Piers Morgan to gun-rights advocate: “You’re an unbelievably stupid man, aren’t you?”

posted at 7:41 pm on December 19, 2012 by Allahpundit

Via News Busters, the media id unleashed. Your companion reading for this clip is Byron York’s piece about cable-news sanctimony over gun control this week, and not just from the prime-time commentators either. Says York:

Why such open advocacy? What seems to have happened is that some journalists have assumed that since everyone is horrified by what happened in Newtown, everyone should also be united on what should be done about it, and that what should be done is the imposition of more stringent gun control measures. Guests who disagree can be in for a very public scolding.

I think it’s less them wanting people to be united than enjoying a temporary license to yell at the sort of people they wish they could yell at every day. Under normal circumstances, you can’t be as big of a jackhole to your guests as Morgan is here; “professionalism” requires some basic measure of civility. But with the public grieving over 20 children shot dead, you’re momentarily free to be as big of a jackhole as you want in the name of “passion” and outrage over what happened. A big part of the Do Something impulse comes from the guilt and impotence people naturally feel over having failed to protect those kids. One way to temper those feelings is to endorse broad gun-control measures, no matter how many innocent gun owners would be affected by them and how few would-be rampage killers would be deterred. The angrier you are, the more aggressive the policy response that you endorse, the more you supposedly care. Another way is to scream at or, in extreme cases, even threaten gun-rights advocates. We can’t kill Adam Lanza but maybe we can at least intimidate the sort of people who’d defend his right to carry a gun. Even though no one’s defending Adam Lanza’s right to carry a gun.

Anyway, three polls for you this afternoon. The one that’s getting attention is CNN’s because it’s the one that’s most useful to the left. And yet it’s still not very useful:

The number of Americans who favor major restrictions or an outright ban has typically hovered just under the 50% mark in recent years; now that number is just over 50%. According to the poll 52% say they favor major restrictions on guns or making all guns illegal. That’s a five point rise from a CNN survey conducted in early August, following the mass shooting in July at a movie theater in suburban Denver, Colorado that left 12 dead, and shootings two weeks later at a Sikh temple in suburban Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where six people were killed. The five point rise is within the poll’s sampling error…

The survey indicates the expected partisan divide on gun control. Nearly eight in ten Democrats say they favor major restrictions on owning guns or an outright ban. That number drops to 42% among independents and 31% among Republicans. There’s also a gender gap, with 41% of men saying say support major restrictions or an outright ban, with that number jumping to 62% among women.

Four days after one of the most horrendous crimes in modern American history, involving the most sympathetic victims imaginable, gun-control advocates can muster only the slimmest majority for major regulations — within the margin of error — and nothing close to those numbers among independents and Republicans. (The most interesting number from the poll, showing 62% support for banning “semi-automatic assault guns,” is going nowhere legislatively.) And as Obama and congressional Democrats know full well, even those weak numbers will begin to fade along with the news coverage of Sandy Hook. He needs to act fast. Meanwhile, over at Gallup, the public’s priorities already lie elsewhere:

Not only does banning semiautomatics trail far behind increased spending on mental health as a solution, but the number of those who think having school officials carry would be at least “somewhat effective” is actually slightly higher than the number who say the same about a ban. (Only 36 percent of independents support the ban. As with the CNN poll, all the public-opinion heavy lifting for gun control is being done by Democrats.) Rasmussen asked a question similar to Gallup’s — which of these options would be most effective in preventing mass shootings? — and once again better mental-health treatments trumped gun control, 48/27. Makes me wonder if all the talk about gun-grabbing lately is, at least in some parts, a sly ploy to convince fiscal conservatives that spending more on mental health is the lesser of two evils vis-a-vis regulating guns. In Gallup’s poll, just 35 percent of Republicans wanted the government to spend more on treating mental illness but that was still nine points higher than those who wanted to ban semiautomatics as a solution.

Oh well. A determined agenda will not be deterred, public support or no. (See also, e.g., ObamaCare.) First up: A ban on high-capacity magazines. Will that stop the next Lanza? Nah, probably not. Oh, and in related news, there’s suddenly a run on guns at major retailers.

Increasing the Police Presence at schools: 87% think it will be very effective or somewhat effective.

