Video: Obama’s speech in Newtown

posted at 8:01 am on December 17, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

While the nation mourned the horrific murders at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Connecticut, Barack Obama arrived to deliver a message of political action.  What kind of action?  Despite some of the initial reactions to Obama’s speech at the prayer vigil last night, a read of the transcript shows that the speech was as vague on solutions as most of us have felt since the shootings on Friday.  Certainly, one could have some suspicions about the direction that Obama and his administration would like to travel for solutions, but other than promise to study the situation, Obama offered no easy proposals to solve the problems of brokenness, however one defines it:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M1gSsm5xlKQ

Here is the most relevant part of the speech:

We can’t tolerate this anymore. These tragedies must end. And to end them, we must change. We will be told that the causes of such violence are complex, and that is true. No single law — no set of laws can eliminate evil from the world, or prevent every senseless act of violence in our society.

But that can’t be an excuse for inaction. Surely, we can do better than this. If there is even one step we can take to save another child, or another parent, or another town, from the grief that has visited Tucson, and Aurora, and Oak Creek, and Newtown, and communities from Columbine to Blacksburg before that — then surely we have an obligation to try.

In the coming weeks, I will use whatever power this office holds to engage my fellow citizens — from law enforcement to mental health professionals to parents and educators — in an effort aimed at preventing more tragedies like this. Because what choice do we have? We can’t accept events like this as routine. Are we really prepared to say that we’re powerless in the face of such carnage, that the politics are too hard? Are we prepared to say that such violence visited on our children year after year after year is somehow the price of our freedom?

But Obama never went any further toward providing his own answers to those questions.  Instead, he returned to the tenor of the vigil service:

All the world’s religions — so many of them represented here today — start with a simple question: Why are we here? What gives our life meaning? What gives our acts purpose? We know our time on this Earth is fleeting. We know that we will each have our share of pleasure and pain; that even after we chase after some earthly goal, whether it’s wealth or power or fame, or just simple comfort, we will, in some fashion, fall short of what we had hoped. We know that no matter how good our intentions, we will all stumble sometimes, in some way. We will make mistakes, we will experience hardships. And even when we’re trying to do the right thing, we know that much of our time will be spent groping through the darkness, so often unable to discern God’s heavenly plans.

There’s only one thing we can be sure of, and that is the love that we have — for our children, for our families, for each other. The warmth of a small child’s embrace — that is true. The memories we have of them, the joy that they bring, the wonder we see through their eyes, that fierce and boundless love we feel for them, a love that takes us out of ourselves, and binds us to something larger — we know that’s what matters. We know we’re always doing right when we’re taking care of them, when we’re teaching them well, when we’re showing acts of kindness. We don’t go wrong when we do that.

In the face of such evil and horror, a little humility isn’t a bad quality to demonstrate.  We’ll see whether that sticks, but the speech itself — on its own terms — expresses the anger, frustration, and grief that all Americans still feel after Newtown: how can we fix this? And perhaps the greater frustration: Is it really in our power to fix it?

Update: I wrote that the shootings took place on Thursday, but they took place on Friday.  I’ve fixed it above.

Actually, you should be ashamed of yourself.

How dare you excuse these shooters! How dare you make them out to be victims of the gun lobby.

They CHOSE to pick up a gun and shoot someone.

The fact you despicable people know nothing about responsibility and accountability should automatically qualify you for NOTHING. No one should listen to anyone that can’t understand that simple equation.

You people can’t stand the fact there are still millions of Americans who refuse to be real victims to the horrors liberalism has wrought upon us.

When have you worried about the number of traffic fatalities each year. How many families are wiped out because of an ACCIDENT. A 4000 to 6000 pound car travelling at 25+ MPH has enough energy to kill you, and anyone standing with you, outright. Where is your conversation to ban or limit the types of automobiles available. How about a pedal-car? Now that would reduce traffic fatalities to near ZERO.

BTW, when was it that you railed against the murder of innocent children. You know, those late term abortions where the infant human is viable, but the mother decides that its better for the infant human doesn’t get to experience life because it would be a burden on her. More innocent infant children are killed each year by physicians and mothers than by gunshot.

It is worth finding a way to keep the sane from being unjustly institutionalized and yet protect the sane from those who lose grip with reality and simple common decency. And as so many on the Left try to cast conservatives as having mental problems in their conservative ideology, great care must be taken against the horrific abuse of such power as has been witness in tyrannical regimes for nearly a century. No public safety is gained by the course of punishing political ideology by casting it as a mental disorder… but that requires rational discussion and ending aspersions of blood libel, being against human rights, racism, and any other form of demonization of those with different political beliefs… which is an irrational fear of the other which requires rational discussion, not emotional stimulation.

Great idea! In fact we could do this for all sorts of people who we deem unacceptable in society.

But posting their names isn’t good enough, we need to know who and where they are at all times. I would suggest some sort of badge that these social misfits should wear, maybe in the shape of…oh I don’t know…a star or something. Force them to sew it to their clothing, a different color for different types.

