NYT op-ed: Tim Scott’s just a token for the GOP

posted at 9:21 pm on December 19, 2012 by Allahpundit

Jim Treacher’s right. Publishing this bilge is really just the Times’s way of calling him a cornball brother.

Of the offense of Disagreeing With The Left While Black, Tim Scott stands guilty as charged:

But this “first black” rhetoric tends to interpret African-American political successes — including that of President Obama — as part of a morality play that dramatizes “how far we have come.” It obscures the fact that modern black Republicans have been more tokens than signs of progress…

Even if the Republicans managed to distance themselves from the thinly veiled racism of the Tea Party adherents who have moved the party rightward, they wouldn’t do much better among black voters than they do now. I suspect that appointments like Mr. Scott’s are directed less at blacks — whom they know they aren’t going to win in any significant numbers — than at whites who are inclined to vote Republican but don’t want to have to think of themselves, or be thought of by others, as racist…

For Mr. Scott, the true test will come in 2014, when he will presumably run for a full six-year term. As Mr. Obama has shown, the question is not whether whites are willing to vote for a black candidate, but whether black candidates can put together winning coalitions (no matter their racial makeup) and around what policies. I suspect black South Carolinians will not be drawn to Mr. Scott.

The acid test of whether a staunch conservative like Scott is a token is whether black voters, who are overwhelmingly liberal, will vote for him? I thought, per the excerpt above, the point of his alleged tokenism was to attract more centrist but Republican-leaning voters to the party, not black Democrats. In that case, even if he wins with 60 percent of the vote in 2014, he’ll still be a token, right? He’ll have won conservatives and centrists, just as the supposed token strategy imagines. Smoking-gun proof.

None of you needs me to explain the point of this. You’ve seen it before, most vividly with Clarence Thomas and more recently with Allen West. The left needs a near-monopoly on the black vote to win elections (at least until there’s a bigger pool of Latino voters) and questioning the integrity and racial authenticity of minority conservatives is one way to shore up that monopoly. That an attack this nasty can slip easily onto the op-ed page of the country’s most esteemed newspaper (whose editorial board is itself nearly lily white) tells you all you need to know about how mainstream the tactic is among liberals. As an antidote, let me recommend two pieces on the wires yesterday. One is Josh Kraushaar’s look in National Journal at how the tea party has been an engine of racial diversity in the GOP. Which is not surprising: Tea partiers are desperate for leaders who won’t bend their principles under political pressure and minority conservatives have special practice in that area from having had to endure endless amounts of “Uncle Tom” sleaze from the left. It takes character and profound commitment to their beliefs for Clarence Thomas and Tim Scott to stick with conservatism when they’re being accused of tokenism for doing so. Who wouldn’t want to vote for someone like that? The second piece is lefty Jonathan Capehart’s take on Scott at WaPo yesterday. He’s no fan of Herman Cain or Allen West, whom he dismisses as rhetorical bombthrowers, but he does respect Scott as a serious legislator despite his ideological disagreements with him. So does James Clyburn, apparently, who told Capehart that Scott is a “good guy” and “serious” about policy. Exit quotation: “That’s good for South Carolina, good for the Republican Party and good for the nation.” Somebody let the Times know.

Wow. I never thought I’d see the day when conservative man of color was “Black Borked”, a new low even for the NYT who really does subscribe to the liberal mantra “All the News Fit to Tint”.

Really what should happen is to have a discussion with the left not about the Second amendment, but rather why they hide their racism right out in plain sight, all the while marginalizing people’s rights with their racist tone.

Frankly, I think this sort of speech should be outlawed, not unlike yelling “Fire”! in a crowded movie theater when there is none. A very stiff fine and jail sentence should be imposed for such inhumanity. Perhaps, even a death sentence should be invoked.

Maybe this is the only way the left will begin to have a civil discourse. Make them do it BY LAW.

SEIU Attack Black Tea Party Patriot & Tampa Town DNC Slaps Man

Uploaded on Aug 8, 2009

Now Obama is sending the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) to beat up Tea Party People. So last night in St Louis they beat up a black man who was handing out buttons and flags as a protest against the runaway out of control federal government.

President Obama has said that the “tea party patriots” who have questioned his plan for the takeover of health care by the government are using “mob tactics.” Here is a quick video of Moveon.org, SEIU, and DNC using “mob tactics.” We are just a group of grassroots activists that want our elected representatives to have full and open debate on health care reform. In this video patriots our verbally and physically attacked by DNC mob members. At the Tampa Town Hall, a guy was “slapped” by a local Democrat treasurer. Other people were pushed out of the room, just for questioning the health care bill.