The GOP should have been out day one screaming for this. I know some conservatives don’t like talking about politics after tragic events like this, and some conservatives might not care for paying for the police protection in schools, but you have to do something. Doing nothing allows the democrats to set the narrative. This should be our counter to those pushing for banning semi-automatic weapons: This is a protection issue and perhaps a mental health issue, not a gun issue.

Be aggressive in defending that argument, attack, pound, that on every tv interview, every speech, every chance. Most Americans get this instinctively, they just need to be led to the truth.

Here’s a good article from the JPFO, on how to convince irrational, emotional anti gunners :

http://jpfo.org/filegen-n-z/ragingagainstselfdefense.htm

You should never try to break down a defense mechanism by force. Remember that defense mechanisms protect people from feelings they cannot handle, and if you take that protection away, you can cause serious psychological harm. And because defense mechanisms operate unconsciously, it won’t do any good to show an anti–gun person this article or to point out that he’s using defense mechanisms. Your goal is gently and gradually to help the person to have a more realistic and rational view of the world. This cannot be done in one hour or one day.
As you reach out to people in this way, you need to deal with both the illogical thought processes involved and the emotional reactions that anti–gun people have to firearms. When dealing with illogical thought processes, you are attempting to use reason and logic to convince the anti–gun person that his perception of other people and his perception of firearms are seriously inaccurate. The goal is to help him to understand that armed citizens and firearms are not threats, and may even save his life.

Or you can just smash’em

The last Brit this mad about gun control on this side of the pond was King George III.

Do note that Lanza had 20 minutes of free fire time in the school before police arrived, per the CNN timeline. The reality is that he could have used any sort of firearm – with the possible exception of a musket – and still have accomplished the same amount of carnage. And the reality is that a 20 minute response time from police in such an instance is more the norm than the exception.

The only thing that could have actually stopped this shooter before he massacred 26 women and children would have been other people with weapons at the point of attack.

We are heralding the principal of Sandy Hook and others who lunged towards the shooter in an effort to stop him. They are dead. We are heralding a teacher who hid her students. She was murdered.

We as a nation should prefer to be heralding these people as living heroes, one of whom ended the massacre by killing the shooter. The only rational course of action in the wake of Sandy Hook is to end gun free zones and allow schools to arm some of their staff per reasonable requirements. It is not to enact a ludicrous ban on weapons whose sole sin is that they scare progressives.

step into the Wayback Machine, Sherman.
This video is from the late 80s, in the wake of the Stockton schoolyard shooting that led directly to the CA AWB in 1989.
In the video, a San Jose police officer attempts to explain the distinctions between full-auto, semi-auto, the similarities between appearances in rifles.
As you listen, keep in mind he’s a CA police officer, CA doesn’t allow private ownership of full-auto weapons, thus his repeated references to them being illegal. They are legal in 40 states, just heavily regulated. And since the 1986 FOPA, massively more expensive.
Anyway, the striking thing about this video is that it illustrates the press et al are repeating the very same lies and distortions today.

As you can see the UK crime rate comes as a pie chart with percentages… however they note that there were a total of 9.5 million crimes total… so one simply takes the “all violence” section’s percentages and then multiply .22 by 9.5 million.. which is how I got that number.

The US gun death rate is remarkably low when one considers how many guns we have. If our gun death rate was comparable to other countries with low ownership you’d have a point, but it’s not and you don’t.

Liberals like to take all of their own views as “givens,” and limit any actual argument to torrents of abuse against people who are insufficiently enlightened to hold those views.

After Sandy Hook, we’ve been treated to the disgusting spectacle of liberals climbing up on top of little bodies and shrieking at us that our disagreement with their views (and belief in liberty) makes us the moral equivalent of murderers.

Of less interest to the liberals is the fact that mass shootings invariably take place in “gun-free” zones. Or the fact that gun laws tend to disarm law-abiding people more than criminals. Or the fact that gun laws have, statistically, not succeeded in preventing gun violence.

In the end, this is about advancing statism, not saving children. After all, if the liberals were so concerned about saving children, they’d probably be less unanimously in favor of abortion.

Ann Coulter has an excellent piece today about some ‘study’ of mass murders using firearms. That joke of a study used only killings involving four or more victims–all of which were in gun-free zones.