Where do you come up with these great ideas?

I bet a Nexus Lexus search on how little we talk about gun control would be edifying, to even the harshest critic.

Cindy Munford on December 17, 2012 at 10:19 AM

Gun control deals with one’s ability to hit what they are aiming at. I think the word search on gun + ban + clips + ammo would be more accurate. And, even with that, the left won’t admit that they have anything but the highest respect for citizens’ Constitutional right to own guns.

You see, for the left, they like using labels to further their ideology. Gabby Giffords was shot by a gunman. Those 27 people in Newtown were shot by a gunman. Jonesboro, Virginia Tech, Columbine, Aurora, and Portland…. all involved gunmen. But the Fort Hood slaughter of 13 was “workplace violence” and we shouldn’t jump to conclusions.

http://dailycaller.com/2012/12/15/mark-levin-politicians-pushing-gun-control-agenda-immediately-are-a-disgrace-audio/

“Let me tell you who I don’t want to salute, and I have to address this,” Levin said. “It’s extremely distasteful, but I have to address it. We have Mike Bloomberg, the mayor of New York, [saying] ‘Obama must take immediate action against guns.’ The mayor of Boston — ‘Time for national policy on guns.’ We have national policies on guns. We have state policies on guns. We have local policies on guns.”

“What they really mean is take away guns,” Levin charged. “And by the way, not just hand guns, but rifles and every other type of weapon. This is the default position every single time something happens in this country with the left. This is the default position: Attack liberty, attack the individual. There may be 100 million firearms, rifles and so forth in this country or a 100 million gun owners in this country.”

“I’ve talked about this before — not a single gun was used on 9/11,” he added. “Not a single gun was used at the Oklahoma City bombing. If there is evil, we need to figure out how to deal with it as best we can. But we cannot eliminate it. … Empowering government more and more and more to punish free individuals, the overwhelming majority of whom are law-abiding, is not the answer. It’s never the answer.”

I grew up with guns in the house, and it never occurred to me to pick one up. People have changed, and I’m afraid we probably have three generations right now who would consider picking up a gun to harm others and themselves. The reasons are numerous ranging from drugs, isolation, bullying, media, non-coping skills, lack of sanctity of life, living in a virtual reality and digital world.

Right now, people need to have a way of protecting themselves and their families because innocent people are sitting ducks to these people.

GhoulAid on December 17, 2012 at 10:35 AM

On a serious note, we don’t know a thing about the mass murderer. There has been plenty of irresponsible reporting on Friday and over the weekend to include misidentifying the name of the killer. We simply do not know what kind of mental issues the killer had, if he was on/off meds, if he played violent video games 16 hours a day, or how he obtained the weapons he used.

These are the things that should be determined before rushing to “fix” the problem. For comparison, it was only after-the-fact that weaknesses were found in Tech’s mental health services. Some call waiting for the facts irrelevant but until it is determined what set this guy off, how can anything be “fixed?”

But, of course, the anti-gun crowd doesn’t really care other than to use this incident to further their pre-packaged agenda. The deaths of those precious children are merely collateral damage to them even as the families of all the victims mourn their loss.

The FBI and Florida State University showed that 2.5 million violent crimes are prevented each year due to private gun ownership. In only 1% of those cases, was the weapon fired. That’s once every 13 seconds. (Fall 1995, Journal of Criminal Law and Criminology)

i’m sorry, but i don’t own any guns. if i did however, own some guns and had kids in the house, i would instill into them that they are never to touch them under any circumstances and then i would properly keep them locked up and out of reach. at all times. i am not against guns, or for banning them. how many times have we all heard stories about kids plaing with guns that were owned by the parents in the house and then, oopsies, it goes off and kills the kid, or the kids friend, etc. am i missing something? are guns magical unicorns that you have to constantly coral back into the gun case/locker/freezer, etc.?????

GhoulAid on December 17, 2012 at 10:55 AM

You don’t want to make the guns mysterious to your kids. Tell your children they can see the guns any time they want – but they need to come get you first and you’ll get them out and they can look at and handle them all they want. Take them to the range. Clean them around the kids etc. Take the mystery out of it while educating them.

lostmotherland on December 17, 2012 at 10:57 AM

You were saying?

By ‘socially dangerous’ of course, you mean ‘necessary means of protection.’

Let’s look at the data.

The FBI and Florida State University showed that 2.5 million violent crimes are prevented each year due to private gun ownership. In only 1% of those cases, was the weapon fired. That’s once every 13 seconds. (Fall 1995, Journal of Criminal Law and Criminology)

Break down:
1,100 murders per day
550 rapes per day
5,200 other violent crimes per day

you probably think a strawman is a Scarecrow. Logic doesn’t lend itself to liberalism.