Ethnic minority Americans and women and incapable of thinking for themselves or getting by for themselves without extraordinary help of the Government so these people pretending to be Republicans are simply some sort of “sellout” to Republicans, right? All ethnic minorities require handouts and must live in ghettos provided to them by slum lords getting rich on rent subsidies. Ethnic minorities are not capable of getting “real” jobs and so we must “help” them with special programs forever. Oh, and they aren’t capable of meeting the usual standards in education either so we need to make special allowances there, too. We need to celebrate the inferiority of women and minorities and make sure they get the help they need by continuing to vote Democrat. Vote Democrat because you know you really aren’t ever going to amount to anything without us.

Why don’t democrats have any black senators? Why are they so racist?

The Notorious G.O.P on December 19, 2012 at 10:15 PM

I suspect that appointments like Mr. Scott’s are directed less at blacks — whom they know they aren’t going to win in any significant numbers — than at whites who are inclined to vote Republican but don’t want to have to think of themselves, or be thought of by others, as racist.

The point is that he was NOT appointed because of the colour of his skin. He was appointed because of the content of his character and the seriousness of his endeavours. Scott will vote no differently than Trey Gordy would have had he been selected to become the Senator or had Strom Thurmond’s son had won. He doesn’t vote his skin colour. He votes his principles. THAT’S.THE.POINT.

Further, the fact that he was elected in the majority white 1st Congressional District, which was held for decades by racist, segregationist Democrats, belies the blood libel that you and your race-pimping coterie of bigots continue to spread about the Tea Party.

As Mr. Obama has shown, the question is not whether whites are willing to vote for a black candidate, but whether black candidates can put together winning coalitions (no matter their racial makeup) and around what policies. I suspect black South Carolinians will not be drawn to Mr. Scott.

He doesn’t need to put together a “coalition” like other “black candidates.” Unlike Mr Obama, he will not be running as a black man. He will be running as an American and a South Carolinian, which is exactly what he is.

His skin colour is and will continue to be IRRELEVANT. I know! It’s a novel concept for you, Mr Reed!

PS: If you ever want to get to that “post-racial” My Progressive Little Ponyland, you’re going to need to move on past the “real bruthas vote Democrats and cornballs vote Republican” plantation groupthink.

So the Tea Party has moved the GOP rightward because of it’s thinly veiled racism? Because “rightward” and “racism” are synonymous? And before the Tea Party came along the GOP wasn’t so racist? According to the likes of the NY Times?

This is just like the claim that Ronald Reagan couldn’t have won the GOP primaries today, because the GOP is so much farther to the right than it was 30 years ago. Except that 30 years ago Reagan was portrayed as a racist cowboy who appealed to the worst impulses of the American people.

Yep, it’s all about a personal grudge against him. And besides, in light of the Newtown massacre, you don’t have any humanity if you don’t support my tax and budget hikes.

The guy is sick.

Why is the half black half white Obama described as black to begin with?

I am not a racist but if I had become one I would blame Obama for pushing me in that direction with his nasty, strategic, purposeful, and unethical rhetoric and behavior.

Obama is mixed race, a more and more common occurance. Generally people of mixed races embrace both their heritages. But for Barry, being black and, therefore, a beneficiary of affirmative action was convenient. When you are slow-witted and lazy you need the lower standards.

But what I am more bothered by is that this is the first time in modern times that we have a President that was not raised as an American. That, IMO, is a bigger issue than the fact that he was the product of a white slut and and Kenyan socialist.

Last GOP Mayor of Chicago was in the 1930s. Detroit 1957. New Orleans 1890 etc etc. Moral of the story? Deliver decade after decade of poverty, corruption , high crime and poor schools and African Americans will vote for you 95%

I bet all the people dissing Tim Scott have never heard him speak on the issues. He has my respect.

Fleuries on December 20, 2012 at 7:57 AM

So let me get this straight…NYT basically says Blacks aren’t real blacks unless they proscribe to leftist/progressive/communist ideology of the democRAT party. Well, given that 97% of blacks voted for Obama and about 90% are demoCRAPS I think they’re probably right.

Doomsday on December 20, 2012 at 8:30 AM

Honestly this stuff turns my stomach, but it also should help people understand why it is soo very difficult for Black people to escape the Democratic Party. It is the idol before which one must genuflect to be accepted even within one’s own family at times. It can be intensely painful so most people just don’t bother to even question the standard line just to avoid this kind of treatment.

If you want to be legitimate, you have to be on the plantation, if you’re not on the plantation, you’re not legitimate.

The NYT continues to demonstrate that IT is completely RACIST…and IGNORANT. Another headline I read stated ‘BLACK Rep Scott….’ – why the focus on the fact that the man is BLACK? Aren’t we all supposed to be working towards an America where color doesn’t matter? Rather than focus on WHO the man is & what he stands for the Liberal media could not help themselves from printing a headline that focused on his color!