Cases of fewer than four always involved someone who had a licensed concealed weapon acting in time to prevent more deaths. Of course, the ‘study’ decided not to count those instances.

I guess liberals don’t consider fewer than four murders to be mass killings.

AP, you discuss this as if the split (pro/con) is within the margin of error. That’s not what they’re saying. Theey’re saying the polling sample is so bad that the 5% rise stayed within the margin of error. So, the sample error is at least 6%. That’s horrendous by today’s standards.

Exactly it is a perception of safety rather than actual safety. As part of my Masters program in my Probability Class (Stats) a friend and I did a comprehensive analysis of crime statistics on Guam. The reason for our choice was that both the Air Force and Navy had housing units that was located off of their major bases and not behind any fencing. The people who lived in the naval housing perceived they were less safe and that more B&E’s were going on. We provided the finished reports to the Air Force Wing Commander, Naval Base Commander’s (3 different Naval Bases), Gov Guam and are Class Instructor. We had to provide the finished reports to all of them since it was the only way they would release the data to us. Interestingly enough there was no statistical difference in the crime rates in the various military housing units regardless of location. Whether it actually changed perceptions after we submitted to the various authorities is a different issue.

Curiously self-righteous comment, considering the US was founded by people voluntarily moving in search of freedom, whereas Australia was colonized by the UK forcefully shipping off all of the prisoners and other societal scum to get rid of them.
Since the UK disarmed their citizens, they now have more than double the violent crime rate than the US has. So how’s that liberal philosphy actually working out?
Meanwhile Switzerland, a country with near universal gun ownership, has about the lowest violent crime rate in the world.

Of course it doesn’t. Part of the problem with the mentally ill is they don’t necessarily think that they are mentally ill – and therefore they don’t believe they need help. And with current laws like HIPAA – nobody else in the family is allowed to know what’s going or or do anything about it.

Hey moron,

I keep asking one simple question, with an obvious answer: Name ONE, just ONE mass shooting occurance that involved a CONSERVATIVE gun owner.

Too bad same idiots who do such cowardly crimes belong to one and same group: Liberal/Progressive/communist. Too bad we have cowards in LSM who are afraid to point out the obvious.

Oh, can you tell us what will happen to a woman in London’s or Paris’ heavily muslim blocks if she decides to visit wearing a mini-skirt. Yep, call it “civilized society” and “freedom”. Moron is as moron does. Go back to Koz where you belong with the rest of luntics… Its morons like you that are responsible for the decay of USA…

Politicians and idiots think more laws will change a criminals behavior and the rational know that the same thing done over and over without changing the outcome is idiotic. We need to change something else and I think we should try the punishment change. As of now our prisons are nothing but fenced health clubs with the exception of Sheriff Jo’s prison. We need to talk to people where there is an effective alternative that works, enough of these experts provided by our government. I’m for bringing back the whipping post for the smaller crimes. The Brits took their cat-O-9 tails off their punishment roster in 1948, I understand the State of Delaware was our last State here where the Cat was used. As of now a person can get more time for stealing money than murder. Florida still has a death penalty and I’m sure every criminal knows that and it hasn’t stopped all the murders in Florida but I’ll bet it stopped some. Do you think a wife beater after getting 40 lashes with the cat would consider changing his attitude?

mixplix on December 20, 2012 at 1:30 PM

And btw, this isn’t just a “gun-rights advocate”… this is Larry Pratt, head of Gun Owners of America (GOA), a much more conservative version of the NRA… and one that should be supported more. I had the chance to meet Larry 2 years ago when a friend of mine picked him up to transport him to a machine-gun shoot (which was AWESOME). I had a chance to talk with him for a while, and he had lots of stories. Larry is a great guy and extremely knowledgeable!

One thing he pointed out… with our concerns about over-reach of government power, the one office we should strongly support is that of sheriff. While many think it a largely ceremonial office, the truth is that since they are elected by the people, they are beholden to protect the people… even from other government agencies. Larry had a few stories where local sheriffs threatened to lock up federal agents when they started overstepping their bounds. That’s why there’s always a concern of jurisdictions. In the case of jurisdictions, the sheriff rules. We should make sure that those who serve in the office of sheriff understand that responsibility.