Slade73 on December 17, 2012 at 10:58 AM

Make owning guns socially unacceptable. Stigmatize and isolate gun owners. Post their names in public so the rest of us can avoid them and their dangerous habit.

lostmotherland on December 17, 2012 at 10:16 AM

I got a better idea. Why don’t you respectfully engage in a dialog on mental illness? Why don’t you help make the discussion of this complex problem more socially acceptable? Aren’t you libs supposed to be the voice for the helpless, hopeless, weak and disenfranchised? Instead of using every crisis as a means to restrict further the rights of the very large group of law abiding citizens why do you not engage in a discussion as to the real reasons these tragedies occur? The liberal elite have no qualms paying for armed protection but the average citizen who wants to protect his property is supposed to made a social outcast by your reasoning. Would you be willing to agree that effective gun control should include disarming policemen as has been done in Britain? Can we please disarm the people such as the secret service who are charged with protecting our political leaders? You probably would not be willing to do that for the same reason I would not be willing to do that. The so called restriction of guns by legislation does not eliminate gun violence.

Fine. Keep me and the rest of America out of your obnoxious and socially dangerous fanaticisms.

Fourteen.

And for a reference point – since 9/11, more Americans have been shot to death in Chicago than have been killed in Iraq.

But guns are illegal in Chicago.

Washington Nearsider on December 17, 2012 at 10:30 AM

Thanks for the information! But, of course, facts don’t matter. Waiting for the authorities to finish investigating doesn’t matter. The left has a pre-scripted agenda and they are only attaching themselves to the Newtown slayings as a convenient rallying point that might sway stupid people to their way of thinking about banning guns.

Nevermind that the guns used at Newtown were not “stolen” or purchased from some government gun walking program gone awry. The left would have you think that every single gun used in every single crime was purchased off the street from some criminal and to reduce gun-related crimes all we have to do is go out after private gun ownership.

Happy Nomad on December 17, 2012 at 11:15 AM

You’re exactly right. And that pre-scripted agenda is PRECISELY why so many Americans are actively voicing their support for the 2nd Amendment. Every time there is a horrible tragedy like this one, the left moves to ban guns. The bill Feinstein is going to introduce on 02Jan13 bans all guns with ‘detachable magazines,’ and I will not be surprised if it passes the Senate.

Why is it that the left always responds with cries of “we need to do something” but never says “we need to do something effective to counter this problem”?

That’s already the law (see: 18 USC Section 922(g) of the Gun Control Act) Unfortunately, many states are slow in turning the names over to the NCIS because of threats from the ACLU, mental health advocates, and threats of litigation from the plaintiffs bar for disclosing mental health information.

Washington Nearsider on December 17, 2012 at 11:19 AM

That would require defining the problem in a way the left is unwilling to define it. The Fort Hood slaying of 13 is still called “workplace violence” by this administration. Why isn’t the Newtown killings being called “workplace violence” as well?

You never heard the left lecturing about the need to ban guns after Fort Hood, only the need to keep an open mind why a Muslim in correspondence with known terrorists might have killed 13 innocent human beings. And let’s remember that Nidal Hasan legally bought the weapon used in those slayings.

Happy Nomad on December 17, 2012 at 11:32 AM

Say that same thing on any leftist blog/forum and you’ll be excoriated by the resident psychobabblers and informed that the mentally ill roaming our streets “have bravely embraced an alternative lifestyle; and they must be allowed their freedom in order that they may flourish”.

Once again, the fault lies with the touchy-feely leftists who are completely out of touch with reality.

Now…FOAD.

Solaratov on December 17, 2012 at 11:33 AM

From last night…

…With their very first cry, this most precious, vital part of ourselves, our child, is suddenly exposed to the world, to possible mishap or malice, and every parent knows there’s nothing we will not do to shield our children from harm. And yet we also know that with that child’s very first step and each step after that, they are separating from us, that we won’t — that we can’t always be there for them.

“is suddenly exposed” implies your “child” was a child prior to being born. I thought 0bama recognized life beginning at birth. This quote implies otherwise.

…In the coming weeks, I’ll use whatever power this office holds to engage my fellow citizens, from law enforcement, to mental health professionals, to parents and educators, in an effort aimed at preventing more tragedies like this, because what choice do we have? We can’t accept events like this as routine.

They’re coming for your guns. That’s what he was saying. As I heard him utter those words that’s all I heard. He’s so cocky, that he telegraphs his intention. Everyone will comply like blind little lemmings. Goodness, I think I even heard Chris Wallace talking about the need to increase gun control.

I want to grieve for those affected by the senseless murders in CT, but these leftists only make me think about the 2nd Amendment right now.

Spit!

freedomfirst on December 16, 2012 at 11:23 PM

He says something rather rational and bordering on conservative when he says “our most important job is to give them what they need to become self-reliant and capable and resilient, ready to face the world without fear. And we know we can’t do this by ourselves.”

But then the fluker says “you can’t do it by yourself, that this job of keeping our children safe and teaching them well is something we can only do together, with the help of friends and neighbors, “

then he can’t help but add on “the help of a community and the help of a nation.” Wow…we can’t raise our kids without the federal government. I call BS!