When Barak Obama was named Democratic party selection for President Joe Biden said it was good that a CLEAN, ARTICULATE BLACK man had been slected, as if this combination was some how extremely RARE across the country! It was an elitist prejudicial response from a WHITE Democratic Party Elitist. Liberals accuse the GOP of being elitist that USE blacks, but the truth is plain as the nose on your face.

Nancy Pelosi’s HORRIBLE leadership caused the Democrats to lose the house, & instead of allowing her to shuffle back in line with the rest of the Democrats in the House, she & her elitist WHITES running the party demanded that a BLACK Democrats from SC GIVE UP his earned position of leadership to HER so she could still remain in a position of relevant power. The SC Rep did nothing wrong to earn a demotion, but it was the elitist white leaders’ desire that this ignorant white woman stay in the top position of power in the House despite her failed leadership. To appease the Black SC politician they CREATED a NEW MADE-UP position.

The Democrats were the founders of the KKK, a group who at one time fought Civil Rights & lynched both blacks & whites who supported it. Once Civil Rights were passed, President Johnson recognized the importance of securing the new black voting populace’s loyalty. He said we (Democrats) must give them something to appease them…but nothing that will truly makle a difference. Since that time Democrats have sought to simultaneously appease blacks while enslaving them through dependence on Government programs like Meddicare, Medicaid, Welfare, Unemployment, free cell phones, etc. In the lest 50 years has the status of blacks in America, who have remained loyal to the Democrats for the most part, improved? During this last term under obama the national average for unemployment was over 8% – the unemployment rate for BLACKS was 14% (FOURTEEN PERCENT, & Obama did not institute 1 single program designed to help blacks become more independent & successful! It has been the same thing decade after decade!

Now, with the help of the media, Democrats/Liberals are trying to convince Blacks that any Black that considers themselves to be a Conservative, whio is against nation-destroying record-setting deficit-spending / national debt, big government, & the continued oppressive/ehnslaving programs of ‘hand-OUTS rather than a hand-UP have to be UNCLE TOMS who are being used by the GOP! It is disgraceful & despicable. I choose to believe that Blacks are more intelligent than this, that they can look back at this history & see for themselves that, as Johnson said, to keep blacks loyal Democrats continue to give them STUFF…but not enough to truly make a difference…& articles like this written by the NYT equates to little moe than a more passive version of a ‘Massah’s Whip to keep them in line intelectually!

Then why not call out the NYT’s for this kind of trash? Where are Mr. Scott’s peers to defend him?

I am so sick of this crap.

JPeterman on December 19, 2012 at 9:29 PM

WE are his peers…

The dimwit affirmative action professor who wrote this is openly communist and a professor of racial and economic inequality. They actually have made a specialty out of victimhood. Wow. A commie race pimp. It’s time this blog and all other blogs stop avoiding attacking the messengers. This moron should be working at a McDonalds somewhere and does not need to be given any credibility that he has not earned. He is another affirmative action moron, just like the idiot at Harvard who threw the tantrum at the police who were trying to protect his property, just like the president of this country who has never been able to hold a real job. We have elevated dimwits to the highest places of power in our institutions and nation because of the guilt of spineless liberal white people. We allow pampered, millionaire black academics to tell us we are evil because of the color of our skin. Welcome to bizarro world.

peacenprosperity on December 20, 2012 at 11:22 AM

It’s time this blog and all other blogs stop start avoiding attacking the messengers.

That is what I meant. Time to start calling the kettle black.

peacenprosperity on December 20, 2012 at 11:24 AM

Sorry, I am angry. Screwed that all up. My original statement was correct.

peacenprosperity on December 20, 2012 at 11:25 AM

Scott better get ready, because he’s now the Left’s Public Enemy #1. Can’t have a black running off the plantation and then actually ascending to a position of prominence. Unacceptable.

Progressive Heretic on December 20, 2012 at 12:15 PM

“NYT op-ed: Tim Scott’s just a token for the GOP”

….just another pathetic Liberal attempt to keep the ‘slaves’ from wanderin’ off the ‘plantation’….

easyt65 on December 20, 2012 at 2:26 PM

How can you consider yourself an African American and not be offended by this your not one of us BS..

wasn’t this the fundamental reason for the civil rights movement?

If you don’t walk like us and talk like us you are a sub human token.

Reason has seen its better day.

jomondo44 on December 20, 2012 at 2:58 PM

Obviously Dr. King’s dream that people would be considered for advancement without regard for the color of their skin doesn’t resonate well with liberals.