What’s bewildering to many americans is European culture.

Falsely stereotyped as civilized, Europe is in reality a seething cauldron of ethnic and religious hatred that boils over every thirty to fifty years in an apocalyptic orgy of bloodshed.

The average number of murders per year in Europe for the last hundred years is 325,000. The single worst year in the US was 24,700.

The scary thing is, Europe is boiling over again as we speak. the Nazi party has won its first electoral victories since the 1934 German elections this year. The economies of Greece, Spain, France and Italy are going under. The Eu is turning out to be a failure and is heading for a breakup. And new polls out of Europe show that between 20% and 40% (depending on the country) of Europeans beleive jews have too much power over the banking system (yep… Europe’s going there… AGAIN!).

The seeds are all there and they are starting to sprout. Give me an America with a shcool shooting every week and a Europe that stays quiet for 30 years and then freaks out and kills 5 million people and I’ll take America every time.

Alberta_Patriot on December 20, 2012 at 4:07 PM

To the citizens of the United States of America from Her Sovereign Majesty Queen Elizabeth II

In light of your failure in recent years to nominate competent candidates for President of the USA and thus to govern yourselves, we hereby give notice of the revocation of your independence, effective immediately.

Her Sovereign Majesty Queen Elizabeth II will resume monarchical duties over all states, commonwealths, and territories (except Kansas, which she does not fancy).

Your new Prime Minister, David Cameron , will appoint a Governor for America without the need for further elections.

Congress and the Senate will be disbanded. A questionnaire may be circulated next year to determine whether any of you noticed.

To aid in the transition to a British Crown dependency, the following rules are introduced with immediate effect:

1. The letter ‘U’ will be reinstated in words such as ‘colour,’ ‘favour,’ ‘labour’ and ‘neighbour.’ Likewise, you will learn to spell ‘doughnut’ without skipping half the letters, and the suffix ‘-ize’ will be replaced by the suffix ‘-ise.’ Generally, you will be expected to raise your vocabulary to acceptable levels. ).

2. Using the same twenty-seven words interspersed with filler noises such as ”like’ and ‘you know’ is an unacceptable and inefficient form of communication. There is no such thing as U.S. English. We will let Microsoft know on your behalf. The Microsoft spell-checker will be adjusted to take into account the reinstated letter ‘u” and the elimination of ‘-ize.’

3. July 4th will no longer be celebrated as a holiday.

4. You will learn to resolve personal issues without using guns, lawyers, or therapists. The fact that you need so many lawyers and therapists shows that you’re not quite ready to be independent. Guns should only be used for shooting grouse. If you can’t sort things out without suing someone or speaking to a therapist, then you’re not ready to shoot grouse.

5. Therefore, you will no longer be allowed to own or carry anything more dangerous than a vegetable peeler. Although a permit will be required if you wish to carry a vegetable peeler in public.

6. All intersections will be replaced with roundabouts, and you will start driving on the left side with immediate effect. At the same time, you will go metric with immediate effect and without the benefit of conversion tables. Both roundabouts and metrication will help you understand the British sense of humour.

7. The former USA will adopt UK prices on petrol (which you have been calling gasoline) of roughly $10/US gallon. Get used to it.

8. You will learn to make real chips. Those things you call French fries are not real chips, and those things you insist on calling potato chips are properly called crisps. Real chips are thick cut, fried in animal fat, and dressed not with catsup but with vinegar.

9. The cold, tasteless stuff you insist on calling beer is not actually beer at all. Henceforth, only proper British Bitter will be referred to as beer, and European brews of known and accepted provenance will be referred to as Lager. South African beer is also acceptable, as they are pound for pound the greatest sporting nation on earth and it can only be due to the beer. They are also part of the British Commonwealth – see what it did for them. American brands will be referred to as Near-Frozen Gnat’s Urine, so that all can be sold without risk of further confusion.

10. Hollywood will be required occasionally to cast English actors as good guys. Hollywood will also be required to cast English actors to play English characters. Watching Andie Macdowell attempt English dialogue in Four Weddings and a Funeral was an experience akin to having one’s ears removed with a cheese grater.

