.

The governor also explained that he would focus his attention on changing state laws regarding the possession of what the media confusingly calls “assault weapons” (“there’s no real definition of the term,” the Washington Examiner’s Tim Carney notes) and high-capacity ammunition magazines.

The idea of weighing too heavily on “young voters” to believe in protecting arms rights is misleading at best. For one, nearly a third of the age ground 18-28 can’t legally buy guns. Furthermore, the only thing they own as a general rule is student loan debt. So there’s not much in the way of property (and the responsibility to protect it) that makes the Second Amendment so important to those of us who do have businesses, property, and livelihoods that need protecting.

There was a sale at the local Post Exchange, so I went ahead and put my money where my mouth is and bought a FN Herstal FNX 9mm. Figured I’d get the three 17 round magazines while the getting was good. That and it feels great in the hand.

So, the store is robbed and they’re the ones to be raided. I wonder how far the government will take this. Can’t ban guns that easily, so simply raid the places that sell them. Reminds me of a certain movie director arrested after Benghazi.

Just like the maker of the anti-Muhammad video nobody watched. I bet the owners get hauled off to jail in the middle of the night for some minor technicality.

If we only had some GOP leaders like Newt. Or a Nancy Pelosi or a Harry Reid.

Nobody on our side seems to have any courage. Nobody wants to confront evil head on. All we ever want to do with it is compromise.

It’s going to be a very rough 4 years. Maybe if the winds change direction somehow, we can triumph in 2014. But what are the odds? What nation will be left to defend freedom in the earth today? It’s like we’re nearing the end of western civilization.

And all our leaders can do is compromise or offer up the plans of the enemy as their own (Plan B, for instance). We have nothing. No ideas. No vision. No creativity. No passion. No courage. Only white flags of surrender. We surrender to Hollywood. We surrender to the media. We surrender to the Democrats. We surrender to anyone and everyone.
And the majority of the people we surrender to are mice. Propped up by the media. They couldn’t stand on their own legs if they tried but we surrender to them. We never expose them. Confront them or challenge them. We bow to them.

That’s the current Republican leadership today.

Gun Supplier Sells 3.5 Years Worth of Magazines — in Just 3 Days!

Brownells, the world’s largest supplier of firearms, has reportedly sold three-and-a-half years worth of magazines in just seventy-two hours.

“Brownells CEO said:

“I wanted to take a minute to shed some insight on the magazine situation if I can. First of all I wanted to offer an apology for the situation… with magazines being ‘In-Stock’ and back-ordered moments later… [The] demand for magazines actually exceeded the ability for the system to keep up with the volume that was being ordered.”

“To shed some more light on the magazine situation at present, it really has been unprecedented in the last 5 days. During a roughly 72 hour period…we sold the ‘average demand’ equivalent of about 3.5 years worth of PMAGS, and an even greater amount of our Brownells magazines.”

Gun Supplier Sells 3.5 Years Worth of Magazines — in Just 3 Days!

Dunno what the big deal is. If things really do go south, I think there will be plenty of spare ammo and magazines floating around.

Which particular weapon are you referring to? If you’re referring to the Desert Eagle platform, I do like the concept of a fixed barrel automatic, but I’m not a fan of rimmed cartridges (.357, .44) in magazines, and the .50 AE is impractical with its low mag capacity, lack of load variety, and general scarcity.

A couple of nights ago when I was at the gun shop to buy ammo, I also wanted to buy a standard 15-round mag for my Glock 19, but the Glock mag section was virtually empty. The only ones they had left were the 33-round variant. In other words, thanks to Obama, I was forced to buy a “high-capacity” magazine when I didn’t even really want one. (I picked a fine time to misplace my spare mag.)

Who would want a .50 pistol cartridge anyway?

It doesn’t matter if you don’t like rimmed cartridges in a pistol magazine, they work just fine.

It was a great idea, but not for mortal men.
Re: dense. It’s a necessity these days.

WryTrvllr on December 21, 2012 at 6:29 PM

I never claimed to be mortal, and they really ain’t that big with the 6″ barrel. The only people who have trouble with them are those with weak arms. They go limp after firing and sometimes the next round doesn’t cycle.

What I was getting at though was the line of “Baby Eagles”. Jericho pistols made for Magnum Research. Those are some really fine guns with operating controls similar to the larger caliber big sisters. Enough weight to satisfy old school shooters a very good feel and smooth as a baby’s bottom.

so if we ban guns and ammo and make it illegal to own them then they would not be on our streets? Great idea, has anyone thought of doing this to heroin, cocaine or meth? I think that he may be on to something.

Maybe they could go one better and just make murder illegal.

Prohibition of heroin, et al, has worked so well that an outright ban on murder, rape, armed robbery should work wonders.

More details are out about Adam Lanza. One important thing is that his mother apparently did, in fact, did her weapons in a locker despite accusations from a certain troll here.

“…The basement of the Lanza home was fully carpeted and had artwork, including a picture of a horse, on the walls. There was a computer, a flat-screen television, couches and an elaborate setup for video games. Nancy Lanza kept her guns in what appeared to be a secure case in another part of the basement, Ford said…”

Okay, the story stated that the Bushmaster was the gun used in the killings. That is the second time I have read that.

Did the scumbag use the rifle, or the pistols? What was left in the car?

cozmo on December 21, 2012 at 7:49 PM

When I moved into town, my next purchase was a gun safe. Memorized the combo, but did write it down in an unusual location, and threw away the paperwork. Six hundred pounds and ten locking lugs in the door, and hours of guaranteed fire resistance. Could have bought a very nice title for the price, but, it was worth it for the peace of mind.

If you live in a suburb, in a 1.3 million dollar home, and have a disturbed child, maybe this should be on the shopping list.