11. You will cease playing American football. There is only one kind of proper football; you call it soccer. Those of you brave enough will, in time, be allowed to play rugby (which has some similarities to American football, but does not involve stopping for a rest every twenty seconds or wearing full kevlar body armour like a bunch of nancies).

12. Further, you will stop playing baseball. It is not reasonable to host an event called the World Series for a game which is not played outside of America. Since only 2.1% of you are aware there is a world beyond your borders, your error is understandable. You will learn cricket, and we will let you face the South Africans first to take the sting out of their deliveries.

13. You must tell us who killed JFK. It’s been driving us mad.

14. An internal revenue agent (i.e. tax collector) from Her Majesty’s Government will be with you shortly to ensure the acquisition of all monies due (backdated to 1776).

15. Daily Tea Time begins promptly at 4 p.m. with proper cups, with saucers, and never mugs, with high quality biscuits (cookies) and cakes; plus strawberries (with cream) when in season.

God Save the Queen!

OK,you missed the whole point, let me try again.

The English are feeling the pinch in relation to recent events in Syria and have therefore raised their security level from “Miffed” to “Peeved.”
Soon, though, security levels may be raised yet again to “Irritated” or even “A Bit Cross.” The English have not been “A Bit Cross” since the blitz in 1940 when tea supplies nearly ran out.
Terrorists have been re-categorized from “Tiresome” to “A Bloody Nuisance.” The last time the British issued a “Bloody Nuisance” warning level was in 1588, when threatened by the Spanish Armada.

The Scots have raised their threat level from “Pissed Off” to “Let’s get the Bastards.” They don’t have any other levels. This is the reason they have been used on the front line of the British army for the last 300 years.

The French government announced yesterday that it has raised its terror alert level from “Run” to “Hide.” The only two higher levels in France are “Collaborate” and “Surrender.” The rise was precipitated by a recent fire that destroyed France ‘s white flag factory, effectively paralyzing the country’s military capability.

Italy has increased the alert level from “Shout Loudly and Excitedly” to “Elaborate Military Posturing.” Two more levels remain: “Ineffective Combat Operations” and “Change Sides.”

The Germans have increased their alert state from “Disdainful Arrogance” to “Dress in Uniform and Sing Marching Songs.” They also have two higher levels: “Invade a Neighbour” and “Lose.”

Belgians, on the other hand, are all on holiday as usual; the only threat they are worried about is NATO pulling out of Brussels .

The Spanish are all excited to see their new submarines ready to deploy. These beautifully designed subs have glass bottoms so the new Spanish navy can get a really good look at the old Spanish navy.

Australia, meanwhile, has raised its security level from “No worries” to “She’ll be alright, Mate.” Two more escalation levels remain: “Crikey! I think we’ll need to cancel the barbie this weekend!” and “The barbie is cancelled.” So far no situation has ever warranted use of the last final escalation level.

A final thought -“ Greece is collapsing, the Iranians are getting aggressive, and Rome is in disarray. Welcome back to 430 BC”.

JackM on December 20, 2012 at 8:57 AM

Great points, Jack and Liam. If I may add to it, let’s not forget that Islam was – and remains – the world’s slave-traders, just as they have been for centuries. Muslims have been buying African (and other races’) slaves for centuries.

North American slavery covered at most two hundred years – the first slave laws based on color appeared in the 1660s, if memory serves and the Civil War ended slavery for all intents and purposes in 1865. Britain outlawed the Atlantic slave trade in 1807 and the US followed suit soon after. Yet Muslim slavery began in the mid-sixth century when they began their wars of destruction and has continued to this day. Slavery in Saudi Arabia, for example, was not officially outlawed until 1965 and it still exists, though for PR reasons they try to keep it quiet. Ask Filipinos who have gone there to work. and there have been a few cases here as well of Muslims having illegal slaves. There was a big court case a few years back regarding that very issue. And yet interestingly, while the descendants of North American slaves are easy to find, there appear to be no descendants of the millions of slaves brought into Muslim areas of control. Think about that for a moment or two. I’d say that as a nation, our record of slavery is far less deplorable than many others. In fact, of all the European-settled nations, the UK and the US did the most to stamp out world slavery. no other European, Asian or African nation lifted a finger.
